HOME SWEET HOME FOR THE BLUE DEVILS Duke has fared well in the comfy confines of Koskinen Stadium since 2007. The Blue Devils went 7-2 in Durham last season and are 97-17 all-time at home under John Danowski.

DANOWSKI SITS ATOP WINS LIST Head coach John Danowski etched his name at the top of the Division I men’s lacrosse wins list, beating Jacksonville for his 376th career victory. Dom Starsia held the previous record of 375. Danowski is third among active coaches across all three divisions and is on pace to become the first Division I head coach to reach 400 wins potentially in the 2018 season. The Blue Devils’ leader has 166 wins at Duke, 192 at Hofstra and 27 in his first stop at LIU Post.

BUILDING OFF OF FRESHMAN PRODUCTION The Blue Devils will look to get a sophomore bump from the group of six Blue Devil first-year players - JT Giles-Harris, Terry Lindsay, Sean Lowrie, Joey Manown, Kevin Quigley, Reilly Walsh – who played in all 18 games in 2017 and started a combined 59 contests, the most since the 2011 campaign. They have started out on the right foot with Lowrie, Manown, Quigley and Walsh combining for 21 points overall in three games. Giles-Harris was voted the ACC Defensive Player of the Week after helping anchor a stellar defensive effort and Lindsay has been crucial in Duke’s defensive success.

DUKE DEFENSE STARTS STRONG Duke returned the core of the 2017 defense that turned in its best season since 2009. The Blue Devils haven’t missed a beat, holding all three teams scoreless in the first quarters and to eight or fewer goals overall. The 18 goals are the fewest in three games to start a season under Danowski. The Blue Devils return two of the three starting close defensemen in Giles-Harris and Cade Van Raaphorst, with the hole being filled by fifth-year senior Kevin McDonough of Penn. Top defensive midfielders Sean Cerrone and Terry Lindsay are back, while John Prendergast is expected to help fill the void left by Tommy Zenker. Danny Fowler is between the pipes in his final season in a Duke uniform, while junior Turner Uppgren will back him up.

DUKE IN ONE GOAL GAMES Duke is 76-70 all-time in games decided by one goal in program history. The Blue Devils played a program-high seven one-goal games in both 1994 and 1997. Duke is 19-14 in one-goal contests under head coach John Danowski.

GUTERDING AIMING TO LEAVE HIS MARK Attackman Justin Guterding will be climbing the Duke and NCAA record books this season. The veteran scorer is currently ranked fourth at Duke in career points and 35 points shy of becoming the third Blue Devil and 12th player in NCAA history to 300 career points. He is two points from moving into the top 25 in NCAA history. If Guterding matches his 51 goals from last season, he will finish with 197, which would currently be tied for third in NCAA history. Zack Greer is the lone player in Division I lacrosse history to score 200 career goals. Guterding needs 42 more goals this season to reach that mark and 48 to tie Greer’s 206.

GUTERDING PART OF ELITE ACC GROUP Guterding led the ACC in goals (51, 2.83/gm), assists (46, 2.56/gm) and points (97, 5.39/gm) in 2017 to become just the fifth different player to achieve the feat since 1954. Duke’s Steve Sachs accomplished it twice in 1967 and 1969, while Matt Ward is the most recent in 2006. It has only happened three times, including Guterding in 2017, since 1966. His 97 points are tied for second in ACC single-season history and he is one of four players to score 90-plus in a season. All four of them hail from Duke.

JOE ROBERTSON LEAVING HIS MARK Rookie attackman Joe Robertson had a good two-game stretch for the Blue Devils, tallying six goals and five assists for 11 points last week. He registered a career-best eight points (3g, 5a) against Jacksonville, missing Justin Guterding’s rookie mark of nine his rookie season by one. Robertson has eight goals and six assists in three games to rank fifth among freshmen with a 4.67 points per game average. Robertson is the lone freshman out of the top five nationally to have played in more than one game.

DUKE DUO POINT STREAKS Justin Guterding extended his points streak to 58 games this past weekend, pushing his total to 158 goals and 107 assists for 265 points in that span. He has a point in every game of his career. Junior Brad Smith joined the list, netting a point in his 20th straight game last weekend.

GUTERDING’S ASSIST GAME THRIVING Guterding averaged 2.56 assists per game in 2017, more than a one assist per game improvement of his 1.4 in 2016. He has continued his upward trend of this season, averaging five assists per game through three games. His 46 total in 2017 ranked sixth in Duke single-season history. Only Jordan Wolf, Matt Danowski and Ned Crotty have more assists in a season than Guterding. Guterding has 107 career helpers to rank sixth on the career charts. Danowski and Crotty sit atop the list with 183 and 147, respectively.

70, 71, 72 AND COUNTING FOR GUTERDING With four points at Marquette in 2017 Justin Guterding became the first Blue Devil to record at least 70 points in each of his first three seasons, going for 70, 71 and 97 in his respective seasons. He also is the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career points and is tied for the fastest player to 200 points. Guterding registered 97 points in 2017 to become the fourth different Blue Devil in program history to score 90 points in a season. His total is tied with

SMITH AIMING FOR JUNIOR JUMPBrad Smith registered 20 goals and 19 assists for 39 points his sophomore season, surpassing his total of 14 in his 19 games as a rookie. His stock continues to rise as he matched his career high with four points (3g, 1a) in the season opener and has eight points through three games. In 2016, Smith had nine goals and five assists and registered multiple points in four games with a season-high three points against Georgetown. In 18 games in 2017, Smith had multiple points in 12 outings and registered a career-high four goals against Boston University. The midfielder looks to continue his ascension and needs just 39 more points this year to become the 45th player in Duke history to score 100 career points. FRESHMEN TID BITS Duke welcomed a group of 10 freshmen to campus this fall. It is a talented group with four listed among Inside Lacrosse’s top 100. Nakeie Montgomery, a midfielder from Dallas, was considered the top player in the group after a heralded career at Episcopal School of Dallas.

GUTERDING’S SWITCH FROM 33 TO 14 One of the noticeable differences in the Blue Devils in 2017 was the new number for attackman Justin Guterding. Duke’s top scorer changed his number to 14 to honor the late Eddie Blatz. Blatz was a high school teammate of Guterding’s at Garden City and played at Georgetown from 2014-16.

ALL IN THE FAMILY FOR GILES-HARRIS Sophomore close defenseman John Thomas (JT) Giles-Harris isn’t the only one from his family making a name for himself as a Blue Devil. JT’s brother, Joe, is Duke’s top defensive player on the Duke football team. He garnered four All-America awards in 2017, including second-team honors by the Walter Camp Foundation.

VAN RAAPHORST’S ATHLETIC LINEAGE Junior close defenseman Cade Van Raaphorst traded the football for the lacrosse stick despite hailing from a family of elite college quarterbacks. Cade is the son of Jeff Van Raaphorst, quarterback at Arizona State leading the Sun Devils to the Pac-10 and Rose Bowl title in 1987. He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 2006. Jeff also played in the NFL for a few seasons. Uncle, Mike Van Raaphorst, was the backup quarterback to Carson Palmer at Southern California.

UP NEXT Following Friday’s game against Denver, Duke will hit the road for the first time to take on No. 19 Penn Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. It will start a stretch of four of five games on the road for the Blue Devils that culminates March 18 at Cleveland State.

JOHN DANOWSKI2007-P • 386-190 (35 seasons) • 167-51 at Duke (11 seasons)

Cemented as one of the top coaches in college lacrosse, John Danowski has led the Duke men’s lacrosse team to unprecedented success and himself to the top over the Division I men's lacrosse wins list. Danowski was introduced as Duke’s eighth head men’s lacrosse coach on July 21, 2006 and quickly led the Blue Devils to some of the most successful lacrosse seasons in school history, to three NCAA Championships in five seasons and.

In Danowski’s 11 years at the helm of the Blue Devils lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive 164-51 record in leading Duke to seven ACC regular season titles and four ACC tournament titles, eight straight appearances in the national semifinals from 2007-14, four in the NCAA title match and ultimately to the 2010, 2013 and 2014 national titles. The 2014 NCAA crown put Danowski, a winner of 383 career games, among a small group of nine coaches to win three national titles and among eight to capture consecutive crowns. Meanwhile, Duke’s run of eight straight NCAA semifinals rank as the second most of any program since 2000 with Syracuse. Most recently, Danowski passed Dom Starsia as the winningest Division I lacrosse history, garnering his 376th win with a 13-6 victory over Jacksonville.

A winner of nearly 80 percent of his games at Duke, the individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered is equally impressive. In 11 seasons, Danowski mentored 64 All-America selections, 36 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, a pair of USILA Attackman of the Year honorees, a USILA Defenseman of the Year, three USILA Midfielder of the Year award recipients and 21 USILA Scholar All-America picks.

While the success on the field is unsurpassed in Duke lacrosse history, the student-athletes excellence in the classroom also is unrivaled. The Blue Devils consistently lead the ACC in All-ACC Academic picks as well as players on the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
