Celebrating Smokey Bear’s 70th Birthday TWIN FALLS, ID... To celebrate Smokey Bear’s Birthday the Sawtooth National Forest will host Rudy Wendelin’s collec- tion of Smokey Bear Por- traits. The Portraits will be displayed at the Sawtooth Supervisors Office, Minido- ka Ranger District, Fairfield Ranger District, Ketchum Ranger District, Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters and the Red- fish Visitor Center during regular office hours. The “Smokey Bear through the Eyes of Rudy Wendelin Gallery” was made available through the National Agricultural Library Special Collec- tions in Maryland, and the Sawtooth display is one of many locations through- out the United States that will display the exhibit this summer. Rudy Wendelin worked for the US Forest Service from 1949-1973 and took the approach to “soften and humanize” the appearance of Smokey Bear to gain the attention of children. This method was very successful in helping spread the fire education message “Only You Can Prevent Wildfires” and continues to this day. “This is a great opportu- nity for everyone to view some wonderful artwork on behalf of one of our most treasured icons,” says Mon- te Williams, Acting Forest Supervisor.
