Talking about the heart surgery her daughter will receive in Korea, Bui Thi Them, mother of four year old Huynh Thi Ngoc Thuan of Nghia Hanh district said, “My daughter suffers from this and she can’t play normally like other kids her age because her health is so unstable. We struggle with just our daily needs so could not even imagine paying for this surgery. When we re-ceived the message from Doosan Vina that we were selected for the free car-diac surgery in Korea we were so hap-py and excited. We are so grateful to Doosan Vina and Chung Ang hospital.” The two heart patients and their families departed for Korea immedi-ately after the service in Vietnam and the doctors took the children to Chung Ang University Hospital in Korea for surgery between July 13th and 27th.

MEET THE TEAM

Quality Defines a Great Brand a Great Brand

Product quality is one of the top considerations when making a purchase; and supplying top quality products to customers is crucial to the

very survival of a business. At Doosan Vina, the Quality Assurance Division or QAD is responsible for ensuring quality and they play an important role in making sure that the products of Doosan Vina are a brand that is well respected around the globe. The three departments and primary roles for QAD are Quality Assurance or QA, Quality Control or QC and Non Destructive Examination or NDE. The divi-sion is divided into seven departments with 13 sec-tions and a total of 197 employees.

Quality Control - QC

Non Destructive Examination

Quality Control has five departments and six sec-tions. The departments are: QC Boiler, QC MHS, QC HRSG, QC WATER and QC CPE, all have one sec-tion except MHS which has two. QC has 113 members responsible for ensuring that the compa-ny’s products are always the best. QC’s duties involve controlling the entire pro-duction process, so they must see that the proce-dures, guidelines and codes specified by custom-ers and ASME, ISO 9001 and others are strictly and ardently applied.

To do this they follow a basic check list that includes checking: The material, The fit, The welds, The heat treat-ments, The Chemical composition/hardness. They then perform a final general examina-

tion before products move on to Painting where they check the Shot blasting, Paint specifications and finally, they check the Packing & Shipping be-fore products are exported Some of the high tech equipment they use to

Nondestruc-tive Examina-tion or NDE is the third de-partment in QAD and as the name implies they check

for defects at each stage in the production process with-out destroy-ing the prod-uct. The NDE d e p a r t m e n t consists of 67 members that are divided into four sections: NDE Boiler, NDE HRSG/MHS, , NDE Water and NDE CPE Section.

To uncover defects with-out destroy-ing the prod-uct they use a variety of cutt ing-edge methodology. To check welds they have five

main methods: Radiographic Testing or RT, Ultrasonic Test or UT, Magnetic Test, Penetration Testing or PT and Visual Testing or VT.

ment and prevention programs like: the Doosan Vina Quality Development, Qual-ity Keeper and Qual-ity Safety Day. The final section in the QA department is the Laboratory. The lab has seven members who per-form a variety of tests on material as it arrives at the company. This is to assure that the material meets the project’s designated specifications. The lab uses state-of-the-art equipment and technology to check the properties of the material such as tensile strength, bend-ability, impact resistance, hardness and much more before any material is approved for production.

Any detected deficiencies are immediately reported in Inspection Reports. In addition to the above inspections, NDE is also responsible for training and issuing reports on NDE’s compliance with procedures in accordance with reg-ulations and calibration as well as monitoring and checking radioactive levels at the company.

“Quality – Our C o m m i t m e n t and Belief” is the slogan which QAD uses as a rally-ing chant each

morning. This is to ensure that the whole team starts the day with a clear idea of the mission ahead, the vi-sion of QAD and that the “Made in Vietnam” products of Doosan Vina represent each employee, the com-pany and Vietnam!

Quality Assurance - QA The Quality A s s u r a n c e department has 17 mem-bers and three sec-tions who are responsi-ble for assur-ing the qual-

ity of our products. QA’s three sections are: Quality Assurance, Quality Management and the Laboratory. This key department is responsible for establishing, implementing and managing the company’s Quality Management Sys- tem Manual which was c o m p i l e d and based on the basic requirements of ISO 9001 and

ASME standards. QA is also responsible for im-plementing the internal qual-ity audit and the twice per year self-assessment for pro-duction departments. Every six months, the Inter-

nal Audit board goes to each department/shop to review

procedures that may affect the quality of products and check for errors in the reporting, analyzing and prevention practices being employed by staff in production. If anything is found to be askew QA immediately provides guidance to resolve the is-sue and monitors compliance. In addition, the QA section is also responsible for preparing the quality index when customers come to survey Doosan Vina’s and are considering sign-ing contracts for our products or services. Another important group in the QA department is the Quality Management section. This section analyzes and makes recommendations for improv-ing the quality of products as well as suggesting strategies to reach Doosan Vina’s annual quality target. In addition to these key functions they also manage the department budget and help orient new QAD staff. Some of QAD’s reports are: the Monthly Quality Analysis, Substandard Quality Data and the Annu-al Quality Management Systems Planning report. They are also responsible for the quality improve-

carry out the tests are the: Sokkia Total Station, Ultra-sonic Hardness Tester and a Paint tester that checks the paints hardness, thickness and integrity. It even checks to be sure specifications are met uniformly across angles and in corners. The discrepancies discovered during the quality control process are detailed in a report that describes the root cause of the problem, the solutions imple-mented to overcome the problem and procedures to prevent reoccurrence.

HRD turns plans into reality

TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

The Human Resource Development Department entered the year with an aggres-sive and ambitious training schedule. To their credit they have already finished nearly two thirds of their stated plans and since January HRD has averaged two

training classes every month that has produced more than 800 turns of training.

training participants learned can expand and customize the functions of AutoCAD and understand how to access AutoCad data while learning how to change, create, de-lete, add information to a drawing and perform design automation. This software is used by our engineers daily and the four day course was designed to help them better use all of the many Autolisp features. The course was lead by Nguyen Van Thanh, an engineer from the Structural Steel Design Department.

Excel is a basic office applications that most office staff use, but most find it difficult to utilize all of its fea-tures. To remedy this an intensive course was launched and held for employees across the complex. The course was taught by Pham Thi Minh

Tuong, a supervisor in IT and it has helped with issues such as formatting, filtering, statistical data, charting and

printing. If anyone is interested in expanding thier knowl-edge of excel, please contact Hoang Van (Ext 1318) to register for the next course. Language is the ba-sis of communication and in addition to improving Enlish and Korean skills Hang Ha Ryu, CEO & General Director announced that we were to em-bark on a Vietnamese course for Koreans. This is because the work force in the factories is Vietnamese and it is difficult for them to understand directions in English, so a Vietnamese course for Korean was seen as a next logical step in the evolution of the company. The course will run for three months, betweem July and October 2013. There are 57 Koreans spread over four classes.

Teachers for the course were brought in from Hoang Anh Language Center and are alternated with com-pany staff that are bilingual. The classes are held on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 6:30 AM to 8:00 AM. Students will be given a mid-term test and final test so that HRD can evaluate progress and decide on the next stage of the program. Orientation is one of the regular training programs that helps new recruits to intergrate into company’s environment quickly, to understand about company’s history, organizational structure, operation field, vi-sion, mission, development orientation, core value clearly of the Doosan group in general and Doosan

Vina in particular in order to give themself long term and short term vision appropriately. The orientation contents were led by internal teachers who had had practical experience with closer communication methods. Besides, the course had exchange, interaction between instructors and audiences to help new recruits memorize information easily. This course is considered as the first basic training course for new recruits. During the working time at Doosan, they will have many opportunities to join in intensive training courses which are led by leading experts.

“Leading effective and professional meet-ings” is an intregal com-munication channel for the managers and to help improve skills in this critical area training was started for 87 mid-dle managers. The three day course for section managers and higher took place

between June 24 and June 26. An outside expert, Le Duy Quang, from Ho Chi Minh’s SRI Corporate Training Center was brought in to see that this skill was handled professionally and throughly. Le combined practi-cal experience with discussions and role playing to give every-one a chance to improve their meetings so that information is delivered accurately and in an interesting manner.

The course is but one of several leadership courses that will continue throughout 2013. Effective Presentation is indispensable and because of it’s importance it is a focus of HRD’s training. The course aims to prepare our 87 middle managers to make effective and interesting presentations. Divided into three classes Ly Ngoc Tuyen, a teacher/con-sultant from Viet Duc International Research & Training German Vi-etnam Center in Ho Chi Minh City taught the basics of effective pres-entations and through a series of lectures on theory, body language, voice projection, and role playing.
