But let’s start from the beginning, when Priscilla was born in 1935 near Liverpool, England. Liverpool was “blitzed” in 1940 during WWII, causing her two-year evacuation to a small town in Wales, called Dee Valley. There, she was safe and could attend school. Her routine was quite daunting for a child of five and six, as she walked to the train station, caught the train and accomplished this round trip, all alone. Returning home to the Liverpool suburbs, she attended a weekly boarding school. In 1947, she spent the next few years at Castleton School, a full-time boarding school in the Lake District known in the novel Jane Eyre as Lowood. The rolling countryside was beautiful and she loved it. From 1953-57, she attended the University of Liverpool where her father was also a professor. Graduating first in her class, Priscilla was invited by Sheffield University to participate in their PhD program. The thesis work focused on the Arizona Desert Rat, which brought some chuckles. But it was serious enough to grant her a Fulbright Scholarship for one year to Rutgers University in New Jersey. Two years later she completed her thesis at Sheffield, and in 1961 married T. Bliss Winn. Priscilla and her American husband then moved to Germany, where he was stationed with the U.S. Army. After returning to the States and Richmond, VA, she taught Physiology at the Medical College of Virginia and at the University of Pittsburgh. From 1965-70 she stayed home with her young daughters, Pippa and Nikki. Then in the 1970’s, Priscilla taught both at the Wheeler School in Providence, RI and also was its Head of Upper School. From 1978-92 she held similar posts concurrently at Milton Academy, near Boston. Sadly, her first husband died during this period. Later, she and her second husband, Tony Barlow, spent almost five years in Toronto, Canada where she was principal of Havergal College. After that, she worked at Manhattan’s Brearley School for six years as Head of School, where she relished New York’s vibrancy and culture. A second-time widow, Priscilla worked in 2003 as Development Director of a large search firm. Interestingly, in 2011, she was brought back to Brearley School for a one-year “administrative tune-up.” Today, Priscilla revels in the time she spends with her two daughters and four grandchildren; families located in Raleigh and Australia. Above all, Priscilla loves people. Smiling broadly, she exclaimed, “I’m a ‘People Person.'” Most definitely—a Fascinating People Person! Priscilla Winn: A Fascinating People Personby Jean Wolff

You might find her in a vigorous game of golf croquet or bocce, or walking through Meadowmont Village, or in the midst of a book discussion. Priscilla Winn has been an active Cedars Member since her arrival in 2012 and presently serves as Vice-Chair of the Members Council.

But let’s start from the beginning, when Priscilla was born in 1935 near Liverpool, England. Liverpool was “blitzed” in 1940 during WWII, causing her two-year evacuation to a small town in Wales, called Dee Valley. There, she was safe and could attend school. Classical MythologyTaught by Professor Elizabeth Vandiver Ph.D., Associate Professor of Classics and Clement Biddle Penrose Professor of Latin at Whitman College (lectures on DVD)Thursdays, August 6–September 10, 11am Ballroom

From Athena to Zeus, the characters and stories of classical mythology have been both unforgettable and profoundly influential. They have inspired and shaped everything from great art and literature, to our notions of sexuality and gender roles, to the themes of popular films and TV shows.

Classical Mythology is an introduction to the primary characters and most important stories of classical Greek and Roman mythology. Among those you will study are the accounts of the creation of the world in Hesiod’s Theogony and Ovid’s Metamorphoses; the gods Zeus, Apollo, Demeter, Persephone, Hermes, Dionysos, and Aphrodite; the Greek Heroes, Theseus and Heracles (Hercules in the Roman version); and the most famous of all classical myths, the Trojan War.

Benefits of Ballroom DancingBallroom dancing isn’t just a fun activity; it boasts benefits including cardiovascular conditioning, strengthening of the muscular system and positive effects on your mental health. Frequent dancing can offer protection against dementia by improving cognitive reserve. While learning dance patterns, the brain constantly rewires its neural pathways, as needed.

Six members of the Cedars Ballroom Dance Group recently enjoyed an outing at the Pittsboro Road House in downtown Pittsboro. Our instructor Bruce Gillooly had told us about the First Monday Nights there. For a mere $5 cover charge, we enjoyed the music of the NC Revelers, a 17–piece orchestra playing favorites from the big band era. After a light dinner, we ventured out on the dance floor—first dancing to old favorite beach music but then branching out to enjoy fox-trot, swing, rhumba and even one waltz. We are looking for more Members to join the group and enjoy the benefits of ballroom dancing. The next “big band” night is Monday, August 3. For more information, contact Betty White at 919-967-4064.

Introductory Classes to Be Offered in AugustDuring the month of August, 30-minute introductory sessions of Cedars “specialty” classes will be held so that Members who haven’t tried them can learn the basics of each class. There are no sign-ups or charges for these classes; just join your friends in the Ballroom to see what all the fun is about!
