  • Anational musiceducation charityis providing anopportunity for local men to becomesingers with a free six-week course startingon 1 October. The North Surrey BarbershopHarmony Club, more popularly known asThe Downsmen, will be hosting theWednesday evening sessions at theMethodist Church Hall in Leatherhead.

The Downsmen perform locally at fairs, for charity fundraisers and even in nation-al competitions. Its members give differentreasons for joining saying: they thoughtthey couldnt sing; they last sang atschool; or that their partners thought theyshould get out more!

Learning to sing barbershop is both achallenge and a reward. Songs need tobe learnt by heart which is good for keep-ing the mind active. Breathing is improvedby pulling in air from the lower lungs.

Singing as a group increases awareness ofthose around you. And it also helps chapsthat are shy by surrounding them with ateam of supportive guys.

The Downsmen consists of men fromaround north Surrey, especially Sutton,Epsom and Leatherhead. aged from 30-80! For people who cant read music theyhave teach tracks that can be down-loaded and listened to. They sing a cap-pella and there are four different voiceparts: leads, who carry the tune, andtenors, basses and baritones who createthe harmony.

The groups experienced musical direc-tor Lisa chooses the tunes, teaches goodpractice and helps develop individualmembers to sing and present to their bestability.

    For more information, please call AllanScott on 020 8642 8104 or David Tidd on01372 723 206, www.downsmen.co.uk

  • UK fire statistics show that each year onaverage over 30 thousands houseshave chimney fires. This will be largelydue to not getting the chimney sweptoften enough or burning fuel that isinappropriate for the appliance andcausing tar to build up in the chimney. Most insurance companies will nolonger pay out for claims made due tochimney fires unless the chimney hasbeen swept by a professional chimneysweep and a valid certificate of sweepingissued that is recognised by insur-ance companies. Ifthe fire brigade iscalled out to a chimney fire and it isproven that the chimney has not beenproperly maintained, then the localcouncil can bill you for the call out, which can be expensive!Chimney fires can not only destroyhomes but also endanger the occupiersof the dwelling. Slow-burning chimney fires don't getenough air or have enough fuel to beas dramatic or visible as their morespectacular cousins. The temperaturesthey reach are very high and cancause damage to the chimney structure and nearby combustible partsof the house. Use only recommendedfuels for your appliance and flue type (ifyou are unsure check your manufactures instructions, ask yourstove supplier, or a NACS ChimneySweep).

Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustiongases. Regular sweeping will removesoot, bird nests, cobwebs and any otherblockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerouschimney fires. Chimney Sweeping willalso help to increase the efficiency ofappliances. The frequency of ChimneySweeping will depend on a number of factors which include the type of fuel

used, appliance, duration of use, moisturecontent of wood fuel, and the type of chimneyyou have. Your localNACS Chimney Sweep

will be able to advise on the sweepingfrequency during the appointment. Thesweeping frequencies below are forguidance purposes only:- Smokeless Fuel: At least once a

year Wood: Quarterly when in use Bituminous Coal: Quarterly

when in use Oil: Once per year Gas: Once per year

Part 2 follows in October and explainswhat to consider whenchoosing a chimneysweep. Go to www.nacs.org.ukfor further information.

Everyone needs to bestrong but that doesnot mean you aregoing to be big.

Male and females aredifferent so dont get worried about looking like

something youre not. Yes having largemuscles are not for everyone, havinglarge muscles does not always meanyou are stronger.

Hypertrophy is the enlargement of anorgan or tissue from the increase in sizeof its cells. This is the word used for putting on muscle.

Your need to increase the volume ofwork for hypertrophy to happen andchange the movements you do. Itneeds to be in a controlled way andyou should be feelingtension in the area. The exercise shouldnot take too long andthere should be morerest time in betweensets of the exercise.

When training try to concentrate onan area or two, doing a body part splitworks really well. This could be done bydoing just your arms; for that day oftraining, which would be biceps and triceps exercises. We dont want to everover do it when training for size, so neverfeel you have only managed half a repetition of something. This means youhave probably done to much. Every setneeds to be hard, very hard in fact. Thisway you will reach your potential.

Dont just think about that one areayou wish to increase, its about trainingall over your body, its all linked. Basicmovements for a main area will work

others hard as well. You'll see maximumbenefits when you do give all musclegroups equal attention through out yourweekly routine.

To add quality muscle weight to yourbody, you need to have more caloriesthan normal. These are not just anycalories, so forget biscuits, coke andbread rolls as they wont help. You needprotein; you need enough to help yousupport the growth of bigger muscles.Make sure that you're eating clean andhealthy, and you are not eating toomuch. Drinking water and lots of it is thekey to success! Your body needs agood amount of water to help buildmuscle.

Rest. Rest. REST! Ifyou are not takingtime to rest, how willyour body be able torecover? You needto est the musclesyou have used from training hard, so theyare able to rebuildand come backeven stronger. You

shouldnt be training for longer than 45minutes to an 1-hour at max. If you workhard throughout the 45 minutes thereshould be know need to carry on.Remember not to over train, which forsome people is difficult because itbecomes a quick fix and addictive.Over exercising or over training is thesame as over working, everyone needsrest at times! The trick is to get plenty ofsleep at night, eat well and then youcan train correctly.

Ipads and Tablets have become verypopular over the last couple of yearsand the very interesting aspect ofthem is that many people are notaware of the microphone dictatingfacility they hold. For non-typists outthere, it is an absolute saviour. Whenyour in email simply press the microphone symbol speak, it will listenAND translate every word you say. Weused to have something called DragonNaturally speaking for the PC well forget that, use the inbuilt facility forfree!

One client asked recently Do I havea Spanish keyboard that I can use formy Spanish homework? I learnt something that day. By going to keyboards in settings and then generalyou can create a new keyboard for anylanguage and then use the world

symbol to switchbetween the two ormore keyboards amazing!

Taking Photos withyour ipad and sendingthem to people is somuch easier than attaching or usingdrop box and so quick. Downloadingyour pictures from your camera to youripad is also quick and easy with a wonderful little accessory called Appleipad Camera Connectionkit currently retailing at 25on their site.
