All Skills Day Horse Project
By Kacie Watson, Sr. leader for the Motherlode 49ers horse project
All Skills Day was an informative and fun day for 4-H members to learn about their animal, take proficiency tests, enter their photography, sewing, and ceramics in the home arts portion of All Skills day, and shop at the 4-H mall! The horse project had many fun activities and learning experiences, including a showmanship demo and clinic, a fun horse body parts game in preparation for proficiency tests, a farrier demonstration, and a table set up with information about bits. The showmanship clinic was wonderful, first, all of the members split up into groups and worked with a Jr. or Sr. leader on the rules and maneuvers of showmanship. After everyone rotated between the three horses, all of the participating members had a chance to use one of the horses in a simple showmanship pattern. After everyone had a chance to show a horse in the mock show, then a few Sr. leaders went over the body parts of a horse, letting members show other members where the stifle, withers, fetlock, ect. on a horse are, in preparation for the proficiency tests. The farrier demo was very informative, with lots of visuals and information about laminitis, thrush, and founder. There was also a bit info table. The table was covered in bits with information about each different bit and the level horse that should use them. Members could also take a booklet home, a helpful reference guide to use when selecting a new bit for their horse. In conclusion, I think everyone had a great time and learned a lot! Come see us next year!
