Chapter 9- Cellular RespirationCellular respiration → Cell respiration is the process that releases energy by breaking

down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen X

Cell respiration equation: 602 + C6H12O6 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + 36 ATP (energy) oxygen + sugar → carbon dioxide + water + energy

Energy in food → There is energy in food. Food energy is expressed in calories.

Steps in cellular 1) glycolysis respiration → 2) Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle)

3) electron transport chain

Glycolysis → One glucose is broken down into two pyruvic acid molecules and two molecules of ATP energy

Occurs in the cytoplasm of cell

Krebs cycle (citric acid The pyruvic acid made in glycolysis is broken down into CO2 and cycle) → high energy electrons

X Occurs in the mitochondria

Electron transport chain → High energy electrons from the Krebs cycle convert ADP into ATP Occurs in the inner membrane of the mitochondria

ATP made in cellular Energy released in the three step process of cell respiration is respiration → used to make 36 ATP in the presence of oxygen (it is an

aerobic process) but some ATP can be made without oxygen as well

Fermentation → If there is no oxygen present in the environment cell respiration cannot occur. Instead fermentation occurs (an anaerobic process)

2 anaerobic steps to release

1) glycolysis- glucose is broken down into pyruvic acid and ATP energy → (same as cellular respiration)

2) fermentation- lactic acid fermentation and alcoholic fermentation

Lactic acid fermentation →

Pyruvic acid is broken down into lactic acid Usually occurs in your muscles when exercising because your

body X cannot supply your muscles with a sufficient supply of oxygen Build up of lactic acid causes pain and burning This type of fermentation produces cheese, yogurt, and sour

creamAlcoholic fermentation → Pyruvic acid is broken down into alcohol and CO2

Alcoholic fermentation is used to make dough rise (with yeast), the alcohol is killed when it is cooked. It is also used to make

alcoholic beverages like wine and beer
