Joe Reed

The spring season had its share of exciting moments again in 2008 with an All-American and two teams qualifying for the ECAC tournament. Junior Joe Reed (Rome) saved his best for last with a pair of runner-up finishes at the NCAA championship meet to earn All-America honors in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. The baseball and softball teams both played in the ECAC tournament while men’s tennis and women’s lacrosse finished the spring with winning records.

Track & Field

The 2008 outdoor season was a bit quieter than it had been in the previous three or four years. A new coach and some nagging injuries kept many athletes on the sidelines or out of action at various points throughout the season. The major highlights this spring came on the men’s side where Reed’s performance at the national meet was the crowning achievement. In addition to Reed’s double at the NCAA meet, he was part of the 4x400-meter relay that successfully defended its crown at the ECAC championship meet. Unfortunately the foursome’s performance fell just short of getting them back to the national meet for a second straight year. was seeded 16th in the 200 and tied for eighth in the 100. He started championship Saturday in lane two for the 100 and raced his way to second in a time of 10.66.

Reed’s 16 points placed

Oneonta State in a tie for 19th in the team standings, its highest place in school history.

Including indoor season, Reed earned a total of four All-American plaques including three as an individual and one as part of the 4x400 relay that placed sixth at the NCAA indoor championships.

Other highlights on the men’s side included senior Alex Grout (Clifton Park) and junior Mike DeVasto (Hastings) earning All-Conference honors at the SUNYAC championship meet. Grout was second in the 1,500 meters while DeVasto was runner-up in the shot put.

On the women’s side Oneonta did earn some medals at the conference championship meet. One relay and one individual came through with second place finishes to score points for the Red Dragons.

Junior Stephanie Gordon (Queensbury) had a personal-best day in finishing second in the discus with a distance of 35.95m (117’-11”). She also placed seventh in the javelin after never having thrown it in competition prior to the meet. Gordon’s performance in the discus earned her second team All-Conference honors.

The other medalist for Oneonta came in the 4x400 relay with the quartet of junior Janine Sacca (Guilderland), sophomores Amberlyn Mattice (Solvay) and Kristen Stein (Gloversville), and freshman Connie Belkevich (Ticonderoga) ran a time of 4:02.73, which placed them second overall.

The final highlight for Oneonta came at the ECAC championship meet when freshman Celia Alterio (Amherst) placed seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Baseball (25-18)

The baseball team had another solid season that included a late season run that got them into the SUNYAC tournament along with another ECAC berth. The Red Dragons overcame weather and cancellations and a predominantly road schedule to finish seven games above .500 at 25-18. After a season-opening 17-2 win against Baruch in Cocoa Beach, Fla., Oneonta dropped three straight before bouncing back with three consecutive wins. The Red Dragons completed its southern trip

Dragon 2 Tales(continued pg. 3, column 1)

with a pair of wins to head back north with a 6-4 record. Oneonta got off to a very rough start when they returned to New York. Postponements and road trips did not treat the Red Dragons too kindly as they dropped five of its first eight games including its first two SUNYAC contests. During the opening stretch, while the pitching staff was performing the Oneonta bats were struggling. In the eight games, the Red Dragons managed only 15 runs while being shutout three times. It appeared that maybe the team might be coming alive after a doubleheader split with Brockport and a sweep of St. John Fisher, but four straight losses had Oneonta sitting at 12-14 overall and in last place in the SUNYAC. As has been the case in year’s past, the Red Dragons came together and rebounded. Starting with a doubleheader sweep of Oswego, Oneonta ran off 11 straight wins including eight consecutive in the conference to raise its overall record at 23-14, but more importantly, 9-5 in the SUNYAC and a lock on second place entering the conference tournament. In the conference tournament, Oneonta would open with a 3-2 win against Brockport, but they would drop its next game to top-seeded Cortland 13-4. In the elimination game, Brockport pounded Oneonta pitching for 17 hits en route to a 10-7 win. With its 24-16 record overall, Oneonta would earn an ECAC tournament spot, which they would end up hosting despite being the number two seed in the four-team, double elimination bracket. An ECAC title just wasn’t in the cards this spring with the Red Dragons being eliminated on the second day of the tournament with a 3-1 loss to Brockport. Oneonta had opened with a 4-3 loss to Brockport before defeating top-seeded RIT 14-6 setting up the sixth meeting of the 2008 season with the Golden Eagles. Junior Ryan Myers (Clifton Park) led the Oneonta offense in 2008 hitting .338 with a team-leading 30 runs, 16 doubles, 52 hits and 47 runs batted in. Myers performance earned him ABCA/Rawlings second team All-Region honors. Top pitchers this spring included junior Steve Juedes (Schenectady), senior Ryan Cole (Mahopac) and freshman Dave Filak (Burnt Hills). Juedes finished the season with a 5-3 record while leading the team with a 2.11 ERA and three complete games. Cole finished 5-2 this spring with a 3.71 ERA in seven starts. Filak had a tremendous first season with Oneonta garnering SUNYAC and ECAC Upstate Rookie of the Year honors, both firsts for the program. Filak finished the season 4-3 and was second on the team with 58 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched.

Women’s Lacrosse (10-7)

The women’s lacrosse team had a bit of uncertainty as it entered the 2008 season. A new coach who was hired in January and who was taking on her first collegiate head coaching position along with six seniors, who had varied success during their careers at Oneonta. The enthusiasm of coach Jess Pausewang and the response from the team, especially the younger players seemed to work as the team finished 10-7, which was a one-game improvement from 2007. Oneonta played six close games, four of them wins, to start the 2008 campaign. In the four wins, Oneonta won by a combined eight goals. The two losses were by two goals including one in overtime, which was its first loss of the season. Oneonta went 6-5 over the remainder of the season including a dramatic 11-10 win against coach Pausewang’s alma mater Geneseo. Sophomore Lauren Portnoy (Sea Cliff) and senior Erics Krisak (Syracuse) scored back-to-back just 18 seconds apart in the final 1:06 to lift the Red Dragons to the win. Oneonta followed its win against Geneseo with a convincing 21-12 win against Potsdam to keep its hopes alive for a conference tournament spot. Unfortunately, the Red Dragons would drop its next

two conference games, which eliminated them from contention for the final playoff slot. Junior Brianne Ruzek (Mineola) and freshman Katie O’Toole (Long Beach) finished tied for the team lead in scoring with 48 points each. O’Toole, along with classmate Rosemarie Fazio (Mohegan Lake), were Oneonta’s lone selections to the All-Conference Team, with both players earning first team honors. Fazio led Oneonta with 59 ground balls, 47 draw controls and 38 caused turnovers while also adding 16 goals and two assists to the offense.

Softball (22-21)

Under second-year coach, Liz Wagner, the Red Dragons were able to reach the 20-win plateau for the first time since 2005 while rebounding from an 11-25 2007 season. The team also played in the ECAC tournament for the first time since 2002. The 2008 season began with a trip to Kissimmee, Fla. to participate in the Rebel Games. During its 12-game schedule, the Red Dragons managed to string together three wins on two separate occasions, but ended the trip with a three-game skid to finish 6-6 overall. Oneonta won eight of its first 10 games up north including a 2-1 win against Plattsburgh at home to raise its overall record to 14-8 and 6-2 in the SUNYAC. Over the final two weeks of the season the Red Dragons were up and down. After their win against Plattsburgh the team lost three straight before winning five in a row while also keeping themselves in contention for a spot in the conference tournament. Unfortunately a seven-game losing streak put Oneonta in a tough spot entering the final weekend of the season where they needed to win three of its final six conference games to jump into the final playoff spot.

Oneonta dropped a pair to Brockport before splitting with Geneseo to set up a must sweep of Potsdam on the final day of the regular season. The Red Dragons took the first game of the doubleheader, 8-2, but fell in the second game 6-4. The loss in the second game kept Oneonta out of the SUNYAC tournament.

A new season started when the team was selected to play in the ECAC tournament. The squad hosted Medaille in a first-round game and defeated them 8-1, which advanced them into the double elimination weekend at Union. The Red Dragons didn’t play well enough and was eliminated on the first day with losses to Union and Alfred.

Sophomore Danielle Litz (Schenectady) had a breakout offensive season leading the team with a .379 average. Her performance earned her second team All-Region honors from the NFCA.

A pair of freshman, Bethany Truax (S. Glens Falls) and Shanna Hicks (Marlboro) had tremendous rookie years with Oneonta. Truax was the only Red Dragon named to the All-Conference Team while also being an At-Large selection on the All-Region Team. She finished the season second on the team with a .326 average while leading the team in runs (40), hits (42) home runs (3) while setting the single season mark for stolen bases with 24.

Hicks was the squad’s top hurler putting together a 10-4 season with a 1.88 ERA. She threw two shutouts and struck out 68 batters in 108 innings while holding opponents to a .194 batting average against.

Men’s Lacrosse (7-8)

Weather wreaked havoc on the men’s spring schedule in 2008 as it caused two cancellations for first-year coach Dan Mahar and his Red Dragons. When the team did play there were definite signs of things to come in the future with many young, talented players seeing

ALEX GROUT SELECTED TO USTFCCCA ALL-ACADEMIC TEAMGraduate tops off academic honors for the year

The USTFCCCA announced its 2007-08 All-Academic teams for track & field and Oneonta State recent graduate, Alex

Grout (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) was selected to the Div. III squad. The honor for Grout completes a tremendous athletic and academic career for the Red Dragons as three weeks ago he earned national Academic All-American honors from ESPN the Magazine.

Grout’s academic accomplishments this past year included being selected as the SUNYAC Chancellor’s Award recipient in the sport of cross country while being named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic squad. He was on the SUNYAC All-Academic Team

and Commissioner’s list during his time and, this past spring, he was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, which is the National Student-Athlete Honors Society.

Athletically this past year, Grout was an All-SUNYAC, All-ECAC and All-Region runner in cross country. He smashed the school record for 8,000 meters at the regional meet with a time of 25:29, which placed him 26th overall.

During the indoor track season this past winter he was an All-Conference performer and earned All-American honors with a seventh place finish in the mile at the NCAA Div. III championship meet.

During the outdoor track season this spring he was an All-Conference performer in the 1,500 meters after finishing second at the SUNYAC championship meet.

action and contributing. The team began the season on the seesaw ride of a win-loss-win-loss-win-loss through the first six games. One of its wins was against city rival Hartwick as the two teams matched up for the first time during the regular season since the 2003 season. The previous two times the teams had met were in the semifinals of the 2004 and 2005 ECAC tournament. Sitting at 3-3, Oneonta dropped four straight including its first three games in SUNYAC action. One of the games was a thrilling, but heartbreaking double overtime loss to Geneseo. In the game, Oneonta battled back in the final two quarters from a 10-5 deficit to tie the score at 12 apiece to force the extra periods. Senior Tyler Dunne (Cazenovia) scored the tying goal with three seconds to go in regulation. With its backs against the wall and the hopes of making the conference tournament slim, Oneonta rallied to win its final four games of the season to go from last to fourth in the SUNYAC, which put them into the tournament. The Red Dragons clinched the final playoff spot with a 13-12 overtime win against Brockport in the regular season finale. Dunne was the hero again netting the game-winner with 2:06 remaining in the first sudden-victory period. Unfortunately for Oneonta, they drew top-seeded, and No. 2 in the country, Cortland, in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Cortland jumped out quickly en route to the 18-6 win, which ended Oneonta’s season. Sophomore Scott Weiner (Suffern) finished the season as the leading scorer with 16 goals and 12 assists for 28 points. Dunne, who was a second team All-Conference selection, was second in scoring with 19 goals and seven assists for 26 points.

Men’s Tennis (10-6)

The men’s tennis team completed another winning year in dual matches going 4-1 in the fall and 6-5 during the spring for the final of 10-6. Of the 12 players who finished the spring, Coach Bill May’s squad had one senior and one junior, which bodes well for the upcoming year. The fall season began with a 9-0 win against Oswego before traveling to participate in the Flower City Tournament at Rochester. The Red Dragons defeated RIT and host Rochester with a loss to St. Lawrence sandwiched in the middle to go 2-1 for the weekend. After competing in the ECAC tournament, Oneonta played its final dual match of the fall at home and came away with an 8-1 win against Union. The final competition of the fall was the ITA Regional Tournament at Vassar College. Sophomore Matt Steinhauser (Plainview) led Oneonta advancing to the round of 16 before falling in straight sets. The spring season began with a 7-2 win at Elmira before the team headed south to Florida to play four matches. The Red Dragons ran into stiff competition in the gator state dropping all four matches including three by the score of 9-0. The return to New York proved to be just what the doctor ordered as Oneonta won six of its final matches of the season. The Red Dragons won six straight including three by shutout before dropping its season finale 5-4 to St. Lawrence. Steinhauser finished the year as the leader with 11 singles wins followed by freshman William Sacco (Canandaigua), who had nine. The top double tandem for the year was freshmen Jonathan Dorin (Lynbrook) and Jeremy Goldberg (Scarsdale), who paired together for a 7-4 record.

2008 Fall Season Preview

Men’s Soccer

The Red Dragons will have a huge target on its back entering 2008 after finishing 11-0 in SUNYAC play during its last season of reclassification to Div. III. This year Oneonta will be eligible for the conference tournament after earning back-to-back ECAC berths for the first time since the 1979-80 seasons. Oneonta is coming off a 14-6 2007 campaign, but will have holes to fill left by graduation and one transfer. Gone for the Red Dragons are its top three scorers from a year ago including SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, Kyle Hoffer, who transferred to a Div. I institution. Oneonta’s top returning scorer is sophomore Larry Pestana, who notched four goals and added four assists during his rookie season. Oneonta will return four starters to its midfield and defense groups along with its starting keeper in junior Jonathan Korn. Senior brothers Yan and Yfran Garcia will bolster the defensive unit while classmate Kris Colbert and junior James Hoffman will lead the midfielders. Korn started all 20 games in 2007 and had a 1.08 goals against average while recording nine shutouts.

Women’s Soccer

The women’s soccer team regained its spot atop the SUNYAC last year when they won its eighth conference championship in the last nine years. They also made their ninth straight NCAA tournament appearance in 2007 as they set its sights on reaching double-digits in 2008. Graduated is four-time All-American, Mary Velan, but back is four of the team’s top six scorers from 2007 that will fuel the attack this fall. Senior Sarah Begley led the team in scoring last season with a school-record 50 points. Classmates Christine Marra, Lindsey Brechbiel and Beth Cherry were fourth, fifth and sixth respectively in scoring in 2007. Senior Laura Pierino and junior Melissa VandenBergh will anchor the Red Dragon defense this fall. Pierino will be returning to the starting lineup after having her season cut short a year ago with a knee injury. VandenBergh started all 22 games in the back last season and was the Defensive MVP of the Mayor’s Cup tournament.

Women’s Tennis

The women’s tennis team returns all but one player to a squad that completed an 11-3 record in dual matches for 2007-08. The squad will rely on its returning nucleus of talented players to challenge for the top spot in the SUNYAC. At the top of the lineup, junior Katie Wlodarczyk returns for Oneonta. Last year she went 6-7 overall in singles play and 9-5 in doubles including 8-5 with her regular partner sophomore Emily Shannon. Emily, who played in the second slot, finished 8-6 overall in singles including 6-5 at second singles. Rounding out the top six for Oneonta, who will compete for their spots in the lineup include, senior Allison

Pearlman, juniors Dana Kuroski and Victoria Shannon and sophomore Leann Shaw.

Volleyball

Oneonta will rely on the experience of 11 returning players including a trio of seniors, Denise Hardy, Jess Ptasnick and Caitlin Ross. The Red Dragons will look to improve on its 18-21 record from a year ago that saw them also miss the SUNYAC tournament. Ross and Hardy were third and fifth on the team last season with 219 and 175 kills respectively. Hardy was the team leader in blocks with 91 while Ross added 38 aces. Ptasnick has been a three-year starter at setter for the Red Dragons and led the team in 2007 with 678 assists. Juniors Sarah Petrignani and Christine LaGuardia both reached triple digits in kills. Sophomore Megan Boeltz, whose season was slowed by injuries, had 70 kills and 58 blocks during her rookie campaign as a middle hitter.

Cross Country

Both cross country squads return a solid group of runners as they enter the 2008 fall season. The men will return five of its top 10 runners from a year ago while the women have its two leaders back. Seniors Marty Nicholson and Josh Haverlock will be joined by junior Nick Pampena and sophomores Frank Pfaffenberger and Tim Greenberg as they look to lead a young, talented group of returners and newcomers. Leading the women this fall should be the pair that led them in 2007 with the return of junior Amberlyn Mattice and Celia Alterio. Mattice earned herself second team All-Conference honors last fall after finishing 13th while Alterio nearly missed the honor with a 17th place finish at the championship meet.

Field Hockey

The Red Dragons looked to go on the offensive in 2008 with the return of its three top scorers from 2007. Sophomore Ainsley Stoll, junior Kathryn Kubaryk and senior Somer Shuffield all return for second-year coach, Shelly Behrens. As a rookie, Stoll led the team with 13 goals and three assists for 29 points as she earned first team All-Conference honors. Kubaryk showed no signs of a sophomore jinx as she followed her stellar first season with another strong season posting 23 points despite missing the opening three games of the season. She too was a first team All-SUNYAC selection making it her second straight season on the first team. Shuffield had her best season to date for Oneonta in 2007 with six goals and three assists while being selected to the SUNYAC second team. Returning captains, Marissa Chiapperino and Leslieann Gutchess, round out the Red Dragons group of top returning players.

Oneonta State juniors Janine Sacca (Guilderland) and Yan Garcia (Sloatsburg) have been chosen to participate in this year’s NCAA Leadership Conference held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida during the last week of May. I’m eager to continue my quest to becoming

not only a great student-athlete, but a great student leader.”After attending her conference Sacca had these comments, “The leadership conference was better

than I’d originally expected. It took me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to interact with other student athletes all over the country that I normally would never have been able to have contact with. In the two days we were there, athletes from difference backgrounds bonded in a way I couldn’t have imagined would have happened in such a short time.”

She continued, “I learned not only about ways to be an effective leader on campus but also about myself as an athlete and person. It was an eye-opening experience that I’m thankful to have been a part of. I realized that our athletic department could use the closeness that the students at this conference felt with each other in order to have a much more enriching and meaningful experience as student-athletes at Oneonta State. I’m hoping to be able to share my ideas and what I’ve learned with our athletic community in order to help it thrive.” The NCAA National Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The leadership conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. The conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members of a group.
