Fall Enrichment Classes 2018 We are thrilled to offer a variety of enrichment classes to our students grades JK -8 this fall. Most classes run for six weeks beginning the first week in October. Lower School students who enroll in an enrichment class will be sent to the After School program at the end of the day where they will have snack. We are thrilled to offer a variety of enrichment classes to our students grades JK -8 this fall. Most

classes run for six weeks beginning the first week in October. Lower School students who enroll in an

enrichment class will be sent to the After School program at the end of the day where they will have

Monday Offerings:

Flag Football

Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: October 1 – November 12 (no class October 8) Grade Levels: K – 2 and 3 – 5 Fee: $90 Offered by: Overtime Athletics Huddle Up and get ready for Flag Football to become an instant classic. Kids are lining up to score touchdowns and get a taste of the most popular game in the country! Players will get a chance to be running backs, wide receivers, defensive ends, and corner backs. Learn to pass, catch, run routes and punt like the pros! We'll practice these skills while playing Button Hook, Down & Out, Pitch & Run and First & Ten. Empowered to Jump:

Time: 3:30 – 4:30 pm Dates: October 1 – November 12 (no class October 8) Grade Levels: gr. JK – 5 Cost: $100 Offered by: Jump Starz JumpStarz uses the fun and exciting sport of double-dutch to build confidence, improve cardiovascular health & nutrition, while empowering youth to set and reach goals. Students who participate in the JumpStarz program will participate in a jump rope class one hour per week with the goal of improved health, empowerment and various jumping skills. Through lecture, video and interactive engagement, “Empowerment” skills will measure progression and proficiency in double-dutch, long rope and single rope techniques.

Gymnastics: Time: 3:30 – 4:30 pm Dates: October 1 – November 12 (no class October 8) Grade Levels: gr. JK – 5 Cost: $75 Offered by: CORE Kids Academy At CORE, our mission is to instill and develop confidence, fitness and life skills through gymnastics. We believe every child has different strengths and talents, and we strive to enhance each child’s individual physical capabilities through personal coaching in a group setting. Our students will increase coordination, balance, flexibility, strength and self-confidence through tumbling, hopping, stretching and conditioning. Our certified instructors will progressively work to develop fitness skills and gymnastics skills like forward rolls, backward rolls, handstands, cartwheels and handspring progressions using proper form and execution. Students will be grouped according to age.

Design The Runway Time: 4 – 5 pm Dates: October 1 – November 12 (no class October 8) Grade Levels: gr. 5- 8 Cost: $125 Offered by: Little Scholars Design your very own fashion line with us! Budding designers will create a fashion portfolio, create a one of a kind piece with recyclable goods and end the week with a Runway Show to stop Fashion Week! We will participate in several design challenges too. Come design the runway with us!

Fall-tastic Fundamental Drawing Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: October 2 – November 6 Grade Levels: K –gr. 5 Fee: $100 Offered by: Young Rembrandts Enroll your elementary student in a Young Rembrandts drawing class. Our bountiful selection of drawings introduces our students to a fascinating world of color, pattern, and design. Keeping with the season, our students will create fall-themed illustrations like taffy apples and a farmer’s scarecrow. Stylized art styles will be explored through our tarantula line art and Van Gogh-inspired drawing featuring vibrant sunflowers. All this and more await your child in a Young Rembrandts classroom! Golf Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: October 2 – November 6 Cost: $120 Grade Levels: JK – gr. 5 Offered by: David Neal, Sportz 4 Life Sportz 4 Life coaches supply everything for your child - Including: Age appropriate kid size golf clubs, foam and low compression balls, miniature pitching/chipping nets, putting greens & lots of FUN! Kids will learn all about golf: pitching, putting, chipping, driving, hand-eye coordination, balance, how to keep score, fun golf games, and positive character traits. Wednesday Offerings:

World of Wizards Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: October 3 – November 7 Grade Level: gr. 3 - 5 Cost: $100 Offered by : Little Scholars Calling all wizard fans! This is like no other class you have ever experienced. We will take a magical journey into the world of wizards. We will design trading cards, make a personal crest, create a treasure hunt, have a Triwizard tournament, and participate in activities that will astound all Muggles.

Kids in the Kitchen Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: October 3 – November 7 Cost: $120 Location: Lower School Innovation Station Grade Level: JK – gr. 5 Offered by: Sabra Willhite, Steward School faculty Our popular cooking class is back with all new recipes! Students will learn kitchen safety, read recipes, and create simple yet delicious dishes. At the end of the session, students will bring home their own cookbooks so they can recreate the food they’ve learned to prepare. Aspiring chefs will meet on Wednesdays with Mrs. Willhite.

Chess Class Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: October 3 – November 7 Cost: $80 Grade Level: gr. 2 - 5 Offered by: Championship Chess Championship Chess presents a systematic, fun way to build chess skills during chess instruction and while students play. Studies show that chess improves math, reading and problem-solving skills and our methods connect these academic benefits to our classes. Classes include instruction as well as chess play and guided analysis. Students will also be able to accomplish Achievement Cards online outside of the classroom.

Doodler Plus Art Time: 4 – 5 pm Dates: October 3 – November 7 Cost: $90 Grade Level: gr. 5 - 8 Offered by: Abrakadoodle Our Doodler Plus curriculum includes lessons that focus upon areas that are of special interest to Middle School students including drawing, painting, sculpture, and 3D. It contains subject areas that are popular with Middle School students such as music and portraits. The lessons include a number of collaborative projects that involve the students working together. Some of the lessons in this series are:

1. Illuminated Manuscript Doodle – Students learn about illuminated manuscripts and lettering. 2. Van Gogh Portrait Doodle – Students create a portrait, learn about van Gogh and color

interaction 3. Dubai Architecture Doodle – Students learn about architecture and the city of Dubai

Thursday Offerings:

Soccer Shots

Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: October 4 – November 8 Grade Levels: JK – gr. 2 Cost: $120 Offered by: Evan Harding, Soccer Shots (soccershots.org/Richmond) Soccer Shots is an engaging children’s soccer program with a focus on character development. Our caring team positively impacts children’s lives on and off the field through best-in-class coaching, curriculum and communication. Our coaches are the best-trained in the business. Our expert-approved curriculum is age and developmentally appropriate, and aligns with early childhood education standards.

Mini Med School Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: October 4 – November 8 Grade Level: JK Cost: $100 Offered by : Little Scholars Is there a doctor in the school? Join us as we bring Mini Med School to your school! Our little doctors will use stuffed animal patients to take blood pressure readings, give “stitches”, put on a cast, and make their own first aid kit, all while learning lots about what doctors, dentists, EMTs, and other medical professionals do on a daily basis.

Yoga Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: October 4 – November 8 Cost: $100 Grade Levels: JK – gr. 5 Offered by: Motion Mom In Motion Mom Yoga, we use songs, games and fun activities to learn yoga and meditation. With an overarching goal of teaching children how to recognize and manage difficult emotions, we teach emotional intelligence masked by lots of fun and silliness. The children will learn the history of yoga and meditation, the purpose and how to implement their own home practice.

Jewelry

Time: 4 - 5 p.m. Dates: October 4 – November 8 Grade Level: gr. 3 – 8 Cost: $120 Offered by: Kathy Karmolinski, Steward School faculty During this class, students will learn how to create beautiful, handmade jewelry. In this intensive beading class, students will learn jewelry making techniques and complete several projects, including making earrings, bracelets and necklaces. After the class ends, students will have supplies to continue jewelry making at home. Students must be able to tie knots in order to participate. Previous students are welcome – they can always learn something new.

Fall 2018 – Half Day Adventures

Regular aftercare will still be run on Steward half days but we will offer these options in addition should students wish to participate. Aftercare fees will not be charged for Half Day Adventure participants.

September 19: Laser Tag at Laser Quest

Time: 12:30 – 3 (Students will be charged for Afterschool Care only if they stay past 3:15 p.m.)

Cost: $25

Grade Levels: K – gr. 8

Offered by: Laser Quest Richmond

Laser Quest combines the classic game of hide-and-seek and tag with a high tech twist. The multi-level arenas have swirling fog, energetic music and fun lurking around every corner. Register early – spaces are limited!!

October 26: Climbing at Peak Experiences

Time: 12 – 3 p.m. (Students will be charged for Afterschool Care only if they stay past 3:15 p.m.)

Cost: $50

Grade Levels: JK – gr 8

Offered by: Peak Experiences

Peak Experiences Indoor Climbing Center is a 13,000 sq. ft. facility featuring top rope climbing, lead climbing, bouldering, and auto-belay systems. We will have two hours to climb under the supervision of Peak Experiences certified staff.

TENNIS

This program is offered by Kurt Hammerschmidt, 4 time All-American in tennis at Ferris State University and winner of the University's first ever NCAA championship in 1989. He traveled the world playing tennis professionally after college. He holds five National titles ad 15 state titles in Michigan, Maryland, and Virginia in singles and doubles. Before creating K and L sports with his wife Lisa he was the Head Tennis professional and Director of Junior Tennis at the prestigious Congressional Country Club in Bethesda for six years. The Steward tennis program is grouped by grade. Each class will be broken down into subgroups to ensure that each child is training with players of the same ability. Mini-Spartans Tennis Time: 3:30 – 4:30 Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays September 10 – October 17 Cost: $220 Grade Levels: gr. 1 and 2

Mini Spartans is for the true beginner who would like to be introduced to tennis. The class will cover parts of the racquet and court, as well as the different strokes.

Junior Spartans Tennis

Time: 4:40 – 5:30

Dates: Mondays and Wednesdays September 10 – October 17

Cost: $220

Grade Levels: gr. 3 - 5

Junior Spartans have little or no experience. Fundamentals on forehands, backhands, and serves will be covered. Students will learn the tracking and reception skills necessary to develop rally skills. Serve and score is the main theme of this level.

Lower School Homework Club

Lower School Homework Club

Time: 3:30 – 4:30

Dates: Monday through Thursday

Start date: to be determined

Cost: weekly fee of $80.00 to be billed monthly via the Business Office

Grade Level: grades 3- 5

Want more family time at night? We realize that nightly homework and studying for tests can be as hard on

parents as it is on the students. Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30, an experienced teacher will provide

structure, and organization and study skills, while monitoring the homework completion to ensure your child is

accurately practicing his skills. Students report to afterschool, have a quick snack and then are picked up for the

homework time. Test Prep methods will also be an emphasis as time allows. Families can sign up on a monthly

basis. Space will be limited.

Music Lessons (Strings and Guitars)

The Greater Richmond School of Music (GRSM) will provide music instruction through extra-curricular private and group lessons at The Steward School for the 2018-2019 school year. Registration Forms should be scanned and emailed to [email protected], faxed to 866-357-0239 or mailed to GRSM, 9109 Dickey Drive, Mechanicsville Va 23116. Tuition is payable in full up front or in equal monthly payments during the session. There is a one-time Family Registration Fee of $25.

Lessons are scheduled weekly during the term and are offered in 30, 45, or 60 minute intervals. Recitals are included in tuition and will be held at the end of each semester for all registered students who are interested. Beginning ages for each instrument varies. Group Classes start the week of 9/10/18

Group classes provide a high-quality foundation for musical study. Taught in a small group setting, these classes are an alternative to traditional private lessons and offer an exciting and affordable approach to beginning musical instruction. A minimum number of registrations is required in order to confirm a group class. Introduction to Strings (Gr 2-5) The Introduction to Strings course for children in Grades 1-5, is designed to give a basic introduction to the violin, viola and cello. Students will learn proper left/right hand techniques, anatomy of the instrument, how to produce a sound, and simple musical concepts. Students would also work on rhythms and simple songs, in addition to the basic instrument posture/bow hold. The course would then go on to teach more challenging beginning strings music and expand on concepts and techniques to get the student ready for further group or individual study. (50 minutes) Day of Week: Tuesdays (9/11/18 – 1/22/19) Time: 3:30-4:20pm Tuition: $425 Materials: Instrument & Accessories; Lesson/Method Book(s); Music Stand Guitar: (Gr 1-3) This course is for beginning guitar students in Grades 1-3, and functions as a general introduction to the guitar. Students will learn proper left/right hand techniques, rhythm, musical notation, chords, improvisation, and tuning. Literature will be selected from various genres both for the solo guitar as well as the guitar ensemble. Students must provide their own instrument, and recitals are included in tuition.
