A veteran of 97 games with Trenton, goalie Dave Caruso has assumed the role as the AHL-Albany Devils’ top goalie in recent weeks. And it has been Caruso who has led a resurgent Albany team to three wins in its last four games, as Caruso notched his first-career AHL shutout against the AHL’s top offensive team, the Charlotte Checkers, on February 15.

In the same game that Caruso blanked Charlotte, Trenton’s leading scorer the last two seasons, Jeff Prough, assisted on a second-period-goal by Adam Henrique, to give Prough his first AHL point.

Caruso and Prough are two of 10 players to suit up for both Trenton and Albany this season, with J.S. Berube, Andy Thomas, and J.S. Berube also currently enjoying stints with the A-Devils.

Albany is in action tonight in Binghamton to take on the Senators, one night after the A-Devils used a Steve Zalewski goal with five seconds remaining in the third period to defeat the Worcester Sharks, 5-4, in New York’s state capital.

JACKALS POUNCE ON DEVILS FOR 5-2 WIN

Elmira, NY - Behind four straight goals to start the night’s scoring, the Elmira Jackals defeated the Trenton Devils, 5-2, Friday at First Arena. Trenton’s 26 shots on goal were the team’s fewest since January 9 when they managed 20 shots at South Carolina.

The Jackals’ league-leading offense was paced by a one-goal, two-assist effort by Patrick Coulombe and three assists from Yannick Tifu, while Marco Cousineau made 24 saves to earn the win.

Jeremy Akeson and Dan Charleston were Trenton’s goal scorers, both converting in the third period. Shane Connelly made nine saves on 13

shots as the losing goalie, and Jeff Lerg made 13 saves on 14 shots off the bench in his first appearance for Trenton since February 6. Having alternated wins and losses over their last nine games, the Devils slip to 19-28-1-3 and are 2-16-0-1 in games following a victory.

Patrick Coulombe started the night’s scoring and put Elmira ahead, 1-0, 1:41 into the first period. Coulombe’s goal came on the power play, as the Jackals finished the evening 2-of-6 with the man-advantage. R. J. Anderson put Elmira ahead, 2-0, with 3:21 remaining in the first period. Patrick Coulombe and Yannick Tifu each tallied one of their three points by earning helpers.

Brian Lebler enhanced Elmira’s lead to 3-0, by capitalizing off the rebound of a hard Brock McBride shot, 1:37 into the second period. Elmira chased Shane Connelly from the game by making the score 4-0 at 5:02 of the second, when Eric Lampe slipped in his fourth goal against Trenton this week, despite heavy back-checking pressure from Brad Miller.

Jeremy Akeson put the Devils on the board and broke his 12-game goal-less streak at 6:24 of the third period, by out-muscling an Elmira defenseman and sliding his eighth goal of the season under Cousineau. Trevor Kell got the assist, and now has three points in the last four games.

Michael Dubuc replenished Elmira’s four-goal bulge 3:33 later, scoring a power-play goal that was assisted by Yannick Tifu and R.J. Anderson.

Dan Charleston narrowed Elmira’s lead to 5-2 with 5:22 remaining in the third period, by scoring on the rebound of Ryan Ginand’s initial shot. Defenseman Harry Young also got an assist on the play in his first game in a Trenton uniform.

The Devils out-shot Elmira 13-7 in the third period, following a season low three-shot second period, but never got any closer as the Jackals held on to win 5-2.

The Devils and Jackals play the rubber-game of their three-game series, Saturday at Sun National Bank Center with the opening face-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

#16 Ryan Ginand had an assist Friday and his 57 points are tied for third most in the ECHL.

First year head coach Kevin Dean tried a new line Wednesday in Elmira, and the newly assembled trio of Dan Charleston, Ryan Ginand, and Matt Vokes payed immediate dividends, producing two goals on their first two shifts.

“Ginand, Vokes and Charleston had a lot of energy and were playing with a lot of speed,” said Dean of the lines first period play Wedneday. Combining for eight points in Wednesday’s 5-4 win and two more points in Friday’s 5-2, loss the unit has been on the ice for six of Trenton’s seven goals this week.

The line’s center, Matt Vokes, has a goal and assist in the two games. Vokes has four goals and six assisst in 15 games for Trenton, in what has been an injury-plagued season for the former Brown University standout. His goal Friday (1g, 1a) was his first since December 11 at Elmira.

“I’m sure that built some confidence for him, especially that big goal in the third period,” Dean said. “But he’s a smart enough player to know that the score sheet isn’t the only way to measure yourself as a hockey player. The more he plays the better his game will get.”

Despite injuries over the last two seasons, Vokes continues to be nearly a point-per-game player for Trenton. He has 10 points in 15 games this season, and for his career, 63 points (24g, 39a) in 67 professional games.

Charleston has also played far short of a full season for Trenton, posting 22 points (10g, 12a) in 17 games for Trenton, a year after he racked up 33 (6g, 27a) in 25 games for the T-Devils.

Ginand is the only one who’s appered in almost all of Trenton’s games. With three goals and four assists in the last four games, the former Northeastern

forward enters Saturday tied for third place in ECHL scoring with 57 points (21g, 36a). In Dean’s eyes, Ginand’s success reflect another Devils star. “All of his goals are right at the top of the crease and that’s a credit to him - a little like Zach Parise in that regard. “

Though Ginand was teamed with Ryan Hayes and J.S. Berube for most of the season, Dean feels Charleston and Vokes could further enrich the production of his leading scorer.

“Charleston and Vokes are good at making plays and getting pucks to the net,” Dean said, “and Ginand can be the beneficiary of that.

“They all have extremely high hockey IQ,” Dean said. “They’re all quick and they all play with urgency.

A NEW COMBINATION

#17 Dan Charleston has four points (1g, 3a) in the last two games.

Trenton slipped to nine games under .500 with Friday’s loss, equaling a season low. The Devils have alternated wins and losses over the last nine games and are 2-16-0-1 in games following a win.

Saturday marks the home debut for Devils defenseman Harry Young who was assigned from Albany to Trenton Friday. Meanwhile, forward Darcy Zajac was promoted to Albany for the second time this season.

Albany, NY - Prior to Friday’s games, right winger Darcy Zajac was recalled by the Albany Devils from Trenton (ECHL), while defenseman Harry Young was reassigned by New Jersey (NHL) to Trenton. The announcement was made by Albany and Trenton General Manager Chris Lamoriello.

Zajac, 24, is making his second stint with the AHL Devils this season. He was previously recalled on Nov. 27 and played 15 games before being returned on loan to Trenton on Jan. 11. Zajac registered his first career AHL point with an assist at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Dec. 26. A few days later, he netted his first goal at Binghamton on Dec. 31. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native has appeared in 32 games for Trenton, posting six goals and 17 assists.

Young, 21, has played 38 games for Albany this year and has a goal and three assists. He made his professional debut and scored his first career goal at Adirondack on Oct. 16. Young was a season-high plus-3 at Syracuse on Nov. 19 and has had a plus rating in 10 games.

The 6-4, 215-lb. defenseman finished his fifth season, including four with Windsor, in the OHL in 2009-10, producing a career-high 20 points with nine goals and 11 assists in 65 regular season games, plus 1 assist in 19 playoff games. He recorded a career-high 12 assists for Windsor in 2007-08, and in 2008-09 led the OHL with 41 postseason penalty minutes in 20 games. Young captained the Spitfires to Memorial Cup victories in 2009 and 2010.

Young made his Trenton debut Friday in Elmira, recording one minor penalty and a secondary assist on Dan Charleston’s third period goal. After wearing jersey #32 for Albany, Young is sporting #6 for Trenton.

Drafted by New Jersey in the eighth round in 2008, 202nd overall, the left-handed shooter was born November 12, 1989.

SCOUTING THE JACKALS* The Jackals are in second place in the Atlantic Division, and eighth

SCOUTING THE DEVILS* The Devils enter Saturday with a record of 19-28-1-3, which puts

them third in the Atlantic Division, and nine points out of the final Eastern Conference playoff position.

* With 161 goals in 51 games (3.16 goals per game) Trenton’s offense is ninth best in the ECHL. Ryan Ginand is the team’s leading scorer, and his 57 points (21g, 36a) are already 30 more than he accumulated all of last season for Trenton.

* Defensively, Trenton has given up 187 goals in 51 games (3.67 per game) which is 16th in the ECHL. Shane Connelly has Trenton’s starting goalie lately, and he’s won four of his last seven decisions. However, Connelly was pulled after allowing four goals on 13 shots last night, and relieved by Jeff Lerg, who made his first appearance for Trenton after a stint with AHL-Albany.

* At even strength, the Devils are minus-18, scoring 112 times and allowing 130 goals.

* The Devils’ power play has only scored twice its last 17 chances, and at 17.3%, ranks 13th in the league.
