Vol 7, No. 1 Fall 2005

The fall season once again proved to be a successful one overall for Oneonta State in 2005. Womenʼs soccer and field hockey earned post season berths while the menʼs soccer team played for the Atlantic Soccer Conference title. The menʼs and womenʼs cross country teams had some tremendous individual performances this fall and the womenʼs tennis team improved by six wins from 2004.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (21-2-2)

The womenʼs soccer team dominated its opponents again this fall en route to its fourth straight 20-win season in 2005. Along the way to playing in its second straight NCAA tournament sectional final they disposed of all of its conference opponents in capturing its seventh straight SUNYAC title.

Early in the season the team set an NCAA all-divisions record for conference games without a loss when they defeated SUNYIT on Sep. 7, 10-0. That win gave them its 73rd game without a loss in the SUNYAC, which broke a tie with Wisconsin Stevens Point, who had a 72-game unbeaten streak end in 2003. The Red Dragons continued the streak through the regular season and the SUNYAC tournament and will enter 2006 with an 84-game unbeaten streak.

The win over SUNYIT also marked another milestone for head coach Tracey Ranieri, who recorded her 200th career

win. At the completion of the 2005 season Ranieri has a career record of 217-79-24 overall, which is a winning percentage of .716.

Oneonta opened its season at Johns Hopkins University to participate in its tournament. In the opener Oneonta defeated Wisconsin Oshkosh 4-0 before falling to the hosts 3-0 on the second day of the tournament.

The loss to the Blue Jays was the last set back for the Red Dragons until Oct. 22 when Oneonta lost to the #1 team in the country, Messiah, 2-1. The only other bump in the road was a 0-0 tie against Emory University in the Mayorʼs Cup tournament.

During the 12-game unbeaten streak Oneonta out scored its opponents 62-4 and included eight straight shutouts from Sep. 17 to Oct. 15. The Red Dragons would finish the season with a program record 87 goals this fall while allowing only 13.

Despite their season ending against Tufts University in the sectional final, Oneonta didnʼt lose another game and finished the season with a seven-game unbeaten streak. The streak included its two wins in the SUNYAC tournament that earned the team its seventh straight NCAA berth.

In the NCAA tournament, Oneonta received a bye into the second round where they hosted first-timer Springfield College. In the game freshmen Sarah Begley (North Chili, NY/Churchville-Chili) and Christine Marra (Thiells, NY/Thiells) each scored a goal to lead the way for the Red Dragons.

In the sectional semifinals Oneonta made the most of its limited opportunities en route to a 3-0 shutout against the University of Rochester. The defensive-minded Yellowjackets held Oneonta to only nine shots, but Oneonta was able to push three by the Rochester keeper.

The season ended for Oneonta in the sectional final

against Tufts in penalty kicks 4-3. The two teams battled to a 1-1 draw through regulation and two overtimes before going to the shoot out. Oneonta had multiple scoring chances in the second half, but were stymied by the Tufts defense. In the shoot out, the Red Dragons went goal-for-goal before missing on its fourth shot. Senior goalkeeper Laura Morcone (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) then made a diving right hand save to keep Oneonta in the game. Unfortunately for the Red Dragons their next attempt would be stopped by the Tufts keeper and the game ended.

Individually, Oneonta had two players register 40 points during the same season for the first time in the programʼs 20-year history. Senior Tricia Jaeger (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and sophomore Mary Velan (Stamford, NY/Stamford) topped the 40-point barrier with 44 and 45 points respectively. Jaeger set a single season record for goals with 20 while Velan tied the single season record for points.

CROSS COUNTRY

The menʼs and womenʼs cross country teams had solid overall seasons in 2005, although not reflected in its performance at the conference championship meet. Both teams had multiple individuals run faster times throughout the season, but neither

team was able to crack the top five in the conference that included eventual NCAA Div. III national champion Geneseo on the womenʼs side. The season began in the town of Oneonta at Fortin Park with the O-State Airfield Invitational. Both teams placed second overall in the team standings with junior Kaitlin OʼSullivan (Syracuse, NY/Westhill) winning the womenʼs race in a time of 17:00.39.

Both teams would compete in eight events in 2005 including the ECAC meet and the NCAA Atlantic Regional meet. At the ECAC meet the men had a top-10 finish at sixth overall with a second place individually by junior Ryan Wells (Chittenango, NY/Chittenango).

Both Wells and OʼSullivan emerged this fall as the top runners for their respective teams. Both would earn All-SUNYAC second team honors for their finishes of ninth (Wells) and 15th (OʼSullivan) overall in their races. Wells earned All-ECAC honors for his second place finish at the championship meet while OʼSullivan earned the honor after a seventh place finish. OʼSullivan would go on to become the first female in the history of the womenʼs program to earn All-Region honors after finishing 15th overall in the regional championship meet, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the NCAA meet by one spot.

FIELD HOCKEY (11-9)

The 2005 field hockey season was another winning one for Michele Dombrowski and the Red Dragons. The team finished 11-9 overall and qualified for the ECAC Mid-Atlantic

tournament for a third straight season. The team had trouble finding enough consistency throughout the season that kept them from putting together a long winning streak. The season began with four straight home games that saw the team jump out to a 3-1 start. The only loss was in the

season-opener to St. Lawrence 1-0. The Red Dragons bounced back with consecutive wins against Misericordia, Manhattanville, Muhlenberg and Rensselaer. The Rensselaer win came in Oneontaʼs first road game of the season by the score of 3-2. The game-winner against Rensselaer came from senior Kate Yarmowich (Warrensburg, NY/Warrensburg) with less than 17 minutes to go in the game. Yarmowich would finish the season as the teamʼs

leading scorer with 10 goals and six assists including three game-winning goals. Oneonta dropped its next contest at Geneseo in overtime, which put them at 0-1 to start the SUNYAC portion of the schedule. The Red Dragons rebounded with a pair of conference wins against New Paltz and Oswego to raise its overall record to 6-2. Oneonta went 5-5 over its last 10 games including losses to nationally ranked Skidmore and Cortland.

With an 11-8 record, the Red Dragons were chosen as the eighth seed in the ECAC tournament and was matched against the top-seeded, and nationally ranked, Gettysburg College. Oneonta battled Gettysburg to a 0-0 score at the half, but was hit with three unanswered goals in the second half to end the season.

Following Yarmowich in scoring this season was classmate Rachael Decker (Sherrill, NY/VVS) with 19 points. Decker was a second team All-Conference selection as well as a first team All-Region performer this fall.

MEN’S SOCCER (8-10-2)

The menʼs soccer team completed an 8-10-2 season in 2005, which was highlighted by the team playing in the Atlantic Soccer Conference championship game with a trip to the NCAA Div. I tournament on the line. The menʼs soccer program also celebrated its 50th anniversary this fall and, as part of the events, honored the 1955 soccer team during homecoming weekend. The athletic department also selected a golden anniversary team to commemorate the milestone. The Red Dragons got off to a rocky start losing three of its first four games and settling for a tie in its other contest. The season started with a 2-2 tie at home against Albany before dropping three straight including two games in the 30th Mayorʼs Cup tournament. Oneontaʼs first two wins of the season came back-to-back against Marist and Iona. The Marist win came on the road 1-0 while the win against Iona came at home 3-2. Senior Chris Spence (N. Miami Beach, FL/N. Miami Beach) scored the eventual game-winner early in the second half against Iona. Sophomore Keith Manscuk (Rochester, NY/Aquinas) had the game-winning goal against Marist. Manscuk finished the season as the teamʼs leading scorer with six goals and one assist. Oneonta went 4-4 over its next eight games including a

huge road win against Syracuse University 2-0. The significance of the win for Oneonta was its first victory against Syracuse since 1988. During the final stretch of the season Oneonta went 2-3-1 including a win against Philadelphia University that clinched a spot in the ASC tournament. The Red Dragons earned the third seed and played the second seed Howard University in the semifinals of the conference

tournament hosted by Hartwick. Oneonta ended Howardʼs season with a 2-1 win in overtime. Manscuk scored the game-winner early in the first overtime to lift Oneonta into the championship game. Unfortunately the Red Dragons would fall in the title game 2-0 to Hartwick to end the season.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (9-4)

The womenʼs tennis team improved overall in the win column this fall under second-year coach Bill May. The team finished 9-4 in dual matches, which was an improvement over 3-6 in 2004. Four individuals registered double digits in wins in singles action as the team compiled an overall record of 66-29 in singles play. The Red Dragons got out of the gate quickly to start the season 3-0. The team opened the season with a 9-0 against Russell Sage at home before winning back-to-back matches at Plattsburgh and Potsdam. Oneontaʼs first set back of the season came at home against Cortland 7-2. The match score looked worse than the individual matches played as two of the singles matches went to three sets. The two winners on the day were sophomore Elise Perigard (Manilus, NY/Bishop Grimes) and freshman Rebecca Caouette (Wyantskill, NY/Columbia). Both Perigard and Caouette would remain undefeated through the first nine matches of the season. Perigard didnʼt lose a match in singles play until the SUNYAC championships where she fell in three sets in the semifinals at 6th singles. Perigard finished the season 13-2 overall in singles while Caouette finished her rookie campaign 12-3 in singles play. After back-to-back losses at home to Geneseo and Union, the Red Dragons won five of its last six matches entering the conference tournament. The team finished fourth overall with 11 points at the SUNYAC championships and came home with no conference champions in singles or doubles. Besides Perigard and Caouette, junior Nicole Lindell (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) and freshman Kristen Donnelly (East Islip, NY/East Islip) were the other players who reached double figures in singles wins. Lindell was the team leader with 14 wins while Donnelly registered 10.

VOLLEYBALL (14-21)

The 2005 volleyball season was one of transition as head coach Colleen Cashman welcomed six new faces to her team to

add to a team that already had many underclassmen. The result was a 14-21 season overall while not qualifying for the SUNYAC tournament. The season began with a second place finish at the Red Dragon Invitational. Oneonta went 4-0 during pool play action before falling to RIT in the championship match 3-1. Senior Jill Meehan (Albany, NY/Guilderland) and junior Maegan Eddinger (Apalachin, NY/Owego Free Academy) were selected to the All-Tournament Team. After going winless at the Bomber Invitational hosted by Ithaca College, Oneonta rebounded at the New Paltz Invitational with a 3-1 weekend and a second place finish. Freshman Courtney Wavercak (Syracuse, NY/C.W. Baker-Baldwinsville) and junior Kyle Dugan (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) made the All-Tournament Team. The Red Dragons finished the month of September going 3-2 in the first SUNYAC pool play weekend at SUNYIT. Oneonta split its two matches on the first day losing to Cortland and defeating Plattsburgh. On the second day the Red Dragons defeated the hosts and New Paltz, but fell to Potsdam to put them in fourth place in the East Division. The final month of the season was not kind to Oneonta as they hit a bad stretch and completed a 3-12 October including a 1-4 record at the final conference pool play weekend, which knocked them out of a playoff spot. During the season ending stretch Oneonta won a total of 12 games while dropping 37 including a streak of seven matches where the Red Dragons were shutout. Meehan led the team with 327 kills and a .267 hitting percentage. Dugan led the team in blocks with 111 while Eddinger was the team leader in digs with 373.

2004-05 CHAMPS/SAAC NewsThe Fall 2005 semester has once again proved to be a busy one at Oneonta State College Athletics as educational programming on hazing, alcohol and leadership were focal points; and community service projects continued to abound due to the continued generosity of our student-athletes and coaches. This semester the athletic department broke new ground by instituting a Captain s̓ Leadership Program involving captains or leaders of each team and their coaches. The concept of the Captainʼs Leadership Program is such that if the leaders of each team are educated about the issues that can and will face them and their teammates during their college careers, that some of these issues will be limited because captains will understand the significance of speaking up to prevent them. Designed as a year-long project, the series began August 31st, when John Underwood, founder of the American Athlete Institute spoke separately to each group concerning peak athletic performance and the impact of alcohol and other drugs.

Each leader and coach were also given Jeff Jannssenʼs The Team Captain s̓ Leadership Manual, a 10 week interactive book in which each chapter considered different challenges faced within a team setting to give leaders and coaches ideas and suggestions to help them handle the situation. As one of the

nation’s premiere Peak Performance Coaches, Jeff Janssen, M.S. helps coaches and athletes develop the team chemistry, mental toughness, and leadership skills necessary to win championships. We are excited that Jeff Janssen will be visiting campus on February 15, 2006 to speak with us more on his exciting leadership series programs.

Freshman athletes were engaged by Elaine Pasquaʼs presentation, Sex and Excess – Surviving the Party on September 12th. Ms. Pasquaʼs down to earth presentation focuses on the perils of drinking and just what can happen if you canʼt remember it. Students were engaged in a fluid exchange exercise highlighting how easy it can be to transfer the AIDS virus as well as other sexual diseases.

Next we geared up for the 1st National Hazing Prevention Week sponsored by CHAMPS. Two speakers were brought on campus to speak to our student-athletes. On Sunday, September 25th, Dr. Susan Lipkins, a psychologist from Long Island spoke to SAAC representatives on the role of the bystander during hazing incidents; as well as team bonding exercises versus hazing, is there a difference? Brett Sokolow, President of the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management spoke to the campus community on Thursday, September 29th of which each student-athlete was required to attend. Mr. Sokolow, a higher education attorney educated an audience of approximately 600 student-athletes, Greeks and general student body on the legalities of hazing. This presentation reached the students because it involved money, i.e. how much it can cost someone who is sued for not only hazing but for being a bystander as well. At the end of his presentation, Mr. Sokolow also met with the captains of each team to answer any questions they might have had, which supported our Captain s̓ Leadership Program.

Our final educational program occurred during Oksoberfest – Alcohol Awareness Week, where once again student-athletes were highly encouraged to attend the presentation Drink Like A Man presented by Jackson Katz, one of Americaʼs leading anti-sexist male activists. His program centered on the role of media in society

today promoting abundant alcohol abuse as well as the difficulties students face in navigating a cultural environment saturated with messages about gender and alcohol.

During our first SAAC meeting of the semester, it didnʼt take long for the representatives to jump on the community service bandwagon! With Hurricane Katrinaʼs wrath still fresh in our minds, representatives agreed to take up a collection from their teams to donate to the Hurricane Katrina Fund. The student-athlete and coaches generosity amounted to $985.00 that was sent to help the victims of the hurricane! Although each team is only required to participate in one community service project a year per our CHAMPS program, each team donates much more time than that!

On Sunday, November 6th, over 200 student-athletes and coaches participated in the first SUNYAC wide Leaf Raking Day from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, in which we raked and bagged leaves at the homes of senior citizens. On Saturday, menʼs baseball spent the day across from their complex raking leaves and fixing fences at the home of one of their neighbors. Steve Garner, Athletics

Director and Tracey Ranieri, Associate Athletics Director were sent numerous thank you cards from the recipients of the student-athletes hard work.

Our final community service project for the semester and possibly the most rewarding was our Christmas gift giving to the Angel Tree Migrant Workers Children. Each team was given one to three children to buy gifts for this Christmas and once again, the children are not going to be disappointed. Close to $1000 was donated by our athletic teams to allow these children to open gifts on Christmas morning. Each year

PATRICIA JAEGER AND MARY VELAN EARN ALL-AMERICAN HONORS IN SOCCER

Two members of the womenʼs soccer team earned All-American honors this fall as senior midfielder Patricia Jaeger (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) and sophomore midfielder Mary Velan (Stamford, NY/Stamford) were each selected as NSCAA Division III All-Americanʼs. Jaeger earned a spot on the NSCAA second team while Velan was a third team selection.

For Velan it marks the second year in a row in which she has earned first team All-Region and third team All-American honors. As a freshman Velan became the first freshman in school history to earn first team All-Region honors and advance to the national ballot, where she was a third team All-American. This season Velan finished the season with a team best 45 points on 17 goals and 11 assists. Her 45 points tied the single season record set by fellow Stanford resident, Liz McGrail, during the 2000 season. Just a sophomore, Velan is already tied for third on the all-time points list with 83 in just two seasons of play. Earlier this fall she was named to the SUNYAC All-Conference first team and was a NYSWCAA All-State selection.

Jaeger is making her first appearance on the NSCAA All-American team and third appearance on the Northeast All-Region team. In her two

previous All-Region selections she was a third team All-Region selection as a sophomore and a second team pick last year as a junior. This season she set a single season record with 20 goals and was selected as the SUNYAC Player of the Year. She was also a first team All-Conference selection and started all 25 games for the Red Dragons while finishing second on the team with 44 points. Like Velan, Jaeger was also a NYSWCAA All-State selection this fall. Jaeger and Velanʼs All-American selections mark just the sixth and seventh All-American selections in Oneonta State womenʼs soccer history. PATRICIA JAEGER EARNS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN HONORS

When the ESPN The Magazine 2005 Academic All-American Teams have been announced for womenʼs soccer, Oneonta State senior Patricia Jaeger (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) was among those named to the womenʼs soccer College Division second team for her outstanding accomplishments in the classroom. Her academic All-American honor came after she was selected to the District 1 First team, which made her eligible to appear on the National ballot.

Throughout her career Jaeger has been a continuing honoree for the SUNYAC Commissionerʼs List and All-Academic Team. In 2004 she was a District 1 Third team and NSCAA Scholar All-Region selection, while being honored with a NYSWCAA Scholar-Athlete award for the 2004-2005 school year. In the spring of 2004 she was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma, the National Student Athlete Honor Society, while being selected by the coaches as the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year for the 2004-2005 school year.

This fall Jaeger served as a co-captain of her team and has been positive role model both on and off the field throughout her career.

Since stepping on the field in the fall of 2002 she has played in 97 of 98 games while starting 95 of those games. She closed out her career this fall with 20 goals and four assists and finishes with a career line of 35 goals and 13 assists for 83 points. Her 20 goals this fall are the most in the history of the womenʼs soccer program and her career goals and point totals are both third in their respective categories on the career leaders list. She has received numerous awards for her athletic achievements including SUNYAC All-Conference honors, All-New York State honors and NSCAA Regional All-American honors.

the athletic teams at Oneonta State are involved in numerous, diverse community service events to help those in need but this event is by far the most fulfilling for our athletes. Beyond a doubt, they do understand just how important it is for everyone to be able to open a gift on Christmas morning; and that the holiday season truly is a time for giving a child joy regardless of their circumstances.

In SAAC news, this semester representatives discussed such topics as coaches evaluations, Red Flag games, hazing issues and Steve Garner met with the group to inform them about some changes that might be happening on campus with facilities. Our Diversity Subcommittee was busy planning two events for us, one an interactive group exercise on the differences of one another based upon the region that we were brought up in which created much discussion on the differences between those from Long Island and those from Upstate. The Diversity Subcommittee then suggested that we end the semester with a “Diversity Holiday Banquet” to celebrate each otherʼs cultural differences. Each individual attending was to bring a dish that they ate during their holiday dinner. Coaches were invited to attend the feast which included everything from hot chicken wings, lasagna, squash and chicken and rice to apple pie, Jello and donuts for dessert. Each person wrote their holiday tradition on an index card that was then drawn at the end of the evening and read by the individual for a door prize. It was a nice, relaxing evening full of fun conversation and good food.

As we continue to bring you the news of our athletes and their accolades on the field, court or pool, we hope that you will continue to recognize how much time and commitment comes from each Student-Athlete outside of their athletic competitions and that you continue to support their endeavors by congratulating them for their hard work and for Leading By Example.

honors more than once with 2004 graduate Sanada Mujanovic being the only other two time All-American. Mujanovic earned third team All-American honors in 2002 and second team honors as a senior in 2003. Liz McGrail is the lone Oneonta State player to receive first team National All-American honors when she was named to the first team as a senior in 2000. Oneonta finished its season 21-2-2 overall and advanced to the final eight in the NCAA Div. III tournament this fall for a third straight season. In the sectional final they tied Tufts

University, but were eliminated in the penalty kick shootout 4-3. In the final NSCAA Coaches poll released last week the Red Dragons were sixth.
