INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

The menʼs and womenʼs indoor track and field teams continued to make their presence known again this year with the teams sending its largest amount of athletes yet to the NCAA championship meet. When all was said and done the two teams combined for a total of eight SUNYAC titles, 16 All-Conference selections, one ECAC champion and five All-Americans. The two teams competed in a total of eight invitational meets along with the SUNYAC meet and the ECAC championships. As the season progressed many school records were broken as individuals continued to meet or better their qualifying standards for the championship meets at the end of the season.

The teams qualified a combined 31 athletes for the conference championship held at Hobart/William Smith Colleges

with many athletes qualifying in more than one event. At the meet four individuals would capture conference championships along with both the men and womenʼs 4x400 meter relays. The Red Dragons saw two athletes win double individual titles with junior Musu Jackson-Buckner (Buffalo, NY) winning both the 55 and 200-meters on the womenʼs side while senior Shaun Hurley (Saratoga Springs, NY) won both the long jump and the triple jump for the men. Senior Ashlee Robertson (Mechanicville, NY)

would capture the title in the 400 meters and then join with Jackson-Buckner, sophomore Maureen Verdier (Baldwin, NY) and junior Erin

Putnam (Ithaca, NY) to capture the 4x400 meter relay. On the menʼs side junior Scott Pollard (Spring Valley, NY) took the individual title in the 400 meters and then joined with classmate Art Driscoll (Saugerties, NY) and seniors Tom OʼNeill (New Rochelle, NY) and Tim Wood (Cortland, NY) to take the title in the 4x400 meter relay. Overall the both teams would place third at the meet.

Two weeks later the teams would send a total of 15 individuals to the ECAC championship meet where Robertson would bring home an individual title in the 400 meters to claim her second ECAC title in as many years. Robertson would also capture third in the 200 meters finishing right behind Jackson-Buckner who placed second in the same event. Freshman Mary Velan (Stamford, NY) would have an impressive showing in her first ECAC meet with a fourth place finish in the 800 meters, while Jackson-Buckner added a fifth place finish in the 55 meters, followed by Verdier who took sixth. For the men Hurley was the highest place finisher of the day capturing second in the triple jump. Driscoll and OʼNeill would place fourth and fifth respectively in the 400 meters and then join with Pollard and Wood for a fifth place finish in the 4x400 meter relay.

They closed out the season at the NCAA Division III championship meet held at Illinois Wesleyan where they would be represented by nine athletes competing in five events.

For the women Robertson, Jackson-Buckner, Verdier and Velan headed to Illinois. Jackson-Buckner and Robertson each earned individual berths in the 55 and 400 meters respectively while also earning a berth as a part of the 4x400 meter relay team with Verdier and Velan. Robertson would be the lone representative from the womenʼs team to make it past the first day of qualifying finishing second in her heat to advance to the 400 meter final. Jackson-Buckner would end up finishing 12th in the 55 meters while the 4x400 relay team finished third in their heat for a 10th place overall finish. On the final day of competition Robertson would enter the 400 meter final as the sixth seed based on her preliminary time however she would win her heat finishing fifth overall with a time of 58.16 to earn All-American honors.

The men would send five athletes to Illinois as Hurley qualified in the triple jump and was joined by the 4x400 meter relay team of Driscoll, OʼNeill, Wood and Pollard. These five men would also be the first five male athletes to qualify for the national meet

in the programs short three-year history. On the first day the 4x400 relay would finish second in their heat, qualifying for the finals as the third seed with a time of 3:19.28. Hurley would get to compete on the second day of competition where he finished 14th overall in the triple jump. The 4x400 relay would then take to the line in the finals where they finished fifth overall and earned the first All-American honors in the history of the menʼs indoor track and field program.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (19-10)

The womenʼs basketball team completed another winning season under head coach Dan McGraw while earning its third straight ECAC tournament berth. The team finished the season 19-10 overall and 11-5 in the SUNYAC and advanced to the SUNYAC tournament where they fell to Oswego in the semifinal round of play. The season started on a good note with the team winning two games and bringing home the New Jersey City – Gothic Knight Tip-Off Classic title. The Red Dragons would open the tournament with a 70-58 win over FDU-Florham before defeating New Jersey City 55-45 in the tournament title game. Senior Ann Marie Faia (Yonkers, NY) was named the tournamentʼs most outstanding player and junior Kristen Wittig (Lisle, NY) was named to the All-Tournament team for Oneonta. The Red Dragons would then open their conference schedule with a loss to Cortland before bouncing back and picking up wins over Buffalo State and Fredonia. A pair of non-conference wins moved the Red Dragons record to 6-1 as they entered the Holiday Inn Classic Tournament. In the first game of the tournament Oneonta would defeat cross-city rival Hartwick by a narrow 54-52 margin to move to the tournament title game against Kings College. In the title game Kings would never trail as they used a 23-13 first half lead en route to a 49-40 victory. Tournament runner-up Oneonta had two selections to the All-Tournament team with senior Noreen Naughton (Mineola, NY) and junior Gabrielle Doemel (Latham, NY) each earning All-Tournament honors for their performance in the tournament. The new year would begin with a string of four straight wins for Oneonta, including conference wins over Plattsburgh, Potsdam and SUNYIT. The Red Dragons would then fall to Oswego in a marathon

four overtime game 84-93 in the first of what would be four straight losses. After starting February with a loss the Red Dragons would pick up three straight conference wins including a key 54-50 win over the rival Red Dragons of Cortland on Red Dragon night. The team would close out the regular season with a loss to Oswego and wins over New Paltz and Potsdam to move their record to 16-8 as they entered the SUNYAC tournament. Oneonta entered the conference

tournament as the fourth seed and hosted Fredonia in the tournament quarterfinals. In this game Naughton would score a game high 14 points in leading Oneonta to a 56-38 victory and advancing the Red Dragons to the tournament semifinals. In the semifinals Oneonta played top seeded Oswego who had handed the Red Dragons losses in both of their previous match-ups during the season. This match-up would prove to be no different as the Lakers handed the Red Dragons a 72-53 loss. Naughton would once again lead Oneonta finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds in the loss. Next up for the Red Dragons was a return date with Rensselaer in the ECAC tournament. The Red Hawks had defeated the Red Dragons in each of the previous two years during the ECAC tournament and Oneonta was ready to change that pattern. Led by a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds the third time would prove to be the charm for Oneonta as the Red Dragons defeated the Red Hawks 72-64 to move onto the ECAC semifinal round against St. John Fisher. Against St. John Fisher senior Allie Sullivan (Crompond, NY) would lead four Red Dragons in double figures however it would not be enough on this day as St. John Fisher took the win 81-68

ending the season for the Red Dragons.

MEN’S BASKETBALL (12-14)

The menʼs basketball team began the season with many new faces including a new coach and an entirely new coaching staff. Under the direction of Vincent Medici the Red Dragons showed promise for the future as they would finish their first semester schedule with a 3-5 record while only losing by more than ten in one of their first five losses. The Red Dragons would open their season on the road at the John K. Adams Classic hosted by Rutgers-Newark. After dropping their first game of the tournament to Rutgers-Newark 59-49 the Red Dragons would bounce back to take 70-50 victory over Eastern Nazarene in the consolation game. Senior Anthony Negreanu (Woodside, NY) was named to the All-Tournament team after averaging a total of 15 points a game for the tournament. Oneonta would then begin conference play with three straight games on the road where they fell to Cortland, Buffalo State and Fredonia. The Red Dragons would open their home schedule with a 88-74 double overtime win over Keuka before playing host to Holiday Inn Classic to close out first semester play. In the Holiday Inn Classic the Red Dragons would pick up a first round win against Hartwick to earn city bragging rights and the right to face Wesleyan in the tournament title game. The championship game would be a close fought battle between both teams with Wesleyan holding a 39-38 lead at the half and holding on for the narrow 74-72 victory. Junior Sean Coffey (New Paltz, NY) led all scorers in the title game with a season high 28 points including nine three pointers. Coffey and sophomore Michael Reardon (Staten Island, NY) both represented Oneonta on the All-Tournament team for their performances in the tournament. Second semester play would begin at the York College tournament where Oneonta would fall to Edgewood 78-67 in the first round of play before narrowly defeating Drew 60-57 to take the consolation game. Junior William Heslin (Schaghticoke, NY) would lead the Red Dragons in the tournament finishing with a team high 17 points against Edgewood before tallying 13 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double against Drew. After dropping a game on the road against Utica the Red Dragons would begin a stretch of five straight conference games where they went 2-3. The highlight of this stretch was a 70-64 upset over Plattsburgh who entered the game with an undefeated conference record. The Red Dragons would pick up their second upset of the month in late January when they topped Brockport 68-67 in the final seconds to avenge a 30-point loss to the Golden Eagles just a week earlier. Oneonta would close out their regular season schedule in February going 4-2 to move their SUNYAC record to 8-8 on the season and earn berth in the conference tournament as the seventh seed. In the conference tournament the Red Dragons would find themselves matched up against their rival Red Dragons of Cortland. Cortland would go ahead early taking a 37-28 lead at the half. Oneonta would battle back in the second half holding the lead on two occasions, however Cortland would hold on in the end taking the narrow victory of 57-56.

SWIMMING & DIVING

The menʼs and womenʼs swimming and diving team saw a lot of new faces this year, but this didnʼt seem to hold them back. The men held their dual meet record from last year with a record of 4-5. The women completed their season with a record of 5-4, which was an

improvement from last season. Early in the season the team showed Coach Schuler, and everyone at the North Country Invitational meet, that the Red Dragons were there to win. The men came home with a close second place finish and the women came home winning the meet for the first time ever. The team qualified a large amount of swimmers for the ECAC meet this year resulting in the men taking 8th and the women finishing in 7th just a half a point behind Hartwick in the 6th place spot.

The swimmers who qualified for the SUNYAC championship meet, 12 women and 9 men, went above and beyond what they came to do. The final placing for both teams did not do justice to the performance by each swimmer. Both the womenʼs team and the menʼs team finished in 7th trailing fairly close behind both the 5th and 6th place teams. The teamʼs incredible SUNYAC performance became evident with the amount of records broken at the meet.

The womenʼs team was led by junior, Sarah Millspaugh (Pine Bush, NY) who was the only individual medallist at the championship meet. Millspaugh placed third in the 400 Individual Medley breaking a school record, and was part of both the 200 and the 400 record breaking freestyle relays. Sarah also had top eight finishes as well with record-breaking times in the 200 freestyle, placing 7th, and the 1650 freestyle, in which she finished 5th overall.

Another top swimmer for Oneonta this season was newcomer Danielle Ulanowski (Croton-on-Hudson, NY). She became the teamʼs lead point scorer in the backstroke events, placed 7th overall in the 100 back, and 8th overall in the 200 back at the SUNYAC meet, breaking records in both those events. Danielle was also a part of the 200 and 400 record-breaking relays as well as the 200 medley relay that also broke a school record.

The womenʼs 400 medley relay would have been the fourth record-breaking relay at the SUNYAC meet for the women, which featured Ulanowski, senior Mary Ryan (Port Washington, NY), sophomore Isabel Morgan (Delmar, NY), and Sarah Millspaugh. Unfortunately, the relay was disqualified leaving their record-breaking time unable to reach the record board.

Gillian Sutera (Middletown, NY), kept her name on the record board again this year breaking her own previous marks on the 1-meter board for both six and 10 dives as well as her 3-meter, six dive score.

The menʼs team yet again could not have done so well without the help of Senior Ryan Conaughty (Fairport, NY). Conaughty

finished the SUNYAC meet having been a part of both record-breaking medley relays as well as the record-breaking 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Individually, Ryan finished 5th in the 400 IM earning a new school record, 9th place in the 100 breaststroke, and 7th place in the 200 breaststroke. He broke the 100 breaststroke record, which had been standing since 1973.

Other top finishers for the men were Senior Bill Dersosits (Schenectady, NY), Sophomore Bryan Fadel (Amherst, NY), and

Freshman Peter Millspaugh (Pine Bush, NY). Dergosits barely missed a spot into the finals in the 50 freestyle, which had resulted in a swim-off between him and two other swimmers in the conference. He finished with 17th overall in the event, 15th in the 100 freestyle, and 15th in the 200 butterfly. Fadel finished 12th overall in the 200IM breaking the school record, and received 5th place in the conference in the 100 butterfly. Millspaugh had two top eight finishes in his rookie year with a 5th place in both the 100 back and the 200 back, also breaking both records.

All three of these swimmers, helped by Conaughty, broke the 200 and 400 freestyle relay records. The relay team also broke the medley relay records, which had been standing on the record board for over 30 years.

WRESTLING (16-4)

The wrestling team, under the direction of first year head coach Duane Ritter, put together the best season in the programʼs history finishing with a 16-4 dual meet record and tied for 14th place overall at the NCAA Division III Championships. The Red Dragons had many individual champions throughout the season, including multiple All-New York State wrestlers, three national qualifiers and one All-American. The season began as it usually does with the Monarch Invitational hosted by Kings College. The Red Dragons would place second in the tournament with multiple place winners and two individual champions as junior Kyle Hauptfleisch (Franklin, NY) and sophomore Josh Stewart (Fairport, NY) each collected titles. Oneonta would then host the Red Dragon Invitational where they took the team title and picked up three more individual titles with Hauptfleisch and seniors Rory Tobias (Binghamton, NY), and Dustin Winn (Bainbridge, NY) each claiming their respective weight class title. Oneonta would travel to the Petrofes Tournament hosted by Messiah College where they would come home with a fourth place finish. Winn was the lone Oneonta wrestler to bring home an individual title taking top honors in the 157 lb. weight class. The Red Dragons would close out the fall semester part of their schedule hosting a quad-meet that included RIT, WPI and Johnson & Wales. Oneonta would pick up victories over RIT 24-11 and WPI 33-15 before falling to Johnson & Wales 36-13 to move their dual meet record to 2-1 entering the winter break. The first half of the month of January would consist of numerous dual meets with the Red Dragons moving their dual meet record to 10-2 over that span. Mid-January would include a trip out west where the Red Dragons competed at the Menlo Tournament hosted by Menlo College in Atherton, California. Competing as the lone Division III school the Red Dragons would place seventh out of eight teams and return with two place winners as Winn and classmate Nick Castellano (East Meadow, NY) finished third and second respectively in their respective weight classes. The following weekend the Red Dragons would play host to the New York State Collegiate Championships where they would place sixth for their highest finish ever at the championships. Leading the way was Winn who was the top Oneonta placewinner earning All-State honors and placing third at 157 lbs. Freshman John Leech (Otego, NY) would have a strong showing in his first appearance at the NYS Championships earning All-State honors while placing fourth at 133 lbs. A total of seven Red Dragon wrestlers would earn All-State honors as sophomores Scott Gorman (Seaford, NY), Ryan Higgins (Plainview, NY), and Stewart along with Hauptfleisch and Castellano, joined Winn and Leech as top eight place finishers in their respective weight classes. Oneonta would finish its dual meet season going 6-2 to finish 16-4 overall marking the most wins in the programs existence. At the Empire Wrestling Conference Championships the team would place fifth for the second straight year with Tobias earning an automatic NCAA bid by placing first at 149 lbs. Winn and Castellano would each join Tobias at the NCAA tournament after finishing second in their respective weight classes at the ECWC tournament and earning wild card bids chosen by the conference coaches to represent the conference at the Division III Championships. At the Division III Championships held at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, the Red Dragons would finish tied for 14th as a team with 18.5 points marking their highest finish ever at the National Championship meet. Individually Winn would earn All-American honors after finishing third at 157 lbs. Castellano and Tobias each came within one win of reaching the All-American round falling in the consolation quarterfinals.

The Div. III National Wrestling Coaches Association released its 2004-05 national Scholar All-America Team at the conclusion of the national tournament and three Oneonta State wrestlers were honored for their outstanding work in the classroom. Earlier at the tournament hosted by St. Olaf College the Oneonta State wrestling team was honored as a Scholar All-America Team after compiling a team grade point average of 3.2. It was the second year in a row the team had attained the honor as they were one of 20 Div. III teams to earn the honor. Leading the list of individuals who were honored is senior Dustin Winn (Bainbridge, NY/BGA) who earns the honor for a third straight year. Winn capped his stellar wrestling career at Oneonta by earning All-American honors at the national championship meet. Coming into the meet unseeded Winn worked his way through the brackets to finish third overall at 157 lbs. Winn will leave the Oneonta State program as its all-time wins leader with 131. Joining Winn on the academic All-American team was classmate Rory Tobias (Binghamton, NY/Johnson City) and junior Kyle Hauptfleisch (Franklin, NY/Delaware Academy). Tobias also competed at the national championship meet where his career came to a close one win short of the All-America round with a loss in the consolation quarterfinals at 149 lbs. Tobias was unseeded as well and dropped his first match of the tournament to Mark DiCiccio of Springfield 6-1. He then won two straight matches by decision before falling 4-3 to Jared Evans of Augsburg, who was the #5 seed who had fallen into the consolation bracket. Hauptfleisch, a junior competed his final season for the Red Dragons this winter. He will transfer to RIT next fall where he will complete the final year of his 3/1 engineering degree. This season he compiled a dual meet record of 16-5 while placing first at 174 lbs. in both the Monarch Invitational and the Red Dragon Invitational. Hauptfleisch earned All-State honors after finishing sixth at the New York State championship meet and completed his Oneonta State wrestling career by placing third at the ECWC championships. To be eligible for selection as a Scholar All-American, a wrestler must achieve a 3.2 GPA and have been a place-winner at the national qualifying tournament while wrestling in half of the teamʼs scheduled matches or have a winning percentage of 67% or better in at least 2/3 of the scheduled teamʼs matches.

ONEONTA STATE ATHLETES HONORED FOR SERVICESAAC Honored by Division III Athletic Administrators

The Oneonta State Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) was honored over the winter by the Division III Athletic Administrators/Jostens Community Service Awards program with honorable mention recognition for their project last fall that helped those affected by the hurricanes in Grenada. Following the hurricanes former Oneonta State assistant menʼs soccer coach Marlon Glean, whose family lives in Grenada, contacted SAAC. The group then held a clothing and food drive at the end of September where they collected 35 boxes of clothing, toys, bed sheets, school supplies and food from students and community residents. The United Parcel Service in Oneonta donated boxes and arranged free transportation to Brooklyn where Glean then handled the shipping of the boxes to Grenada. The award marks the third time in four years that the association has recognized Oneonta State students. Oneonta was one of six “Awards of Merit” according to the association news release, and four colleges received honorable mention. The association awarded $1,000 scholarships to three colleges. Oneonta State received a $1,000 scholarship in 2003 and an honorable mention citation the previous year. SAAC consists of 40 student-athletes representing all of Oneonta Stateʼs 21 athletic teams. Teams are required to perform community service, and SAAC coordinated the projects and activities. The awards program recognizes and encourages contributions NCAA Division III athletes make to their campuses and communities. The association is comprised of athletics administrators from more than 400 institutions and conferences.

LOPICCOLO SELECTED AS SUNYAC MEN’S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD COACH OF THE YEAR

Following their best showing at the SUNYAC championship meet in their three years of existence head track and field coach Matt LoPiccolo was named the 2005 SUNYAC Menʼs Indoor Track and Field Coach of the year. The award is voted on by the conference coaches and given out annually at the conclusion of the SUNYAC championship meet.

LoPiccolo, who is in his fifth year of coaching at Oneonta, led the menʼs indoor track and field team to a third place finish in the SUNYAC Championships, an improvement of two places from their fifth place finish in 2004. The Red Dragons captured three individual titles and placed first in the 4x400 relay this year, setting a meet record in the process. In the three years of the programs existence LoPiccolo has seen a total of five men earn individual All-Conference honors along with coaching two relay teams to conference titles. This season the menʼs team sent their first representatives to the national championship meet where the 4x400 meter relay team came home with All-American honors.
