Steve Stack- house completed 11-of-19 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown, and Ricky Brown scored on a pair of short-yard- age plunges to help Brenham pull away in the middle two quarters. The Cubs led 15-7 at halftime and 29-7 going into the final period. Considered a favorite to make a run at a district title, Bren- ham struggled out of the gate with a pair of quality nondistrict opponents in Magnolia West and Magnolia. Despite a couple of early blemishes on their rec- ord, the Cubs should enter district play battle-tested. Player of the week: Kaden Watts, Brenham The Cubs didn’t just make plays on offense, they were successful in all three phases of the game in their win over Bryan. Not only did they hold the Vikings to just over 100 yards of total offense, but a pair of punt returns from Kaden Watts helped swing the momentum in the Cubs’ favor for good. Watts ran back a 60-yarder in the first half for a touchdown that gave his team the lead. A 40-yard re- turn in the second half set up the sec- ond of Brown’s two touchdown runs and made the score 29-7. The rest of the district Cedar Creek couldn’t keep pace with Leander in a 37-9 loss on the road. While the defeat knocked the Eagles to an 0-3 record in nondistrict, there were a few bright spots for Cedar Creek. Quarterback Bryan Allen’s 5-yard run in the fourth quarter was the first points of the season for the Eagles, who would add a 27-yard field goal later in the period as well. … Glenn was able to put up yards, but a pair of turnovers and a safety were too much to over- come in a 22-7 loss at the hands of Pflu- gerville. … Connally got its first win of the year down at House Park by knock- ing off McCallum 24-17. … Bastrop con- tinued to struggle through nondistrict play against a high-powered Johnson team, falling 55-0. … Weiss scored 40 unanswered points to blow past Rouse in a 54-20 win for the Wolves. Standout Raiders (2-1) quarterback Mason Shorb had a solid day even in defeat, throwing for 254 yards and a pair of touchdowns. … East View (1-2) couldn’t pick up a win in the Hill Country, falling 32-20 to Canyon Lake. The Patriots were able to keep things close in the first half, but the Hawks pulled away late thanks to a strong ground-based attack that kept the powerful Patriots offense on the sideline for long swaths of time. ... But head coach Jenny Richardson and the Georgetown volleyball team took advantage of Weiss’ youth and mistakes Sept. 7, claiming a four-set victory, 25-15, 19-25, 25-13, 25-20. The Eagles (17-14) are now riding a three-match win streak going into Fri- day’s District 25-5A home opener against Cedar Park. Weiss (13-8) will host Manor Friday night in its District 18-5A opener. “I’m proud of my girls,” Richardson said. “I told them their goal was to win (our last three) nondistrict matches after a tough tournament schedule, and they did it. In fact, after tonight’s win, they all remarked they reached their goal.” Weiss made 14 unforced errors in the first-set loss and looked disorganized and unsure of themselves early on. Coach Karen Huffman said slow starts have become too common for a team with playoff aspirations. “We just can’t seem to come out on all cylinders recently,” Huffman said. “That’s one thing we really have to work on going into district. We have to be better to start matches if we’re going to do well in district play.” The Wolves did find some confi- dence in the second set. The Wolves ran off an 8-3 scoring run with the set tied at 13-13 to open a 21-16 lead and then closed it out, 25-19. But just as confident they were in the second set, the Wolves lost it in set three as the Georgetown offense hit its stride. Freshman 6-foot-4 middle Addy Gaido blasted seven of her match-high 16 kills in the third for Georgetown, while senior setter Annika Flora added 12 assists and two of her match-high six total kills. The Eagles carried that momentum into the fourth set and closed out the match from there. Flora finished with 38 assists and six kills to go with the six blocks. Gaido hit at a 31% clip and had three total blocks. Senior Jaylen Anderson tallied 11 kills, eight digs and three total blocks for Weiss while freshman Takyla Brown chipped in 16 assists, 13 digs and five kills. Georgetown head coach Jenny Richardson and the Eagles topped Weiss in four sets Sept. 7 in the final nondistrict match for both teams.
