a new coach at the helm and a renewed enthusiasm for the year ahead. The Red Dragons had a large nucleus of experienced players returning while also adding some much needed depth to its bench. After beginning the season 2-4, Oneonta ran off nine straight wins including six consecutive in the SUNYAC, putting its record at 11-4 entering its first showdown with Cortland, who was in first place in the East. Oneonta lost the game despite leading at halftime,

as Cortland had a hot-shooting second half in taking a 63-51 win. Oneonta continued to play well during the final month of the regular season only losing two more games to finish the regular season 18-7 overall and 12-4 in the SUNYAC. After all the tiebreakers were settled, the Red Dragons earned the third seed for the conference tournament and drew Geneseo in the SUNYAC tournament quarterfinals. Against Geneseo, Oneonta showed some resiliency in overcoming a 14-point second half deficit en route to a 59-54 win to advance into the semifinals against Cortland. Juniors Shannon Weir (Milford/Milford) and Amanda Mc Dowell (Otisville/Minisink Valley) led Oneonta with 20 and 15 points respectively. In the SUNYAC semifinals against Cortland, Oneonta made a tremendous comeback in the last two minutes of the game, but fell short 67-65. Oneonta had three players in double figures including Weir and Christi Podgorski (Schenectady/Guilderland), who each had 13 points, and classmate Casey Snyder (Colonie/Colonie), who scored 12 points. Oneonta was selected to play in, and host, the ECAC Upstate New York Tournament. The semifinals turned into an all SUNYAC event as Cortland, Potsdam and Oswego all advanced. Oneonta made it past Potsdam in the semifinals, but ran into Cortland for a fourth time to no avail, falling in the championship game 65-53. Sophomore Sara Chrystie (Oxford/Oxford) was a second team All-Conference selection for Oneonta after leading the team in scoring.

Men’s Basketball (12-14)

The 2007-08 men’s basketball season had its ups-and-downs, but overall, they continued to build on the last few years with regards to the overall talent level within the program. Oneonta began the season 4-4 including an 80-69 win against Hartwick to begin the month of December. Against Hartwick, Oneonta had five players in double figures led by senior Eljawon Arrington (Schenectady/Schenectady), who had 14 points. The win against the Hawks avenged last year’s defeat at home for the Red Dragons. Oneonta closed out the first semester by grabbing a pair of wins down in Greensboro, N.C. They defeated the hosts 71-60 and then defeated Averett 82-79 in overtime. Sophomore

Michael Grimes (Albany/Catholic Central) came off the bench to score 19 points and grab 10 boards in leading Oneonta to its victory against Averett. Oneonta began the second semester strong winning six of its first eight games including a weekend sweep of Buffalo State and Fredonia at home in the middle of the month. Unfortunately, the Red Dragons couldn’t ride the momentum to the end of the regular season. Oneonta lost seven of its final nine games in the regular season to finish 12-13 overall. They did, however, qualify for the SUNYAC tournament with its 7-9 conference record, drawing the No. 7 seed. In the SUNYAC tournament quarterfinals, Oneonta’s season came to an end with a 77-70 loss at Brockport. Despite four players in double figures in the game, Oneonta was out rebounded 42-27 including 11-5 off the offensive glass. Senior Bobby Fisk (Coeymans/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) led the team in scoring averaging 15 points per game. His season performance earned him Honorable Mention honors for the All-Conference Team.

Wrestling (11-5)

The Oneonta State wrestling team put together its fourth straight, double-digit winning season under coach Duane Ritter culminating in a second consecutive year with an All-American wrestler. Senior Trevor Hiffa (Holland Patent/Holland Patent) became the program’s fourth two-time All-American when he placed fourth at the NCAA championships. Oneonta opened its season by participating in the King’s Tournament, hosting its own Invitational and competing in the Petrofes Tournament at Messiah. The Red Dragons placed 3rd, 4th and 8th respectively in the three tournaments bringing home two individual titles from the season-opening tournament at King’s. Oneonta opened its dual-meet season by sweeping a pair of quads to start the year 6-0, which gave them a top-25 national ranking. They continued their winning ways in early January by winning three of four duals at the North/South Duals hosted by Ursinus before going back there to claim the team title at the Brute/Adidas Tournament. Hiffa along with sophomore Wala Canario (Mastic/William Floyd) took home individual titles to lead the way for the Red Dragons. The last big in-season tournament for Oneonta was the New York State Collegiate Tournament hosted by the University

of Buffalo. The Red Dragons finished ninth overall as a team and had four individuals earn All-State honors. Hiffa was the highest place-finisher in second at 285 lbs. Junior Mike Hamilton (Yephank/Longwood) and sophomore Josh Wake (Delhi/Delaware Academy) placed seventh and fifth respectively at 174 lbs. while sophomore Geoff Rosa (Delhi/Delaware Academy) was seventh at 157 lbs. to round out the foursome. Oneonta ended the season by hosting the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference tournament, which is the NCAA qualifying event for the eight member schools. The Red Dragons finished fifth overall and had one champion, which was Hiffa at 285 lbs. Hiffa was seeded No. 1 in his weight class for the NCAA championships, but lost his opening match, putting him in the consolation bracket. He wrestled his way all the way back to the third place match before being defeated to finish fourth and earn All-American honors.

Swimming & Diving: Men (4-6), Women (4-6)

The men’s and women’s swim program had another record-setting season as many individuals replaced school records on both sides. Both teams had a good mix of experience and youth in 2007-08 as they looked to move up in the final SUNYAC standings at the championship meet. Highlights for this winter included both squads capturing the team titles at the North Country Invitational hosted by Potsdam along with the entire men’s roster qualifying for the SUNYAC meet

for the first time under coach Schuler. At the North Country Invitational the men were led by sophomore Joe Farrell (Long Beach/Long Beach) and senior Peter Millspaugh (Pine Bush/Pine Bush). Farrell won the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle events while Millspaugh won the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. For the women at North Country, junior Ashlee Tocheny (Johnson City/Johnson City) was a double-winner for Oneonta in both diving events. Senior Danielle Ulanowski (Croton-on-Hudson), junior Alicia Ellis (Springville/Springville), sophomore Michelle Sano (Albany/Albany) and freshman Melissa Ng (Farmingdale/Half Hollow Hills East) all won one event each at North Country. Both teams participated in the ECAC winter meet at Nassau County Aquatics Center to end the first semester. The men finished 12th overall while the women were ninth. At the season-ending SUNYAC meet the women placed sixth and the men seventh overall. Farrell was the top performer on

the men’s side with three top-10 finishes in individual events. He was 10th in the 100 free, 6th in the 200 free and 9th in the 500 free. The women had four individuals finish in the top-10 in their respective events led by Ellis, Tocheny and Ulanowski, who placed in the top-10 in two events each. Sano was the fourth with an eighth place finish in the 100 backstroke.

Dragon 5 Tales

As the Oneonta State Athletic Department completes its first complete academic year of a new era with Tracey Ranieri as our Athletic Director, many changes have occurred, however one thing remains constant; the amount of community service hours that our student-athletes dedicate to giving back to the College and the City of Oneonta communities. The mission statement of our athletic department reads as such:

“The mission of the Department of Athletics is to develop exemplary scholar-athletes: individuals who strive for competitive excellence, academic achievement, and a commitment to service. Intercollegiate athletics is sponsored as an educationally purposeful activity which embraces and instills positive ideals. The principles of excellence, integrity, good sportsmanship, and competition guide student-athletes and department members in their efforts to represent themselves, the Athletic Department, and the College at all times.”

Since the beginning of the 2007 -2008 academic year, our athletic teams have participated in approximately 70 community services projects incorporating the very core of the department mission statement. Developing student-athletes who understand that they are role models who represent our department at all times is a CHAMPS LifeSkills component that each coach strives to instill in their teams everyday.

Wrestling coach Duane Ritter and his team have contributed to 14 service projects including skills clinics that cater to both elementary and high school students and peer tutoring in three different school districts in the area. Their most notable community service event is their participation in the annual Ricky J. Parisian Pit Run where 40 members raised $2200.00. Women’s basketball and field hockey have instituted community service projects at the Oneonta School District Center Street elementary school. Field Hockey adopted Mrs. Spaulding’s 4th grade class in which weekly they visit the classroom to work on three community projects; and women’s basketball visits three classrooms weekly to read books to the students or to help out in whatever activity the teacher might be doing in their class. Women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s and men’s swimming and diving, volleyball and baseball have all coordinated skills clinics to the community girls and boys in various locations around the area; and all 43 members of the men’s lacrosse team wrote letters for the Up ‘til Dawn Letter Writing event that solicits donations for the March of Dimes. Each player on the men’s soccer team has been donating two full Saturday’s this year to building homes for the local Habitat for Humanity project. The women’s and men’s tennis teams, cross country and track and field teams, women’s lacrosse and softball teams all joined in to make this year’s SUNYAC Leaf Raking project a success as over twenty city properties of elderly residents were raked. This spring the women’s teams of volleyball, soccer, softball, lacrosse and field hockey shared the knowledge of their sports in the annual Girl Scouts Day on January 26 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm in the Alumni Field House, Dewar Arena. Every 25 minutes teams of 20 Girl Scouts rotated to five courts to be taught the basics of each collegiate sport as well as karate and cheerleading. For most of the participants it was their first introduction to lacrosse and field hockey, sports not normally taught in their schools physical educational programs. Saturday, February 9th saw the seventh consecutive year that the American Heart Association has held their Heart Run/Walk in the Alumni Field House. Coordinated by Athletic Director Tracey Ranieri, the teams of women’s and men’s tennis, volleyball, wrestling, softball, women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse raised $1600.00 towards the total amount of $26,000.00, the highest amount raised to date! On March 14th, the teams of women’s and men’s swimming and diving, volleyball, women’s basketball and field hockey participated in the college’s first ever American Cancer Society Relay for Life to raise money for the disease that has touched all of our lives in some way. 890 people from participating student groups of Oneonta State and Hartwick College raised $64,834.00. The floor of the Dewar Arena was sprinkled with sleeping bags, blankets and pillows as hundreds of students prepared to stay up all night walking for the cause. As you can see, many, many hours are devoted to our student-athletes giving back to the community in so many various ways. The lives of people of all ages that are touched by student-athletes and coaches generosity of knowing that they are making a difference is one of the most rewarding aspects of being involved in Oneonta State Athletics as we strive to uphold the mission statement of the department.
