Tales, legends, romance and courage arecommon things to be associated with themassive Chittaurgarh Fort, which isoften touted as the symbol of Rajput pride.Consisting of majestic structures like theVijay Stamba and the Kirti Stambha andgorgeous temples, this fort has been inexistence since the 7th century.

Another interesting fact about the fort isthat it has also been named as the WaterFort, as it initially had about 84 waterbodies, which were sufficient to keep anarmy of 50,000 people in the for 4 yearswithout any concern for thirst. Consideringthe fact that this fort is located in the desertstate of Rajasthan, this is no smallachievement!

Legend has it that the ChittaurgarhFort was once home to a very beautifulqueen named Rani Padmini. Such was thebeauty of this lady that stories about hergrace and charm floated to places far and

wide. Hearing of all this, Ala Uddin Khiljiwanted to witness the lady and capture her.This led to a war between the Muslim forcesand Rana Ratan Singh's army, in whichmajor parts of the Chittaurgarh Fort weredestroyed and many lives were lost.

Before the seige of Ala Uddin Khilji, theChittaurgarh Fort was consideredimpregnable, but misfortune seemed tohave released its fury on the place after1303, as the place was first captured byBahadur Shah in 1535 and subsequently byAkbar in 1567.

2 Vijay Stambha

Built in the 15th Century by Rana Kumbha tocommemorate his victory over the armies ofMalwa and Gujarat, the Vijay Stambhaproudly relates the story of Rajasthan'scourage and valour, specially in thebattlefield. Built partially in red sandstoneand partially in white marble, the VijayStambha is decked with marvellous carvings

of Gods, Goddesses and floral patterns.

One of the iconic structures in the ruinedChittorgarh Fort, this structure has about150 narrow stairs which lead you to the topof the tower. Once you have reached thetop, you can enjoy sprawling views of theFort, which are practically unrivalled. With allits architectural splendour, the VijayStambha makes for a beautiful place to clicksome spell binding shots.

3 Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame )

TheKirti Stambha, also known asTower of Fame, is a beautiful tower that waserected in the 12th century by a wealthy JainMerchant, adorned with intricate carvings ofDigambars. This seven storied structure isdevoted to the first Jain Tirthankara,Adinatha. This tower is built in the SolankiStyle of architecture and consists of majorbalconies and windows that are intricatelylatticed.

On the second floor, one can see a beautifulstatue of Adinatha. If you are determinedand make your way to the top of this tower,you will be greeted by spellbinding views ofChittorgarh. The beautiful tower is a fineexample of architecture and leaves onemarvelling about how one could createsomething so beautiful, at the time of littletechnology! Definitely worth some space onyour camera's memory card.

4 Meera Temple

One of the most beautiful temples around,the Meera Temple in Chittorgarh is one thatactually revels in a divine aura. AsChittorgarh was the birthplace of Meera Bai,the most ardent devotee of Lord Krishna,Rana Kumbha had the Meera Temple builtto honour her devotion to the God. TheTemple consists of gorgeous idols which arecarved on its pillars, walls, outer limits andin the sanctum. On the walls of this temple

5 Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary

One of the lesser known Wildlife Sanctuariesaround the state, Bassi Wildlife Sanctuaryhas a mysterious charm that waits to beunravelled! Housing a large variety ofanimals like Fox, Hyena, Panther, Jackal,Crocodile, Cheetal, Porcupine, Wild Boar,Langur ad Hare, the place is also a tertiaryhome to many migratory birds like Cranesand Pelicans during winter months.

Fringed by the rugged Vindhyachal Ranges,the Bassi Wildlife sanctuary also has theOrasi and Bassi Dams included in its area,which make for a pleasing sight, even if it isslightly hard to spot the animals. All in all,

the place is a great option to spend yourday, away from the maddening touristcrowds in the lap of nature.
