Duleek Cardiac First Response group ismaking a positive contribution to thearea as they attend certain Emergencymedical Incidents, (cardiac arrests, chok-ing, stroke, and chest pain) Now with 24qualified responders and more waitingfor training, the group is delighted thattwo of them have now been trained as in-structors! Congrats Marella and Pauline! The National Ambulance Service Com-munity First Responder Initiative is notintended to replace any emergency med-ical provision but rather to complementand enhance the same When a 999 or 112call is made, the National EmergencyOperations Centre sends out an auto-matic text to a dedicated group phone, onreceipt of the text the group mobilizethemselves to the incident under strictadherence to the rules of the road. Feed-back from locals who have had to use

this service is very positive.Responder groups cater for calloutswithin a 5 km radius of their base, soDuleek covers Donore and Bellewstown.Currently there are no Donore respon-ders trained up (they would appreciatesome!) and there are two Bellewstownresponders about to come on stream.Training and ongoing refresher trainingis free – all that is asked is your commit-ment to being a responder. The long termaim of the group is to have at least oneperson in every household able to carryout CPR.All funds are raised by the group them-selves, so the recent Indaver grant andTesco tokens donation were much appre-ciated for purchase of new equipment. If you would like to join them and be-

Land of Legends

Six brave souls from Duleek recently took partin a gruelling charity race with a difference, overcame fears and got soaked to the skin in theprocess!! Laura Donoghue, Dáire McDevitt Ludlow,Maria Ludlow, Ruairí and Maria Nestor and LizCarolan took part in the gruelling but hugely en-tertaining Land of Legends 8K Obstacle Coursein Clogherhead. In aid of the Gary Kelly CancerSupport Centre, the course placed many naturaland man-made obstacles in the way of competi-tors, including; crawling through a flood undera camouflage net; scaling walls; avoid strategi-cally placed electric fences; scaling bales of hay;manouvering through mountains of tyres; stay-ing upright while getting soaked by fire hoses!! For most competitors, however, the biggest chal-lenge was having to dive into Clogherhead har-bour, swim between piers, and haul yourself, dripping wet, up a 30ft ladder on the other end! Many phobias, including fear of heights, waterand electric shocks were faced and overcome onthe day! Well done to ‘Team Duleek’!
