Neighbors column connects Bob and Bob

Resident Bob Taylor (right) and Fargo Forum columnist Bob Lind talk about a recent question that appeared in Lind’s Neighbors column. A woman had written in and asked who wrote a specific poem. Bob Taylor saw the column and connected with the newspaper columnist to say that he knew the answer and could even recite the whole poem from memory. He had memorized it as a child. The poem, A Letter Home, was written by James W. Foley and brought the two men together for some good discussion and sharing of memories—just like neighbors do.

Superman returns: Meet club member Elwood RiekeAfter successfully beating digestive track cancer in 2010, Elwood experienced leg pain. The pain progressed to weakness, and at least twice, his legs gave out.

“I started using a walker to get around,” recalls Elwood. After several medical visits and still no clear prognosis, Elwood’s doctor suggested he start physical therapy, which led him to Touchmark.

“The physical therapist recommended that I do my therapy in the pool at Touchmark,” says Elwood.

That spring, Elwood returned to the Mayo Clinic, where he had visited during his cancer battle.

“The doctor explained that it was caused by one of three things,” says Elwood. “One: a traumatic event. Two: a virus. Three: reaction to a vaccine. I was happy to have an affirming answering and know I’d get better.”

Armed with this new information and desire to strengthen his body, Elwood maintained his exercises at Touchmark’s pool five times a week. By that fall, he was no longer using the walker.

Today, Elwood has the occasional problem with balance but shares, “I can say I’m back to 95%.” He continues the fitness routine he started two years ago: pool exercises and weight lifting. “If it hadn’t been for the good graces of Touchmark’s pool and warm water, I don’t know where I’d have been.”

Recently, another club member shared with Elwood, “You’re Superman. We remember how little you could walk, and look at you now.”

Betsy also took crochet lessons and learned how to do finishing work on knit garments as well as hardanger needlework lessons to make Christmas items. Betsy has entered her needlework in two shows and won both times.

“Proper matting and framing makes a huge difference in overall appearance of final works,” shares Betsy.

Changing times … and changing roles “Women’s normal occupations in general run to a creative life, or contemplative life, or saintly life.”

– Anne Munroe Lindbergh

The often-stated assumption that “older adults do not like change” is a myth—a dishonorable myth, especially if mainstream marketing gurus prevail.

The years from college or high school graduation can be filled with exciting (and

almost constant) challenges and opportunities. Women striving to make it in a traditional man’s world and still find time for family and domestic commitments are the usual example of how much things have changed since Ann Morrow Lindbergh penned her words. But the world of men in those same decades is—or can be—a lifestyle of striving to succeed, spend time with the family, stay active and fit, and more.

For those over 65 years (or whatever age one selects for retirement), the options can be very different. The years of juggling work schedules, kids’ activities, career, and home/cars/landscaping maintenance, etc. may be greatly reduced or over—especially for a resident living in a Touchmark community.

The opportunities for creativity, contemplation, and maybe even “sainthood” are available. The dangerous myth of inactivity in one’s older years does not apply to the hundreds of residents that I have met in Touchmark communities.

To pursue personal goals in lifelong learning, community service, teaching, or sharing skills and successes at Touchmark or the broader community, contact Anne-Marie Fitz, Life Enrichment/Wellness director.

The next chapter is here, and wishes, hopes, and dreams are waiting.
