Title of Unit: 3rd Grade Geography
Title of Lesson: Naming and understanding the locations of the states.

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: Students will begin learning the locations for each state in the United States using
jigsaw pieces representing each one.
B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3 Skill Level: on level Grouping: Whole group for procedure steps 1-2. Small groups (about 5 per group, 4
groups total) for procedure steps 3-6. Independent practice using the provided
worksheet for step 7.
C. Materials: Printouts of each state (1 state per paper) sorted by region
Large sheet of butcher paper (4) Scissors Glue Markers Map study worksheet Map of the United States Elmo
D. Objectives:o NV State Social Studies Standards

students will work together to place the pieces correctly as they would be seen on a
map.
4. Explain students to NOT glue down their work until the teacher has a chance to assess ifits correct. Teacher will walk around to each group to ensure students are placing the
states in the correct place.
5. Before gluing down the states. Students will label each state correctly.6. Explain and show students how each region comes together to form the United States.7. Students will work on the Map Study Worksheet independently.8. CLOSURE: Ticket out the door: Write the name of a state that does not share a border
with another state.
F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding?
1. The United States puzzle and Map Study worksheet will serve as the assessment. Iwill be able assess how well students are understanding placement of the states
and names.
Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson.1. Based on the United States puzzle, I will be able to verify if students understand
regions based on their discussions with their classmates. If students are talking
about the states in their region and are actively discussing the correct region I

3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson?I would have students write a story about a time they have gone out of state and
for those students who have not traveled out of state-I would have them write
about a state they would like to visit and what they think it will be like.
4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?I will always offer individual help for any student who needs additional help. I will
explain it all the way through and have students who may need help meet me at
the back table, so I can really guide them through the project.
5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?I liked everything about this lesson and would teach it as is.

When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?My partner wrote this lesson plan.

The following states would be larger than what is pictured below. Each state would
be large enough to fit on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper. The states are meant to be cut
out by the students and assembled on a sheet of butcher paper like a puzzle.
