LSA MEMBER OF THE MONTH — AARON ROGERS

LSA Officers

Aaron Rogers is a silent but faithful member of L.S.A. for many years. He has been instrumental in getting fabulous catered Christmas dinners for LSA’s Holiday events and Aaron is a willing worker in other areas within association. His occupation was focused on one work place, General Motors Corporation. Upon graduation from Denby High School, Aaron en-tered the work force of the auto industry. His father, a po-lice officer for the City of Detroit, did not like Aaron’s choice, but accepted it. Starting at the bottom of the chain at G.M.’s gear and axel plant, Aaron worked his way up

to a managerial position. After retirement, he needed something constructive to do. At the urging of John Hubel, CML, Aaron began apprenticing with John. Aaron quickly learned to install and repair many kinds of locks and became fairly adept at picking locks. (I needed his talent many times) His many years working with assembling parts gave Aaron a special talent of decision making in what seemed to be a difficult situation on many jobs. I remember a time he and I were called to open a locked car that had the keys in the ignition. We were in an area with none of our locksmith tools. After two failed at-tempts, Aaron went to his car and came back with a batten (it is a fiber glass slat used to stiffen a sail when a boat is sailing). With a modification we were in. Aaron and his wife Sandra have been married for over 50 years and have two chil-dren, five grand-children and a great grandchild. .

Another Business Secret -- “Are You Listening?”

As a married man I have always been told by my wife that I was-n’t listening to her, and she is often correct! There are always distrac-tions that seem to get in the way of really listening to someone. I want to impress upon you how much listening does matter. In the business sense of course, I am sure that you are not interested in my marital issues. Most of our customers / clients contact us by telephone. Sure some are by text, email, snail mail, but predominately by telephone. When we answer the phone, we are usually multi-tasking. Rarely are we sitting, waiting for the phone to ring. We have our hands and minds working on some project or another. We may have a customer in front of us and a few waiting. When the phone rings we are not always listening carefully enough. I had an occa-sion today to remind myself of that. In this case, I actually called a prospective cus-tomer and listened to what he had to say. I had been given a lead by a friend of mine. The specifics of the conversation are unimportant, the outcome was more interesting. The shortened version of the story is that this customer wanted a free estimate on a pro-ject. By listening to him carefully, I understood his needs and his budget and was able to determine quickly that based on his budget, he could not afford this project. By lis-tening carefully I saved myself a trip across town that would have wasted my time and his. Please understand, I wasn’t rude, I gave him a “ballpark” price and it was over his budget. There was no need to move forward. We ended the conversation amicably and I told him that when his budget permitted, I would be happy to visit him and supply a formal estimate. Listening is key (excuse the pun) when someone is speaking to you. You will find out much about their needs and thoughts. These callers are relying upon you to be the expert. If they had the answers they would not be calling. Sometimes callers will tell you information that will make you decline the job. “Well it’s not really my house I need you to open, but it belongs to a good friend”. At least I hope you would decline that job! Often I will listen and try to help the caller over the phone. “Did you try a shot of WD-40 on that sticky lock?” “If your husband is on his way home, why not wait for him to unlock the door?” This could very well save me a wasted trip and a clash with an angry spouse. Take the time to listen. Listening carefully and asking the right questions will help save you a lot of time and anguish.

PRESIDENTIAL PENNINGS—RAY SINAI, CML

PAGE 6 VOLUME 26, NO. 8 The Locksmith Security Association of Michigan

I am a regular patron at a local restaurant. I often sit there at lunchtime, order a sand-wich, complete some paperwork, order some materials for jobs, answer some calls, I even work on my laptop. It is my office away from my office that serves meals. When I returned from vacation, I noticed that they had new menus. I must add, very nice menus, professionally done. What is the true purpose of new menus in a Restaurant? Price increases, of course! Can we be upset about price increases as consumers? It won’t get you anywhere. You can choose to eat your meal elsewhere. We must keep in mind that operating expenses, the cost of goods sold and the tax rates have all risen. So where do you fit into the scheme of things? Have you reevaluated your costs lately? When was the last time you had a price increase? How many of the manufacturers have had recent price increases? In March, Ingersoll Rand had price increases. Did you raise your retail price to compensate for the added wholesale price? I honestly must admit that I struggle over each one of my price increases. Will the cus-tomers get mad, will they stop using my services, or will they refuse to pay? The answer is always an astounding “NO”. It has been a few months since my last price increase and I can’t remember even one complaint. Oh sure, some people will always complain about the price, I call those people “former customers”. Generally, people realize that you are in business to make a profit, a living for yourself and your family. Take a look at your pric-ing. Are you happy with the paycheck you are taking home? If not, change is in order. I want to take this time to thank Kevin Smith, our Vice President for taking over for me while I was on vacation last month. I was out in Washington State visiting my daughter on Whidbey Island (off the coast of Seattle in the Puget Sound). It was quite a different ex-perience for my wife and I as we had never been to that part of the country. Whidbey Is-land, in fact was just in the national news today, as I write this article. There was a land-slide there that sent one home into Puget Sound. Another 15 homes are in danger. Glad to be back home now and looking forward to our visit from Mr. Dan McGowan at our meeting. Dan is the rep for CompX which covers Fort Locks, Timberline and a few others. Dan is also sponsoring our dinner this month. I Hope to see all of you there. Regards, Ray
