Women’s Soccer Wins SUNYAC TitleMen’s Soccer reaches ECAC Tournament for second straight year

D R A G O N T A L E SVol 9, No. 1Fall 2007Official Newsletter of Oneonta State Athletics

The fall season ended a bit sooner than it had in the past despite two teams qualifying for the postseason. The men’s soccer team was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Upstate tournament while the women’s soccer team lost in its first round NCAA game. Senior Alex Grout (Clifton Park) was a standout for the men’s cross country team this fall while the duo of Amberlyn Mattice (Solvay) and Celia Alterio (Amherst) led the women’s team as rookies. The women’s tennis and field hockey teams put together winning fall seasons while volleyball finished just below .500.

Women’s Soccer (17-4-1)

The women’s soccer team captured its eighth SUNYAC title in the last nine years this fall while qualifying for its ninth straight NCAA tournament. Along the way they also eclipsed 100 games without a conference loss on Sep. 29 with a 4-1 road win against Geneseo. The streak actually reached 101

games, but ended with a 4-0 loss at Plattsburgh. The streak is the longest in NCAA history for both men’s and women’s soccer at all levels. The season began on the road at Messiah with a 2-1 loss on Aug. 31. The Red Dragons then ran off 11 straight wins before losing to Plattsburgh. The winning streak included seven wins by shutout as Oneonta outscored its opponents 50-7. The streak also included the Red Dragons winning

its sixth Mayor’s Cup title. Oneonta went 6-3-1 over its final 10 games of the season including the NCAA tournament. Oneonta’s wins included Morrisville, SUNYIT, New Paltz and Misericordia all via the shutout.

The other two wins for Oneonta came in the SUNYAC tournament where the Red Dragons avenged its loss to Plattsburgh by beating them 2-0 in the semifinals. In the championship, Oneonta overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit against Cortland and won 3-1 going away. Oneonta had to travel for its NCAA game this year as they were matched against Endicott College, the winner of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, in a game played at Western Connecticut State University. All the goals in the game were scored in the second half where the Red Dragons fell short 2-1. Oneonta fell behind 2-0 before senior Mary Velan (Stamford) cut the lead in half with a goal in the 66th minute. The loss for the Red Dragons marked the first time they had lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament since 2001. The highlight for Oneonta in 2007 came from Velan, who became the program’s all-time leading scorer. She broke first-year head coach, Liz McGrail’s, records for goals, assists and points. Velan capped a stellar four-year career with 71 goals, 27 assists and 169 points. She also was selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Year for a second consecutive season.

Men’s Soccer (14-6-0)

The men’s soccer team followed up a successful 2006 season with another in 2007 winning 14 games and earning a second straight ECAC birth. They also went 11-0 against SUNYAC competition in its final season of reclassification. Next year the Red Dragons will be eligible for

Mary Velan

both the conference and NCAA tournaments. Oneonta started the season dropping four of its first six games including a pair of games at the first Div. III men’s Mayor’s Cup. The Red Dragons opened the season with a 5-0 shutout victory against Farmingdale. They then lost its next three games before defeating Oswego 2-0 to open its SUNYAC schedule of games. Oneonta fell at home to St. John Fisher 2-1 before winning 11 straight games including its final 10

SUNYAC contests. The string was broken at Roberts Wesleyan in the next to last regular season game. The Red Dragons won its final regular season game at Rensselaer 2-1 in overtime and earned the top spot for the ECAC tournament. Oneonta’s season ended in its tournament opener against Rensselaer as they upset the Red Dragons 2-0. The Red Hawks scored early and made it stand up en route to being the eventual champion of the tournament. Season highlights for Oneonta included senior Keith Manscuk (Rochester) breaking the all-time points mark while tying the career goals record, both of which stood for nearly 30 years. The other highlight for the Red Dragons was freshman Kyle Hoffer (Bardonia) being selected as the SUNYAC Rookie of the Year. In three seasons with Oneonta, Manscuk scored 50 goals and had 24 assists for 124 points. He was also a first team All-Conference selection this fall after leading the team in scoring with 14 goals, seven assists and 35 points. Hoffer made an immediate impact as a starter in 2007. He started all 20 games and was second on the team in scoring with eight goals and five assists for 21 points.

Cross Country

With many new faces, especially on the women’s side, the cross country teams performed quite well in 2007. When it was finally over, the Red Dragons had a couple of All-Conference performers and an All-Region performer to talk about. On the men’s side, the Red Dragons were led by Grout, junior Marty Nicholson (Syracuse) and three underclassmen, sophomore Nick Pampena (Kings Park) and freshmen Frank Pfaffenberger (Chester) and Tim Greenberg

(Oneonta). These five individuals led the Red Dragons to a third place finish at the SUNYAC championship meet, which was its best finish in 40 years. Grout earned All-SUNYAC second team honors after placing 12th overall at the championships. He would also earn All-ECAC honors with a third place finish at that championship

Keith Manscuk

and, after placing 26th at the NCAA Atlantic Region meet, earned All-Region honors. Sophomore Mattice and freshman Alterio were the leaders for the women in 2007. The two ran 1-2 for the Red Dragons all season long, which helped Oneonta compete at a higher level during the season. Mattice was the overall winner at both the Hartwick dual and the Oneonta State Airfield Invitational in consecutive weeks in September. She was the Runner of the Week in the SUNYAC once during the fall and earned All-SUNYAC second team honors after placing 13th at the conference championship meet.

Women’s Tennis (10-3 Dual record)

The women’s tennis team had a strong fall season in 2007 that culminated with a fifth place finish at the SUNYAC championship. After graduating its top two singles players, the Red Dragons filled the lineup with young returnees as well as some new faces, which bodes well for the future. Oneonta won its first four matches

of the fall including a 9-0 sweep of Cortland for the third win of the season. The first two wins of the fall came on the road against Potsdam and Plattsburgh.

Oneonta then dropped a pair of matches including a tough 5-4 decision to Brockport at home before winning six more matches in a row. The regular season ended with an 8-1 loss at New Paltz prior to the SUNYAC tournament.

In the SUNYAC tournament, the Red Dragons had two individuals

and two doubles teams advance as far as the semifinals. Oneonta scored a total of 10 points spread out amongst all the singles and doubles slots in the lineup. Sophomore Dana Kuroski (East Quogue) and freshman Leann Shaw (Oneonta) made it to the semifinals at third and fourth singles respectively before falling in straight sets. Kuroski and Shaw also advanced to the semifinals in doubles with their respective partners before falling. Classmate Victoria Shannon (Huntington) was Kuroski’s partner while Shaw paired with classmate Ashley Sears (Poughkeepsie). Shannon was the leader with 10 wins in singles through the fall season while Shannon and Kuroski led the team with 10 wins in doubles.

in 2007 with a new coach. The Red Dragons also were 4-2 in the SUNYAC, which was good enough to be tied for second place overall. Oneonta opened the season with a split of a pair of games at the St. Lawrence Classic. The Red Dragons fell in overtime to the hosts 4-3 before bouncing back big 5-0 against Neumann the next day. Freshman Ainsley Stoll (Williamsville) led Oneonta with a pair of goals and an assist over the two games. Sophomore Ashley Valentine (Cortlandt Manor) added a pair of goals for Oneonta during the weekend. Oneonta dropped three of its next four games including a 1-0 overtime loss at Geneseo to open its SUNYAC schedule. The team got on a bit of roll after the loss to Geneseo winning four of its next five. Three of the wins came at the expense of SUNYAC foes, New Paltz, Oswego and Brockport. The fourth win was a 2-1 overtime game at Hartwick, which marked the first time the Red Dragons, had beaten Hartwick since 1993. The final eight games were a split including the final two games, which were wins, to get Oneonta to 10-9. The final two games were home wins against Rochester, 3-0, and Hamilton, 6-2. Stoll finished the season with 29 points on 13 goals and three assists to lead the team. She earned first team All-Conference honors as a rookie. Sophomore Kathryn Kubaryk (Warrensburg), who led the team in scoring last year, was second on the team with 11 goals and one assist for 23 points despite missing the first three games of the season. She was a first team All-Conference selection as well joining Stoll and senior Samantha Merritt (Dover, NH).

Volleyball (18-21)

The volleyball team had high hopes of returning to the postseason as it entered the 2007 season. The squad had five seniors and a host of experienced players that were with the team in 2006 when the team qualified for the ECAC tournament. The season began at home, as it has for nearly a decade,

with the Red Dragon Invitational. Oneonta hosted eight other schools for the two-day event and came away with a solid 3-1 record. The Red Dragon won its two matches on the first day against Oswego and St. Lawrence before splitting a pair during the final day of competition, defeating FDU-Madison and falling to Scranton. During the season, Oneonta never was able to put together a long winning streak, but on the other side of the coin, never suffered through any long losing streaks. The Red Dragons longest winning streak was three while its longest losing skid was four matches, which actually came during one weekend invitational. Individually, senior Sarah Zimmermann (Queensbury) was Oneonta’s lone representative on both the All-Conference and All-State team. She had a solid all-around season with 178 kills, 78 assists, 30 serving aces and 83 blocks. Senior Morgan Brooks (Beaver Dams) led the team with 239 kills while classmate Katie Darcangelo (Corning) led the team with 668 digs. Junior Jess Ptasnick (Wingdale) led Oneonta in both assists (678) and aces (64) while classmate Denise Hardy

CHAMPS/SAAC News

Dragon 5 Tales

Fall 2007 began with new leadership in our Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) as officer re-elections occurred; and a new advisor, Athletics Director Tracey Ranieri took the helm. Morgan Brooks (Volleyball) and Erica Krisak (Lacrosse) were elected Co-Presidents; Chris Duffy (Lacrosse) was elected Vice-President and Allison Pearlman (Tennis) was elected as Secretary.

With new leadership and fresh perspectives, the first order of business was to discuss changes to the SAAC Constitution that was introduced in the Spring semester and vote upon changes to the Bylaws that needed to be updated to support the college mission. As passage of the new Bylaws occurred, the group began planning a skit based program for freshman titled “Top 10 Things You Must Know as a Freshman Student Athlete” that occurred on October 3rd at 8:00 pm. The field house bleachers were packed for the program that focused on academic accountability, campus resources such as CADE, library and academic advising, residence hall life, the health and counseling center, I.D. card uses, safety tips, going out downtown and finally, representing Oneonta State Athletics with honor, integrity and character at all times!

Next, at the November 6th meeting, the group enjoyed a workshop titled Etiquette for Success by Tracey Ranieri to help prepare our student-athlete leaders to gain the competitive edge when seeking professional employment after graduation. On Tuesday, December 4th, Eva Vega returned to campus to speak with the coaching staff in their morning staff meeting; and later to SAAC as she presented a program on “Interrupting Bias Language”. Since leaving Oneonta State and forming her own company Eva Vega Diversity, Eva has spoken nationally to students, faculty, and staff about diversity, inclusion, multicultural education, and leadership development to help raise awareness of language bias and create more learning opportunities for individuals to grow and thrive in a diverse world.

As Facebook, Myspace and other social internet websites continue to be a “hot topic” on campus, the Spring 2008 semester will unveil a new athletics Facebook account named “Red Dragons” that will be maintained and operated by the officers of SAAC. Created as a means to communicate positively with student-athletes, information regarding the “Points System Team Competition” created by Co-President Morgan Brooks after her NCAA Leadership Conference experience in May will be found here as well as continuous updates to team scores and other student athlete related information!

As the semester rolled to an end, the final SAAC meeting was a commemoration of each representative’s backgrounds as they enjoyed a “Diversity Dinner”, a potluck celebration of their favorite food of the Holiday season!

CHAMPS programming got under way with National Hazing Prevention Week, September 24 – September 28. On Monday, CHAMPS and Greek Life co-sponsored the inaugural Greek/Athlete Leader Mixer in the Hunt Union Ballroom as an activity to promote communication and understanding within the two groups. A buffet dinner was served to 54 leaders of each athletic team, sorority and fraternity who mixed themselves up at each table to get to know one another before the activity of the night was introduced. After dinner, swimming and diving coach Chris Schuler-Ghiorse facilitated a game of Blackout Bingo in which individuals had to get a signature from a member of each organization or team. Once each square was completely filled in, the group circled around and shared aspects of each other that they might not have previously known. A common recurring theme throughout was the amount of community service hours everyone completed per semester.

On Tuesday Brian Strahine, currently a residence hall director at the University of Tennessee, presented to an audience of approximately 600 student-athletes, Greeks and general student body his own personal story of Broken Promises – Hazing Exposed. As a freshman football player and fraternity pledge at an Ivy League university, Brian experienced some of the most egregious emotional and physical hazing. In his program, Brian tells his story of the disappointment that he experienced as a result of so many “broken promises.” Interlaced with his story were pictures of hazing episodes that have occurred on campuses across the country involving athletic teams, sororities, and fraternities that invoked gasps from some students in the audience because of their graphic nature. On Wednesday, new men’s lacrosse coach Dan Mahar and former track and field athlete Caitlyn Fanning represented athletics at the noon hour Hazing Panel Discussion held in the Butternut room at Hunt Union. Questions were fielded by the panel that sought to give more insight into how hazing is perceived on campus.

Commitment to Personal Development - to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, leadership, personal growth and decision-making skills programming is an important component of CHAMPS which is why David Coleman aka The Dating Doctor was asked back to campus this fall to deliver his engaging, often comedic presentation on dating and relationship questions. Co-sponsored by CHAMPS and PAIRS, David spoke to a diverse crowd at the Hunt Union Ballroom first asking students if they have seen the movie Hitch starring Will Smith. As the majority of the hands went up in the room, students then found out that the movie is based upon David Coleman’s life and that he is the original Hitch!! Throughout his presentation he answered questions such as: healthy versus unhealthy relationships; why do we stay in relationships; and why do we repeat bad relationships? He also entertained the group with the best “pick-up” lines he has heard and challenged the group to beat him by telling him one he didn’t know.

On Monday, October 15, Brent Scarpo presented Last Call, The Ultimate Campus Party to kick-off Oksoberfest – Alcohol Awareness Week. The presentation was very interactive asking students to role play situations, and perhaps the most riveting aspect was when three very brave women were asked on stage to explain what happened to them after being arrested for a DUI or DWI. Often times, hearing another person’s story has much more of an impact than the presenter himself. Initial feedback from a senior women’s basketball player who has attended the alcohol awareness week speaker program every year, was that “this was the best one I have ever been too!”

The final workshop of the semester was a collaboration with First Year Experience (FYE) director Monica Grau and CHAMPS coordinator Colleen Cashman to provide freshman student-athletes with some tips to “survive” their first finals experience! Guest speakers from campus, Dr. Melissa Fallon, Counseling Center and Dr. Karen Joest, Assistant Professor of Child and Family Studies discussed “Tips on Staying Stress Free” and “What do your professors really expect from you at finals?” The hour long workshop was attended by approximately 35 freshman and sophomore athletes and four coaches who received Oneonta State Athletics deco massagers for attending to help them alleviate any stress they encounter during the end of their semester.

SAAC representatives coordinated their teams to participate in three community service projects this Fall. Approximately 100 student-athletes from 10 teams competed in the 6th Annual Halloween Fun/Run Walk on Monday, October 29th. Over $118.00 was raised that was donated to St. Mary’s Church to benefit their annual Thanksgiving Dinner and 40+ cans of food were donated to the Salvation Army’s food pantry . Winners included John Crosby, Tennis – Best Costume; Chris Sneed, Cross Country – 1st Male Finisher; Kim Solazzo, Field Hockey – 1st Female Finisher; John Sneed, Wrestling – Scariest Costume and Wrestling – Best Team Costume. On Saturday, November 3, the Oneonta State baseball team donated their time and labor to help in a three-year beautification project in the City of Oneonta to plant trees on the streets of the city. A total of 28 players, broken into groups of three and one group of four, planted 27 trees between the hours of 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. at four city street locations. This community service project preceded the 3rd Annual SUNYAC Conference Wide Leaf Raking Day on Sunday, November 4th, in which over 200 student-athletes from the rest of the athletics department and ten coaches and administrators participated! Donations of rakes and leaf bags from Lowes, Hannaford and Home Depot paved the way for over 20 residences to be cleared of leaves across the City of Oneonta. The final community service project for the semester and the 11th year of participation was our Christmas gift giving to the Angel Tree Migrant Workers Children. Eighteen teams were given one to three children to buy gifts for this Christmas allowing 30 children to receive presents to open Christmas morning. The track and field, cross country, and softball teams each raised over $400 for their children’s gifts while the remainder of the teams totals raised amounted to well over $2000! The generosity and selflessness of our student-athletes is overwhelming during the holiday season as they brighten children’s lives across the community.

As our student-athletes continue to succeed in the athletic arena, it is important to remember that Oneonta State student-athletes are a group of dedicated individuals who proudly represent not only their sports but the College at Oneonta. Community service projects, leadership initiatives and educational programming are aspects that involve them and shape them to be successful after graduation. We hope you stay tuned for more news on the happenings of the Oneonta State CHAMPS and SAAC programming and the student-athletes of our college.
