    FROMOURPASTOR

If you are reading this, Christmas is over -although if you are reading it at the 5 p.m. Masson Saturday it will still be Christmas Day. This is

the time, once in seven years, when a Sundaycomes the day after Christmas. That means itsrather an exhausting time for the clergy, although I know we are comparatively lucky at

Saint Charles. We have 11 Masses between the 9 a.m. on Friday morning andthe 12.45 Spanish Mass on Sunday but some of the big parishes have manymore, including commitments on Sunday evening.

The truth is that the celebration of Christmas extends beyond one day; it is awhole season of rejoicing which continues through three Sundays until the Feastof the Baptism of the Lord, this year on January 9th. This first Sunday is theFeast of the Holy Family, reminding us that the child who was conceivedmiraculously was nevertheless born naturally and needed to be raised in thesetting of a family. All of us become who we are through nature (the genes weinherit) and nurture (the environment which shapes us), and our family has aninfluence on us in both ways. The Son of God was divine for all ages but tobecome fully human He had to grow up under the beneficial nurturing of Maryand Joseph.

Family life is our training for broader social life: when children are treated withpatience and compassion they grow into confident adults; on the other handwhen things go wrong in the family it will often affect our other relationshipsfor years to come. Todays second reading from Saint Paul (Colossians 3: 12-21) gives a wonderful description of the right attitude for family life and its apretty good blueprint for the world:

Brothers and sisters:Put on, as Gods chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another,if one has a grievance against another;as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.

By next Sunday we will be into 2011. January 1st, the Solemnity of Mary, theSolemnity of Mary, theSolemnity of Mary, theSolemnity of Mary, theMother of God,Mother of God,Mother of God,Mother of God, is usually a holy day of obligation. This year, because it falls ona Saturday it is not, and so there will be no Vigil Mass on New Years Eve(although there will be Mass at 10 a.m. on that Saturday morningMass at 10 a.m. on that Saturday morningMass at 10 a.m. on that Saturday morningMass at 10 a.m. on that Saturday morning). However,I still believe it is important to place our hopes for the New Year in Godshands so there will be a Vigil of Prayer from 9 p.m. to midnight in the churchVigil of Prayer from 9 p.m. to midnight in the churchVigil of Prayer from 9 p.m. to midnight in the churchVigil of Prayer from 9 p.m. to midnight in the churchon Friday nighton Friday nighton Friday nighton Friday night. I invite you to join me and Father Alvaro as we pray in thepresence of the Blessed Sacrament - even if it is only for a short time. HappyNew Year!

    Infinite God,

your goodness was far out of our spirits reachyour love more than mind could bear,

until in love you sent your son.

    He showed us your goodness,

your love made human, now soft enough for us to see.

We call him brother. We call you Father.

Help us accept your familiarity with us,the life of Jesus.
