October 2015 Issue 178

The next guild meeting will be on October 19th

at 7:00 pm

Speaker is Harriet Hargrave

Harriet comes from a family of quilters. Her grandmother, mother and sev-

eral of her eight aunts quilted. Her mother tried to teach Harriet to hand

quilt in the early 1970s but to no avail. Harriet mastered machine embroi-

dery in the mid-1970s and adapted machine quilting from those skills. She

was machine quilting when the local quilt guilds in Colorado thought machine piecing was not kosher, let alone

machine quilting!

Harriet was teaching machine piecing, appliqué and quilting through the adult education system by 1978, and

opened her store, Harriet’s Treadle Arts, alongside her mother in April of 1981. The store started out to be

about machine arts but quickly was taken over by machine quilting and piecing classes and supplies.

In 1983, Marti Michell saw some of Harriet’s antique reproduction pieces and was amazed at how hand quilted

they appeared. Harriet essentially introduced nylon thread to the quilt world through those quilts. By 1984, she

was demonstrating her quilting techniques at Houston Quilt Market and was teaching the last day of Mary Ellen

Hopkins’ week-long seminars.

Marti Michell asked Harriet to write a book on machine quilting for her publishing company, then known asY-

ours Truly. The first edition of Heirloom Machine Quilting was released March of 1987. C&T Publishing pub-

lished the second expanded and updated edition in 1990. The third edition was updated in 1995 and the most

recent fourth edition was updated, re-written and re-released in 2004.

President's Note I’ve been busy doing my fall cleaning. You should have seen the dust bunnies that were under my bed! Wonder

how they got there? I’ve also been cleaning out my sewing room. I’ve decided that I really don’t need all of the

stuff that I’ve accumulated. Again, I keep wondering how all of that stuff got there.

So, with that being said…I have a whole big pile of treasures to share with everyone at the garage sale on Octo-

ber 31st. Don’t forget to bring your donations on Friday, October 30 to the church room where we meet. Bring

them anytime on Friday. Someone will be there off and on during the day. Then come back on Saturday, Octo-

ber 31st from 8 – 3 pm. At 2 pm, we will have a sack sale (buy a sack for $5.00 and fill it with anything). Scrap

bags will be $5.00. You can fill your scrap bag from the scrap fabric table.

Harriet Hargrave Workshop at the church

Yes you can quilt on your domestic machine

October 18th 12:30 -- 7:00

Cost: $40

If you are discouraged about learning to quilt on your home machine,

don't believe that you will ever be able to quilt feathers, or are just tired of

having to send everything out to someone else to finish, come spend the

day with Harriet and find out just how doable traditional machine quilting

is. This is not long arm style quilting or free form quilting, but free mo-

tion quilting using lines for consistency and accuracy. You will be able to

quilt open feathers by the end of the class. Harriet’s method of teaching

goes beyond spending time scribbling on fabric; you will actually

LEARN what is involved in excellent achieving excellent quilting. Prac-

ticing should be a journey of improvement, not monotonous boredom.

You will start with grid work without lines, moving into learning to keep

your stitches even and then staying on a line accurately. We end the day

quilting open feathers.

The book “Heirloom Machine Quilting” 4th edition by Harriet Hargrave

is required for this class. See Warren Larsen for ordering the book or for

registering for the class. The supply list was sent in an email earlier.

The garage sale is on October 31 from 8 - 3pm with a sack sale at 2pm (buy a sack for $5.00 and

fill it with anything). Scrap bags will be $5.00. Bring your sewing-related donations on Friday,

October 30, to the church room where we meet. You can drop off donations at any time. We will

be there off and on during the day Friday setting up. We will not be advertising, so spread the

word and bring your friends on Saturday. Donation Suggestions include: fabric yardage and

scraps, patterns, books, notions, sewing tools, sewing machines, etc. The proceeds from this gar-

age sale will go towards our speaker and program fees.

REFRESHMENTS

We still need refreshment volunteers for January and

February of 2016. Please be assured that the refresh-

ments do not have to be elaborate. We very much ap-

preciate all of the delicious foods that have been

served, but we don’t expect every meeting to have

complete meals as refreshments. Some simple bars or

cookies and drinks are quite sufficient. What you

serve is up to you. We want to encourage more peo-

ple to participate in providing refreshments for our

meetings.

Proposed Standing Rule to be voted on at the

October guild meeting:

Retreats will be self-supporting. Registration

revenue from the retreat is expected to cover

all retreat costs.

Newton retreat dates have

been set for 2016. March 3

-5 and September 8-10.

Save the dates!
