DUKE REBOUNDS The third-ranked Blue Devils rebounded in a convincing way last Saturday with a 14-4 victory over Richmond. Trailing 2-1 after the first quarter, Duke rattled off eight straight goals to secure a 9-2 halftime lead. Justin Guterding assisted on the tying goal and scored the next four straight to give Duke a comfortable lead. He finished with eight points overall. Defensively, Duke kept the Spiders off the scoreboard in the second and fourth quarters and forced 25 turnovers. Richmond managed only 25 shots for the game with 10 of the 14 on goal being stopped by goaltender Danny Fowler.

LAST TIME WE MET Danny Fowler made 14 saves to lead No. 16 Duke to a 15-7 victory over No. 12 Loyola last season and give John Danowski his 375th career victory. The Blue Devils outscored the Greyhounds by a 5-0 margin in the second quarter to take an 8-3 advantage into halftime as Brad Smith spearheaded the spurt with a pair of goals. Jack Bruckner and Justin Guterding finished with five points each while fellow attackman Joey Manown posted three markers and one helper. Smith carded two goals and one assist and Mitch Russell came off the bench to contribute one goal and two assists. Duke held Loyola leading scorer Pat Spencer to just three points, half his 6.0 points per game average.

SCOUTING LOYOLA Loyola heads into Saturday’s contest ranked sixth with a 4-1 overall record. The Greyhounds are coming off of 13-5 victory over conference foe Holy Cross. They are 1-1 against ranked opponents, losing to Virginia 13-12 and beating Johns Hopkins 12-5. Pat Spencer headlines the offense with 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points to rank ninth nationally. Kevin Lindley complements him with 13 goals and 15 points overall, while Jay Drapeau has 11 points. Foster Huggins is the top takeaway man to anchor the close defense. In the three outings against the Blue Devils, the Maryland native is averging 4.33 points, 2.33 goals and two assists per game. DUKE VS. LOYOLA ON PAPER On paper the Blue Devils and Greyhounds are an even matchup. Both squads feature a top 10 scoring offense and a top 10 scoring defense. Duke has a star attackman in Justin Guterding (7.33 pts/gm) and Loyola has a standout talent in junior Pat Spencer (5.40 pts/gm) leading its offense. At the faceoff X, Duke and Loyola both have struggled at times and are currently below a .500 win percentage - .410 for Duke and .443 for Loyola. In goal, it is a pair of veteran backstops in Duke’s Danny Fowler and Loyola’s Jacob Stover averaging just over seven saves per game. Despite this matchup being even statistically, the past five outings give indication that Saturday’s outcome might not follow that path as none of the previous five games have been decided by fewer than five goals. The average margin of victory in the past five meetings is seven. Overall, seven of the 31 games have been decided by a single goal with Duke going 5-2.

DUKE IN TOP 10 MATCHUPS The Blue Devils will be playing in their 81st top 10 game since 2007 Saturday. Duke is 48-32 overall in top 10 matchups under head coach John Danowski and 2-1 against Loyola. The last time Duke and Loyola were top 10 foes was in 2016 when the seventh-ranked Blue Devils bested the No. 9 Greyhounds 15-6 at Ridley Athletic Complex. This will be the 18th top-10 matchup for the Duke seniors. They are 8-9 and 3-1 when ranked higher.

GUTERDING IN THE RECORD BOOKS Justin Guterding is moving up in the Duke and NCAA record books. He currently ranks fourth at Duke and 19th in NCAA history in career points and is 18 points shy of becoming the third Blue Devil and 13th player in NCAA history with 300 career points. His 169 goals are 23rd in NCAA history. If Guterding matches his 51 goals total from 2017 - he needs 28 more - he will finish with 197, good for third in NCAA history. Zack Greer is the lone player in Division I lacrosse to score 200 career goals. Guterding needs 33 more to reach that mark and 45 to tie Greer’s 206. He has 23 through six games and has nine guaranteed games remaining

He also is the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career points and is tied for the fastest player to 200 points. Guterding registered 97 points in 2017 to become the fourth different Blue Devil in program history to score 90 points in a season. ALL IN THE FAMILY FOR GILES-HARRIS Sophomore close defenseman John Thomas (JT) Giles-Harris isn’t the only one from his family making a name for himself as a Blue Devil. JT’s brother, Joe, is Duke’s top defensive player on the Duke football team. He garnered four All-America awards in 2017, including second-team honors by the Walter Camp Foundation.

VAN RAAPHORST’S ATHLETIC LINEAGE Junior close defenseman Cade Van Raaphorst traded the football for the lacrosse stick despite hailing from a family of elite college quarterbacks. Cade is the son of Jeff Van Raaphorst, quarterback at Arizona State leading the Sun Devils to the Pac-10 and Rose Bowl title in 1987. He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 2006. Jeff also played in the NFL for a few seasons. Uncle, Mike Van Raaphorst, was the backup quarterback to Carson Palmer at Southern California.

UP NEXT Duke continues its three-game road swing with two games in two days. The Blue Devils play Towson March 17 at noon and travel to play Cleveland State March 18 at 1 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on Lax Sports Network.

JOHN DANOWSKI2007-P • 388-191 (35 seasons) • 169-52 at Duke (11 seasons)

Cemented as one of the top coaches in college lacrosse, John Danowski has led the Duke men’s lacrosse team to unprecedented success and himself to the top over the Division I men's lacrosse wins list. Danowski was introduced as Duke’s eighth head men’s lacrosse coach on July 21, 2006 and quickly led the Blue Devils to some of the most successful lacrosse seasons in school history, to three NCAA Championships in five seasons.

In Danowski’s 11 years at the helm of the Blue Devils lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive 169-52 record in leading Duke to seven ACC regular season titles and four ACC tournament titles, eight straight appearances in the national semifinals from 2007-14, four in the NCAA title match and ultimately to the 2010, 2013 and 2014 national titles. The 2014 NCAA crown put Danowski, a winner of 383 career games, among a small group of nine coaches to win three national titles and among eight to capture consecutive crowns. Meanwhile, Duke’s run of eight straight NCAA semifinals rank as the second most of any program since 2000 with Syracuse. Most recently, Danowski passed Dom Starsia as the winningest Division I lacrosse history, garnering his 376th win with a 13-6 victory over Jacksonville.

A winner of nearly 80 percent of his games at Duke, the individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered is equally impressive. In 11 seasons, Danowski mentored 64 All-America selections, 36 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, a pair of USILA Attackman of the Year honorees, a USILA Defenseman of the Year, three USILA Midfielder of the Year award recipients and 21 USILA Scholar All-America picks.

While the success on the field is unsurpassed in Duke lacrosse history, the student-athletes excellence in the classroom also is unrivaled. The Blue Devils consistently lead the ACC in All-ACC Academic picks as well as players on the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
