Dear Chamber Members,I would like to start off by congratulating the 2014 class of In Business “40 Under 40”. If you are not familiar with the list, it celebrates some of the area’s brightest and most giving professionals in our communities across the Greater Madison area. The Chamber’s own Lisa DuChateau is on the list this year. Her endless drive to help others no doubt helped put her on a list of phenomenal professionals. Who knew she was so handy with a hammer?

Other Chamber member notables were: Jean-Paul Aime, Mass Mutual; Abby Attoun, City of Middleton; Matt Duffy and Jake Siudzinski, The QTI Group; Shauna Gnorski, First Business Financial Services; Jason Huett, Kicks Unlimited; Nissa Judd, Integral Building Systems; Jason Kadow, KMA Bodilly CPAs and Consultants; Peter Osman, Borakove Osman LLC; Eric Schmidt, CG Schmidt, Inc.; Kayla Storlid, Kayla’s Custom Cleaning, LLC; and Jenna Weber, SVA.

As I read through the list, what stood out to me was not only how many of the emerging business stars I knew but how many of them I had met through the Middleton Chamber of Commerce. What that means to me is that our organization is filled with some pretty special individuals. Seek them out and get to know them - utilize the Chamber staff or our Ambassadors to help you connect.

Be sure to check out your fellow members that made the Madison Magazine “Best

of Madison” and “Best Places to Work” lists. Congratulations to all!

Shifting focus, I want to leave you with a membership tip. No one likes to make or receive a cold call. A great way to take advantage of your membership is to use the chamber website. I encourage you to go the extra mile and visit the business directory on the Chamber website. I often cross the chamber directory with LinkedIn to facilitate relationships. An introduction from a chamber member or business partner makes it easier to begin and foster a lasting business relationship.

To paraphrase a mythical Chamber sage, relationship building is more like farming than hunting. It’s Spring, prepare to start planting those relationship seeds soon!

Sincerely,

Jason Guttenberg 2014 Board President

Business Connection - 2

Were you surprised to receive Madison Magazine’s Brian D. Howell Excellence in Innovation Award? Yes. I had no idea of how big of a deal it was until I went to Monona Terrace to receive the award. The appreciation they had for what I’ve done was l almost mind-boggling. It was truly an honor and very humbling.

What is the impact of SupraNet’s acquisition last year of Mad City Broadband? The acquisition helps us provide businesses with faster and more cost-effective Internet service. We just signed a 20-year contract with the City of Madison to build an extensive fiber-optic network with point-to-point wireless on the top of water towers. And we’re proud to give back to the community by providing free Wi-Fi at the Dane County Airport.

Tell me about your family and favorite pastimes. I live in Madison with my wife, Gretchen (a former Middleton Chamber Ambassador), and children, Nina, 7, and Kevin, 4, who attend Madison Community Montessori School in Middleton. I like flying and enjoy cycling, hiking in national parks and cross country skiing.

SupraNet is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Looking back, what are you most proud of? I’m most proud of the company culture we’ve built that allows people to grow, provides them with opportunities, a place they actually want to work, a happy culture. That’s the key to how we compete in the marketplace. We build authentic relationships with our clients built on trust. I’m very proud of the long-term commitment customers have shown us over the years, including some of our Middleton clients such as Gilson Inc. (16 years), The Bruce Company (11 years), Automation Components, Inc. (13 years) and Nonn’s Design Showplace (7 years).

If we have one innovation in this industry it is our integrity and commitment to transparency. We tell our clients the truth, even if we make a mistake, whereas some companies might not be so forthcoming. Another key to our success is that our customers know that when they call they can talk to the same group of people to get their problem solved and that’s important to them.

You’re involved in many organizations such as the Overture Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County, High Tech Happy Hour and the Forward Technology Festival & Conference. What do you hope to achieve in these leadership positions? This is part of who we are as a company. For us, it’s not just paying it forward, but creating an entrepreneurial ecosystem where startup and technology companies can thrive in the region. We’re very passionate about creating opportunities for people to meet and building a community of people who can support each other.

Meet: Bryan Chan President, SupraNet Communications, Inc.

Where did you grow up? What did you want to be when you grew up? When was the first time you used the Internet? I grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and moved to Madison to attend UW in 1986. Growing up I wanted to be a writer and my first job was in a book store. The first time I used the Internet was in 1984. I was at Stanford and my brother, who was at UC Berkeley, sent me an email. I remember thinking it was incredible that we could send email across the San Francisco Bay.

What led to the founding of SupraNet? In 1994 I went to a conference attended by major companies in the computer IT space. At the time, as ridiculous as it seems now, there was a big debate on whether or not the Internet could be used commercially and how that would happen. I thought if these guys didn’t know what they’re supposed to do, there’s probably a good opportunity to help local businesses figure it out.

What were some of the obstacles that you faced? I knew nothing, I didn’t have a business plan and I basically had no money. But I did have relationships, and before there was such a thing as an incubator, George Gialamas gave me a small room in his office. Having relationships is really what got it going for me and that is still true in terms of what we do today.

Chamber News

The Chamber staff celebrated the end of winter and beginning of spring with a short trip to Venus. Although there was some discussion over who would drive the rocket, it was agreed that the youngest staffer was most likely to survive the g-forces on take-off and therefore DuChateau was granted the honor (this in spite of Nutt’s insistent claim of being a “rocket surgeon”) with Delabarre and Frank riding shotgun. Many clever lessons were gleaned from the trip – look for slides at an upcoming GMM.

New Chamber staff member Brenda Delabarre has set world records for project completion. She has proven that a month’s worth of work can indeed be done in the blink of an eye. When asked about her strategy, Brenda shared this: “My background in auto F&I and mortgage lending really paid off here. Did I ever tell you about my mini-bike? It wasn’t a Honda because the family had strict Buy American standards. We had dogs and cats too – also American. That’s how I roll.” Next month, Brenda plans on wrapping up details for the 2017 Annual Celebration. Looks for slides at the next GMM.
