Learning Walk Focusing on Years 3/4

Dear Parents

On June 4 between 9 and 10.30am we will be running a Learning Walk.

Please join us if you have a child in Years 3/4 or you’re just interested in taking part.

Parents will spend time in the classroom with their own children, helping them learn and understand how

learning occurs in the classroom.

This experience is likely to be very different to your own experience of primary school.

We will also visit other classrooms and then meet with Marie and Greg along with the classroom teachers, to

discuss the experience. This will help you understand how the strategies used in class can be used by you at

home with your children.

This is a special opportunity to support your child's learning so that they can perform better at school.

The children will soon be making invitations for parents to attend this event.

slip on your children's invitation.

Learning Dispositions = Keys to Learning Success

What are learning dispositions?

A child's knowledge, skills and attitudes combine as dispositions, which

are tendencies to respond to situations in particular ways. The term

'learning dispositions', or 'dispositions to learning', refer to the way in

which learners engage in and relate to the learning process. Learning

dispositions affect how students approach learning and therefore the

outcomes of their learning. Children who give up on tasks easily may

require the disposition of persistence or lacking curiosity may require the

disposition of questioning.

At St. Theresa’s the staff have been led through a number of workshops to highlight the

dispositions that we believe the children we teach require. When we identified them we then

thought to name them ‘Keys to Learning Success’. These will complement the Growth Mindsets

that are already in place (Growth mindset is the belief that one's intelligence can be grown or

developed with persistence, effort, and a focus on learning. Individuals with a growth mindset

believe they are capable of learning nearly anything if they work hard and accept failures and

challenges as opportunities to grow).

St Theresa’s Keys to Learning Success are:

Curiosity - A curious person wants to learn more about the world around them and take action by discovering new things and ideas. Problem Solving - A problem solver is someone who uses his or her resources and skills to reach a solution. Metacognition - A metacognitive thinker reflects back on what they’ve produced to understand their own thinking processes and learning strategies.

Innovation - We challenge ideas and think of alternatives.

Determination - I can achieve my learning goal/s and am confident that I will succeed if I persevere.

You will begin to hear more about our keys to learning success from your children when teachers

introduce them to their classes during the remainder of the year.

CASEA WEEK 5

During week 5 of the CASEA Program the focus of the group is on social problem- solving using THINK and DO. The group continues to develop their understanding of the STOP, THINK, DO traffic light strategy as a method for solving social problems. There is particular focus on helping children to

come up with multiple solutions and evaluate the consequence of their actions. There’s a discussion around the importance of the children understanding their own and other people’s feelings when

deciding the best solution.

Rock and Roll with Year 3 & 4s…and join us for the 3/4 Learning Walk on Tuesday June 4th

The DISCO is coming!

The Fundraising Group is organizing another fantastic disco for the children.

Date : Friday 21st June from 6pm – 8pm

Cost : $8 per child (includes disco entry, hotdog & drink)

Also on the night the children will have the opportunity to buy popcorn and

lollies, have their hair sprayed, get a tattoo and join in some other fun

surprises. It’s going to be a sensational night!

SCHOOL UNIFORM REMINDER

Students should be wearing their full Winter uniform by now. A reminder that runners are only to be worn on sport days otherwise children should be wearing black leather school shoes. White socks are to be worn but the girls may wear dark blue tights or long white socks with their tunics. Also make sure all uniform items are labelled with your child’s name. We are collecting lots of winter jumpers and jackets that have no names and cannot be returned.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN

Keep collecting the Woolworths stickers. There are only a couple more weeks left! The more stickers we

collect the more FREE EQUIPMENT we get for our school.

We have 2 collection boxes for the stickers, one near the office and one in the prep/1 area. So keep shopping at Woolies, collect the stickers and bring them back to school. Get your family and friends to do it too.

If you want to know anything at all about “How the Earth’s surface has changed over time because of natural and

manmade processes”, just ask a Year 3 or 4 student. They have been studying the rock cycle and talking about different

types of rocks and how they have formed and how to tell them apart. They have thought about what Kororoit Creek might

look like into the future (check their blogs to see some fantastic ideas and detailed designs). Greg, the rock expert, spoke

to the students today about volcanos and how they erupt……they were so enthusiastic about Greg’s talk that some of the

students spent recess building a volcano in the sandpit. (see below) The students spent last Monday watching a film on

volcanos at IMAX and then followed it up with a visit to the museum, where they discussed the changes that they saw in a

display showing a forest in the past and now. Here are some of the student’s thoughts about their learning “I used to think

that volcanos were deadly because of the lava being super duper hot and killing people. Now I think that it’s the gases that

people breathe in that kills them.” (Gemma). “I used to think that lava was the only dangerous cause of a volcano. But now

I think that movement of the tectonic plates creates pressure which makes volcanos erupt.” (Benjamin). “I used to think that

volcanos only had lava in them. But now I know volcanos have molten rock, gases and ash that are as dangerous as lava.”
