PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Thank you for favor received W. J. B.

John Bove’s journey to a chef and restaurateur began with the in uence of his parents. Mary and John Bove were immigrants from Italy. John’s whole life was Italian and he thought everyone was Italian until he went to school. John’s rst introduction into the restaurant business was in 1948 when his parents opened Mary’s Luncheonette on River Street in Troy. John was twelve at the time and he along with the whole family would help out in the restaurant. John remembers that during his lunchtime he would go home to wash dishes with his Pop, Scerbo. In the fall of 1959, due to the failing health of his Mother, John was offered the restaurant by his parents, but passed on the opportunity knowing that his parents needed the money. The restaurant was sold. John went on to open his rst restaurant in June of 1960. He ran this restaurant, The Roma, until late 1982. In 1982 John began renovation on his home, which became his current restaurant The My Way Cafe in 1984. This has been his most rewarding restaurant. It is small enough to control but large enough to be ne dining with room for the gardens that he used to grow vegetables and herbs he used in his cooking during the summers at the restaurant. For the last twelve years John has worked in partnership with his wife Susan. For him these have been the most rewarding years of his career. John did not always intend to go into the restaurant business; he wanted to be an electrical engineer and began studying at Hudson Valley Community College. He also took some Business courses, which have helped him in running his restaurants. Until recently he never formally studied the culinary arts, but rather gained his knowledge through his family, books and personal experience. At the age of 69 though, John completed a Correspondence Course and earned a Masters Degree in the Culinary Arts. John has used all of these studies throughout his career. During his career John was active in the local chapter of the New York State Restaurant Association. He was on the Board of Directors and served one year as Vice President and two as President. During his tenure as President John ran the Capital Chef’s Charity Ball. Local Chef’s would cook at the event and they raised around $40,000 for local charities and scholarships to Schenectady Community College. Throughout his time of establishing and running these restaurants, John also raised three children, Michael, Brian and Jodi. All three graduated from college and have gone on to successful careers. John is very proud of his children and their accomplishments. Now at this stage of his life it is time to go shing, spend time with his kids and grandkids and do some traveling. He wants to thank his customers for 52 years of allowing him to be creative, the honor of cooking for them, and the times he joined them in this lifelong banquet. He would like them to know that June 26th will be the nale of his career. On July 10th, his 52nd Anniversary, there will be a Retirement Party from 4-8pm at the former My Way Cafe, which was also his home for 27 years. All family, friends and employees past and present are invited. CHEF BOVE THANKS YOU FOR 52 GREAT YEARS!CHEF BOVE THANKS YOU FOR 52 GREAT YEARS!

Solar Lighting Benefi cial in Many Ways As society continues to grow more environmentally conscious, more and more homeowners are looking for ways to do their part outside their home as well as inside it. One increasingly popular option for eco-conscious homeowners is solar light-ing. But the benefi ts of solar lighting go beyond the envi-ronmental.

* Financial. Solar lighting is quite possibly the most affordable option for out-door lighting. That’s be-cause once solar lighting is installed, there are no more costs to speak of. Employ-ing solar energy to power its bulbs, solar lighting doesn’t use any electricity, keeping energy bills low as a result.

* Aesthetic appeal. Tradi-tional outdoor lighting often requires outdoor outlets and power cords. However, solar lighting utilizes rechargeable batteries that are recharged by the sunlight hitting the solar panels, eliminating the need for unsightly external power outlets and power cords.

* Practical. Many homeown-ers admit routinely forget-ting to turn on their outdoor lights, reducing their invest-ment value as a result. How-ever, solar lighting doesn’t require the homeowner to remember a thing, as solar lighting is automatically operated, meaning the lights will come on once the sun goes down without so much as the fl ip of a switch.

* Safety. Solar lighting also adds to a home’s safety and security. Because solar lighting is auto-matic, it’s easier to see at night when arriving home because the lights will already be on should a homeowner get home after dark. What’s more, because solar lighting automatically comes

on, homeowners can feel safe knowing that the light-ing is on even when they’re on vacation or away for the weekend, reducing the risk of potential home break-ins.

Keep Mosquitoes From Ruining Your Barbecue Few things exude the spirit of summer more than a backyard barbecue. Casual attire is expected, and the a good time is had by all.

One thing that can ruin even the best barbecue, however, is the uninvited guest with a big ap-petite. And it’s not Uncle Frank. Mosquitoes might not ask for a third or fourth hamburger, but they do tend to feast whenever they get the chance. At best, mosquitoes are annoying and pesky. At worst, mosquitoes pose a serious health risk to adults and pets, as mosquitoes can carry viruses that result in illness.

But mosquitoes don’t have to ruin your outdoor plans this summer. Instead, taking a proactive approach before the summer season starts can help reduce the risk of mosquitoes dropping by your next barbecue. The following methods can make your yard less attractive to hungry mos-quitoes, ensuring Uncle Frank will be the only one fi lling up at the next barbecue.

* Destroy or dispose of tin cans, old tires, buckets and similar water-holding containers.

* Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers that are left outside and cover trash containers to keep out rainwater.

* Clean clogged roof gutters on an annual basis.

* Change water every week in birdbaths and wading pools.

* Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fi sh.

* Clean and chlorinate swimming pools that are not being used.

* Check for trapped water in plastic or canvas tarps and arrange them so they drain properly.

* Clean animal troughs weekly.

* Irrigate lawns and gardens carefully to prevent water from standing for several days. --------

Grounds to Go Garden A cup of coffee enjoyed in the garden can make for a relaxing morning. However, that java can also be a pick-me-up for your landscape.

Coffee and tea byproducts can be used in and around the gar-den to act as a slow-release fertilizer and a main component of compost.

Like leaves left to decompose in the garden, coffee grounds when dispersed thinly in the soil, can be an amendment and add nutrients back into the ground.

Consider these uses for grounds.

* Add to compost piles (fi lters and all) along with tea bags to make an all-natural, rich source of energy for plants.

* Dilute with water to make a fast-acting fertilizer.

* Use in soil for houseplants or in vegetable beds.

* Some people believe that coffee grounds can help repel pests, such as snails and slugs.

* If your garden needs more nitrogen, defi nitely turn to coffee. Nitrogen is essential for plant leaf development.

* Plants that thrive in acidic soil, such as pines, evergreens, blueberries, raspberries, roses, azaleas, gardenias, ferns, rho-dodendrons, lily-of-the-valley, and even marigolds, can benefi t from coffee grounds which slightly lower the pH of the soil.

* Feed the coffee grounds to garden worms. It seems they love to consume them. Worm excrement in the garden is benefi cial, as is the aeration provided by tunnelling worms.

Did You Know? Mosquitoes are among the most common uninvited guests at backyard barbecues and other outdoor gatherings. But warding off these hungry and intrusive insects can be done in a number of ways. One of the ways in which homeowners can minimize the likelihood of mosquito infestations is to ensure gutters are clean and clear of debris. Mosquitoes are attracted to decaying leaves, so ridding the gutters of such debris can reduce the risk of mosquito infestation. Another, though probably less popular, way to reduce the risk of mosquitoes wreaking havoc on a backyard barbecue is to ask guests to refrain from wearing perfumes, after-shave or other products that have strong aromas. Such items attract mosquitoes and can increase the risk of guests getting bitten. Wardrobe can also play a role in a person’s susceptibility to mosquito bites. Tight-fi tting clothing can be bitten through by hungry mosquitoes, while more loose fi tting clothing can be more effi cacious when it comes to protecting partygoers. Finally, maintain-ing any areas where water can gather is also an effective means to ward off mosquito attacks.

Simple Projects to Stay OrganizedStaying organized can be a tall task for many households. While some fi nd it easy to maintain an organized household, just as many, if not more, men and women fi nd it diffi cult to keep a home organized.

However, staying organized and avoiding losing oneself in one’s own mess doesn’t have to be all that diffi cult. The following household projects won’t take much time, but can pay big dividends with respect to household organization.

* Install shelves in the garage. Too often the garage becomes a place to simply toss items we might not use on a daily basis, with no regard for where they might go. Install shelves in the garage for tools, nails, paint cans, etc., and avoid letting the garage become one big and messy storage bin.

* Hang a key hook near the home’s main entrance. Nearly everyone has gone through a fevered hunt for their house and car keys, looking under every nook and cranny and often wasting pre-cious time to do so. Avoid such problems by hanging a key hook right inside the home’s main entryway. This project should only take a few minutes but save lots of grief.

* Purchase a DVD case. As home entertainment systems have grown in popularity, so have pri-vate DVD and video game collections. For families that no doubt boast a variety of tastes with respect to fi lms, a DVD storage case that holds all DVDs in one convenient place can help avoid individual DVDs spread out all over the house.

* Give Fido his own storage box. Today’s family pets are an important part of the family, and many boast toy collections that would rival that of most children. To avoid dog toys being left all about the house and yard, simply purchase a storage locker for all of Fido’s (or Felix’s) many toys.

* Purchase digital picture frames. Digital pictures can help clear some room throughout a house-hold. Because digital picture frames can change pictures regularly, those looking to create more space can clear space-hogging picture frames from coffee tables, end tables or shelves without forcing people to part with their favorite pictures. Rather than fi ve different picture frames, sim-ply load fi ve pictures into a digital frame to maximize the space available.

What Type of Tree Is That in the Yard?Though it might have been common knowledge back in grade school, there’s a good chance you might have forgotten what kind of tree that is outside your kitchen window. Even those with a green thumb might not remember the differences between types of trees. For those who need a cheat sheet, the following is a breakdown of the some of the more common types of trees you might have around your property.

* Dogwood. Dogwoods boast colorful autumn leaves, making them a favorite of those looking to trees to add aesthetic appeal to their property.

* Maple. Maple trees are very common throughout the milder regions of the northern hemi-sphere. Leaves are similar to those depicted on the Canadian fl ag, and these deciduous trees are most commonly grown as medium to large trees.

* Evergreen. Any plant, tree or shrub that maintains its leaves year-round. Leaf persistence can last from as short as one year to as long as 40 years, though the average is closer to fi ve years.

* Willow. Willows are most common in moist areas, along fl oodplains or riverbanks. Willows are rapid-growing and boast very simply fl owers that lack petals.

* Birch. Birch trees produce separate, abundant, tiny male and female fl owers in dense clusters. Birch trees are generally most common in arctic regions in the northern hemisphere.

* Ash. Ash are generally valued for their timber and recently began being a favorite choice of wood among baseball players for their bats. Characterized by small, greenish fl owers, ash trees in North America have been subject to disease for several years, rarely living beyond 10 years as result.

Carpet TilesHomeowners considering different fl ooring options may want to look to versatile carpet tiles. Carpet tiles provide the comfort of carpeting underfoot, but without the labor-intensive installa-tion process. What’s more, carpet tiles can be removed individually and replaced should a stain or damage occur -- something that’s impossible with regular carpeting. These tiles come in dif-ferent varieties, and may be square in shape or interlocking like a puzzle to hide seams. The cost of the tile depends completely on its thickness and density. You can also mix and match colors to create a unique fl ooring pattern in your home. Many of the popular carpeting and fl ooring brands offer their own carpet tiles. Visit your local home improvement retailer or carpet store to browse the tile options.

Learn the Right Way to Store Produce It’s widely known that fruits and vegetables should be a large part of a healthy diet. Produce can be delicious, but many people shy away from fresh produce because they don’t know how to store it properly. For anyone who has bitten into a mushy banana or found a slimy squash inside of the refrigerator, here is a primer on how to properly store produce. Proper storage also can save you money and prevent wasted food.* Peaches, plums and other pitted fruits generally can be stored right on a counter at room tem-perature. These fruits are usually picked before ripe, and they will continue to ripen once you bring them home. If fruits are very ripe, then place them in a perforated plastic bag and put them in the top part of the refrigerator.* Bananas are another fruit that is picked before optimal ripening, hence the green bunches you often fi nd at the store. Bananas should be stored at room temperature until they are ripened. Again, if very ripe, bananas can be put in the refrigerator to prevent spoilage. The skin will turn brown, but it won’t affect the fl esh of the fruit.* Apples should be stored at room temperature and away from other fruits and vegetables. They produce a gas that can ripen other produce very quickly.* Moisture is the enemy of most produce. You can store celery, carrots, lettuce, or cabbage in a crisper drawer in the refrigerator, but they should be kept dry and used quickly. Line the bot-tom of the drawer with an ab-sorbant paper towel and be sure not to keep produce in tightly sealed plastic bags. Eventually moisture will rot these items or at least cause them to become soggy.

* Root vegetables such as pota-toes, yams and onions do best at room temperature and away from the fl oor, or anywhere vermin may be present. A cool, dark place, such as a pantry cabinet, would be effective. Refrigeration may compromise the taste of many root vegeta-bles. Gases form and can turn starches into sugar.

Safely Turn a Yard Into a Play Area Yards can add a lot to a home. For gardeners, a sprawling outdoor space can act as a weekend getaway of sorts, allowing homeowners the chance to go outside in the spring and summer sun and escape all of life’s other distractions. For parents, a yard can be a great place to let kids play and enjoy themselves, all within viewing distance of Mom and Dad’s watchful eyes.

Though backyard playgrounds might not be as prevalent as they once were, that doesn’t mean they’re still not fun for kids. Of course, a backyard play area is only as fun as it is safe, so par-ents considering creating one for their kids should consider the following tips before beginning such a project.

* Be mindful of drainage. Building a play area in a spot on the lawn that doesn’t have proper drainage is asking for trouble. During winter, such areas are likely to have excessive ice, threat-ening kids’ balance and potentially leading to injury. Even in warmer months, poor drainage could result in puddles after spring or summer rains, attracting mosquitoes and other insects and making kids more susceptible to bug bites.

* If possible, build in a relatively shaded area. While it might not be possible to create the play area entirely in the shade, try to keep as much as possible out of the sun. This will protect kids from the sun, particularly during those hot summer afternoons when kids love being outdoors but UV rays are at their most harmful.

Though you’ll want kids to be protected from the sun, it’s important not to build in areas that are concealed by trees. This will impede parents’ ability to watch their kids as they play.

* Build away from patio or barbecue areas. Erect play areas away from patios or barbecue areas. In addition to concrete sidewalks that can hurt children, you won’t want kids playing anywhere near charcoal, starter fl uid or propane tanks.

* Install a padded surface or sand around swingsets and jungle gyms. Instead of building on grass or hard ground, when building the swing set or jungle gym be sure to install a padded surface underneath, or use sand. Both will help cushion kids in the almost inevitable circum-stance that they fall. Sand and padded surfaces will decrease the risk of head injury and broken bones. Recycled rubber pellets and even wood chips can provide more cushioning than the hard ground during a fall.

ELIMINATE CONCRETE DUST!ELIMINATE CONCRETE DUST!

Recycled Soda Bottles Stop Weeds and Save Money (MS) -- The popular conser-vation mantra Reduce, Re-Use, and Recycle fi nds root in your grandmother’s sage advice -- “Waste not. Want not.”

In the early 20th century, con-servation and waste minimi-zation were not social move-ments. They were necessities. Ten years into the 21st cen-tury, the wisdom and ben-efi t of conservation is back in the forefront of American thought.

The lagging economy has many people questioning how they can cut costs. A big hit to the home budget comes in maintaining a lush landscape. It is a great irony that keep-ing up green spaces can take a

heavy toll on wallets as well as the environment.

Expenditures in the war on weeds are often high in time and money. Nobody wants weeds poking up their ugly heads up in the yard. Something has to be done!

The battle often turns to an expensive and deadly assault with chemical weapons. The herbicides may knock out weeds, but they also punch the pocketbook and introduce damaging ele-ments to the environment.

There is a less expensive, more effi cient, eco-friendly method for maintaining landscapes. Use landscape fabric. It is the se-cret to low-maintenance, chemical-free shrub and fl ower beds.

Breathable fabrics like new Commercial WeedBlock(R) Recy-cled block sunlight and prevent seed germination. If the weeds can’t germinate, they can’t grow. Then gardeners don’t have to squander time pulling them or spend money on herbicides for spraying them.

Commercial WeedBlock(R) Recycled is a heavy-duty land-scape fabric made from 100% recycled 2-liter plastic soda bottles. The eco-friendly fabric can be found in garden supply and retail stores or by calling 1-800-EASY-INC. Visit www.easygardener.com for more information.

It takes 27 bottles to make one roll, so using this fabric reduces waste by keeping plastic out of overfl owing landfi lls.

A landscape fabric like Commercial WeedBlock Recycled also helps conserve water. The thin layer of pervious fabric slows surface evaporation and safeguards soil moisture.

Using landscape fabric is easy. Simply prepare the landscape bed, roll out fabric and spread over plants, cut an X shape in the fabric above plants, and pull the fabric down. Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch over the fabric, and it will provide weed protection for years to come.

Switching from chemical weed control to a landscape fabric made from recycled bottles may seem like a small change, but it makes a large impact in the long run.
