February 2016

Welcome to the first edition of Truck Power in 2016. At Isuzu, we wish all of our readers a happy new year. We trust everyone had a safe and happy festive season and, for those lucky enough to have had one, a relaxing break.

December 31, 2015 marked 27 consecutive years’ leadership by Isuzu Trucks in the ultra-competitive Australian truck market.

Isuzu’s total truck sales volume for the year was 7,442 units, an increase of four per cent on 2014 performance and on-par with the total market growth.

The lion’s share of market growth was seen in the light segment and we were pleased to see that our intelligent N Series range, launched mid-way through 2015, tapped into this with strong sales.

What we’re equally pleased about is kicking off 2016 with this special edition of Truck Power, dedicated to covering every inch of the new 2016 Isuzu F Series medium-duty truck range.

In this spread, you’ll see an at-a-glance ‘mud map’ of everything that’s brand new and improved in the F Series product.

The medium-duty market is the natural habitat of the Isuzu F Series. This special edition features an in-depth look at the versatility and applicability of the range across a raft of uses, as well as some timely insights into the market segment by those in the know at IAL.

So you have the complete picture, there’s also a handy chart outlining changes and additions to the new range.

We’ve also put together the definitive history of the Isuzu F Series. The F Series dates back to the late ’80s when the popular SBR, JBR and JCR medium duty models were reinvented and modernised – giving form to the range we know and love today.

We hope that reading about the origins and evolution of the F Series will help you better enjoy our coverage of the engine technology driving the new F Series range.

With two very different engine options powering many different applications, the new technology caters to the ever-changing needs of its market.

Isuzu’s Torque Convertor Automated Manual Transmission (TC-AMT) is another key feature of the new range, bringing car-like driving performance to the new F Series. We look into the technology behind the TC-AMT and how it’ll change your Isuzu driving experience from now on.

Capping off this special edition of Truck Power are the latest entrants to Isuzu’s ever-popular Truck of the Year competition, which we’ve had a huge response to so far in 2016.

We hope you enjoy discovering the brand new Isuzu F Series range in this special edition. Happy reading.

F SERIES LAUNCH

With an all-new approach, the

introduction of all-new engine technology

and a brand new look, the new 2016 Isuzu F

Series range turned heads at its official

launch in Melbourne. Truck Power was on the ground to bring you an inside look at what has been

described as the most impressive Australian

truck launch ever.

IT’S HERE! 2016 ISUZU F SERIES LANDS IN AUSTRALIA Isuzu’s clever new F Series medium-duty range wowed attendees during its official launch at Melbourne’s Docklands precinct last month.

Stealing the show was the Australian reveal of Isuzu’s new low displacement, high output engine technology from Japan, as well as class-leading fuel economy and emissions control technologies.

Two brand new models were previewed over the three-day event too, including an updated Isuzu FYJ 2000 Auto Short Agitator with Isuzu Electronic Stability Control, and a tough, NLR Servicepack mooted as a possible addition to Isuzu’s celebrated ready-to-work range.

Launch-goers were also treated to an Australian trucking first – a spectacular projection mapping display highlighting just a few of the endless vocational applications covered by the country’s most flexible truck range.

The innovation theme didn’t end there. The event also launched a virtual reality (VR) test drive experience featuring actor Shane Jacobson. The VR experience enabled users to take a ride with the Kenny star in a new F Series truck, taking in all the features and benefits of the new F Series range while driving through the Victorian countryside.

On the product information front, audiences heard

from Isuzu Australia Limited’s (IAL) Chief Engineer Product Strategy, Simon Humphries, and National Sales Manager Andrew Harbison, who provided a detailed analysis of the features and benefits of the new range, covering everything from the new driveline to the new radiator grille.

Isuzu Australia Limited Director and Chief Operating Officer, Phil Taylor, labelled the national launch a success and a landmark moment for the Australian truck industry.

“The challenge for IAL was being able to communicate effectively just how much of a leap forward this new range is.

“The Melbourne launch was an opportunity to publically unpack some of the thinking behind the new features in what’s become an all-encompassing transport solution,” Mr Taylor said.

“In showcasing the new 2016 Isuzu F Series, we had a huge amount of information to impart. By combining a number of pioneering communication elements over the week, I think we’ve given Australian audiences a valuable snapshot of the range and its capacity to deliver genuine efficiencies for Australian businesses.

“Nothing means more to us at IAL than the feedback we receive from our customers and our friends in the media. We’ve had a terrific response on both fronts already, and I’m confident the trucks will perform to the lofty standards we set for all of our products.”

ISUZU AUSTRALIA FACTORS IN GLOBAL PLANSuch is the standing of Isuzu within the Australian road transport industry, the 2016 F Series launch in Melbourne was well-attended by representatives from its parent company, Isuzu Motors Japan (IZJP).

IZJP Chief Engineer for medium-duty commercial vehicles, Mr Takuya Matsumoto, headed a list of IZJP luminaries – spanning Isuzu’s international Planning, Marketing and Sales divisions – who made the trip to Melbourne.

Both international and domestic guests heard from Isuzu Australia Limited’s (IAL) Managing Director and CEO, Koichi Yoda, who provided an update on the strategies driving the global manufacturer, including details of IZJP’s new Mid-term Business Plan.

The plan includes a three-phase approach, reaching for global growth of 23 per cent over a three-year period.

“The Mid-term Business Plan envisions some aggressive global growth in terms of vehicle sales objectives and revenue targets,” he said.

“Despite growing uncertainty surrounding China’s economic performance, our plan is progressing well, and our third quarter business result is on-track toward the first year objective.”

Mr Yoda also spoke of the enhancement of aftersales activity such as customer relations management (CRM) and the reduction of downtime.

“This year, we are accelerating our Customer Relation Management (CRM) strategy. By collating data, we are looking at ways to engage our customers and to anticipate their ongoing needs over the lifecycle of their vehicle and beyond.”

SERVICING EVERY NEED WITH READY-TO-WORK NLRSharing the stage with the new F Series range during the launch was the inclusion of two new preview vehicles on display.

Isuzu NLR Servicepack

Hugely popular with the attendees was the Isuzu NLR Servicepack built upon the hardy, yet nimble NLR 45-150 short wheelbase chassis.

The Isuzu Servicepack is fitted with body featuring two rows of lockers with a generous central storage cavity. The eight lockers are internally lit and all linked to the remote central locking key fob.

With a 1.5-tonne payload on a car driver’s licence, the Servicepack carries over the ‘ute killer’ tag coined by Isuzu’s earlier model ready-to-work range, including the highly regarded Trade and Traypack series.

The Servicepack has a hitch-type tow bar and is physically shorter than a Toyota Hilux – presenting a compelling case for the discerning tradesman or service-orientated fleet.

FYJ Agitator Short Wheelbase with IESC

At the other end of the range, the Short Wheelbase FYJ Agitator spec with Isuzu Electronic Stability Control (IESC) loomed large.

Released in early February, this variant of the FYJ took just 12 months to develop from concept to the truck on display at the launch, and the range was a sales highlight for Isuzu in the heavy-duty segment last year.

The impressive offering has already found a home in the fleets of concrete giants Hanson, Holcim and Boral.

These latest safety improvements see it set to continue a steady climb up the heavy-duty segment sales charts in 2016.

F SERIES LAUNCH

F SERIES LAUNCH

MAPPING SUCCESS WITH THE ISUZU F SERIESThe most two-pedal transmission options in the medium-duty segment, the cleanest medium-duty four cylinder engine on the Australian market and the only truck brand without the need for AdBlue or SCR.

These are just some of the milestones which emerged during the Isuzu’s new F Series launch in Melbourne as the sheer scale of the new range was steadily unveiled across a comprehensive three-day program.

Another breakthrough for Isuzu and the Australian truck industry was a stunning projection mapping display during the Melbourne launch.

The projected light-mapping sequence highlighted the numerous vocational applications of the new range by projecting custom images and beams of light onto a display F Series truck and an accompanying backing screen.

Attendees were taken on ‘a day in the life’ journey of the hardworking, intelligent new F Series truck.

From fire-fighting, trade and construction duties, through to an urban delivery depot, the sound and light display moved the truck through many of its natural environments seamlessly.

The display successfully captures the flexibility and choice on offer throughout the range. It’s an Australian truck first and a must watch. Check it out!

Mid-way through 2015, IAL engaged the services of the highly affable actor and funny-man Shane Jacobson, well-known for his lead role in the Australian comedy hit Kenny.

A renowned rev-head and truck enthusiast, Shane’s role with Isuzu Trucks’ over the past six months has been a happy match.

A new take on the traditional test-drive saw attendees at the launch jump in the passenger seat beside Shane for a virtual-reality drive through the picturesque Yarra Valley wine region in Victoria.

In the VR experience, users were kept well-informed about the features and benefits of the new F Series range while soaking up the stunning Victorian scenery.

Jeff Birdseye, IAL Marketing Manager and Truck Power Editor, said the VR experience was very well-received.

“The VR drive experience was a great way to capture the key aspects of the new range, all-presented by a familiar and very engaging host in Shane.

“Our 2016 F Series range represents a significant step forward in driveline technology and we wanted to capture some of the in major elements in a lighter and memorable manner.

“The projection mapping and VR test-drive experience certainly added a new flavour to the launch and illustrated to attendees both the vast engineering and technical strengths underpinning the new range, but also the innovative thinking that drives the organisation,” he said.

F SERIES LAUNCH

The new Isuzu F Series certainly had tongues wagging following its Australian launch in Melbourne recently.Previewed to the Isuzu Dealer Network, Isuzu’s fleet and VIP customers, as well as the Australian transport media, the new range was described as “impressive,” “sensational,” and “hard to beat.”

With brand new engine technology, emissions features and the introduction of an all-new transmission, the new F Series was always going to be a show stopper, but don’t just take it from us at Truck Power magazine.

Here’s just a snippet of what Isuzu’s launch guests had to say in Melbourne…

THE FLEETS

Terry Tzivakis, General Manager: Interlease Australia (Maaxia Group)

“We’re very impressed. You can see that Isuzu has gone to great lengths to improve their product and it’s great that there’s a lot more variety now as well.

“The low displacement engines technology has a huge bearing for us and our customers. We need flexibility and variety and I think Isuzu has the product range for us.”

Con Veneziano, National Manager Commercial Vehicles: FleetPartners“Typical Isuzu – they do things very well. The line-up of the trucks today and the information presentation was outstanding.

“Isuzu have been number one for 27 years, so there’s a good reason for that. From our perspective, they’ve got a great product. They’re well priced, they’re fantastically optioned and best thing of all is the residual value, so from a leasing perspective, Isuzu will always be on top.”

THE DEALERS

Anthony Long, Wester Truck Centre Melbourne

“It’s been a tremendous day, and the enhancements to the range are fantastic and will offer a wide range of improvements for our customers.

“The new range opens us up to a few application areas we’ve probably been a little under-par on in the past, so we’re looking forward to taking these new specifications to our customers and showing them what we’ve now got to offer.

“The range has obviously been well thought through, and as a dealer it’s pleasing the see that genuine effort has gone into the production of this new range and then to be presented as professionally as it was today is just brilliant to see.”

Serge Buccilli, Webster Trucks Hobart“The presentation today was fantastic. It was highly informative and the range is sensational.

“When you look at the four cylinder option, with that sort of horsepower, along with the sort of applications it can be applied to, you start to see some really good opportunities for our customers.

“To be able to come out and say no AdBlue or SCR to our customers is a massive advantage too. All the technology we saw here today is an advantage for us and that’s why Isuzu have been market leader for 27 years.”

Peter Dewar, Major Motors Perth “Outstanding, simply outstanding.

“I couldn’t have hoped for more and it’s very exciting times ahead.

“The introduction of the different model range with the four and six-cylinder varieties give us a double edged sword and it helps us in markets we sometimes struggle with. The introduction of the DOC on the six cylinder model is a major advancement in our industry too.”

THE MEDIA

Allan Whiting, Editor, Transport and Trucking Today “Isuzu grinds the opposition into the dust again. They’re always leading the pack. It’s got to be disheartening for the opposition. Twenty seven years of leadership…they’re not invincible, but they’re very, very hard to beat.”

Chris Mullett, Editor, Power Torque and Delivery Magazine“When you consider Isuzu has been market leader for 27 consecutive years, you have to recognise that they didn’t achieve that by not producing quality products and by not adapting to the market.

“What we’ve seen here today is the natural evolution of the F Series. Better fuel economy, more power from the engines. All in all, it’s better for the drivers with the comfort levels being where they need to be. They’ve got truck specific sat-nav in the cabins now, which is another task the drivers don’t have to worry about.

“The pre-bodied, ready to work NLR is another ‘ute-beater’ truck that sparked my interest here today.”

RANGE REVIEW

Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) has added a new dimension and injected new life into Australia’s hotly contested medium-duty truck market with its newly released F Series range.

The clever new 2016 Isuzu F Series range counts as the latest and greatest stride in what has been an ever-evolving product journey dating back to the late seventies.

The new offering brings together Isuzu’s unsurpassed international experience both on and off the highway, and nearly three decades of local market domination unmatched anywhere in the world.

WHAT’S NEW?What’s immediately apparent is a brand-new look for the F Series, including new grille design, badging and nomenclature, as well as updated seat trim and steering wheel design.

Though it’s under the skin where the real revolution gets underway…

The jewel in the crown is Isuzu’s small displacement, high torque new 4HK1 turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine, considered the cleanest medium-duty Japanese diesel engine available in Australia today.

Its complement is the new six-cylinder Isuzu 6HK1 engine with Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) for low maintenance and unparalleled dependability.

And Isuzu’s new torque converter equipped automated manual transmission (TC-AMT) – among an array of other range-wide improvements – rounds-out a comprehensive and innovative road transport solution.

CUSTOMER FIRST“The new Isuzu F Series range represents change on a level we haven’t seen in the medium-duty market for quite some time,” said Phil Taylor, IAL Director and Chief Operating Officer.

“While our F Series offering is constantly evolving to meet the needs of Australian businesses, our approach to product development hasn’t seen a great deal of change over the years.

“We will always put the needs and requirements of our customers first.

“It’s an approach that has served us well for 27 consecutive years as the market leader, and we aim to keep it that way.

“In this new F Series range, customers have access to a wider range of quality capital equipment and industry-leading aftersales innovation at a very competitive price.”

ISUZU’S NEW 4HK1 ENGINEIsuzu first introduced a four-cylinder power-plant to the F Series range back in 2007, with the FRR 500 models.

In 2016, the four-cylinder option has been extended up the GVM range.

The new 4HK1 is a completely redesigned engine, with only the bore and stroke remaining the same as its predecessor, and with its low displacement and impressive power and torque rating, there is nothing quite like this engine on the market right now.

When specifying the new 4HK1, customers can take advantage of a 5.2 litre, four-cylinder, two-stage turbocharged and intercooled engine available in two power ratings:

1. A 154 kW (210 PS) variant, producing 726 Nm of torque.

2. A 177 kW (240 PS) variant, emitting 765 Nm of torque.

They represent state-of-art diesel technology which stretches across a swathe of the F Series range, including 11 brand new models.

The 240 PS models include the FRR at 11 tonnes GVM and FSR at 12 tonnes and 14 tonnes GVM respectively. Meanwhile, the 210 PS variants include the Isuzu FRR andFRD 4x2 models and the FSS 4x4 with GVMs spanning 10.7 tonnes to 11 tonnes.

CLEVER TURBOAs far as improved performance is concerned, a key update to the new 4HK1 engine is the introduction of a two-stage turbocharger.

Both the low-pressure and high-pressure elements of the turbo operate throughout the engine rev range, providing smooth and continuous power from take-off.

The physical size of the turbo has also been reduced, giving a quicker response during low engine RPM and faster availability of engine torque.

An environmental victory is delivered via the high pressure-charging of the turbo which increases the effectiveness of the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system – resulting in lower nitrogen oxides (NOx) output.

Other class-leading refinements to the new 4HK1 include the following:

• Changed intake cam design (increased low RPM torque).

• A change in the piston shape (reduced PM, improved fuel economy).

ALL BASES COVERED WITH ISUZU’S NEW MEDIUM-DUTY RANGEIn 2016, Isuzu’s new F Series range is a testament to its unsurpassed international experience – both on and off the highway – and nearly three decades of local market domination unmatched anywhere in the world

Page 9: EDITION 1 2016 - Isuzu Australia › media › 123531 › 0150ar_edition4...What we’re equally pleased about is kicking off 2016 with this special edition of Truck Power, dedicated

• Increased injection pressure (reduced PM, improved fuel economy).

• Optimised injectors (reduced PM, improved fuel economy).

• An improved EGR valve control (reduced PM and NOx).

• Larger intercooler to reduce the air intake temperature and combustion temperatures (reduced NOx).

• Revised engine block to suit the higher cyclinder pressures.

IDLE NO MOREFurther improving fuel economy for models fitted with the new 4HK1 engine is the addition of Isuzu’s idle-stop technology, known as the Idle-Stop System (ISS).

This system rests the engine when the vehicle is stationary (for example, at traffic lights or in heavy traffic conditions), reducing emissions and, ultimately, fuel consumption.

ISS is standard on new 4HK1 4x2 models, except for power take-off (PTO) variants, and plays a significant role in both the 210 and 240 PS versions in reducing fuel consumption.

EMISSIONS CONTROLLooking at the emissions control system, the new 4HK1 complies with Japan’s Post New Long Term (PNLT) emissions standard, which is similar to Euro VI. Both PNLT and Euro VI are expected to be acceptable alternatives when ADR 80/04 (the next emissions standard for turbo) is finalised.

To this end, an external injector for Isuzu’s diesel particulate diffuser (DPD) system has been added

to the new 4HK1. The diffuser works to remove particulate matter (PM) from the exhaust gas emitted by the engine.

As opposed to the existing system, the new external injector eliminates oil dilution by commencing the regeneration process outside the engine block.

TC-AMTFrom now on the high-tech, clean, new 4HK1 can be mated with the latest generation of Isuzu automated manual transmission (AMT).

This third generation AMT sees the original fluid coupling upsized and upgraded to a full torque converter.

A torque converter significantly increases start-ability and driveability, replicating the take-off characteristics of a full automatic.

During times of high slippage (taking off from the lights, for example), the converter works by redirecting fluid and producing an increase in output torque.

With a torque multiplication factor of 1.45:1, the Isuzu TC-AMT helps to launch the vehicle from rest.

Isuzu F Series models that benefit from the new torque converter AMT are spread across the 10.7-tonne to 14-tonne GVM variants.

The FRR and FRD 10.7 tonne models both receive the 210 PS new 4HK1 engine with improved DPD and the new torque converter AMT where available.

The 11-tonne, 12-tonne and 14-tonne 4x2 GVM trucks will benefit from the high torque 240 PS variant with Isuzu’s optional torque converter AMT.

THE ISUZU 6HK1 DOC ENGINEThe other engine technology sharing centre stage is Isuzu’s new six-cylinder 6HK1 engine with Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC).

This is the same engine technology used in the very popular FX and FY models with the 6UZ1 350 PS engine, in this case producing 191 kW (260 PS) @ 2,400 RPM and 761 Nm of torque from 1450 to 2400 RPM.

The 6HK1 with DOC is the only medium-duty engine on the Australian market with neither a diesel particulate filter nor SCR, and the technology is well suited to vocational applications requiring high idle time, high PTO use or frequent stop-start duties.

EMISSIONS CONTROLBy optimising every aspect of combustion in the engine, the Isuzu Japan engineers have produced an engine that generates fewer emissions at the manifold and, therefore, requiring a simpler clean-up operation in the exhaust system.

To this end, many changes have been made including a modified combustion chamber and combustion ratio to improve efficiency and reduce PM emissions.

Fuel injection pressure has been increased by over 10 per cent to 200 MPa, resulting in even greater fuel atomisation and therefore combustion efficiency.

As well as higher injection pressure, the number of injection ports has been increased and the injector angle optimised, creating the best possible fuel burn conditions and combustion efficiency, while the EGR valve control has been optimised, resulting in reduced PM and NOx emissions.

GREATER FLEXIBILITYThe new 6HK1 with DOC powers FRR, FRD, FSR, FSD, FTR and FTS models with the Isuzu six-speed manual transmission or the Allison LCT2500 six-speed automatic transmission.

The new 6HK1 DOC engine is also available in a new model to the line-up, the FVR and FVD with ZF manual transmission or Allison MD 3000 six-speed automatic.

THE ISUZU F SERIES RANGE: MORE CHOICEThe 2016 F Series range represents more choice for medium-duty truck customers, with additional models, wheelbases and model variants included in the line-up to tailor the already eminently capable range to a wider pool of customers and applications.

At 10.7 tonnes 4x2 are the FRR (including Tipper) and FRD models equipped with the new 4HK1 210 PS engine, with either the TC-AMT or Isuzu manual transmission.

Staying with the four-cylinder engine at 11 tonne GVM is the FRR with the 240 PS new 4HK1, again with either the new TC-AMT or Isuzu manual transmission.

In the six-cylinder 11-tonne variants are the FRR and FRD, sporting the 260 PS 6HK1, and including the crew-cab model. These variants can be ordered either with Isuzu manual or Allison LCT 2500 six-speed automatic transmissions.

At 12 tonnes GVM (with an optional 14-tonne rating) there is the FSR with the 240 PS new 4HK1 engine and choice of manual or TC-AMT transmission.

For FSR and FSD at 14-tonne GVM (with the option of being de-rated to 12 tonnes GVM) is the six-cylinder 6HK1 DOC, with either a manual or Allison automatic transmission.

To round off the FSR lineage, there’s the 14-tonne- GVM rated dual-control model available for a range of vocational applications and sporting the new 6HK1 DOC engine.

Moving up in weight to the 15-tonne GVM bracket are two FTR offerings, including crew

cab – equipped again with the no-nonsense 260 PS DOC engine.

Also in the range are the brand new 4x2 FVR and FVD models, both at 16.5 tonnes GVM, are powered by the 260 PS 6HK1 DOC, while the remainder of the FV range carries over with the highly effective 300 PS variant of the Isuzu 6HK1 engine.

Regardless of the engine technology applied, each model embodies a substantial leap in overall development from what was previously available.

BOXES TICKED“All businesses with a stake in the future are intent on performing at peak efficiency – from every operational aspect. Seizing on that efficiency is at the very heart of this latest incarnation of the Isuzu F Series,” said IAL’s National Sales Manager, Andrew Harbison.

“And when it comes to efficiencies, there’s no denying the constant demand to achieve more from less across the automotive world.

“Some of these trends represent a challenge to the status quo, but as we know evolution is also a constant and we must embrace and adapt to change,” he said.

“The Isuzu F Series range is a cleverly configured solution with a spec’d drivetrain that can deliver more than enough power and capacity to work hard while delivering low-cost operation.”

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS OF THE MEDIUM-DUTY TRUCK

OTHER CHANGES…• Manual transmission new 4HK1 models benefit

from the addition of the Start Assist function, to enable easier, faster clutch engagement.

• Revised multi-information display, with a larger screen, comes standard across the range.

• Low-coolant sensor for all models. This seemingly minor addition represents huge risk mitigation, giving advance warning of a situation that could result in catastrophic engine failure.

• Fuel cooler has been introduced to models with the new 4HK1 and 6HK1 engines.

• Upgraded Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) module and software with ABS 8 is now included on FTR, FV, FSS and FTS models.

• Rear seat in crew-cab models has been improved with additional padding in the seat base and realignment of the back rest for greater support.

• Hill Start Aid (HSA) has been introduced in all manual transmission FSS and FTS 4x4 models.

• Additional wheelbase option for FSR models at 4,360 mm.

• A 90 amp alternator has been added to all new F Series models resulting in a 50 per cent output increase for some models.

• Passenger-side ISRI 6860 air suspension seat in the FTS single and crew cab, as well as the FTR crew cab model.

• Satellite navigation as standard on all models (except 4x4).

• Elimination of oil changes at the first free service and an extension of oil change intervals from 15,000 km to 20,000 km for those models with either new 4HK1 or 6HKI DOC. This means the entire F Series range now has 20,000 km service intervals.

• Isuzu remains the only Japanese brand to use the highly regarded Meritor axle and brake assemblies on FVR and FVD 4x2 models, including the new 260 PS DOC models, the FVL 6x2 model and all FVZ or FVY 6x4 models.

• FV models with Meritor axles have factory fitted Stemco Sentinel oil-filled hubs with

Discover hub seals.

MEDIUM-DUTY MARKET

From waste and refuse to cold-chain logistics, Australia’s medium-duty truck market – two-axle vehicles with a GVM greater than 8,000 kg and a GCM less than or equal to 39,000

kg – serves a never-ending list of diverse applications.

This remains one of the automotive industry’s most hotly contested market segments.

Of a total of 32,003 heavy commercial vehicles (with GVM above 3,500 kg) registered in 2015 in Australia, 6,725 were medium-duty trucks, reflecting a small volume increase on the total number of trucks sold in 2014.

The medium-duty market made up 21.5 per cent of total commercial vehicles sales for the year, with the light and heavy truck markets representing just under 31 per cent each, and vans making up the remaining 17 per cent.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ most recent Motor Vehicle Census, there has been a modest rise in registrations of medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks on Australian roads over the longer term – five per cent since 2010.

ADDING VALUE“These sorts of figures point to conservative movement across the medium-duty market in recent times,” said Isuzu Australia Limited’s National Sales

Manager, Andrew Harbison.

“In analysing these trends over a five-year period, there’s no hiding from the fact trucks in this weight range from all manufacturers are well specified and built to last.

“To continue being competitive, transport operators must ensure that their equipment offers the day-to-day performance they are looking for in a reliable and cost-effective package and adds value to their operation through greater efficiency and application flexibility.

In the case of the new 2016 Isuzu F Series range, that can be found by way of greater overall choice and more specific model applicability.”

CHALLENGE ACCEPTEDMeeting this challenge head-on, Isuzu’s new four-cylinder and six-cylinder turbocharged F Series engine options have been thoughtfully paired with a range of transmission choices and new fuel-saving technology.

“Isuzu has a sound record when it comes to reading

the Australian truck market,” Mr Harbison said.

“Indeed, in these times of start-ups and ‘disruption’, it’s an amazing feat for any business to remain on top of an ultra-competitive market for 27 consecutive years, as Isuzu has.

“It’s our ability to intuitively and consistently get to the core of Australian business requirements which continues to set us apart from the competition.”

CRAFTING AN INCENTIVEWith the average age of a truck approximately 14 years, the Australian truck parc continues to age – to the detriment of the environment and road users alike.

Persuading Australian businesses to update capital equipment has always been a challenge, and with truck technology turning over very slowly, motivation for change can be tough to muster.

“The breadth of practical change within Isuzu’s new medium-duty offering builds a solid case for an update, or for first-time truck buyers to slip into the Isuzu ecosystem at what is a high watermark moment for product development and innovation,” Mr Harbison said.

“When you close the loop with Isuzu’s complete aftersales approach, therein lies a watertight Australian transport solution, irrespective of your vocation.”

ISUZU ADDS NEW DIMENSION TO MEDIUM-DUTY MARKETOne feature that’s been a constant in Australia’s hotly contested medium-duty truck market is the unmatched dominance of Isuzu Trucks. Truck Power analyses IAL’s strategic approach to this core staple of the domestic truck market

“It’s our ability to intuitively and consistently get to the core of

Australian business requirements which continues to set us apart

from the competition.”

Building on close to 30 years of market-leading innovation, Isuzu Australia Limited has newly launched its F Series range, cementing itself at the top of the

medium-duty segment of the truck market.

The Isuzu F Series has steadily received industry-leading improvements since 1986, keeping pace with a rapidly changing Australian market.

In 2016, Isuzu is continuing its steadfast commitment to the range, with the development of brand new engine technology out of Japan and a range of clever updates to ensure just about every application is catered for.

WHAT’S NEW?The new 2016 Isuzu F Series launch is the most comprehensive and systemic upgrade to the Isuzu range in nearly a decade.

Described as a genuine game-changer within the

medium-duty segment, the new offering brings together a powerful mix of three decades of manufacturing and on-road experience, as well as industry-leading innovation.

Aside from a slick new exterior look, an evolution under the skin takes shape with the introduction of Isuzu’s high torque, low displacement new 4HK1 turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine.

Alternatively, there’s a new six-cylinder Isuzu 6HK1 engine with maintenance-free Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) for an ultra-reliable, low maintenance solution.

Rounding-out a complete road transport solution is the addition of Isuzu’s new torque convertor equipped automated manual transmission (TC-AMT), amid a range of other additions and enhancements.

A FRESH APPROACHIAL Chief Engineer, Product Strategy, Simon Humphries says the technology underpinning the

new range represents a more flexible strategy based on a proud medium-duty lineage of anticipating the needs of the customer.

“Looking at the new range from an historical perspective, we’ve taken particular heed of what’s operated well over the years, what’s been less successful, and, as always, the needs of our customers.

“It’s really been a case of catering to as many niche applications as possible and affording genuine choice for our customers,” he said.

“Historically, the Isuzu F Series range has been an extremely flexible, fit-for-purpose solution. We’ve worked hard to ensure that remains the case with this new line-up.

“When you look at the medium-duty market in isolation – Isuzu has consistently raised the bar over the last 30-odd years. Be it in the area of emissions, driveline or safety, our approach has always been

THE ROAD TO HERE THE EVOLUTION OF THE F SERIESThree decades in the making, the 2016 Isuzu F Series has arrived in Australia with the no-nonsense approach that’s to be expected of the country’s truck market leader. Truck Power takes a look at the pedigree of one of Australia’s most successful truck models

1966The F Series (as we know it

now) is developed in Japan as a medium-duty truck under the

name ‘TY’.

1970The TY is renamed ‘FORWARD’ for the Japanese domestic and

export markets.

1972General Motors Holden (GMH)

begins importing Isuzu trucks to Australia – initially marketed as ‘Bedford by Isuzu’ – from Japan.

1986Isuzu restyles its medium-duty JCS, SBR, SCR, JBR and JCR

models with a modernised cabin. The new range is launched under

the Isuzu F Series name.

1996A new F Series range is

introduced. The ‘aero cube’ cabin concept is adopted across both the N and F Series. This cab design is

retained for the next 12 years.

one of continual improvement and innovation. This 2016 F Series range is no different.”

GREEN CREDENTIALSIsuzu Australia Limited (IAL) Director and Chief Operating Officer Phil Taylor said Isuzu’s low displacement, low emissions engine (the 5.2 Litre new 4HK1) is the cleanest medium-duty Japanese diesel engine available on the Australian market.

“The new 4HK1 truly is ground-breaking technology out of Japan, and we’re delighted to be offering such a clean and environmentally friendly alternative in the marketplace.

“We’re all too aware that the aims and ambitions of many larger fleets, as well as owner drivers, are aligned to sourcing better outcomes for our environment. We’ve responded to that, in particular, with the new 4HK1 engine technology, which is the cleanest Japanese medium-duty diesel engine currently available.

“The evolution of the F Series has come to a head today in a landmark model range. We are confident we have provided our customers with the best available technology for a sustainable vehicle that will last the test of time,” Mr Taylor said.

THE JOURNEY BEGINSIn 1966, the year Sir Jack Brabham dominated Formula Two in his BT-18 Honda and was named Australian of the Year, Isuzu Motors Japan released their first medium-duty commercial vehicle known simply as the ‘TY’.

A few years later, in 1970, the TY received the name ‘FORWARD’. This was later shortened to F Series for the emerging Australian market of the time.

When General Motors Holden first began importing Isuzu trucks from Japan to Australia in 1972, few could have envisaged the lasting impact Isuzu would have on industry and the Australian truck market.

ISUZU F SERIES IN AUSTRALIAThe contemporary Australian Isuzu F Series range we’re most familiar with today can be traced back to 1986 when Isuzu restyled its medium-duty JCS, SBR, SCR, JBR and JCR models with a modernised cabin – launching them, collectively, under the Isuzu F Series nameplate.

Many of these earlier models had size on their side. The 1979 Isuzu JBR for example came equipped with a 5.8 litre, six-cylinder diesel engine emitting 97 kW and 343 Nm. Though scant on luxuries compared to today’s standards, the JBR boasted an AM radio and a heater – and that’s about it.

NEW CABSIn 1996, the F Series range was significantly enhanced by the addition of a new ‘aero-cube’ cabin concept for all new models. Another example of Isuzu setting the standard, the introduction of the aero-cube has been retained as a truck design staple for cab-over vehicles ever since.

WORLD-LEADINGAt the end of 2002, Isuzu Motors was the world’s number one medium-duty truck manufacturer, with worldwide production for the year coming in at 56,779 units, almost 13,500 units ahead of Ford (in second place).

Isuzu’s domination in the medium-duty segment – despite relatively tough conditions across world markets at the time – was proof of genuine product acceptance throughout the world.

Back in Australia the F Series underwent a major upgrade in 2003 which saw the largest new truck model roll-out in the country’s history.

The 2003 F Series range received a new family

of SiTEC turbocharged and intercooled ADR 80 compliant engines, benefiting from more torque in every model, while GVM ratings and wheelbases were increased in many models.

THE EVOLUTION CONTINUES2007 was a massive milestone in the story of the Isuzu F Series. Changes to the range provided truck buyers with significant enhancements in power, safety, and efficiency, while also offering large reductions in exhaust emissions across its 50-plus model variants.

The all-new Isuzu SiTEC SERIES II engines were the cleanest Japanese conventional diesel-powered engines available on the medium-duty market.

Isuzu also upped the ante on safety in 2007 with the introduction of a host of new features, such as driver’s SRS airbag and ABS brakes, as standard. Automated manual transmissions (AMT) were also introduced providing even smoother and more responsive gear changes.

SAFETY AND TECHNOLOGYFurther safety developments took shape in 2013 with all Isuzu F Series models adopting cornering lamps and passenger airbags.

A new, state-of-the-art digital audio visual equipment unit (DAVE) multimedia system was also introduced solidifying Isuzu’s commitment to be at the forefront of technological change. A masterstroke of its time, the introduction of Isuzu’s DAVE hardware laid the foundation for ongoing intelligent transport system (ITS) advancements such as electronic work diaries and telematics, to name but a few.

BIG DATA REVOLUTIONIsuzu’s locally developed telematics platform was introduced the following year, presenting owner-drivers and fleet managers the opportunity to build genuine efficiencies into their operations.

Acting much like an aircraft black box, Isuzu Telematics works in tandem with a server and on-board wireless devices to provide information such as live positioning, trip playback, geo-fencing and fleet and engine data.

2000The widely praised FVR, FTR and high-powered FRRs are

introduced. These strong performers are equipped with the

Isuzu 6HE1-TC engine and the MLD7Q seven-speed overdrive

transmission.

2003The Isuzu F Series model range expands significantly. For the first time ever, turbo-charged

and air-to-air intercooled engines are standard across the line-up,

with all complying to Euro III standards.

2007All-new 700P F Series are released with more power and torque across the range while adhering to strict

Euro IV emission standards. The Isuzu FSR 850 occupies a

unique position in the market. With a low tare weight and 14-tonne

GVM rating, it carries more payload than all 15-tonne GVM competitors.

AMT introduced.

2013Safety improvements featuring

cornering lamps and dual airbags happen across the range.

2016The F Series release in this year

offers superior safety, choice and emissions treatment with

improvements to power and torque.

“Isuzu has consistently raised the bar in the last 30-odd years. Be it in the area of

emissions, driveline or safety, our approach has always been one of continual improvement

and innovation.”

FEATURE

With its long-standing dedication to the road transport task in Australia, Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) has raised the bar yet again with an

innovative new approach.

Australia’s favourite tried and tested medium-duty champion, the Isuzu F Series*, is now available with two new and very diverse driveline technologies.

From now on, Isuzu medium-duty truck customers have a genuine choice depending on their application and preferences.

MORE CHOICEOperators can now specify an intelligent new F Series with a low displacement, high torque four-cylinder turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine – featuring the latest technology from Japan – mated to a torque convertor equipped automated manual transmission (TC-AMT).

Alternatively, there’s a new no-fuss, six-cylinder Isuzu 6HK1 engine with maintenance-free Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) for an ultra-reliable, low maintenance solution.

Whether it’s waste and refuse, cold chain logistics, traditional road freight or something out of the ordinary, the intelligent new Isuzu F Series range covers even more applications than the previous line-up. Just as welcome is the fact it also meets the specific needs of a whole host of niche applications.

A FRESH APPROACHIAL Chief Engineer, Product Strategy, Simon Humphries, said the engine technology underpinning the range represents a more cohesive and adaptable approach.

“With the new 2016 F Series range, we’ve developed the driveline technology to cater to an ever-changing market.

“We’ve listened closely to the requirements of our customers and taken note of the global trend toward lower displacement engines throughout the automotive world,” Mr Humphries said.

“Supplying niche applications areas with a fit-for-purpose, reliable engine solution while conserving green credentials was a major focus in developing this new engine technology.

“Importantly, this new range enhances a quality that Isuzu has always been known for – our ability to cater to broader market needs – while also filling those niche applications where ‘near enough’ will never cut it.”

ISUZU’S NEW 4HK1 ENGINE TECHNOLOGY Isuzu’s new 4HK1 represents brand new Japanese engine technology and there’s nothing quite like it in the Australian medium-duty truck market right now.

NEW TECHNOLOGY AND ALL-NEW HEIGHTS FOR ISUZU F SERIES

ENGINES

Drawing on all-new diesel engine technology, Isuzu’s new F Series has drawn a line in the sand in the medium-duty truck market. Isuzu’s new range marks the most prominent product development in the segment to date

The new 4HK1 is a low displacement, high horsepower diesel engine generating impressive power and torque ratings.

The 5.2 litre, four-cylinder, two-stage turbocharged and intercooled engine is available in two power ratings.

The 154 kW (210 PS) variant produces 726 Nm of torque; its more powerful counterpart posts 177 kW (or 240 PS) and a handy 765 Nm of torque.

The 210 PS variants include the Isuzu FRR, FRD and FSS 4x4 with GVMs spanning 10.7 to 11 tonnes. In these models, peak torque is increased by 14 per cent, and the new two-stage turbo technology provides 45 per cent more torque at 1,000 revs per minute.

The 240 horsepower models include the FRR at 11 tonnes GVM and FSR at 12 and 14 tonnes GVM respectively. For these models, the new 4HK1 replaces a six-cylinder engine, yet offers the same peak power and up to eight per cent more torque.

“The Isuzu new 4HK1 in the 2016 F Series can lay claim to being the

cleanest medium-duty Japanese diesel engine on the Australian market today.”

ENGINES

The addition of a clever two-stage turbocharger to the new 4HK1 incorporates a combination of low and high pressure turbochargers, which increases torque levels at low engine speed.

In addition to the two-stage turbocharger, almost every part of the previous Isuzu 4HK1 has been revised in the pursuit of a clean, green engine with excellent performance. Common rail injection pressure is increased by more than ten per cent to 200 MPa, the injectors themselves have an increased number of nozzles, the piston shape is changed, the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system is more accurately controlled, the intercooler size is increased by ten per cent and the intake cam profile is revised.

Isuzu F Series models fitted with the new 4HK1 engine also benefit from the inclusion of Isuzu’s Idle-Stop System (ISS), which works to produce impressive fuel economy figures by cutting engine use when the vehicle comes to a stop – for example, at traffic lights.

ISS is now standard in new 4HK1 4x2 models, except the model equipped with an engine driven power take-off (PTO) unit, and it helps both the 210 PS and 240 PS variants deliver class-leading fuel economy.

Recent analysis by Isuzu Australia shows that trucks in this class are idling at an average of 50 per cent of time in operation – so good fuel savings are anticipated from these models.

Isuzu’s data, relevant to the domestic market, confirms a seven per cent overall fuel saving in the new 4HK1, with the ISS system making-up three per cent of that total.

Depending on the chosen transmission, ISS works slightly differently in manual and automated

manual transmission (AMT) modes.

Should a manual transmission be required, ISS is engaged when the vehicle is stationary and in the neutral position with the clutch released. The Isuzu TC-AMT requires nothing more than firm pressure on the brake pedal to engage ISS and start saving fuel.

ISUZU’S NEW 4HK1: CLEAN AND GREENAn external injector for Isuzu’s diesel particulate diffuser or DPD system has been added to the new 4HK1 exhaust and emissions system.

The new external injector eliminates oil dilution through the regeneration process.

The new 4HK1 is certified to Japan’s Post New Long Term (PNLT) emissions standards, which are similar to Euro VI standards. Both Euro VI and PNLT standards are expected to be included as equivalents for ADR 80/04, the next heavy vehicle emissions standard under development.

When compared with Euro V emissions limits, Japan’s Post New Long Term (PNLT) standards require a reduction in nitrogen oxides (NOx) by 65 per cent and in particulate matter (PM) by 50 per cent.

Add ISS and low displacement technology to the mix and the Isuzu new 4HK1 can lay claim to being the cleanest, most advanced medium-duty Japanese diesel engine on the Australian market today.

ISUZU 6HK1 WITH DOCComplementing the new 4HK1 offering is Isuzu’s advanced 6HK1 DOC, Euro V engine, tailored for specific vocational applications.

The 7.8 litre water-cooled, six-cylinder direct

injection diesel engine generates 191 kW (260 PS) and 761 Nm of torque across a wide rev range, so there’s certainly enough grunt under the right foot, regardless of the task at hand.

The 6HK1 electronic control common rail injection system features ten per cent higher injection pressure and a new injector design, improving combustion efficiency. This equates to higher engine performance, lower emissions and lower fuel consumption.

The 6HK1 DOC is available in various Isuzu FRR, FSR, FSD, FTR and FTS models equipped with Isuzu’s own air-assisted six-speed manual transmission.

A two-pedal option is also available, with the Allison 2500 Series automatic transmission – featuring a torque convertor with a lock-up clutch – exclusive to the Isuzu F Series models with 6HK1 DOC engine.

The new 6HK1 with DOC has also found a home in a brand new model to hit the F Series line-up – the Isuzu FVR/D – available with a choice of transmissions, including the Allison MD 3000 auto or the ZF nine-speed air assisted manual.

DIESEL OXIDATION CATALYST (DOC)The exhaust and emissions system attached to the 6HK1 now comes fitted with a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), meaning no selective catalytic reduction or DPD regenerations for models so fitted. This is anticipated to be very popular in vocational applications.

It’s the only medium-duty engine on the market with neither a diesel particulate filter nor SCR,

meaning less driver intervention and less frequent service intervals.

An important end-use feature of the DOC system is its suitability for applications where high idle times, high PTO use and frequent stop-starting are a feature. Council service and elevated work platform trucks are perfect examples of the applicability of the 6HK1 DOC.

FIT-FOR-PURPOSE ENGINE TECHNOLOGIES

IAL National Sales Manager, Andrew Harbison, said Isuzu’s new 4HK1 engine and its robust 6HK1 DOC cousin underpin a range that’s been built to fill as many end uses as possible, while delivering power,

fuel economy and effective emissions control.

“Isuzu’s engineering approach has always been straight forward.

“Whatever it is we’re working to develop or refine, we keep the product – and its end use – very much at the heart of the process,” Mr Harbison said.

“With regards to these two distinct engine technologies, there’s no ‘fluff’.

“While quite different in terms of ultimate application, they’re both highly dependable and that’s what Isuzu is known for – honest, reliable, fit-for-purpose products that stand the test of time.” *Transport Industry Council (TIC) T-Mark data, Full Year

ISUZU GETS A REV-UP WITH NEW TRANSMISSIONWith the broadest range of two-pedal options in the medium-duty market, Isuzu Trucks has well and truly taken account of the growing interest in automatic transmissions. In these pages, Truck Power unpacks the options and applicability of transmissions in its new F series range

A driving force behind the development of Isuzu Australia Limited’s (IAL) new F Series medium-duty truck range was the capacity to offer truck customers genuine

and uninhibited choice.

To accomplish this, not only has brand-new engine technology been applied to the F Series line-up, but the circle has been closed with the introduction of Isuzu’s new torque convertor equipped automated manual transmission (TC-AMT).

The TC-AMT is available for all Isuzu FRR and FSR models equipped with Isuzu’s low displacement, high output new 4HK1 engine.

Isuzu’s TC-AMT sits alongside the Allison LCT 2500 and MD 3000 automatics applied to the 6HK1 engine offering, delivering more two-pedal models across the Isuzu F Series range than ever before.

In terms of transmission choice across the new range and depending on the model, Isuzu customers requiring an automatic transmission now have the choice of the brand new 3rd Generation Isuzu Torque Converter AMT, the Allison 2500 Series automatic or the Allison MD 3000.

For those preferring a manual set-up, there’s a choice between the six-speed Isuzu MZW6 and the highly regarded ZF nine-speed manual transmission, depending on model.

A SMARTER WAY“From now on, we’re offering a smarter way to operate a truck,” IAL Chief Engineer, Product Strategy, Simon Humphries said.

“When you consider the refinements we’ve made in terms of transmission options and add those to the long list of other key driveline and fuel-saving improvements across the new F Series range, a compelling case can be made.

“The availability of a torque converter AMT option means customers can experience a more ‘car-like’ drive performance on a day-to-day basis. This has some pertinent advantages for fleet managers or operators in relation to driver availability and usage.

“Not only that, the broader transmission options across the new Isuzu F Series range equate to superior choice and potential applicability to a huge range of end uses, and that’s exactly what we set out to achieve.”

THE 2016 F SERIES TC-AMTIsuzu’s new torque converter AMT differs from the previous design in that the fluid coupling used in the earlier models has been upsized and upgraded to a full torque converter, similar to that found in full automatic transmissions.

A new element, or ‘stator’, essentially alters oil flow within the converter function itself, and when combined with several other parts, means overall torque is multiplied by a factor of 1.45 to 1.

The boost in torque production provides increased acceleration from a standing start or at lower engine speeds. This performance feature is one that Simon Humphries says Australian transport operators have increasingly come to expect.

“Our previous AMT models provide dual-function flexibility to best suit changing driving conditions, and have proved particularly popular with motor home manufacturers, rental companies, and metropolitan and urban fleets, who battle the rigours of stop-start traffic on a daily basis,” he said.

“The addition of a torque converter AMT to the new F Series range is a direct result of those, and other Isuzu customers anticipating responsiveness from a standing start.”

FURTHER REFINEMENTSThe lock-up clutch damper characteristic within the Isuzu TC-AMT has also been refined (compared to the previous AMT), softening clutch engagement and disengagement, and thereby improving NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) levels of the transmission.

Other enhancements which improve the 3rd Generation Isuzu TC-AMT include heat treatment for the friction plate, separation plate and the hub of the gearshift clutch. This equates to component durability and longevity within the transmission itself – in withstanding the torque increases and the heat generated as a result.

ISUZU F SERIES AUTO OPTIONSCustomers of new F Series models equipped with the simple and reliable Isuzu 6HK1 DOC engine, including FRR, FSR, FSD, FTR and FTS models, have the choice of specifying the trusted Allison 2500 Series six-speed automatic transmission.

Tried and tested, the Allison 2500 Series is

renowned for faster acceleration and the ability to get up to, and work within, the best available duty-cycle faster and more efficiently.

Also flying the flag for Allison in the new entry level Isuzu FVD and FVR variants is the American manufacturers’ MD 3000 six-speed automatic, specifically suited to vocational applications with high idle time or frequent stop-starting.

All Allison transmissions installed by Isuzu now feature synthetic long-life oil from initial factory fill, for significantly extended service intervals.

Further up the F Series range, the high-power 300PS version of Isuzu’s 6HK1 engine can be optioned with the MD 3000 on 6x2 models or MD 3500 on 6x4 models.

ISUZU F SERIES MANUAL OPTIONSIsuzu’s MZW six-speed, air-assisted manual transmission can also be applied to a large selection of the new 2016 Isuzu F Series line-up, including models ranging from 10.7 to 15 tonnes GVM.

Models in this category include representatives from the FRR, FRD, FSR, FSD and FTR variants. The FSS and FTS 4x4 models also feature the same Isuzu manual transmission as standard.

The highly respected ZF nine-speed air assisted transmission rounds out the manual options at the heavy end of the 2016 F Series range, applicable to the FVR, FVD, FVM, FVL, FVZ and the 24-tonne GVM FVY model variants.

BROAD APPLICATION COVERAGE“The 2016 F Series has been purpose designed to appeal to the broadest range of customers and applications across the Australian road transport industry,” Mr Humphries said.

“The transmission choice in the 2016 F Series range clearly illustrates this. We are pleased to offer the broadest range of two-pedal options in the medium-duty market, courtesy of the new 3rd Generation TC-AMT and a wider range of models available fitted with Allison automatic transmissions.

“Our 2016 F Series range offers something for everyone, and the transmissions are a case in point,” he said.

“The 2016 F Series has been purpose designed to appeal

to the broadest range of customers and applications across the Australian road

transport industry.”

TRUCK OF THE YEARLEE BROTHERS FENCING Lee Brothers Fencing credits its stellar reputation to quality equipment, including its large fleet of Isuzu trucks.

In operation for more than 60 years in Victoria, the company supplies and installs high-security fencing for Victorian detention and prison centres. Its FSR 850 is used to transport steel and fencing installations to work sites.

“With its long tray option and carrying capability we have no limits in what we can achieve,” said owner Damien Lee.

THE BLUE MEXICAN Furniture removal company The Blue Mexican uses Isuzu trucks exclusively for their runs between Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

“We have had a string of Isuzus,” said owner Ben Sabel. “They are not thirsty on fuel and the aftersales back-up over the years has been exceptional.”

The company’s newest Isuzu is an FRR 600‎ X-Long, which Ben can’t wait to put to work.

“They’re such a dependable workhorse,” he said.

TANZERS FARM FRESH WATERMELONS AND PUMPKINS Michael and Christina Tanzer bought their NPR 200 a year ago to carry produce to market.

The model’s eight-foot wide alloy tray and tommy gate lifter makes easy work of lifting produce bins on and off the vehicle. The Tanzers say their truck doesn’t want for power, even when towing a fully loaded tandem trailer.

“Not only a brilliant tradies truck but a brilliant farm truck,” they said.

WALKER AND BUTCHER TRANSPORT Dealing in livestock freight is no easy business, and Roger Walker and Corrie Butcher are relying on their new Isuzu FRR 600 to help share the load.

The truck is used mainly for transporting live freight, though the stock crate can easily be removed for general freight.

The couple are looking forward to clocking-up the kilometres in this model after their last Isuzu toted up over 800,000 km in nine years.

“This new truck is a whole lot smoother and quieter,” said Roger.

BOW TIE REMOVALS Based in Matraville, New South Wales, Bow Tie Removals has entered its NLR 200 into Isuzu’s Truck of the Year competition, one of seven Isuzus in the fleet.

“Our special little truck has huge side access for our purpose built storage modules. The size and shape makes for easy access into tight lanes and streets around Sydney’s inner suburbs,” said owner Joe Schubert.

ANNETTE AND BARRY HALTON Annette and Barry Halton have travelled with a campervan for years – but they’ve never had as many compliments on their rig until their latest trip, in an Isuzu.

The couple’s Isuzu NLR 200 is mounted with a slide-on camper, and has all the comfort, visibility and power they need on the road. The Haltons also appreciate the Isuzu’s automated manual transmission (AMT), which Barry Halton says “is brilliant”.

“The truck is so versatile we use it with the camper on or off. We are very happy with it,” he said.
