DEVILS FLUSH ROYALS’ STREAK WITH 4-2 WIN

Trenton, NJ - Tony Zancanaro’s goal 43 seconds after Reading erased Trenton’s 2-0 lead was the difference as the Trenton Devils defeated the Reading Royals, 4-2, Saturday night at Sun National Bank Center.

Snapping their three-game losing streak, Trenton ups its record to 16-24-1-3, winning for the fourth time against Reading. Jeff Prough paced the offense by netting his 17th career two-goal game in a Trenton uniform, on a night he reached the 20-goal mark for the third straight season. Former Royal Shane Connelly earned his second win with the Devils, making 27 saves on 29 shots.

Losing for the first time in regulation since January 19, the Royals sink to 28-12-2-3. Michael Hutchinson was the losing goalie, allowing three goals on 32 shots.

Jeff Prough got the Devils off to a quick start, scoring the game’s first two goals. Prough scored his first goal by poking his own rebound past Hutchinson, after the Reading goalie was unable to re-set himself after a collision at the top of his crease. Prough’s second tally came after Trenton’s leading goal scorer had his off-target shot ricochet into the net off a Royals defenseman.

The Devils carried their two-goal lead through most of a first period in which they didn’t surrender a shot-against until the final five minutes. Despite the Devils 19-2 shots advantage in the opening frame, Devin Timberlake beat Connelly to the low glove side with Reading’s second shot, with 1:54 remaining in the opening stanza.

Midway through the second period, Dallas Jackson pulled Reading even by scoring a power-play goal, which was assisted by Andrew Sarauer and Tyler Murovich.

Tony Zancanaro restored Trenton’s lead by scoring the eventual game-winning goal, just 43 seconds after the Royals had knotted the score, 2-2. Zancanaro’s first game-deciding goal this season came after the longest tenured Devils player snuck behind the Reading defense, and blistered a quick snap shot inside the post.

With a lead for the second time, the Devils clamped down defensively in the game’s second half. Reading had a chance to claw back into the game when it was handed a power-play opportunity in the game’s final minutes, but Trenton’s defense stood pat.

In the final minute of the third period, Taylor Vichorek iced the game with an empty-net goal, knocking a shot from his own end into the net off of the side-boards. The goal was Vichorek’s fourth this season, and second against Reading.

Winning 4-2, Trenton will attempt to take the rubber game in the three-game weekend series from Reading, when the clubs square off in a matinee affair Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Since Jeff Prough arrived in Trenton early in the 2008-09 season, he has been the Devils top goal scorer.

After scoring just two pro goals in a combined 15 games with the Florida Everblades and Gwinnett Gladiators to start his pro career, Prough exploded for 31 in 62 games in his first season in New Jersey’s capital city. Prough’s 31 goals led the T-Devils that season, as did the 30 he posted last year.

After Ryan Ginand and Ryan Hayes had toggled the team’s goal lead over the last few months, Prough has re-taken his spot at the top of the heap, by scoring seven goals in the last five games.

Prough’s recent hot streak includes two two-goal performances, boosting Prough’s total of two-goal games to 17 in his Trenton career. The elusive third goal of the hat trick has so far eluded the Brown University alum.

While Prough hasn’t yet turned a hat trick, he is currently on pace for 34 tallies this season, which would be his best goal scoring season as a pro.

In four years at Brown University, Prough had 49 goals and 60 assists but did not record any hat tricks.

In the Trenton Titans’ inaugural season in 1999-2000, their assistant coach was Middletown, NJ native Mike Haviland. Haviland was Trenton’s assistant coach for two seasons, departing to become the head coach of the ECHL’s Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies in their inaugural 2001-02 season.

Haviland would coach the Boardwalk Bullies for the first three years of their existence, choosing to come back to Trenton to become the Titans’ head man in 2004-05, two seasons after he led the Boardwalk Bullies to the Kelly Cup championship.

Although Haviland would only be the Titans’ head coach for one season, his tenure was memorable, as the Titans won their only championship in team history in the spring of 2005.

Having guided two different teams to championships in the ECHL in a three-year span, Haviland was tabbed as the head coach of the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals in 2005-06. Haviland coached Norfolk for two seasons,

moving to join the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs when the Chicago Blackhawks changed their affiliate for the 2007-08 season. In three seasons as an AHL head

coach, Haviland’s teams went 137-77.

Continuing to advance his career, Haviland was named an assistant coach for the Chicago Blackhawks at the start of the 2008-09 season, and earned his name on hockey’s grandest trophy when Chicago broke its 49-year Stanley Cup drought in 2009-10.

As a result of Haviland’s and the Blackhawks’ success last season, Haviland was pegged to assist his NHL boss, Joel Quenneville (a former NJ Devil himself), at the recent NHL All-Star Game at RBC Center in Raleigh, NC.

Haviland and Quenneville coached Team Staal, which was defeated by Team Lidstrom in a wild 11-10 offensive firework show on January 30. Team Lidstrom was coached by Vancouver Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault, and Philadelphia Flyer boss Peter Laviolette.

#34 Jeff Prough scored two goals Saturday, his 19th and 20th of the season.

TRENTON IN NHL ALL-STAR GAME PROUGH HUNTING FOR HAT TRICKS

THOMAS, CARUSO, ALBANY IN ATLANTIC CITY MONDAY NIGHTFive years after the Boardwalk Bullies left Atlantic City for Stockton, CA in 2005, the New Jersey Devils

announced that its AHL and ECHL affiliates would both play “home” games at Boardwalk Hall during the 2010-11 season. The slate of games announced included four for the AHL-Albany Devils, and Trenton’s matchup with Wheeling on January 23.

Two of Albany’s four games in AC are being held this week, with the A-Devils hosting the AHL-leading Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins this Monday night, after falling to the two time defending Calder Cup Champion Hershey Bears, 5-3, Friday at Boardwalk Hall. Albany plays in AC again Sunday, February 27 vs. Norfolk.

With the Devils organization re-christening Boardwalk Hall as a hockey facility, The Hall becomes one of the oldest arenas in North American hockey. Other notable “older” arena include Princeton University’s Hobey Baker Memorial Rink (1922), Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena (1910) and the Ricoh Arena (1921) in Toronto, which houses the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.

The Devils face the Royals Sunday, with the teams having split two games over the past two nights. Trenton’s 4-2 win last night moves the season series to a 5-4 Reading advantage, with the teams due to play seven more times this season, including today.

Reading’s four losses to Trenton is a let down for the ECHL’s best team compared to last year when the Royals took 11 of 14 from Trenton. That dominance was the difference between the teams in the standings as Reading beat Trenton out by five points for a playoff berth.

The Devils placed defenseman Jordon Southorn on 21-day injured reserve today, the result of a collision and upper body injury in Saturday night’s game. In his stead, defenseman Justin Coutu has been activated from 7-day IR. Trenton is without defenseman Andy Thomas for the third straight game; the second-year Devil was recalled to Albany Friday. Goalie Dave Caruso also remains with the Devils’ AHL affiliate.

For Wheeling, a transaction-filled week continued Saturday with the loan of leading-scorer Ben Gordon to AHL-Rochester today, the loan of forward Casey Haines to AHL-Lake Erie, and the return of forward Rich Greenop from AHL-Toronto.

Also on Sunday, Troop 21541 from Marlton will be selling Girl Scout cookies on the concourse behind section 117. Trenton’s #26 Dave Leaderer topples Reading’s #12 Chris Blight with #8 Martin Nolet alongside.

Trenton Devils players visited the Quaker Bridge Mall Build-A-Bear Workshop® Tuesday to make their own furry friends to be auctioned off for charity. This year marks the sixth straight season that Trenton has teamed up with Build-A-Bear Workshop®.

At left, Matt Vokes and Scorch display their cuddly creations. Each Devils player created a unique critter, complete with outfits, accessories, and birth certificates.

The animals will be auctioned off on Saturday, February 19 and Sunday, February 20 when the Devils host the Elmira Jackals at 7 p.m. and the Wheeling Nailers at 4 p.m., respectively at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, NJ. The silent auction will begin when doors open at 6 p.m. on Saturday and will conclude at the end of the second intermission during Sunday’s game.

All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity – Trenton Area, which was founded in July 1986 with the mission of building affordable, quality homes in the East Trenton area. With the help of thousands of volunteers Habitat-Trenton has built over 80 new homes in Trenton.

SCOUTING THE ROYALS* The Royals are in first place of the Eastern Conference’s Atlantic

Division, with a record of 28-12-2-3. The Royals are 5-1-0-2 in their last eight, with their one regulation loss coming last night in Trenton.

* Reading has the third highest scoring offense in the league, with 154 goals scored in 45 games (3.42 per game). Reading’s defense ranks ninth, with 136 goals-against (3.02 per game). At even strength, Reading is plus-24, scoring 113 and giving up 89.

* Reading will be without its two leading scorers tonight, as Ben Gordon and Ryan Cruthers were both called up to the AHL this week. In light of these call-ups, the Devils can afford to pay extra attention to Yannick Riendeau, who has three goals and three assists in seven games against Trenton.

* Reading’s wins leader in goal is Matt Dalton, who is 11-6-1 in 18 starts. However, Dalton is no longer with the Royals, as he was called up to AHL-Providence Dec. 29 As Dalton got called up, Michael Hutchinson has taken over as the Royals top netminder. Hutchinson is 4-3-4-1, but took the loss last night in Trenton. The Devils may also have to contend with Ben Scrivens who stymied the Devils with 50 save sin Reading’s 4-2 win Friday night. The win was the first for Scrivens for Reading since he was sent down from the AHL-Toronto Marlies earlier in the week.

* Reading’s special teams have been hit-and-miss all season. Reading’s PP went 1-of-4 last night, and is 13th in the ECHL at 17.2%. Reading’s PK was successful all six times it was put to the test last night, and ranks 10th at 82.4% efficiency.

SCOUTING THE DEVILS* The Devils enter Sunday with a record of 16-24-1-3, having cut

Reading’s advantage in the season series to 5-4 by winning 4-2 on Saturday night.

* Trenton’s offense is ninth best in the ECHL. The Devils 141 goals scored in 44 games gives them an average of 3.20 per game. The Devils’ defense is tied for last in the league with the Toledo Walleye, surrendering 163 goals in 44 games (3.70 per game). At even strength, the Devils are minus-18, scoring 96 and allowing 114.

* With seven goals in his last five games, Jeff Prough is the hottest Devil at the moment, NOW . For the season Ryan Ginand leads the way offensively, with his 46 points (17g, 29a) tying him for ninth in the ECHL.

* Tony Zancanaro scored the game-winning goal Saturday, his first game-winner of the season and his seventh goal overall. Last season, the Trenton, MI native was tied with Jeff Prough for GWGs with five.

* Shane Connelly was the winning goalie for Trenton last night. Since Connelly was acquired Dec. 1, he has two wins, and both have come against Reading. Trenton’s other goalie is Jeff Lerg. Lerg is 6-6, with a 3.38 goals-against average and .890 save percentage this season. Due to injuries and a stint with AHL-Albany, Dave Caruso hasn’t played for Trenton since January 9 at South Carolina.

* The Devils power play was blanked in six chances last night, not scoring for only the second time in the last 10 games. By dropping just .4% as a result of last night’s effort, Trenton’s PP dropped four places in the standings. Trenton’s PK has struggled lately, and gave up another PP goal last night. At 80.4%, Trenton ranks 16th on the PK.
