  • Inheritance Tax (IHT) is currently chargedat a rate of 40% on the amount by whichyour estate exceeds 325,000 and up tothat sum at 0% (the nil rate band). NoIHT is due on any gifts to your spouse/civil partner, charity or a political party.Married couples or civil partners can claimany unused proportion of their spouses nilrate band against their combined estateson the death of the survivor, which meansthat potentially the first 650,000 could befree of IHT. If you think that your estatemay be liable to IHT on your death then itis advisable to check that you have takenadvantage of a few useful IHT planningtips.

Make sure you have used your annualallowance of 3,000 by making gifts up tothat amount in each financial year.

In addition to your annual allowanceyou can make gifts of up to 250 per recipient but you cannot make these giftsto anyone who has received all or anypart of your annual allowance.

If you make any gifts in excess of yourannual allowance the amount of the giftwill still be counted as part of your estatefor IHT purposes unless you survive the giftby seven years.

You can, however, give gifts on theoccasion of a wedding. Parents can eachgive 5,000, grandparents and other relatives can each give 2,500 and anyone else can give 1,000 and you mayeven get a thank you!

Any maintenance payments to yourspouse or civil partner, your ex-spouse orformer civil partner, relatives who aredependent on you because of old age orinfirmity or your children (including adopted or step-children) who are under18 or in full time education will be exemptfor IHT.

If you have a death in service benefit,a pension pot or life cover make sure

that these lump sums are written into trustfor your family. Merely nominating beneficiaries may not be completely IHTefficient.

Consider whether you have anyexcess income that you could give awayrather than investing it and adding to yourpotential IHT liability. If you find that yourincome exceeds your usual spending thenit is possible to give away the excess without having to survive seven years. Thegift is immediately effective for IHT purposes.

Whilst the above may be useful IHT planning should always be tailored to yourparticular circumstances and it is easy tooverlook the finer points. The devil is in thedetail, as they say.Next steps? If you would like to discuss this further thenplease do not hesitate to contact NicolaDudley at PWT Advice LLP on 0845 8339025 or 07900 931478 [email protected]

  • Easter Egg HuntLet's get the basics

out of the way first. Hide the eggs.Either let the smaller children have ahead start or have separate hunts forthe older and younger kids.Alternately, pair each little child withan adult. Otherwise, the school-agekids will wipe the area clean of eggsbefore a toddler can even get going.

Egg RollEach child is given a hard-boiledEaster egg. The object is to get it fromthe starting line to the finish line. Thereare several ways to roll the egg. It canbe pushed with a spoon, feet ornoses(!) without cracking the shell.

Steal the EggThis game requires two teams and areferee. Team members are num-bered, opposing teams lined up oppo-site each other, and a plastic Easteregg is placed in the middle. The refer-ee calls out a number, and the twoplayers with that number approachthe middle of the field. The object is topick up the egg and get back to yourline without being tagged by the otherplayer. If a player succeeds in doingso, his or her team gets a point. If theplayer is tagged, the other team getsa point. Ten points wins the game. Aplayer can be tagged only after pick-ing up the egg, so strategy is impor-tant. Is it best to go for the egg, or waitfor the other person to pick it up?

Egg and Spoon Relay RaceThis is a great game for the grown-upsto participate along with the kids. Theplayers are divided into two teams. Each team is divided into two groups, one at Point A, one at Point B. The firstplayer is given an egg in a spoon tocarry from Point A to Point B. At thatpoint the egg and spoon are handed

off to the next competitor, who carriesit back to Point A to the next competi-tor. A dropped egg means that theperson carrying the egg must go backto where he or she started from. Usehard-boiled eggs unless you are willingto sacrifice a couple dozen eggs. Ifusing raw eggs, the person who dropsthe egg has to go back to the startingpoint and get another egg. The firstteam to complete the relay wins.

Egg TossThis game is played with raw eggs, so ifthe kids have on their good clothes, you may want to put plastic trash bagsover them to protect them. You couldplay with boiled eggs, but the break-ing of the eggs provides most of thefun. Each competitor has a partner. It'sgood to pair a young kid with an olderperson. The partners stand about fivefeet apart, and a raw egg is tossedfrom one partner to the next. Thosewho catch the eggs without breakingthem continue in the game; the othersare out. After each successful catch, the players must take one step back-ward so that the tosses are longer andlonger. The last team left with anunbroken egg wins the game. Thisgame is great fun for family reunions, too.

Egg BowlingThis game is played similarly to lawnbowls. It can be played indoors or out. Each player uses a colored boiledegg. A plain white boiled egg is usedas the target. Players compete to seewho can roll their egg closest to thewhite egg without touching it. The firstperson to win a certain number ofrounds--usually five or ten--wins thegame. Alternately, use a chocolateEaster bunny as the target. The winnerof the game gets the chocolatebunny.

Functional fitness exercises train yourmuscles to help you do everyday activities safelyand efficiently.

Some people exercise to look a certain way and some people do it tobenefit their life.

Doing functional things while exercising is the best way to build yourbody up for future tasks.

With everyday tasks our body takes abeating, so why not build yourself up tobe better. Functional fitness exercises aredesigned to train anddevelop your muscles tomake it easier and saferto perform everydayactivities.

Functional fitness exercises or programmesare there to train yourmuscles to work togetherand prepare them for daily tasks. Theydo this by simulating common movements that you do at home, atwork or in sports. You will be using various muscles in your upper and lowerbody at the same time and also work-ing on your core stability.

Functional fitness exercises can bedone at home or at the gym. They tenduse lots of joints and muscles at once.Training like this can reduce your risk ofinjury and improve your life. You will beable to do every day tasks easier as youimprove balance, muscle strength, posture and coordination.

I suggest making sure you include different types of body weight exerciseslike squats and lunges. But also do stepups and basic weight bearing exercisesto help with all functional things.

Always include exercises thatstrengthen your legs, gluteus maximus, lower back, arms and shoulders like lifting and walking. The exercises do notneed to include balance aids to befunctional; you should always try to useyour body rather than an aid like a Bosuor Swiss ball when doing functional

things. This is because youwouldnt really be usingthem in a daily task. Trythings that are like holdinga child and moving and placing the child back tothe floor. You imitate this inthe gym with squats, walking lunges or deadlifts while holding a weight. Think

about things that will lengthen andstrengthen lots of muscles in your bodyat once as this is more like the things youwill do day to day.

Please try and think about the wayyou are doing these exercises. You mustwatch your form and make sure someone is able to correct your postureif needed as any exercises not donecorrectly can lead to problems.

Cloud Storage for the home:One of the big early selling points ofcloud computing has been theavailability of cheap, plentiful storage space for photos, videos, work documents and anything elseyou can think of. Cloud storageproviders include UK-basedMemstore, along with U.S companies such as Dropbox,Amazon, Apple, Google andMicrosoft.

Its important to check out thevarious options and not just sign upto the most familiar brand names,as costs can vary depending on thestorage needed. Its also well worthconsidering a UK-based providerlike Memset, as theyll be fully-

compliant with UK specific laws andregulations, which isnt the case forbusinesses based elsewhere.

For peace of mind, backing uponce to an external hard drive andonce to a cloud service means thatyou have security whatever happens. And its low cost Memstore is a great example as youonly pay for the space you use andwhen you download beyond largeamounts. For instance, you canstore up to 100GB and download20GB per month for just 3.95 permonth. Streaming is the topic nextmonth. For further advice on all things computing, please call KeystrokeAssociates on 01883 346516.
