PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

2019 SCHOOL YEAR

COMMENCEMENT

Our first two weeks of the

2019 school year have gone

extremely smoothly!

The preps are very settled and

enjoying their time at school.

It is so pleasing to see them

being independent which is

promoted and supported

heavily by staff. It is vital for

children to develop independ-

ence as they grow to enable

them to make their way in the

world.

Classes across the school are

establishing their learning

communities and ways of in-

teracting with each other. It is

important to set the scene at

the beginning of the year to

promote respect, resilience

and responsibility. When

students are aware of the

expectations and respectful

ways we interact with each

other this promotes their way

of belonging in the world,

School Leaders……………………..

The school leaders have been

elected by their peers after a

very formal process. Students

who wished to be considered

for leadership positions,

presented their speeches in

front of their peers. Voting

then took place where

students were all able to vote

for whom they believed should

be

leaders. I congratulate them all

and know they will fulfil their

roles with great responsibility.

I also congratulate the

unsuccessful candidates and

commend them on the way

they have handled their

disappointment which shows

such resilience, a life long skill.

The successful candidates and

therefore our new school

leaders are :

Aidin Murica

21st CENTURY SPACE

Our 21st Century space has

now been completed and is

furnished and ready for use. It

is such an exciting initiative we

have developed at RHPS. The

curriculum is rigorous and very

relevant to students of today

to develop them for their

tomorrow where skills needed

are vastly different than they

were a generation ago. We

have a dedicated Science

space, an Eco System, a green

room for filming, lego walls

and a great deal of other

innovative areas all with

furniture to suit the types of

learning taking place.

SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS

We are preparing for School

Council Elections and currently

have several vacancies for

parents and co-opted

members to fill. School Council

is the governing body of the

school and plays a very

important role in setting

direction and looking at

strategic planning. The school

council has particular functions

in setting and monitoring the

school’s direction. Please

consider if you wish to be a

member. If we have the exact

number of candidates as

vacancies, we will not require

an election. Nomination forms

will be available at the office

next week. If you require

further information to assist

you in your decision, please

organise to see me.

The main responsibilities of

School Council are:

Finance: overseeing the

development of the school’s

annual budget and ensuring

proper records are kept of the

school’s financial operations.

We look forward to entering another exciting and rich school year for all and encourage parents and carers to be involved with RHPS as much as possible. Research shows that the closer and more positive experience parents and carers have with the school the more successful it will be for their children.

2019 School Captain & House Captains Each school captain nomination pleaded their case yesterday to the entire cohort and teachers on why they are the best candidate to become the RHPS school captains in 2019. All candidates spoke excellently and used many different persuasive devices to support their application. Congratulations to all outstanding candidates.

Speech Pathology News What is a Speech Pathologist?

Speech Pathologists study, diagnose and treat communication disorders, including difficulties with speech,

language, social communication, fluency and voice. People who experience difficulties swallowing food and

drink can also be helped by a Speech Pathologist (SPA, 2016).

Speech Pathology at Roxburgh Homestead Primary School:

Cued Articulation Classes:

Throughout 2019, I will be supporting the Foundation and Grade 1 teachers to use Cued Articulation when

teaching reading and writing skills. I will work with the students and teacher during classroom literacy lessons

and also attend planning sessions with teachers. Jane Passy, an Australian Speech Pathologist created this

system of hand cues (Cued Articulation) to represent each sound in the Australian language. School teachers

can use these cues to teach students the link between sounds and letters. During these classes, a key focus will

also be on oral language. We will focus on ‘classroom talk’ where students will learn new concepts by

collaborating and talking together (Barnes,2010).

No Pens Day:

No Pens Day is a whole day focused on oral language. On this day students will participate in a range of

engaging activities to develop their oral language skills. This means NO pens will be used throughout the day.

Language Groups:

Small group language sessions will occur at school. These sessions will target a range of language skills such as

vocabulary, grammar and understanding information.

Phonological Awareness Groups:

Small group phonological (sound) awareness sessions will also occur at school. These groups will focus on

recognising and manipulating sounds in words.

If you are concerned about your child’s language, speech or literacy development, please contact your child’s

teacher to discuss your concerns. If deemed appropriate, the classroom teacher may refer your child to a

Speech Pathologist for further investigation of their language skills.

I look forward to working with the students, teachers and school community to enhance communication across

the school.

Prep Excursion!

Animal Land Children's Farm

Week 4 – Tuesday 19th of February

What a fantastic way to promote your child's independence by visiting Animal Land Children’s Farm! This experience offers students a practical, hands-on learning opportunity where children will learn about the various animal species, get an insight into how a farm really works and learn about the im-portance of the natural environment. This important excursion will form the basis of developing oral language through experience within our classrooms.

Breakfast Club

The School Breakfast Club Program provides a healthy breakfast for students who may otherwise arrive at school hungry. Research shows that one in seven children arrive at school not having eaten breakfast, which can affect their learning and attendance.vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv The School Breakfast Clubs Program is managed by Foodbank Victoria, the largest food welfare agency in Australia. Foodbank Victoria in partnership with the Victorian Government will deliver healthy, free food supplies to participating schools.

Roxburgh Homestead Breakfast Club Open Every Tuesday and Thursday from 8:15am until 8:40am

House Points

All students & staff at Roxburgh Home-

stead Primary School belong to one of our

four houses. Our four founding houses are

named after the surrounding streets of

RHPS.

McPherson Redbacks (Red)

Ravenhill Sharks (Blue)

Whiltshire Dragons (Green)

Rostron Rhinos (Yellow)

The House System is a way of allowing

students to interact with other students

across all year levels to achieve a common

goal. We as a school take pride in allowing

our senior school students to apply for

leadership positions (House Captains &

Vice Captains) within the program. The

program also helps promote a sense of

group identity and school community.

Throughout the school year, students from

all four houses earn House Points for their

House team. Points can be earned inside

the classroom, outside of the classroom,

during sporting events such as Athletics

Day and also during academic events such

as the Science Fair,

Education Week and our very own Roxy’s

Got Talent!

Each week, House Points are tallied up by

our House Captains and Vice Captains and

announced over our P.A system on a week-

ly basis. Teams that have accumulated the

most points in a three week period are an-

nounced the winners at RHPS Assemblies,

with the winning team getting to sing their

team song with pride. At the end of school

year, the team who has earned the most

house points will be crowned our winners

for 2019. We look forward to sharing our

House updates with you via our website,

newsletter, announcements and

assemblies.

I would like to personally wish all our

students good luck in 2019 and I know that

this year will be an exciting time to earn as

many House Points as possible for your

team!
