Watching the Playoffs:

Igrew up in the Westchester area of Los Angeles.I recall in 1958 sitting on the back fence at ourhome and witnessing a motorcade on Airport
Boulevard following the arrival of the Dodgers for theirfirst year of playing in Los Angeles. Sitting in open con-vertibles were Dodger stars such as Duke Snider andJohnny Podres and manager Walter Alston. It was quitea memorable experience for me as a young boy.
This year, as I watched the baseball playoffs involvingthe Angels and Dodgers, I saw a type of baseball vastlydifferent from the kind of baseball I recall from the 1950’sand early 60’s. Those days saw pitchers like Koufax orDrysdale most often pitching to the eighth or ninth in-nings. Those days saw the birth of the late reliever withRon Peranowski (later a pitching coach) perfecting shortrelief. If the team was winning, you saw either a completegame or a game with 1-2 relievers at most.
Those were also the days of the well-rounded generalplayers. There were Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and theDuke. These players not only hit, but they could stealbases. And boy could they field! Duke Snider had such arenowned strong throwing arm that someone actuallychallenged him to attempt to throw the ball out of theColiseum from the playing field where the Dodgers thenplayed.
During this year’s playoffs, arguably the best player onthe Dodgers was removed in many games in late inningsfor a defensive player. Even the Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez, who some would argue is the best player in baseball today, was removed for a pinch runner. The day of the all-around baseball player appears over. There are hitterswho only come in to face right handed low-ball pitchers, while there are other hitters who are summoned to theplate to face high pitches either from the right or left. There are pinch runners for when there is one out andothers for when there are two. There are specialists of allsorts, but not the generalist great player seen in the past.
In one of this year’s playoff games, the winning teamhad nine pitchers! One pitcher came in to get a groundout and then was removed. Another pitcher came in forthe sole purpose of walking the one batter he faced. Eventhe strong arms in the playoffs, pitchers capable of throw-ing complete games, were often gone by the end of thefifth inning, even when they held the opposition to threeor less runs.
Perhaps one of the reasons for the use of Steroids inrecent years has been the pressure for certain players to
be as strong as possible in their particular areas of spe-cialization. The homer hitter exists for just that purpose. There is much pressure for that player to become asstrong as possible to be a threat to hit the ball out eachtime. Remember, Hank Aaron, the last non-steroid homerun champ, never hit 50 home runs in a single season. Hewas known when playing just as much for his singles anddoubles as his homers. But that was in the age of the“generalist.” We now live in the age of the “specialist.”This constant changing of pitchers and bench playerstoday makes for a slower and more boring game. I amnot the only one who longs for a new Willie Mays orMickey Mantle. The legends of these baseball greats loomeven larger in an age with no similar great generalists ofthe sport.
Many have seen baseball as a metaphor for life. Eachgreat novelist seems to feel compelled to write their GreatAmerican novel featuring baseball. Many of these novelsare put on the movie screen. “A Field of Dreams” is seenas a metaphor for relationship between father and soncentered around the baseball diamond. “The Natural”speaks to the indestructible talents inherent in some play-ers (i.e., people) in our society.
The rise of “specialists” in baseball and other sportsparallels a rise in reliance on experts and expertise in otherfields as well. The Orthopedic Surgeon now specializesin the hand, the back, the leg, or some other body part. There are pediatric neurologists who specialize only inseizures, while others specialize in other specific areas. Weused to have pediatricians, internists, ob-gyn’s, or othergeneralists that we went to. We now consult a specialistfor each type of pain we experience. The same is true indentistry where we might travel to three or four differentdental specialists to figure out the cause of a single con-dition.
Most every one of these specialists has learned to seethe problem of the patient almost exclusively from theirown narrow perspective. The psychologist or psychiatristtreating Attention Deficit Disorder will diagnose this con-dition almost 100% of the time, while the psychiatrist whotreats mental health disorders will often seen the samechild as having an Anxiety Disorder. The Autism special-ist will find this same child to have Autism. Just as in base-ball where only a bunt specialist seems to know thiscomponent of the game, each specialist looks at only asmall component of the person being treated.
Virtually every field today has had an increase in spe-cialists and a decrease in generalists. You have to go to a

separate tax expert for real estate transactions, a separateone for business, and yet a third for filing personal taxes. There are residential and business property real estateexperts. Within the residential field, there are home ex-perts, estate experts, condo experts, and income prop-erty experts, among others. Even cleaners specialize inshirts versus wedding dresses versus bedding.
When you ask high school students today what theywant to do for a career, they don’t just say “become adoctor or lawyer.” They often describe in detail a small, very specific field of specialization, such as becoming apediatric kidney specialist dealing with transplants.
Something has been lost. To be a good specialist, you first have to become a good generalist. The psy-chologist who deals with children with Autism, mustfirst become a good psychologist in general, before thenbecoming a good expert with children. Only then doesexpertise in a specific area of dealing with children comeinto play. The attorney who fights in the Supreme Courton behalf of white collar criminals accused of wide-spread fraud must first become a good attorney and lit-igator before embarking on such as specialized practice.
The trend toward specialization and away from gen-eralization is neither good for baseball or for society. Itis hard work to develop competency across numerousareas of a given discipline or field. Few seem willingtoday to become the well-rounded attorney or physician.Even house cleaning specialists have emerged with dif-ferent expertise. You get a different person to clean yourgranite counters than to clean your floors, and yet a thirdperson who specializes in cleaning your windows.
We need to see people put the effort into learning
the broad base of skills of the larger profession beforemastering a single area of expertise.
With a return to the generalist, we may see again theemergence of a Sandy Koufax or a Warren Spahn. Atone time in the 1950’s we saw Ted Williams, Stan Musial,Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Duke Snider, RobertoClemente, Ernie Banks, and Hank Aaron, among others, all playing at the same time. Today, we see only one ortwo players that can be mentioned in the same breath asthese Hall of Famers. Similarly, we had pioneers in med-icine in the areas of comprehensive cancer treatment ororthopedics, while we now have only the individual“body parts” specialists.
We need to teach our children that the kind of spe-cializations seen today in baseball resulting in the nearcontinuous substitutions of players and the prolongingof the games which results has harmed the game.
Similarly, we have to teach our children to think morebroadly and to prepare themselves for the larger fieldrather than the narrow scope of expertise. Having gen-eral knowledge and skills must be seen as a prerequisiteof a later choice to specialize. A good brain surgeonmust first be a good surgeon, and even before that, mustbe a good physician. The combined generalist/specialistmay require longer training and a different model forpractice. But this reliance on so many specialists whoonly see conditions within a narrow scope of referencewithout regard to the larger picture has to go!
Maybe next year, the baseball playoff games will useonly 2 or 3 pitchers for each side and only 4-5 on thebench, and end before midnight. Then again, maybe be-fore next year, the Messiah will come (G-d willing).

Something which is holy is also protected and, to acertain extent, hidden. The Holy of Holies, the in-nermost chamber of the Temple, was the most sa-
cred place in the world. One way its holiness is expressedis through the fact that nobody could ever go there -- ex-cept the High Priest on Yom Kippur.
Similarly, and more familiar to us, the Torah scroll is holy.Usually, it is kept behind a curtain in the Ark. When theTorah scroll is taken out of the Ark this is felt to be a spe-cial occasion, and everyone in the synagogue stands up. Itis still within a mantle, and only when it is brought to thebimah is the mantle removed. If the Torah scroll is carriedto another location it is usually wrapped in a tallit, as anextra covering expressing its sanctity.
Our parshah, Vayeira, tells us something about woman-hood: that womanhood is sacred, and has great spiritualpower. And it also tells us that feminine modesty is a pro-found aspect of human life, making a woman beloved toher husband.
The parshah begins by telling us about three angels whovisit Abraham. They are disguised as travelers. They askAbraham: "Where is Sarah your wife?" He answers: "She is inthe tent."
Rashi, the great Bible commentator, discloses a level ofmeaning within these words which might not be immedi-ately apparent. As we learn elsewhere in the Torah, Sarahis a very beautiful woman. By affirming that she is in thetent, rather than standing in all her beauty before the threevisiting men, there is a subtle hint to the idea that Sarah ismodest. Why should the angels wish to hint at Sarah's mod-esty? Rashi says "in order to make her beloved to her husband."
Modesty expresses inner beauty and hints at the deepspirituality and holiness which is the inner nature of wom-anhood. In certain ways the woman represents the Shechi-nah, the Divine Presence in the world. The quality of thefeminine is the point where the physical and the sacred join.
The angels have come to tell Abraham and Sarah thatSarah will bear a child. Perhaps the hint to her modesty, thus making her yet more beloved to her husband, is partof their mission.
Modesty is an ideal which is central in Jewish life. It af-fects not only clothes, but also speech and behavior. As de-fined by Jewish law, modesty concerns men as well aswomen. But in popular consciousness, it is specially rele-vant to the woman. Modesty expresses the inner beauty andalso spiritual power of womanhood.
The ideal of modesty does not mean at all that thewoman is hidden from society. According to the Sages,Sarah provides a key example of a woman who taught oth-ers and gave spiritual inspiration to the women of her time.Modesty is a fine value, but it is not taken to the extremesapparent in some societies.
Later on the parshah speaks of the spiritual insight ofSarah, which was in fact greater than that of Abraham.G-d says to Abraham: "Listen to the voice of Sarah, and do every-thing that she tells you." Rashi comments that this means: "Lis-ten to the voice of the Divine Spirit within her. This teachesus that Abraham was second to Sarah in power ofprophecy."
The Torah thus highlights several qualities of our great-great-grandmother Sarah: modesty, inner beauty, power toinspire others, and holiness. These are qualities which shehas bequeathed to her daughters through the generations. Dr. Tali Loewenthal is Lecturer in Jewish Spirituality at University CollegeLondon, director of the Chabad Research Unit, and author of Communi-
cating the Infinite: The Emergence of the Habad School.

In what must be one of the greatest transitionalscenes in the entire Biblical narrative, this week theTorah transposes us from the gracious home of
Avraham in one scene and to the evil city of S'dom in thenext. Avraham's home was one of kindness. It was a homewhere the master of the house would run to greet nomadicwanderers, and invite them into his abode only three daysafter a bris milah! It was a home in which Sarah had openeda door in every direction, ensuring that there was an unre-stricted invitation to any wayfarer, no matter which direc-tion he or she came from.
The scene switches to S'dom, a city in which kindnessand charity were unheard of. A city in which a damsel whocommitted the terrible crime of feeding a pauper, wassmeared with honey and set out for the bees. Sdom was acity where visitors who had the audacity to ask forovernight lodging were treated to a special type of hospi-tality. They were placed in beds, and then, if they were tooshort for the beds, their limbs were tortuously stretched tofit the bed; if they were larger than the beds their limbswere chopped off.
How does the Torah make the transition from the worldof kindness and charity to the world of evil? The Parshatells us the story of three angels who visited Avraham. Each had a mission. Rashi tells us, "one to announce to Sarahthe birth of a son, one to overthrow Sodom, and one to cure Abra-ham." You see, three were needed as one angel does notcarry out two commissions. "Raphael," explains Rashi, "whohealed Abraham went on to rescue Lot, as healing and saving maybe one mission." And so the scene moves from Avraham inEilonai Mamrei to Lot in S'dom, where the angels posingagain as wayfarers were graciously invited. They saved thehospitable Lot and destroyed the rest of the city.
I have a simple question. Why did the angel who was sentto destroy S'dom make a stop at Avraham's home? Two an-gels could have gone to Avraham's home, one to heal Avra-ham and the other to inform Sora of the good news. Thethird could have gone directly to S'dom and waited therefor the others to catch up. Why make a detour to Avraham?
Traditionally, young children who start learning Talmud, are introduced to Tractate Bava Metzia in general and thechapter Eilu M'tziyos in particular. The tractate deals withproperty law and emphasizes respect for other people'spossessions. Eilu M'tziyos stresses the laws of returninglost items and the responsibilities of a finder of those ob-jects. Some wanted the boys to learn about the blessings, but Rav Moshe Feinstein insisted that the custom not bechanged. He wanted to imbue the youngsters of the enor-mous responsibilities that they have to their fellow man.One cannot be a Jew only in shul where he can sway, pray,
and recite blessings, but one must also be also be a Jew inthe outside world, where the tests of honesty arise eachday.
I heard the story of one of those youngsters, who foundhis way off the beaten yeshiva path. His college-yearssearch for spirituality found him studying with a yogi inBombay, India who railed against Western comforts andderided the culture of materialism. He preached peace, love, and harmony while decrying selfishness and greed. The young man was enamored with his master's vociferousobjections to Western society, until he was together withhim on a Bombay street. A wallet lay on the ground. Therewas cash and credit cards sticking out from it. It was clearlyowned by an American tourist. The Yogi picked it up andput it in his sarong. "But it may belong to someone,"protested his young charge. "It is a gift from the gods," heanswered, "heaven meant it for us . . . ." The young man'sprotests fell on deaf ears.
At that moment, the words of his Rabbi back in fifthgrade rang in his ears. "These are the items that must beannounced for return; any item with an identifying sign . .”
He was stirred by truth of his traditions, and the purityof his past. He left the Yogi and the wallet, and eventuallyreturned to a Torah life.
It is easy to rail against others. It is easy to talk aboutloose morals and unethical behavior. It's even easy to de-stroy Sdom. But Hashem did not let the angels do just that.He told them all to them first visit Avraham. He wantedthem to see what kindness really means. See an old manrun to greet total strangers. See a 90-year-old woman kneaddough to bake you fresh bread. Meet the man who willplead for mercy on behalf of S'dom. And then, and onlythen can you mete the punishment that they truly deserve.Because without studying the good, we cannot under-stand the true flaws of the bad. Withoutwatching Abraham committrue kindness, weshould not watch theinhabitants of Sdomget their due. •

Beyond Words: When Things Don't Make Sense
By Sara Esther CrispeSara Esther Crispe, a writer, inspirationalspeaker and mother of four, is the editor
of TheJewishWoman.org
The other day I watched the most unbelievable video. Itwas footage from a train platform in Australia. A youngmother was fussing with her baby, protecting him from thestrong wind. Then, in a split second, as she let go of thestroller to fix her belt, a gust of wind pushes the strollertowards the tracks. The mother and other bystanders rushto catch the moving stroller but can't. It topples over theplatform, into the tracks, the very moment a train is pass-ing by. You watch the mother reach over, her arm gettinghit by the train, miraculously not falling in herself. Thenyou see everyone on the platform, their hands coveringtheir mouths, horrified that this young baby was just killedbefore their eyes.
But he wasn't.
Somehow, unbelievably so, this baby survived. With theexception of a scratch on his forehead.
I watched this video over and over again. I couldn't be-lieve the blatant miracle. It gave me such hope and encour-agement. How could someone watch this video and doubtwhether we have a Creator that runs this world?
Today I again saw the hand of the Creator, as He directsthe world in His unfathomable way. But this time with theopposite result.
The worst kind.
The kind that we react to by pronouncing, Baruch dayanha'emet, "Blessed is the true Judge."
This morning I found out that a little three-year-old girlwas killed in Jerusalem as she got off her school van. Thisgirl was the daughter of a friend I had when I lived there. This woman already knew tragedy, having lost her ownmother as a young girl. Her baby girl was named after herbeloved mother.
I am writing this as I try to process this loss. As I try tounderstand how and why these things happen. They donot make sense. But who says they are supposed to?
When I watched the video of the miracle baby, I remem-ber saying to my husband that this kid better grow up tobe something unbelievably special. After all, with your lifesaved like that, you better make something of it. I evenshowed it to my children so they could watch a true miraclebefore their eyes.
Now I sit with tears streaming down my face and thinkabout my friend. I think about the loss of her baby girl, her only daughter. I look at the picture of the medicsworking on her with the slightest view of a pink backpack
in the corner. And I wonder why I thought that a messyroom was really so terrible that it was worth screaming atmy kids over. Now I sit here waiting for them to get homefrom school so that I can tell them how much I love them.
And I just pray that in those few hours between now andwhen they come home, that I don't forget how I feel rightnow.
I don't think in terms of if they come home, but whenthey come home. And I get it. We have to think like thatto make it through the day. But even with that naïve cer-tainty of when they come home, how will I respond? Theywill have homework to do, dinner to eat, baths to take. Andsomewhere along the way I will most likely get annoyed, overwhelmed and very possibly lose my cool. The spilledsoup will seem like the greatest of tragedies along with themisplaced homework which has actually caused me in thepast to scream aloud, "Why me???"
Perspective.
I am not saying anything new. Every tragedy that comesclose to our lives shakes us up. It is that wake-up call toappreciate what we have.
But it is not enough when it is temporary.
Why do I wonder what will come of this miracle babyand not focus on what will be of my life?
Why do I make plans for the future without really con-templating that every moment I breathe is a true miracle? Why do I not live consciously with the true recognitionthat I have no certainty or security of what will be?
All I have is right now. All I can truly know is right now.But do I live right now?
I am usually too busy regretting the past or worryingabout the future. The fact that I have a present is truly apresent. And I better make sure I use it well.
The mother of the miracle baby will no doubt live herlife with a constant awareness of what could have beenand gratefulness for the blessing she was given. My friendwill unfortunately mourn the loss of her baby girl for therest of her life, an awareness that will always be present. And me? I hope to work on myself so that every minutecan count, for we only count our minutes when we realizethey are limited. And I pray that the Judge of all judgestakes us out of this darkness and brings us true clarity withthe ultimate gift of Moshiach.•

PARSHAS CHAYEI SARAH
by Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky
Avraham sent his servant Eliezer onquite a difficult mission. Find a shid-duch for not only the world’s most eli-
gible bachelor, but for its most spiritual. Yitzchak wasdesignated by Hashem to be offered as a sacrifice. Henever left the land that would one day become Israel. Andhe was raised by the founders of Judaism, Avraham andSarah.
It isn’t easy to find a match for such a special individual.Avraham made Eliezer promise that he would not bringback a Cannanite woman for his son. Instead, Eliezer wasto search among Avraham’s family in Charan and find asuitable maiden for the sacrosanct young man.
Laden with gifts, Eliezer left for Charan. As a selectioncriteria he devised a sure-fire approach. "Avraham," hethought, "is the epitome of kindness and hospitality.Surely Avraham would want those qualities prevalent inhis daughter-in-law." He prayed to Hashem to guide him."When I arrive in Charan, I will ask a maiden for water. The maiden," he thought, "who replies by saying, ‘drink, and I shall even give your camels to drink, [and drawing waterfor camels who had just completed a long desert journeyis no simple task]’ must be the one who is designated forYitzchak." (Genesis 24:13-14)
The exact scenario that had been prayed for actually oc-curred. As Eliezer stood by the well in Charan, Rivkawalked toward it. The posuk tells us that as soon as Eliezerwatched Rivka begin to draw water, he raced toward herand asked her the pre-determined questions. The graciousresponse led to our destiny.
The Medrash questions why Eliezer raced forward togreet Rivka. It answers that as Rivka went to draw water,Eliezer saw a miraculous event. As she lowered her bucket, the waters in the well rose to greet her. Therefore Eliezerran to greet this maiden, as this was a spiritual individualwho must truly be Yitzchak’s bashert.
Yet, if such a miraculous event occurred, why didEliezer continue with his pre-planned act? Why did he askRivka for water and wait until she responded by offeringdrinks to both him and his entourage? Also, when Eliezerdiscusses the entire scenario with Rivka’s family and tellsthem why he decided upon Rivka, he repeats the story ofRivka’s grace and hospitality. Yet Eliezer fails to mention
of the miraculous incident of the rising waters.
In the Slobodka Yeshiva, nothing was as important asthe study of Torah. Students who excelled in their dili-gence and ability were viewed in awe. But the greatest rev-erence was saved for the founder of the Yeshiva, RabbiNosson Zvi Finkel, the Alter of Slobodka (1849-1927).With his brilliance, humility and great character, he set thetone of the entire Yeshiva.
One day two students were discussing a new young man,Isaac Sher, who had just entered the Yeshiva. "Isaac is atrue ilui," said one. "He knows the entire Shas andShulchan Aruch, by heart."
After the other boy listened as the first extolled the in-tellectual virtues of Isaac Sher he added meekly, "I had aconversation with him the other day. He is truly ageshmahkeh mentch."
"Geshmahkeh mentch?" questioned the first student ina scoffing tone. "Is that all you can say about him? We aretalking about the greatest mind ever to step foot in this
Yeshiva and all you can say that he is a decent and kindfellow? I see you don’t appreciate a person’s true value."
With that the disgusted student began to walk away, butthe towering presence of the Alter of Slobodka blockedhis path.
"No," he said firmly as he motioned to the humiliatedstudent. "That young man is correct. Reb Isaac’s greatestquality is that he is a geshmahkeh mentch."
The Alter eventually took Reb Isaac Sher as his son-in-law.
Eliezer was emotionally impressed by the miraculous ris-ing waters; however, he composed himself. Miracles werenot the criteria needed to become Yitzchak’s wife. Heknew that character transcends any miracle or genius. Infinding the wife of a patriarch and mother of a nation hedid not look for Rivka the miracle worker. He looked, andfound, the geshmahkeh mentch. •

VICTORY IN VANCOUVERStill in the clouds

take on an international challenge and participate in theBodwell Tournament in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Valley Torah Wolfpack continued its winning wayscapturing the gold by winning every one of the fivegames in the tournament competition including thechampionship game against Bodwell High School.Hometown fans, having witnessed VTHS defeating St.John’s, Pacific Torah Institute, King David and Colling-wood High Schools, filled the Bodwell High School tocapacity and with as much noise as you can imaginecheered the home team to encourage them to victory. But in a close and well played game Valley Torah pre-vailed 76-72.
While in Vancouver, the Wolfpack and their coachesalso visited a Jewish old age home where they helped cel-ebrate the 102nd birthday of one of the residents. “Theplayers were fantastic,” said Wolfpack Coach MottyMeisels. “Everyone gave 110% in everything they didfrom davening to dribbling to defending” In the 6 gamesthey’ve played so far this season VTHS has scored an av-erage of 82 points per game and have kept the opposi-tion to just 50 points per game. Rabbi Yossy Goldman was born in Brooklyn, New York to a distinguished Chabad family. In 1976 he was sent by the Lubavitcher Rebbe as shliach to serve the Jewish community of Johannesburg, South Africa.
He is Senior Rabbi of the Sydenham Highlands North Shul since 1986, and president of the South African Rabbinical Association
Is it a sin to argue with G-d? Is it sacrilegiousto question the Divine? Well, Abraham did it.Not for himself, but on behalf of the people
of Sodom, whom G-d had decided to destroy because oftheir wickedness. Abraham was the paragon of chesed, the personification of kindness and compassion. He grap-pled with the Almighty, attempting to negotiate a stay ofexecution for the inhabitants of the notorious cities ofSodom and Gomorrah.
"Will you destroy the righteous with the wicked?" he asksG-d. "Will the judge of all the earth not do justice?" "If there are50 righteous men, will you spare them? 45? 40... 30... 20... 10?"In the end, Abraham cannot find even a minyan of right-eous men in the cities and he gives up. And then the versereads, “V'Avraham shov l'mkomo” -- "And Abraham went backto his place." Having failed in his valiant attempt, he ac-knowledges defeat and retreats to his corner.
But there is also an alternative interpretation to thoselast words. And Abraham went back to his place can alsobe understood to mean that he went back to his ways, tohis custom. And what custom is that? To defend the un-derdog, to look out for the needy and to help those introuble, even if they are not the most righteous of people.Abraham refused to become disillusioned in defeat. Hewent right back to his ways, even though this particularattempt did not meet with success.
What happens when we lose? We hurt, we sulk, and wegive up. It didn't work, it's no use. It's futile, why bother?Just throw in the towel.
Not Abraham. Abraham stuck to his principles. He mayhave experienced a setback, but he would still championthe cause of justice. He would still speak out for those inperil. And he would still take his case to the highest au-thority in the universe, G-d Almighty Himself.
Abraham teaches us not to lose faith, not to deviatefrom our chosen path or our sincerely held convictions. If we believe it is the right thing to do, then it is right evenif there is no reward in sight. If it is right, then stick to it,no matter the outcome.
One of my favorite cartoon characters is good old Char-lie Brown in Peanuts. In one strip that sticks in my mem-ory there is a storm raging outside and Charlie Brown isdetermined to go out to fly his kite. His friends tell himhe must be crazy to attempt flying a kite in this weather,it'll be destroyed by the wind in no time. But in the lastframe we see Charlie, resolutely marching out the door, his kite firmly tucked under his arm, and the caption reads,"A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do."
Do we believe in our principles of faith because of ex-pediency? Are we virtuous because we believe it is the wayto the good life? Are we waiting for the big payoff for ourgood behavior? What happens when we don't see it? Dowe become frustrated, disillusioned and angry at G-d?
Some people become religious for the wrong reasons. They are looking for some magical solution to their prob-lems in life. And when the problems don't disappear asquickly or as magically as they expected, they give up theirreligious lifestyle. It didn't work; I'm outta here.
Virtue is its own reward. Sleeping better at night becauseour conscience is clear is also part of the deal. Or, in thewords of the Sages, "the reward for a mitzvah is the mitz-vah."
Our founding father reminds us that a Jew's gotta dowhat a Jew's gotta do, regardless of the outcome. Whetherwe see the fruits of our labors or not, if it's the right thingto do, then carry on doing it.
May we all be true children of Abraham. •

When do factories start preparing for Pesach? Twomonths before Pesach? Three?
In practice, SKS starts its Pesach kashrus preparationsright after Simchas Torah! Kashrus supervisors gath-ered in the offices of SKS, Israel, on the night afterSimchas Torah to receive updates and instructions re-garding Pesach kashrus supervision. Why start so early?
The answer lies in the great demand for kosher-for-Passover products. SKS supervises the production ofraw materials that go into many different foods, and
its level of kashrus is widely accepted and greatly in demand. The chocolate bar you eat next Pesach may containsugar and flavorings that were produced in December under the strict supervision of SKS. Today’s food industryuses many additives, and for a food to be certified as kosher for Passover every single ingredient must be strictlysupervised.
SKS mashgichim left Israel the day after Simchas Torah, to get to work. After all, Pesach is coming!
