Lights are dimmed, music starts playing and out come colourful costumes and the rhythmic dancing of the islands. The music changes to the thud of hip hop complete with the b-boy spinning on his head and a skater defying gravity, making you ask the question, “How does he do that?” A big muscular man from Tonga takes the stage and he’s bending steel bars in his teeth and smashing bricks. Although he is rough and tough on the outside, the stories that he shares demonstrates the tenderness on the inside. This guy really cares.

These artists are young. They’re telling stories of hope and overcoming difficulties. Not only is this an evening of free entertainment in an environment safe from drugs and alcohol, but it’s a night that can be life changing for so many. Last year, this tour travelled up to the remote indigenous communities of the Cape York Peninsula and Torres Strait bringing life and hope through their message. Thirty performers travelled over 4,000 kilometres performing in front of nearly 2,000 people.

In 2009, the tour travels to remote Queensland and Northern Territory communities as well as Darwin and surrounding areas. The teams will be visiting high schools and performing in other venues as they present positive messages such as living free from drugs and alcohol, how to improve self esteem, and achieving personal dreams.

Team Xtreme uses athletic skill as well as feats of strength to bring a message of hope. They will bend bars, tear phone books, and use these as illustrations about what it means to overcome obstacles and barriers in life. It’s a positive message filled with stories from their own lives that challenge and inspire.

Bands, skaters, and other artists will bring their talents to the tour. People from many different nations will add their flair as a part of the entertainment, but also to make a difference in the lives of Australian youth. All of the performers and organizers pay their own way. No one receives a salary. They are all putting their “money where their mouth is” because they believe that they can make a difference.
