Fáilte go Féile na Bealtaine 2016, féile a thugann guth do spiorad na leithinse! Féile is going from strength to strength! Tar éis Gradham Chomhphobail Chiarraí a bhuachaint an bhliain seo chaite, bhí Féile na Bealtaine roghnaithe don Tionscadal Tosta i mbliana. The European Capital of Culture, Donastia/San Sebastian, has selected Féile na Bealtaine as its outpost in Ireland this year. If you’ve been to arts festivals elsewhere you’ll know why Féile na Bealtaine was chosen! We benefit from mass participation rarely seen in the world of the arts. The whole community gets stuck in, an awful lot of people give generously, and an awful lot of people (often the same ones) benefit from it.

Mórbuíochas don mórshúíl dos na daltaí.& múinteoirí scoileanna na leithinise, chomh maith le Trish Thomson, John Holden, Janet Johnston, Orla Breslin, Annette Llowarch, Sadie Moriarty, Michéal O Cinnéide, Tricia Moriarty, Caroline O’Connor, Jenny Prahin, Alan Smith, Marion & Seamus Walsh, Annie Dunneback, Brian Coles, Ruth Carbery, Neasa Murphy Juli Malone, Dingle Fife & Drum Band, Splanc Carnival Band agus DJ Nat. The powerful voice behind Rudimentals brilliant track We The Generation. Signed to Asylum Records (Ed Sheeran, Rudimental and Charli XCX) and aged only 17. Already turning heads this year, not least by her star appearance at Other Voices reminiscent of the star quality of young Amy Winehouse. An incredible musician in her own right, she's been hosting her own "Mahalia Presents .." nights in Leicester over the past few years. This year sees her take centre stage with her own EP and is currently working on her debut album with producers 1985 (Drake, Nicki Minaj), Supa Dups (Bruno Mars, Mary J Blige) and Steve Fitzmaurice (Sam Smith, Aloe Blacc) amongst others.

As Leicester do Mahalia atá ar dhuine de na hamhránaithe is úire atá tágtha chun cinn i saol an cheoil le déanaí agus glór láidir álainn aici. Tá Mahalia tiomanta le dul chun cinn a dhéanamh ina seánra féin; lena guth binn órga agus cur chuige nuálach, tugann sí beocht úr dá cuid amhrán. Tagann Mahalia go dtí an Daingean chun a 18ú breithlá a cheiliuradh.

Based in Dublin Le Galaxie have spent the past five years claiming their title as one of Ireland’s best live bands. Festival and dancefloor favourites, the four-piece electronic group have an exponentially growing fanbase behind them and their songwriting and performance chops promising an even better future in front of them. Le Galaxie finished 2015 with a sold out Irish tour, a packed crowd at the debut Metropolis festival, and a sell out performance on Stephen’s Green for New Year’s Eve. Their most recent release, Le Club (Universal Music Ireland), which boasts hits such as “Love System” and “Put The Chain On”, earned them a well-deserved 2016 Choice Music Prize nomination for Album of the Year. Le Galaxie have spent the early half of 2016 working on new music before bringing their dancefloor anthems and infectiously fun atmosphere around European festivals this summer.

Triur draíochtúil. Three powerful forces in Irish roots music, Noelie McDonnell, Nicola Joyce and Noriana Kennedy combine as The Whileaways to create a beguiling tapestry of harmonies, tradition and beautifully crafted original songs. Using American folksong as a starting point, all three write and sing, drawing on their own experience, with captivating results. Chuir an banna aithne ar a chéile i meascán saibir ceoltoirí cathair na Gaillimhe. Their recent highly acclaimed album 'Saltwater Kisses' received four stars in The Irish Times and RTE Radio 1 Album of the week. Prepare to be spellbound

Tháinig Saint Sister le chéile i mí na Samhna annuraidh agus tá siad ag meascadh traidisiún na gclairseach le seánra an folk agus seánra pop leictronach lena chéile ó shin ina slí speisialta féin, ní bhféadfaí aon rud eile a thabhairt air ach “atmosfolk”

Saint Sister, formed in November 2014, is the new project from Morgan MacIntyre and Gemma Doherty. Their music draws from early Celtic harp traditions, '60s folk and electronic pop to create ‘atmosfolk'—a mix of soulful vocal harmonies, dreamy synth and electro-acoustic harp. Following their debut performance on Irish television, they opened for Arcade Fire’s Will Butler in Whelan’s. April saw them support San Fermin, and tour Ireland with Dublin band Spies. In August, the band entered the studio for the first time to record their debut EP with Alex Ryan (bassist with Hozier), which was released on November 13th on Trout Records.

The Voice is everything for the folk singer – a conduit for the words, the emotion, the thought process. And if you ever felt a record needed to be made of an artist’s voice, about her voice, so beautifully focused on, centred on, honed-in, on and in love with the voice, then this, is the record. Brendan Begley and Mike Hanrahan have created a show, which tells a story of Ireland’s 1916 rising through songs, music, poetry and stories of the era spanning 1890 to 1916.

Ní stairithe, éinne againe ach beirt ceoltoirí, amhránaithe agus scribhnóirí a chuir suim sa tréimhse seo dá’r stair agus go bhfuil leabharlann bheag léighte againn i dtaobh na bhfearaibh is na mná fé leith seo, alán acu scríbhnóirí, ceoltóirí, amhránaithe, rínceóirí, ealaiontóirí, filí, agus go háirithe dream go raibh fís acu. We find songs so familiar to generations of Irish people and shine an extra light on their significance. Songs such as Oro se de Bheatha abhaile, The Tri coloured Ribbon, A Nation once again, James Connolly and A Soldiers Song which would eventually be translated to Irish and become our National Anthem. Bhí Éirinn ag an am, ina tír go raibh suim as an nua á chur sa Ghaeilge, sa cheol, amhránaiocht, ealaion, stair agus béaloideas aici ,agus ímpireacht na Breatainne brúite anuas go daingean uirti agus ina coinne. I gCáisc na blaina 1916, bhí Baile Átha Cliath trí thine, tine fonn na saoirse, scrios, mallaitheacht, gumh, pian agus mortas cine.

Maureen Freely On Being Orhan's DoubleDingle Courthouse Luan/Monday 2pm €5The Turkish Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk has written beautifully about the perils of imagining oneself into someone else's mind. But as his translator, it was Maureen Freely's job to do just that. This difficult business was further complicated when Orhan Pamuk was prosecuted for insulting Turkishness, and his translator took it upon herself to campaign on his behalf in the western

media. What effect did all this have on their relationship, and their writing? Maureen Freely is an author, a journalist, a translator, and the Head of the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick. She is perhaps best known as the translator of five books the Turkish Nobel Laureate Orhan Pamuk. Her own seventh novel, Sailing through Byzantium, was named as one of the best novels of 2013 in both the TLS and the Sunday Times. A fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and formerly chair of the Translators Association, she is currently the President of English PEN.
