Welcome Back Tobin School Families and Neighborhood Residents;

Welcome to the Tobin Community School / Neighborhood Council’s Fall Session of programming. I hope you had a

wonderful summer and enjoyed some time off with family and friends.

I would like to extend an extra warm welcome to all of our new families. The Community School staff will be

working very closely with school administration to provide your child with programming that will enhance your child’s

school day.

I am looking forward to this new school year as we invite many new families to the Tobin School Community. Please

stop by and visit our office to say hello, and see what our program has to offer. Listed in this brochure are our offerings for

the Fall Session.

Our goal is to serve the Tobin Community the best that we possibly can. In order to do that we are asking your help,

join our Neighborhood Community Council. Our first meeting will be Thursday, October 20th at 6:00PM. Childcare will be

provided.

FALL SESSION DATES Classes will begin September 19th and end December 16th. We are offering a FALL FUN JUMP START WEEK from September 12th

to September 16th.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE • The registration form attached to the back of this program should be

filled out and dropped off during the noted registration times below. • Additional forms will need to be completed. • There is an annual application fee of $20 per child due at registration. • Registrations must be returned to the Community School Office. • Registrations are taken on a first come first serve basis. • After these dates registrations will be accepted on a space available

basis. • Class size limits will be strictly enforced. • You will be notified only if the class you have chosen is full. If you do

not hear from us you may assume your child is enrolled in the selected class.

• Children’s House classes marked with an * (asterisk) are only available to 4 & 5 Year olds.

• Children may only register for classes in their appropriate age group.

REGISTRATION HOURS Friday, September 9th / 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm Monday, September 12th / 10:00 am to 12:00 pm & 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm Tuesday, September 13th / 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm Wednesday, September 14th / 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm All registrations will take place in Room 130 – The Community School Office

PAYMENTS: Full payment is due at registration, however a payment plan can be arranged with the director. Checks or Money Orders (NO CASH) should be made payable to: Tobin Community School. If you have an outstanding balance with any Department of Human Service Program, your child’s registration will not be accepted until all payments are made. Class fee’s are based on the number of weeks a class meets. Early Release Days and holidays are not counted in the number of classes.

REFUNDS If a class is not fully enrolled, the class may be cancelled. You will be notified and given a refund, or you may choose to enroll in another class. We understand that there may be times when a class is not what your child expected. A full refund will be given if we are notified within 24 hours after the first class. Refunds will not be given if a child misses a class. EARLY RELEASE DAYS Regular scheduled classes are not held on early release days. A special activity or field trip will be planned. Flyers will be distributed through the school via backpack express the week before. Children must be registered in advance to attend any early release day trips. FINANCIAL AID Partial scholarships are available. Please request a financial aid form from the director. Income verification in the form of W – 2 or 4 current pay stubs must be submitted with the application. All information provided will be kept confidential. SCHOLARSHIP DRIVE We have many requests for financial aid. So that we may provide assistance to those families, we ask anyone who can to make a donation on their registration form. We thank you for your help. HOLIDAYS or SNOW DAYS Classes are not held on city holidays, snow days or on days the Cambridge Public Schools are closed. LATE FEE POLICY All children must be promptly picked up at the end of class. There will be a late fee of $1.00 per minute for each minute you are late after the scheduled pick up time. Late fees must be paid within 48 hours to avoid disrupting your child’s participation in the program. Chronic lateness may result in suspension of your child’s participation in the program. The office clock will be used to determine the time.

The Tobin Neighborhood Council & Community School is a Department of Human Service Program. This program offers year round activities to all age groups, including school age enrichment courses, out‐of‐school time activities, vacation and summer camps, family events, adult courses, and senior trips and activities. The Tobin Neighborhood Council is always seeking new members to help the Community School identify the needs, concerns, and interests of the community. All meetings begin at 6:00pm. After School Enrichment

Grades CH – 6 1:45 – 5:30 Monday – Friday

Join us for afternoons of fun, learning and friends. Children will have their choice of three enrichment classes each day along with “Laps,

Snacks and Raps” and Homework Help for grades 2 - 6.

Monthly tuition payment plan available to include all Early release days, Jump Start week

and Dec. Drop In.

Monday’s – Friday’s 1:45 – 2:30 PM

Laps, Raps & Snack Fee: $25.00 per day/per session

All classes begin at 2:30 PM. After a long day of being in the structured

environment of a child’s classroom, we provide children with a short period of down time before

beginning the afternoon. During this time children will have the chance to RAP with friends, have LAPS

(playtime) outside, and have a nutritious SNACK.

Homework Help Center 2:30 – 3:25 / 3:25 – 4:20

Fee: $50.00 - $60.00 Instructor: Anne Gladfelter

This designated time period will allow students an opportunity to complete homework assignments with

assistance from our staff. When homework is completed learning games will be provided for the

remainder of the class.

Fall Explorers Grades: K (All Children’s House) 2:30 – 3:25 Fee: $50 Instructor: Kelly McLaughlin Enjoy some outdoor fun and explore the beautiful fall season. Children will play some old time favorite games like hopscotch, jump rope, four squares and Squirrels and Nuts along with creating fall crafts with colorful leaves of the season. Spanish / Espanol Grades: CH (Ages 4/5 only) 2:30 – 3:25 Grades: 1 – 3 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $70.00 Instructor: Clara Perciado Clara has been with us for a number of years. Her gentle way of teaching makes it easy for children to learn conversational Spanish through music, stories, games and dialogue. Children will also learn Spanish songs to make learning fun. (Class Limit 10)

Yoga Yogi’s Grades: K (All Children’s House) 2:30 – 3:25 Grades: 1 – 3 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $65 Instructor: Lauren Farenga Professional Yoga Instructor will engage children in exploring playful yoga poses, animated breathing exercises, visual imagery and imaginative relaxation techniques. These skills will convey lessons of self-expression, body image, social skills, positive thinking and environmental awareness. (Class Limit 10)

Ceramics & Sculpture Art

Grades: 1 – 2 2:30 – 3:25 Grades: 3 – 6 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $80 Instructor: Lisa Muscato Discover the magical qualities of clay while hand building whimsical sculptures, coil pots, pinch pots and much more using air dry system. Other three dimensional projects will be conducted and explored using recycled materials, and other mediums, all the while learning basic fundamentals of this ancient art form. (Class Limit 12)

Fun With Food Grades: 1 - 2 2:30 – 3:25 Fee: $65 Instructor: Katie Gladfelter In this class it’s O.K. to use food to create art. Children will construct pasta necklaces, build houses with graham crackers, and make potato stamps and other fun projects. We’ll also make quick and simple, healthy snacks including fruit smoothies, trail mix and more. (Class Limit 10)

Science: Exploring Living Things Grades: K (All Children’s House) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $60 Instructor: Annie Gladfelter While studying the natural world, students will become explorers of science, learning how to question and seek information. Each week students will examine and question the growth of plants and other living things. Students will learn about food sources and habitat needs, as well as their life cycles by collecting live data in each session. (Class Limit 10)

Cont…. The Art of Collage Grades: K (All Children’s House) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $60 Instructor: Kelly McLaughlin The teacher will guide children in making 3D art forms using various objects. Children will build sculptures and collages combining 2D drawing and painting with 3D materials such as yarn, fabric and an assortment of smaller objects. (Class Limit 12) Let’s Make Music Grades: K 3:25 – 4:20 (Children’s House 3 & 4 yr olds) Fee: $55 Instructor: Lynsey N. Bourquin Children will be introduced to songs, finger plays, chants and movements using a variety of rhythm instruments and play materials, incorporating elements of both traditional and contemporary children's music. (Class Limit 12) Sports Clinic Grades: 3 – 6 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $50.00 Instructor: Stan Duperval A different sport each week. Floor Hockey, Flag football, soccer, volleyball etc… Being a team player, team spirit, and sportsmanship will be stressed. Literacy / Story Art Grades: K (All Children’s House)) 4:20 – 5:15 Fee: $50 Instructor: Kelly McLaughlin Each week a theme will be selected from a story we’ve read, followed by an art project consisting of short skits, art or music based on the theme. (Class Limit 12)

Grades: 1 – 6 4:25 – 5:15 Fee: $50 Instructor: CS Staff Complete your child’s day with a smile as they spend extra time with friends participating in interactive activities to include arts & crafts, sports & board games. Time to finish up homework assignments too! Computer Lab Workshop Grades: 1 - 6 4:20 – 5:15 Fee: $50.00 Instructor: Community School Staff An opportunity for children to practice their key boarding and computer skills along with sharpening educational skills with a wide variety of the schools age appropriate educational and fun software. Gym Games & Outdoor Play Grades: 1 - 6 4:20 – 5:15 Fee: $50 Instructor: Stan Duperval A classic mix of simple group games, hoops and time to end the day outside. Non competitive games will be played, with teamwork stressed as the most important goal.

Private Piano (1/2 hour lesson) Grades K - 8 2:45 – 5:45 Fee: $200.00 Instructor: Armine Karpetian Armine has been with us for 8 years. She has built a wonderful program with many returning students. She is an excellent teacher for first time students as well as the experienced pianist.

Developing coordination and promoting self-esteem, combined with learning basic positions and terminology. Through weekly themes, and the use of props this class will become a magical dance experience for your child. (Class Limit 10)

Introduction to Soccer Grades: K (All Children’s House) 2:30 – 3:25 Fee: $55.00 Instructor: Phil Rizutto Children will focus on conditioning, drills and games. The primary goal will be that children will learn a real sense of how important teamwork is to this game.

(Class Limit 12) Fabric Art Grades: 1 – 3 2:30 – 3:25 Fee: $70 Instructor: Katie Gladfelter Using a variety of materials including fabric, felt and fuzz children will create wearable or usable art.

African Drumming Cambridge Performance Project Grades: 1 – 4 2:30 – 3:25 Grades: K (Children’s House) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $90 Instructor: Allison Stamiris Students will learn authentic rhythms from West Africa and the Caribbean. They will play West African drums and other percussion instruments. The class will also give students a fun opportunity to create their own rhythms. (Class Limit 12) Paint, Paper & Paste Grades: K (Children’s House) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $65.00 Instructor: Lynsey N. Bourquin Does your child like to make a mess when doing art, well here is the chance to do just that. Every week your child would get to use all sorts of art media such as finger paints, play dough, foamy, sculpey clay and more. (Class Limit 10)

Creepy Crawlies Grades: K (Children’s House)) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $60 Instructor: Betsy Hepner Does it crawl, does it creep, and does it fly? Learn all about those creepy, crawly things we call bugs. Through hands on science, art activities and stories we’ll make them a little less creepy. You may even end up liking them! (Class Limit 10)

Calling All Sports Grades: 1 – 2 3:25 - 4:20 Fee: $60 Instructor: Stan Duperval Children will have the opportunity to try many different sports. We will offer Bowling, T – Ball, Soccer and Mini Basketball just to name a few. We’ll stress fair play and team work.

Bourquin Children love our Lego and Duplo class that provides them with buckets of blocks to create in groups’ huge dino lands to enormous skyscrapers

The Art of Puppetry Grades: K (Children’s House) 2:30 – 3:25 Grades: 1 – 3 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $65.00 Instructor: Professional Artist Lisa Muscato Explore the fun of puppet making and storytelling! Create character puppets, and masks using various materials. Students will be encouraged to write stories for their characters, and create theater sets and backdrops for performances. (Class Limit 10) Ocean Discovery Grades: K (All Children’s House) 2:30 – 3:25 Fee: $60 Instructor: Kelly McLaughlin A day at the beach right in our classroom! Children will have the opportunity to identify different shells and the animals that lived in them. We will also dive under the sea and study the different species that live there. (Class Limit 12)

Friends of Fresh Pond Grades: 2 - 3 2:30 – 4:20 (Please note this is a 2 hour class) Fee: $110 Instructor: Julie Croston & Asst. Children will explore the animal and botanical residents of Fresh Pond Reservation through field trips to various parts of the Reservation and through interviews with Fresh Pond staff and other experts. They will learn about the reservation's history and its current role in the city and in the municipal water supply. Each participant will document his or her own discoveries and experiences in a personal field journal. Activities may also include a scavenger hunt, playing games at Kingsley Park, making a wall display or mural for the school. (Class Limit 10)

Legomania Grades: 1 – 3 2:30 – 3:25 Fee: $55.00 Instructor: Community School Staff Kids love our Lego class which provides them with buckets and buckets of Lego’s to create in groups’ or individually. You can build anything from huge ships to enormous skyscrapers.

Little Picasso Painting Grades: K (Children’s House) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $65 Instructor: Kelly McLaughlin A great introduction to various types of painting. Using watercolor, tempera & finger paints students will be introduced to a wide range of possibilities, themes and techniques. (Class Limit 10) Group Games Grades: K (Children’s House) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $55 Instructor: Lynsey N. Bourquin We’ll play all sorts of old fashioned games. Games like Red Rover, Duck, Duck Goose, Hide n’ Seek and more. Lots of fun and running around. On Stage – Drama Pretenders Grades: K (Children’s House) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $65 Instructor: Annie Gladfelter Using stories, music, games & play-acting, students will learn to express emotions appropriately through verbal communication. Children will participate in role-plays and skits. Music & Drama can lead to strong literacy and group participation skills. (Class Limit 12)

Sports Clinic Grades: 3 – 6 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $50.00 Instructor: Stan Duperval A different sport each week. Floor Hockey, Flag football, soccer, volleyball etc… Being a team player, team spirit, and sportsmanship will be stressed.

Karate Grades: 2 - 6 4:20 - 5:15 Fee: $70.00 Instructor: Henry Parker Henry will blend work and fun together so children will learn Self Confidence, Self Respect & Self Control while learning the disciplines of this martial art. A safe learning experience and an excellent way to let out excess energy. (Class Limit 10)

Grades: 1 – 3 2:30 – 3:25 Grades: K (All Children’s House) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $65 Instructors: Michelle Roderick “REVELS Inc.” Instructors will introduce traditional songs and singing games from around the world. Children will learn folk songs, dances and games from various cultures. A demonstration for sharing with family and friends will be held in the spring. (Class Limit 12)

These activities inspire student’s environmental leadership. Using the Green fox Five model each week we will focus on a different topic to include solar power, energy, waste, recycling, green space, food and agriculture . (Class Limit 12)

Model Magic Creations Grades: K (Children’s House) 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $65.00 Instructor: Lynsey Bourgin Model Magic is super soft pliable clay that provides children a wonderful medium for creating sculptures and other projects with ease. On Stage – Drama Pretenders Grades: 1 – 3 3:25 – 4:20 Fee: $65 Instructor: Annie Gladfelter Using stories, music, games & play-acting, students will learn to express emotions appropriately through verbal communication. A restorative flow for every level, this class is open to teachers, parents, and the broader community. It matters not whether you

have practiced yoga before – all are welcome & encouraged to participate in this fully relaxing yet invigorating way to end the day.
