These youngsters at the Henderson Family YMCA, shown in the photo at left above, are on the move, twisting and turning and getting some serious exercise as a part of the Y’s after-school program. The girls in the photo at right were on the move in another way — climbing to the top of the Babe Ruth World Series and bringing a championship trophy home to Henderson.
It’s not just a game.It may appear as elementary as
putting a bat on a ball or swimming faster than the kid in the other lane. Ac-cording to most area leaders in athletics, sports and physical activity can have a more impacting and long-lasting effect on youth in Vance County than just winning a game or defeating an oppo-nent.
The positives that accompany par-ticipating in athletic activities can begin at young ages, with an array of sporting options in the area provided by organiza-
tions like the YMCA, the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Depart-ment, area Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) squads and local schools.
For Woody Caudle, executive director of the Henderson YMCA, keeping children active leads to “improving the quality of life” in the community.
“Our whole purpose is to be active and to keep them doing something all
the time,” said Caudle. “Certainly, the main driver today is the obesity crisis (and how it’s affecting young people).”
Henderson’s Y opened in 1990 with the provision of youth sports and swim-ming lessons serving as the primary goal of the facility.
Caudle said that now about 500 kids ages 3-12 participate in sports like basketball, soccer, tee ball and volleyball. The Y also offers a children’s aerobic exercise program after school.
Around 130 children participate in the after-school program with the same

Jason Brown returned home again this spring to show his appreciation to community volunteers as a sponsor for Henderson-Vance Spring Litter Sweep Clean-Up Day hosted by the local appearance commis-sions.
NFL star and the St. Louis Rams’ reigning Man of the Year, the Henderson native distributed T-shirts to volunteers. His foundation, Wisdom of Life Ministry, paid for a luncheon for vol-unteers and gave cash awards to those who collected the most debris.
Brown received the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award from the Rams in 2010 for his community service as well as his on-the-field performance.
His passion for com-munity service was evident when the Rams signed him in 2009. In addition to his own foundation, Brown volunteered his time in the St. Louis community and became the honorary spokesperson for a program designed to combat the dropout rate. He partici-
pated in numerous Rams’ community activities.
His greatest passion, however, is military and veteran outreach. Brown has a personal connection to the military as his brother, Lunsford Bernard Brown II, was killed while serving in Iraq in September 2003.
The son of Bernard and Deborah Brown of Vance County, Jason was a stand-out lineman and track and field athlete at Northern Vance High School and played for the University of

number scheduled to take part in the upcoming sum-mer program that features arts
and crafts as well as bowling field trips and a visit to the Triangle to watch the Durham Bulls play.
“Of course I’m biased, but I think the Y offers a lot to the community,” Caudle said. “There’s a reason why we have ‘family’ in our name, Henderson Family YMCA. We want to encourage families to be involved.”
There may not have been a better representative for the community than the 2010 Henderson/Vance Babe Ruth World Series champions. The 16-under
All-Stars’ national championship in Virginia last summer helped to show how far girls’ sports and the Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks Depart-
ment’s programs have come.
“When softball started 20 years ago with just a couple of teams, nobody thought we could have gone that far,” said Recre-ation and Parks Director Alan Gill.
Youth sports at the Rec Department are open to ages as young as 5. Gill said the overarching
objective is for children to learn new sports, develop those sports’ skills and, most importantly, have fun.
“If they’re not having fun, they won’t participate very long,” he said.
The Rec Department also offers Vance Aquatics, a swim team, as well as the Henderson Rec Players, a commu-nity theater program.

ball team in the state.Playing year-round,
Brodie’s program gives him the ability to develop more than just a coach-player relationship with his athletes.
“To me, I see a great need to help families
around here,” Brodie said. “It’s a year-round program, so it’s not just in a foot-ball season. You can actually monitor their progress.”
Brodie uses football as a recruit-ing tool for his other passion, the Boy Scouts.
“Th ey see (youth playing) football, but they don’t see (themselves participat-ing in) scouting,” said Brodie, the Troop 620 scout leader.
“Gradually, as time goes by, they fl ip into scouting and do both.”
Brodie isn’t stopping there. He’s in the early phases of getting a corporation seal for North Carolina Youth Develop-ment, an organization designed for ages 6-18 that would combine scouting and AAU sports as well as off er tutoring and mentoring programs.
“It gives the kids some sort of struc-
ture,” said Brodie. “It kind of takes their minds off some other negative things going on around them.”
One of the highest levels in the area for youth to compete in athletics comes in high school.
Even there, the ultimate goal isn’t always winning.

The P&G Pet Care plant at its 90-acre site on Com-
merce Drive in Henderson occupies a growth niche in Procter & Gamble’s production of Iams and Eukanuba premium pet food brands.
So as P&G Henderson leaps into its 20th year, and the September anni-versary celebrations near, expectations are high for future growth and a stable role through the next 20 years.
The celebration at P&G promises to be a milestone for em-ployees, their families and specially invited guests to enjoy, said Human Resources Manager Thomas Hampton.
“We’re going to have games and entertainment geared for small children, and more for youth and adults,” Hamp-ton said. “It’s an event for food, games and entertainment. We are also extending formal invitations for special guests and other dignitaries.”
The focus on the 20-year landmark will be an opportunity to look back on other milestones for P&G Henderson.
It took 18 months from breaking ground to production, with original construction starting in March 1990 and operations starting on Sept. 10, 1991.
The plant was an Iams owned and operated facility at that time, and it boasted a modest 250,000 square feet. In 1995, Iams expanded the plant to 450,000 square feet.
Procter & Gamble acquired the Iams Company in 1999, and all signs pointed to further growth.
In 2000, P&G Pet Care sprung for an additional 72,000-square-foot structure built on site and P&G would operate on a full 24/7 schedule.
At full capacity, P&G Henderson em-ploys 150, drawing its quality workers
from Vance, Granville, Warren, Franklin and Wake counties as a top regional employer offering competitive wages and generous benefits that include medical and profit sharing.
P&G’s products from Henderson go out to the nation and internationally to Australia, Japan and Eastern Europe.
Hampton said that the plant is well-placed both geographically and demo-graphically for a strong future.
“We are in a very strategic location for the company,” Hampton said. “The brands as well are focus brands for growth in the company, so we do have an expectation for future growth.”
A typical year’s impact on the local and surrounding economy is for P&G to put out more than $40 million in employee compensation, contractor services, raw materials, packaging and office supplies.
The plant and its employees con-
tribute to the United Way and local charities, includ-ing area animal welfare programs, totaling about $40,000 yearly.
P&G Henderson draws from a 60-year tradition that Paul F. Iams initiated
with his vision for innovation and advanced nutrition that would lead to premium quality, to surpass other pet foods.
Iams claimed a different approach to pet food — a nutritional difference based on research, dedication to pet health, plus a differ-ent, innovative way of thinking about the dietary requirements and behaviors of dogs and cats.
Iams’ points: consider feeding cats and dogs as carni-vores, tailor formulas by life stage and develop formulas to meet common needs of pets and their owners, such as cat food for multi-cat
households.His breakthrough approach resulted
in a legacy of valuing advanced nutrition and belief in the right diet to do amaz-ing things for pets — boost immunity, help burn fat, help maintain muscle and promote healthy digestion, aid in weight loss, reduce tartar build-up, and, in some instances, even nutritionally manage the progression of disease.
“The brand’s most distinguishing element is nutritional superiority, with quality ingredients that help deliver a quality end product,” a national P&G statement said.
“Iams has led our industry with a number of nutritional firsts, including advances like tailored nutrition and foods designed for smarter, more train-able puppies. Through superior nutri-tion, Iams helps unleash pets’ potential, giving them more years of healthier living.”

Southern Vance High School Athletic Director Ed Wilson insists, “there’s a lot more to coaching than teaching just X’s and O’s.”
According to Wilson, coaches often serve as “psychologists and social workers” and, at South-ern, keeping students eligible to play is a major focus.
“Our biggest role is trying to keep kids’ grades up,” said Wilson.
“Obviously, they can’t play unless they are eligible. I think it’s a great moti-vator. A lot of kids stay in school because of sports.”
A representative from the National Collegiate Scouting Association recently spoke to a group of Raider athletes, preaching the importance of sports and their ability to develop discipline and teach teamwork.
Th e representative said many busi-nesses look to hire athletes because of those qualities.
Wilson said he spends a lot of time convincing students that playing at an NCAA Division I school isn’t the only route to take. Opportunities can also be found on the Division II, III or commu-nity college levels.
Th e NCSA spokesperson also told Wilson that an average-size school has done “good” to produce one Division I athlete a year.
Southern already has at least one for 2010-2011: Hakim Jones, who signed to play football at N.C. State.
At Northern Vance High School, Athletic Director David Hicks is also looking outside of the lines.
“It still provides a great opportunity for them to participate in interscholastic sports. For me, it’s always been
about representing your school and your community,” said Hicks.
Hicks, also a soccer coach, said he and other coaches start their recruiting

A big hit at Maria Parham Medical Center has got-
ten even bigger.MPMC’s new
Oncology Center is now four-times larger, and — as the center has grown — cancer care has expanded, too.
Maria Parham has been providing treat-ment to cancer patients for over 20 years, offer-ing the highest quality cancer care and healthy doses of compassion.
The new center steps up that treatment with a facility measuring nearly 6,000 square feet, providing space for up to 14 patients to receive chemotherapy at one time. There are also five examination rooms and a large triage room.
The treatment area also shares a 67-foot glass wall with the cen-ter’s new outdoor garden, accessible from the treatment area and featuring a color-ful assortment of flowers and shrubbery. The garden, recently named the Leslie Riggins Carswell Memorial Garden, has natural light coming from outside and provides a tranquil setting for patients receiving chemotherapy.
Patients also have access to large-screen televisions with personal head-phones.
“The new unit offers patients more privacy and it also offers the staff more space to function,” said Bob Singletary, president and CEO of the hospital.
“It will allow us to expand the staff in the oncology unit.”
Medical and radiation oncology are offered at the unit, along with counseling and nutrition services.
The Maria Parham Oncology Center partners with Duke Medicine to provide the best possible care for cancer patients.
“Our team offers a range of services that blend state-of-the-art technology for diagnosis and treatment with compas-sionate and knowledgeable care,” said Jay Kennedy, vice president of operations. “One of the biggest advantages of the Maria Parham/Duke partnership is the ability to provide world-class research, technology and care to patients in our community.”
Medical oncology and radiation on-cology are both offered along with related services such as counseling and nutrition.
A family atmosphere fills the center as the staff interacts with patients.
“We become close to our patients,” said Fred Buzzell, RN, acting head of the center.
“We laugh with them and cry with them — we take their journey with them.”
“They get to know others they see receiving treatment and, as a result, they build their own support network,”
Buzzell said. “We try to make it easier to talk about cancer by using humor.”
Nurses feed on the personal relationships they have with their patients, he observed. “They give us the strength and desire to do what we do,” Buzzell said.
The new unit also includes a Cancer Resource Center, a joint effort of The American Cancer Society and Maria Parham, which can educate patients and families on any particular ailment, helping them to better understand a disease and treatment. A social worker is available along with a registered dieti-cian.
A conference room and a library are also included in the unit. These additions provide a suitable meet-ing place for the local Tumor Board and the staff of the unit. The new unit also includes a large waiting room for patients and their families.
To add to the attractiveness of the facility, the walls of the new Oncology Center are decorated with art from local artists.
Volunteer/Guest Services can be found bringing around a hospitality cart with baked cookies provided by the Dietary Department for patients and visitors.
There’s much hope for cancer patients. Experts say more than half of today’s cancer patients will be cured.
“New treatments are emerging, as are better ways to reduce chemotherapy and radiation therapy side effects,” said Kennedy.
Maria Parham Medical Center is ready — in a big way — to help with the journey.
Cancer Care
The new Oncology Center, unveiled at an open house in December, includes a 67-foot glass wall that provides patients with a view of an outdoor garden that is accessible from the treatment area and is filled with flowers and shrubbery. The garden was recently named the Leslie Riggins Carswell Memorial Garden.

Of all the major lakes in North Carolina, Kerr Lake (known to some as Buggs Island Lake)
is in my opinion the most scenic and beautiful.
Due primarily to limitations on shoreline construction (the U.S. Corps of Engineers owns over 70 percent of the shoreline and manages this in its natural state) along with its distance from a major metropolitan area (Raleigh, over 40 miles away), most of the lake looks the same today as it did over 40 years ago when I was a little boy. There is very little boat traffic congestion, except for during a brief time around the Fourth of July. Even
then there are plenty of places where you can get away from the crowds if you don’t mind driving your boat a short distance.
During the winter there are hardly any boats on the water except for a few hardy fishermen out for a day of striped bass or blue catfish fishing. Stripers up to 20 pounds and blue cats over 50 are possible catches on any given day. You are likely to see bald eagles, otter and deer swimming across the lake or at the water’s edge, turkeys taking flight across a cove as you fish close by, and a variety of turtles. There is even the occasional report of a migrating black bear pass-ing through the area while relocating
“The Big One” aptly refers to Kerr Lake — whether you are speaking of the enormous size of the lake itself or the size of the fish you can pull from its waters, such as this four-pound largemouth bass reeled in by local columnist Walt Bowen. In the background is Nutbush Bridge, also called Neathery’s Bridge. Enthusiasts would want to know the fish was caught on a Number 6 Fat Free Shad.
Another beautiful sunset on Kerr Lake.

between the mountains and the coastal plain.
I have enjoyed fishing and other water sports on Kerr Lake nearly all of my life, beginning 40 years ago with my granddaddy, Cutter Robertson. My child-hood dream was to ride my motor bike around the entire lake — with its more than 850 miles of shoreline covering nearly 50,000 acres. I never did get around to doing that, but I have pulled my boat up on many a sandy beach to have a picnic or hot dog cookout.
Some might say that the fishing is not quite as good today as it was 40 years ago. This may be true in some respects. However, there are still opportunities to catch a trophy largemouth bass or giant striper. The North Carolina state records for white bass (almost 6 pounds) and freshwater drum (22 pounds) are both held by anglers fishing on Kerr Lake within the last two decades. I wouldn’t be the least surprised to see a state record crappie landed from Kerr Lake at some point in the near future.
Kerr Lake is one of the few lakes in the country where striped bass reproduce naturally after being trapped behind the dam when it closed in the early
1950’s. These saltwater fish typically migrate from the open ocean up fresh water rivers during their annual spawn-ing runs. Today the John H. Kerr Dam blocks their return to the Atlantic, so they spend the year roaming the lake in large schools. Hooking and landing one of these brutes is an experience that will stay in your memory for a lifetime, just as the 24 pounder I caught while fishing alone at the age of 13 has stuck in mine. I’ve seen them caught on everything from crankbaits to hot dog wieners.
Kerr Lake has been ranked one of the top 10 bass fishing destinations in the nation as recently as 10 years ago by Bassmaster magazine. Bass tournament opportunities exist for everyone from
the novice angler all the way to the top expert anglers in the country. From small bass clubs that hold one day derbies for groups of 20 boats or less to Bassmaster sponsored events pitting hundreds of anglers against each other in multi-day events, you can usually find a competi-tion of some type launching every week-end between February and November.
So take your children camping and spend the days fishing at beautiful Kerr Lake. You’ll see everything from pup tents to expensive motor homes, and you too can make memories that last a lifetime.
— WALT [email protected]
There’s no cooler spot to be on a hot-as-a-firecracker Fourth of July! Kerr Lake offers swimming, boating, camping, fishing, sailing and — as a special holiday treat — fireworks for Independence Day.
Walt Bowen, a columnist for The Daily Dispatch, was born in Henderson in 1959 and raised on a farm in nearby Epsom. He completed his basic education in the Vance County Public Schools and went on to complete his bachelor of science degree in Computer Science at the University of North Caro-lina at Wilmington.
In addition to success-fully raising a family of three children with his wife of nearly 30 years, Susan Davis Barnett Bowen of Henderson, he has launched a successful career as an information technol-
ogy executive with worldwide responsibilities for computer systems at a Fortune 500 corporation.
Walt has also spent nearly all his spare time over the past 15 years pursuing a hobby that has become a second career.
Bass fishing — in particu-larly tournament bass fishing, in events at all but the highest levels of the sport — has grown from a pastime enjoyed with his son Jimmie into a part time job with extensions into outdoor writing and a weekly fishing report in the Dispatch.
Walt has developed his skills
in the sport of bass fishing to levels needed to place consis-tently in the money in nearly two thirds of the events he en-ters, with frequent top finishes and occasional wins.
Examples are: 2010 Fishers of Men at Kerr Lake – 1st place with Vern Fleming; 2010 Bassmaster Weekend Series 2 day Divisional event at Kerr Lake – 14th place; 2010 Mid Atlantic – Falls Lake – won a team tournament alone by a large margin; 2009 Novem-ber American Bass Anglers at Kerr – 1st; 2009 BFL at Lake Gaston – 14th; 2006 Fishers
of Men at Lake Gaston – 3rd with son Jimmie; 2002 Caro-linian Bass Anglers 2 day Clas-sic at Hyco Lake – 1st; and 2000 Fishers of Men at Kerr Lake with wife Susan – 1st.
Now residing in Walnut Cove, Walt and Susan feel extremely fortunate to have a small cabin on the shores of Kerr Lake. His long term goals include winning a top tier bass tournament and making a living in the sport of bass fishing through a combination of tournament winnings, writ-ing earnings and product sales earnings.

Added Hicks: “I’ve often said a lot of kids need to be on teams more than some of the teams need the kids.”

Another dozen Vance County Public Schools teachers added their names to the growing list of teachers across North Carolina and the nation who have received National Board Certifi cation. Th is year’s group is the largest ever to receive the certifi ca-tion at one time.
Th e certifi cations are recognized at the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Com-merce’s annual banquet along with the awards given to the Teacher of the Year and the Principal of the Year in the Vance County Public Schools and the Shining Moment Award for volunteer-ism.
Jacqueline Boyd of Southern Vance High School won the teacher award and Carolyn Harris of New Hope Elemen-tary took the principal honor this year. Th e Townsville Lions Club was honored
for volunteerism. An advanced teaching credential, the
certifi cation is designed to complement, but not replace, a state teacher license. Valid for 10 years, the certifi cation is achieved upon the successful completion of a voluntary assessment program.
“Th e program is designed to recog-
nize eff ective and accomplished teachers who meet high stan-dards based on what teachers should know and be able to do,” said Jimmy Minichello, media relations director of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Th e certifi -cation is available nationwide for most pre-K through 12th grade teachers and counselors.
“Every child deserves an ac-complished teacher — one who is qualifi ed to equip students with the skills to succeed in the 21st century global community,” Minichello said. “NBPTS Stan-
dards and National Board Certifi cation give teachers and schools the tools to defi ne and measure teaching excellence.”
Th e new nationally certifi ed educa-tors include: Barbara Currin, Lucy Lan-den and Jenny Waite, all of Zeb Vance

“National certifi cation for educators is an important recognition,” said Dr. Norman Shearin, who recently retired as superintendent of Vance County Schools. “To obtain the certifi cation,
educators have to complete a lot of work and prove their talents. We’re very proud of the 12 educators in our school system who have most recently obtained this prestigious recognition. We know they will continue to show their outstand-ing talents in the classroom, and our students will benefi t greatly from it.”

LOCAL PHARMACY TRIPLES SPACE WITH
EXPANSION
Filling over one million new pre-scriptions, Chocky White and Medical Arts Pharmacy have become fixtures in Henderson medicine over the past 40 years.
White grew up in Warrenton and attended John Graham High School before going to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy in 1969.
After one year of working with Harris Pharmacy in Louisburg, White moved to Henderson and opened Medical Arts Pharmacy in 1971.
“When I first opened the store, I was the only pharmacist and the only employee,” White said. “I didn’t hire my second employee until several years later.”
Medical Arts Pharmacy now em-ploys four pharmacists — the fourth being hired earlier this year — and 15 technicians.
“We have been mighty fortunate to be in business this long,” White said. “To grow even when the economy is so bad is really a blessing.”
Among White’s employees are son, Brent, a specialist with Durable Medi-cal Equipment, and his daughter, Cara Kirby, a medicine management special-ist. Both have been employees for a little over a year.
“My dad has done a wonderful job making the pharmacy what it is today,” Kirby said. “We are really proud of him.”
Medical Arts Pharmacy filled its one millionth new prescription in Janu-ary, reaching a milestone White never imagined.
“The millionth new prescription has made us so encouraged that we have been able to maintain the business for this long,” White said. “It shows us we are doing something right — to have gained the loyalty of so many custom-ers.”
The pharmacy just wrapped up a new expansion in January, too, expanding its former 1,200 square-foot space into a roomy 3,600 square feet.
“We started out with only 600 square feet. When we were busy, it seemed like people were standing shoulder to shoulder,” White said. “We have been in cramped quarters for over 38 years and the space we have now is much needed and refreshing.”
White has been the sole owner of Medical Arts Pharmacy since it opened, but that may change in the upcoming year.
“One of our current pharmacists, Bill Tippett, is considering buying into the pharmacy,” White said. “He will be a partner soon, which will be good for business because he is very well known

in Henderson.White never regrets choosing Hen-
derson as his home and the foundation for his business.
“Being in a town this size, it has major growth potential but is still small enough where everyone can get to know you,” White said. “In big cities like Ra-leigh and Durham, you can’t get that.”
First Baptist Church is where White and his wife of 42 years, Nettie, spend much of their time.
“We are really involved with the church and it has become a large part of our lives,” he said.
In his free time, White loves to play tennis. He is a member of the Hender-son Country Club.
“I play tennis with lots of people at the country club, since golf has never been my game,” he said. “I have devel-oped great relationships through tennis and wouldn’t trade them for the world.”
White lives, works, worships and plays in Henderson and says he has no plans on going anywhere else.

Th e Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce continued a tradition of recognizing the newly certifi ed teachers and counselors at its annual banquet, awarding them plaques to go along with a monetary gift from the Vance County Public School Foundation.
Th e Teacher of the Year, Boyd, is a 40-year teaching veteran now instructing civics and economics to 10th graders at Southern Vance High School. She has adapted teaching styles to keep up to date with the times, she said.
As Principal of the Year, Harris at New Hope Elementary School is credit-ed with having high expectations for her students and for embracing volunteers for the valuable assistance they provide.
Also at the annual banquet, the Townsville Lions Club received the Shining Moment in Education Award from Vance County Public Schools as the school system’s most outstanding business partner for 2010-2011.

For more than two decades, the Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce has been equipping a
diverse group of local citizens with the tools they need to become informed, dedicated leaders in the community.
Leadership Vance is a five-month pro-gram that seeks to inform, challenge and educate its participants on the opportu-nities and needs of the community.
“The whole philosophy is that these people will make better community lead-ers if they are educated and know about every aspect of Henderson and Vance County,” Rachel Hedrick, Chamber membership director and LV organizer, said.
“Participants strengthen their leader-
ship skills while learning about the social, economic and political dynamics that shape our community.”
A maximum of 25 participants is chosen by a selection committee with participants chosen to represent all back-grounds, occupations and geographic areas of the county.
The response from participants has been impressive over the years.
Jon Dorsey of RBC Bank highly recommends the program: “Leadership Vance is a wonderful way for people new to the area, as well as Henderson natives, to learn more about our community.”
Added KaKeasha Richardson, physi-cian assistant at Henderson Wellness Center, “As a Vance County native,
I was pleasantly surprised to learn so much more about the inner workings of Vance County. This experience has better prepared me for my current and future leadership roles in the community.”
Michael Noble, the director of facili-ties management for Maria Parham Med-ical Center, is not a native of Henderson. “Coming from outside of Vance County, Leadership Vance helped me gain a new and sincere respect for the people and businesses here. I really appreciate the work and commitment that goes into the everyday operations of Vance County and the business community.”

cus on education, government, economic development, law enforcement and the courts, agri-business, health, community resources, history and media.
Leadership Vance participants take tours of various places in community, in-cluding a trip to the bottom of the huge Greystone Quarry. Th ey enjoy industry tours, lunch with area judges and even a visit to the local jail.
Skip Satterwhite, an agent with West-er Insurance, said, “As a lifelong resident of Henderson and Vance County, I was surprised to fi nd out how much I didn’t know about our community.... My exposure to Leadership Vance was a great personal experience and will help me to continue to develop professionally.”
“Being in the community only a few years, I learned a great deal about Hen-derson and Vance County, as well as met a number of wonderful people,” added Gina DeMent, community development specialist for Five County Mental Health Authority.
LV participants establish new relation-ships in the business community and they discover their potential to make a diff erence right here at home, Hedrick said. “Th e intensive training and expo-sure to all aspects of the community pro-vide our participants with the historical background and the skills necessary for volunteer civic and community positions as well as their career goals,” she said.
Each year, the participants have a Community Services Day where they work on a project to fulfi ll a require-ment to spend a day helping to improve their home community. Th e 2010 work session took place at Rebuilding Hope Ministries, a ministry aimed at repairing homes to make them liveable for those who are less fortunate. Other projects have included landscaping projects at the Vance County Senior Center, cleaning up King Daughters Park and freshening up the Vance County Department of Social Services waiting room with bright colored paint and a children’s play area.
Hedrick said the program seeks par-ticipants who may already be emerging as active and engaged citizens and aims to help kick-start them to a new level of activity and participation in their jobs and community.
“In some ways they are already leaders to begin with,” she said.

He’s a product of North Carolina’s community college system. Now he’s a major player in that same
system. He is Dr. Randy Parker, president of
Vance-Granville Community College since 2004. His experiences as a community col-lege student, instructor and administrator give him a valuable perspective on how the four-campus college he leads can serve Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin counties.
Parker understands the College Transfer program: He received an associate’s degree from Lenoir Community College before earning a bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He later went on to earn a master’s degree and an Ed.D. degree at N.C. State University.
Parker understands how the community college responds to the training needs of business and industry: At Lenoir Commu-nity College he moved up through a number of positions from instructor to vice president of instruction and student services.
“We respond to change,” Parker said. “When a company comes to us saying they
need a certain kind of training, we can pro-vide that training.”
Now, after six years as president of VGCC, Parker looked back on some of the accomplishments of that period.
He noted that some of the college’s building projects that were completed during his tenure had begun under the previous administration. These include a new building or an addition at each of the school’s four campuses. VGCC also acquired property across from the Vance County campus for a corporate campus. In Parker’s vision for the future, the corporate campus would be a site to provide training for industries that locate in the Triangle North industrial parks.
Two building priorities set in 2006 have been partially met. Planning for an allied science building at the main campus and a
classroom building at the Franklin campus has been completed. Construction can start when funding becomes available.
VGCC offers a College Transfer program and a variety of two-year educational programs. An additional characteristic that makes it especially valuable to the local com-munities is its responsiveness to the particular needs of local companies and organizations.
The adaptability of the college has al-lowed it to provide training for such diverse companies as ACS State Healthcare, that services Medicaid client accounts throughout the country; Pacific Coast Feather Company, manufacturer of bedding products; foam insulation manufacturer Palziv; and Shalag Nonwovens, whose Granville County plant manufactures disposable wipes, diapers and personal hygiene products.
VGCC also seeks out expanding areas of the job market to provide potential employ-ees with the skills and knowledge they need to qualify. The culinary program, in its fourth year, exemplifies this responsiveness to job

opportunities. A unique feature of this pro-gram is the partnership the college formed with the Masonic Home for Children.
“Th ey had a kitchen they weren’t using. We had a program that needed a kitchen,” Parker said. “Graduates of that program can work in any restaurant up to fi ve stars or start their own business.”
In 2008, VGCC entered the arena of interscholastic sports when it joined the National Junior College Athletic Associa-tion. Th e men’s basketball team reached the Region X semi-fi nals in each of its fi rst two seasons. Th e golf team placed fourth at the Region X championship in 2010. On the fe-male side of the student population, VGCC added women’s volleyball in 2009.
VGCC has joined with the four local public school districts to implement an Early College program in each county. Th e program gives students an opportunity to obtain both a high school diploma and an associate’s degree after completing fi ve years of a combination of high school and college courses. A major goal of the program is to introduce students from families with no history of higher education to the prospect of a college education.
In another innovative collaboration, VGCC formed a consortium with Wake County Technical Institute and Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at UNC-Chapel Hill to off er an associate degree in Global Logistics Technology. Th e program prepares students for careers in distribution, warehousing, transportation and the other components of the supply chain.
In spite of its prominent profi le statewide and nationally, VGCC still prides itself on the work done locally to serve the needs of Vance, Granville, Warren and Franklin counties.

* Prior to 1970, the Henderson-Vance Chamber presented separate Man of the Year and Woman of the Year awards.
While short in stature, Doro-thy Hunt towered above the rest of the audience at the
Henderson-Vance Chamber of Com-merce’s annual membership banquet in February.
Chosen as the 2010 Citizen of the Year, Hunt, at slightly less than five feet tall, accepted her award with praise for the community’s support of her ministry, Lifeline Outreach, a shelter for women and children who are in need.
“I’m probably too choked up to say anything,” Hunt told the capacity crowd at the Vance-Granville Community College Civic Center as she held back tears. “The greatest thing I ever see is the change that is made in these women’s lives.”
In 1984, Hunt founded her minis-try with just $300, a handful of people who wanted to help her, a vision and a healthy dose of faith in God.
“It started as one woman’s dream and became a community project,” Hunt said regarding her shelter. “The plan is just to start where you are and make a difference.”
For more than 40 years, the Chamber has been recognizing individuals like Mrs. Hunt who make a difference in Henderson and Vance County.
From 1970 to 1978, separate awards were given for Man of the Year and Woman of the Year. The award was consolidated in 1979 to recognize the Citizen of the Year.
The public is given the opportunity to nominate honorees. The recipient of the award must be a county resident who is nominated for acts performed outside his or her normal business or profession for the benefit of the county and its citizens. No chamber member-ship is required for this award.
Hunt’s award was presented by James
D. Edwards, the 2009 recipient of the award, who was recognized for his volunteer work with a number of area organizations.
Previous award recipients include, in 2008, Henderson attorney Bennett H. Perry Jr., chosen in large part for more than three decades of service as a trustee of H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library. His leadership and counsel led to the transfer of the library from a private, nonprofit organization to the city and county.
Perry helped orchestrate the move of the library from cramped spaces on Young Street in 1986 to a former food store on Rose Avenue and to making the library a part of the Embassy Square

project on Breckenridge Street when the facility moved into modern, spacious quarters in 2006.
Perry, who died earlier this year, was also cited for three decades of member-ship on the Salvation Army board and service he has provided to Th e Church of the Holy Innocents.
Donald Ray Matthews, a real estate agent and trucking company operator, won the 2007 award for his untiring work with two community groups. He has served as co-chair of the United Way of Vance County’s capital campaign and as a member of the United Way Board of Directors. Matthews also has served in a variety of positions with the Vance County Relay For Life to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.
Ray Meeks, the 2006 Citizen of the Year, accepted the award on behalf of his Chamber colleagues. Everyone attending the banquet, he said, was familiar with the challenges faced by Vance County and he referred to those in the audience as the answer to those challenges.
Meeks, chair of the Board of Trustees of the Maria Parham Healthcare Associa-tion during the award year, was cited for his support of county schools and was recognized as an active volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.
Ruth Burt, who spent her career edu-cating children and who continues to do so in retirement, was the Citizen of the Year for 2005. A public school teacher for 32 years, Miss Burt continued to serve the schools as a tutor at Pinkston Street Elementary and other schools.
She served as director of the Hender-son Institute Museum, which contains historical artifacts from schools for Vance County’s black children prior to integration.
Wayne Gray, who said, “I’ve always looked at working in the community as a hobby,” was the 2004 Citizen of the Year. “Th e community is only as good as you make it,” Gray said. “We can do it halfway or put our shoulders to the wheel and make things happen.”
Indeed, the community is a better place for its volunteers and the Cham-ber plays a valuable role in recognizing volunteerism with its annual award.

OPTIMUM MOVES INTO NEW FACILITY, CELEBRATES PURCHASE BY PHILIPS
For a company that tries to promote change, Optimum Lighting has seen its share of change in its own right.
Since it opened in Henderson in May 2005, Optimum has gone from an initial work force of 15 to approximately 100.
It has signed a 10-year lease on the 227,000-square-foot building formerly occupied by Purolator on Facet Road along-side U.S. 1 Bypass.
Now, the most recent change, announced in January — Optimum Lighting was bought by Royal Philips Electronics.
With each change, the future of the company has gleamed more brightly.
Optimum Lighting, now offi cially named Philips Opti-mum, has become part of an international company with more than 118,000 employees in 60 countries. Royal Philips Electronics provides cardiac care, acute care and home health care, energy-effi cient lighting solutions, fl at TV and new light-ing applications. Optimum’s specifi c contribution to that array of services is to deliver rapid design, engineering and building of customized energy-effi cient lighting for businesses to reduce lighting costs and provide accompanying improvement in workers’ morale and effi ciency. Th e company’s customers have included Ford Motor Company, Bed Bath and Beyond and DuPont. Other customers include cold storage facilities, park-ing garages and school gymnasiums.
Philips Chief Executive Offi cer Rudy Provoost said, “Th e acquisition of Optimum Lighting further strength-ens our overall ability to deliver tailor-made turnkey solu-
tions to our customers that provide superior lighting perfor-mance, while reducing their operating expenses.”
Th e move to Facet Road allowed Optimum to add about 40 employees as the company renovated the facility to accom-modate its particular needs. Project Manager Bob Campbell said, “We’re pleased with the move. We’ll be putting on more people.”
Th e North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center provided a $480,000 grant to aid the expansion, which the company estimates could add as many as 400 new employees over the next four or fi ve years.
Marlena Kassay and Marc Kassay, a husband-and-wife team, moved from Long Island, N.Y., almost six years ago, us-ing a map to determine a strategic location for their new plant. Th ey said that Henderson met their two primary criteria: easy access to transportation links and a good labor pool.
Because many of Optimum’s products are too large to ship by air, a good highway network was essential. Th e company contracts with truckers to transport fi xtures to the far reaches of the United States, Mexico and Canada.
“Th e availability of the workforce is good in Henderson,” Marc Kassay said.
As an innovative organization with potential for growth, the company is a welcome addition to the business commu-nity of Vance County.
Th eir Future
isBright Th e new sign in front of the
former Purolator plant off U.S. 1 tells the story: a rising star in Vance County is now beaming even more brightly! Optimum Lighting has been purchased by Royal Philips Electronics and is now Philips Optimum. At the same time,
it enjoys a new facilityon Facet Road.
