Instead of telling you a ghost story around a summer campfire, we have an all-too familiar tale to share: Myra has a grandson named John. One day, Myra gets a call from someone who says John was arrested last night and needs $500 for bail. The caller says not to tell John’s parents or anyone else because John is embarrassed. Myra is scared at first — but she is also suspicious. Myra hangs up and calls John right away. John says he is on his way to class and not in jail so the caller is nothing but a scammer! Family emergency scams like this try to scare people into sending money to help a loved one in trouble. The fraud can play out in many ways but the scam is the same: the caller lies, tries to scare you and rushes you to pay so you don’t have time to think twice or check things out before you send money. And once you do that, you’ll never get it back.

To avoid family emergency scams:

Resist the urge to act immediately — no matter how dramatic the story.

�� Call or message your loved one, even if the caller/scammer advises against it.

�� Use a number to call your family member that you know is right, not a number that the caller/scammer gives you.

�� Never send cash, gift cards, cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Western Union or another type of wire transfer. Once the scammer gets the money, it’s gone.

If you spot this or any other scam, report it to the Federal Trade Com-mission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or call 1-877-382-4357.

Storage has always been an issue at the Senior Center. The building is constructed with a truss roof and there is only a narrow walkway upstairs with very limited space. All the area on the main floor is set aside for activities, meetings and oGces, and our building is built on a slab, so there is no base-ment. The Senior Center is a multi-functional Town building. We hold all elections at the building, plus it serves as our temporary shelter during weather emergencies, and it is available for board and committee meetings and citizen functions. Therefore, we store voting booths, shelter supplies, including cots and other equipment at the center, as well as chairs/tables and other meeting equipment. A few years ago, we purchased a 40-foot storage container, and we have two, older and very small sheds for outside maintenance equipment and seasonal supplies (these need to be retired). To increase our storage space, special funding of $20,000 has been provided by Senator Rodrigues through the South Coast Community Foundation. To ensure we get the biggest bang for our bucks, COA board members met with Superintendent Aaron Polansky and his staJ from Old Colony Regional Technical Vocational High School. Old Colony agreed that this would be an excellent training project for their students. Under the watchful eyes of their teachers, and with support from Rochester Facility Manager Andrew Daniels, Old Colony students will be designing and building a 24-foot by 16-foot, single story storage building for us. The project is currently in the “preconstruction” phase. We are obtaining permits and approvals from the various Town Boards and other Departments. Construction will begin this fall. Our Highway Department will kick-oJ work by helping with site work. Project completion is planned for June 2022. The new Senior Center shed, an addition of over 380 square feet of storage, is another Rochester team event including inter-generational and inter-departmental collaboration. We are excited that students from Old Colony is our design and build team. This is a great community project.

Hearing loss is among the most common conditions aJecting older adults, according to the National Institute of Health. It aJects 1 in 3 people aged 65-74, and almost half of people over 75. Hearing loss occurs in some people naturally as we age. This is called presbycusis. Hearing loss also occurs due to accumulated exposures to very loud noises. This is noise induced hearing loss and commonly aJects construction workers, musicians, farmers, airport workers and those in the armed forces. There are also physiological causes for hearing loss; viral and/or bacterial infections, heart conditions, stroke, head injuries and certain medications. The most common reason for hearing loss in the elderly in cerumen build up or blockage. Cerumen is a fancy word for earwax! If you are experiencing hearing loss, seek a professional to help assess the cause. But Medicare Part D script plans change every year no matter whether you joined a new plan or stayed with your same plan from 2020. Here are a few reasons why you may be paying more for your prescriptions in 2021. 1) Your medication is no longer covered by your drug plan - if your 2021 script plan dropped your medication, your plan should provide you with a 30 day "transition fill" so you & your doctor can have time to find an alternative medication or file a "formulary exception" requesting an exception for that drug. 2) Your 2021 Medicare script plan may have a higher initial deductible than last year. So you may pay more until you meet your new 2021 plan's deductible. 3) Or your Medicare drug plan may have increased the cost-sharing (co-pays or co-insurance) for your plan's drug tiers. A lifelong resident of the Southcoast, she takes inspiration from it. The exhibit at the Cape Cultural Center runs from July 21st to August 14th.
