FAC ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016

Snapshots and Stories of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center

With 171 theatre performances, 12 major art exhibitions, over 300 classes at Bemis School of Art, and the announcement of an historic alliance with Colorado College, 2016 was truly extraordinary.

The past year brought significant developments and achievements

to the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. With our gallery walls lined with works by artists from Georgia O’Keeffe to Salvador Dalí, we lived up to our reputation as a cultural pillar in the Pikes Peak region, and were named “second only to the Denver Art Museum as the place to find important shows in Colorado” by Art Ltd. In the theatre, we wowed audiences from

Colorado Springs and beyond with showstoppers like 9 to 5: The Musical, Driving Miss Daisy and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Meanwhile, our Bemis School of Art pioneered a number of important and inspirational community projects.

In August 2016, the Fine Arts Center announced an historic alliance with Colorado College. The partnership champions the missions of both

organizations while expanding innovative learning opportunities, arts programming, and cultural resources for the greater Colorado Springs community. The goal of the alliance goes beyond merging two existing organizations: it seeks to create something new, ground-breaking, and forward-looking.

We rounded off a brilliant year with our season opening Gala. The Gala

is our biggest event of the year, and in 2016 it was especially significant, celebrating a great end to our season, while also welcoming the start of a new season, and our exciting future with Colorado College! At this historic time for the Fine Arts Center, Colorado College, and Colorado Springs alike, the evening was the perfect occasion to take stock of the great things that the FAC experienced over the past season, and the greater things to come.

Snapshots of the Year

November 2015 We showcased the exhibition, Collections Surréaliste, featuring three paintings by René Magritte, and works on paper by other significant European artists including Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí, Kay Sage, Herbert Bayer, and Roberto Matta. There was also a local component entitled Springs Surreal, featuring Colorado Springs surrealist artists, Lorelei Beckstrom, Aaron Graves, Kay Williams Johnson, and Chris Sedgwick.

December 2015 We celebrated the Holidays with White Christmas live on the mainstage, and honored our military community by giving away 200 tickets to military members and their families for the New Year’s Eve performance.

January 2016 Award-winning and regional favorite Colorado band, The Haunted Windchimes, returned for their fourth sold-out performance at the FAC. Also in January, the Pikes Peak Arts Council gave the FAC’s production of Buyer & Cellar the Make ‘Em Laugh award at the annual PPAC Awards which honors outstanding creative performances and exhibitions of the region each year.

February 2016 We welcomed Margaret Cho to the stage, drawing in an audience from around Colorado to see the famous “Agent Provocateur of Stand-Up.”

September 2015 The Forbes Travel Guide listed the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center as an “undiscovered arts-and-culture treasure” in their list of 13 Art Trips You Need to Take.

October 2015 We kicked off the month with JAM FAC – a street art festival featuring the opening of the museum exhibition El Mac: Aerosol Exalted – bringing over 650 people to the FAC for live Hip Hop music, break dancing, and a graffiti mural demo.

March 2016 We celebrated the legacy of Colorado Springs artist Frank Mechau. His life as an artist and his work shaped this region in general, and the Fine Arts Center in particular.

April 2016 Our Museum Society members united for an art-lovers’ trip to the nation’s capital in Washington, D.C. The trip featured visits to some of the country’s most renowned galleries, as well as private collections and artists’ studios.

May 2016 We were fortunate to receive our most generous gift since 2007. Catharine and Bart Holaday donated $1 million to the FAC to fund an endowment for interactive art exhibitions to foster engagement and discovery and build new audiences.

June 2016 We celebrated both old and new with the exhibition All New Women, showcasing unique artistic takes on women who change the world, including portraits by John Singer Sargent, Cindy Sherman, Lyle Ashton Harris, and Sara Ware Howsam.

July 2016 The Theatre’s Youth Repertory Ensemble took over the mainstage with a magnificent production of Thoroughly Modern Millie, which showcased the youth talent in our professional theatre training course with an extraordinary sell-out show!

August 2016 This was a very exciting month both for the Fine Arts Center and Colorado College as we announced our plans to join forces in an historic alliance!

A special exhibition featuring nearly 50 works by 26 artists, highlighting more than a dozen by Georgia O’Keeffe.

Springs Surreal Oct 24, 2015 – Feb 7, 2016

Works by four Colorado Springs-based artists, Lorelei Beckstrom, Aaron Graves, Kay Williams Johnson, and Chris Sedgwick, each working within the realms of dreamscape, fantasy, ready-made, and chance.

Collections Surréaliste Nov 7, 2015 – Jan 3, 2016

In the Garden of the Gods July 18 – Oct 11, 2015

A celebration of our majestic Colorado landscape, this exhibition included images by Thomas Moran, Birger Sandzen, Archie Musick, Laura Gilpin, and Peter Max among many others, and honored the 20th Anniversary of the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center.

El Mac: Aerosol Exalted Oct 3, 2015 – Jan 10, 2016

Featuring El Mac, an internationally renowned graffiti artist whose gorgeous large-scale works blur the lines between fine art and graffiti along with local Colorado artist, Fuse.

Anderson & Low: City of Mines Oct 10, 2015 – Feb 14, 2016

Jonathan Anderson and Edwin Low describe the sense of wonder that the Colorado town of Victor – the City of Mines – has instilled in them over many years of visiting and photographing this place.

Spreading Its Wings: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Ron and Una Brasch Collection Oct 3, 2015 – March 20, 2016

These visionary artists have learned to identify unconventional materials and reimagine their use in service of communicating aspects of their lives and experiences.

All New Women June 11 – Sept 18, 2016

This innovative exhibition paired the esteemed portraiture of John Singer Sargent with provocative self-portrait photographs by contemporary artist Cindy Sherman, as well as Lyle Ashton Harris, and local artist, Sara Ware Howsam, making visual statements about trailblazing women who forged new paths for the next generations.

Gary Emrich: Promise Jan 30 – May 15, 2016

A combination of photography and film in this elegant, playful, provocative, and often humorous exhibition by a Colorado-based artist whose work has been exhibited for over 30 years

FAC Legacy Series: Frank Mechau March 5 – May 15, 2016

This exhibition spanned Frank Mechau’s life as an artist, and is the fifth offering in the FAC Legacy Series. Frank Mechau is among the greatest artists associated with the early 20th century development of Colorado art.

Salvador Dali: Inferno, Purgatorio, Paradiso May 21 – Oct 30, 2016

This exhibition featured an exquisite group of Salvador Dalí woodblock prints, featuring depictions of chapters from Dante’s The Divine Comedy, recently accessioned into the FAC’s permanent collection.

Under the Big Top June 11 – Sept 18, 2016

Internationally renowned artists Cindy Sherman, Edgar Britton, and Walt Kuhn, and Marc Chagall captured the spectacle of the circus.

Stephen Batura: A Reservoir of Occurrences June 11 – Sept 18, 2016

Exquisite paintings based upon the historical images of little-known Denver photographer Charles Lillybridge.

STORIES OF SUCCESS

JAM FAC Wins “Engaging Community Event Showcasing Music” Award

In October 2015, the FAC celebrated the opening of El Mac: Aerosol Exalted with JAM FAC, a street art festival that brought over 650 people to celebrate.

Artists El Mac and Fuse created a mural on a wall in the courtyard while hun-dreds of people watched, danced, ate, and drank. There was a B-Boy Battle team competition, music by DJ Gravity, DJ Prominent, and DJ Lazy Eyez, performances by MC StoneyBertz, BullHead*ded, and The ReMINDers, as well as multiple local food trucks for visitors to enjoy.

The event attracted a new audience and welcomed many new faces to the FAC. We were proud and grateful that the success of this event was recognized at the PPAC annual awards as an “Engaging Community Event Showcasing Music.”

On the Stage

The FAC Theatre Company presents a professional season of theatre each year, produced right here at the Fine Arts Center. Thanks to

the brilliance and professionalism of our Theatre Department, 25% of our performances were sold out in our 2015-2016 season with a total of 1,697 subscriptions sold and more than 40,000 tickets issued to theatre performances throughout the year.

Backstage Specials The mission of the Performing

Arts Department at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center is to use the power of theatre to entertain, enlighten, and enrich our community. Our venues provide artistic discovery and spectacle. The FAC’s vision is to be a cultural and economic anchor, providing world-class programming to an ever-expanding audience through these areas: FAC Theatre Company, Curtain Call Society, Theatre Education, and Community Outreach.

Fine Arts Center Theatre School The FAC Theatre School offers year-round training programs for aspiring thespians, with the bulk of the programming occurring in the summer. Through the courses offered, we provide engaging, innovative, high-quality, professional theatre education for all ages, abilities, and levels of interest, aiming to provide opportunities for talented and creative students to grow.

Curtain Call Society Started in 2005, Curtain Call is a membership-based affinity group of close to 100 patrons of the theatre. Members enjoy cocktail parties, dinners, and talks on opening nights of all mainstage productions, post-show receptions, invitations to selected rehearsals, an annual awards party, and travel opportunities.

EventsThrough the year we have enjoyed opening up our stage to

present shows that delight even those who aren’t theatre lovers. When space and time allows, the FAC co-presents or rents space for the work of local organizations in our theatres.

Putting Rising Stars On Stage

MEET ARIELLE MIAGKOVTell me about your experience of theatre so far.

I’ve been doing theatre since the eighth grade. I’ve done a couple of technical classes, and next summer will be my fifth year with Youth Rep. It’s life-changing. I really was a different person before I came into the Youth Rep program. It was really terrifying the first year. A lot of people had experience already; I was dropped into a world of people who liked theatre and knew that they wanted to major in it. Even though next year will be my fifth year, every year is different. Nathan is just really aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and he’s hell-bent on working on those weaknesses with you. He lets us make bold choices, understand the characters, and interpret the script in our own ways. It’s scary to be told as a teenager that you can be right. Usually we’re told that only adults are right — Nathan’s not like that. He might occasionally disagree with our choices, but it’s making those choices that is important. It can be scary to put yourself out there, but it’s worth it.

The Youth Repertory Theatre program is one of the incredible ways that the FAC connects with young people in the Pikes Peak region.

It is the only professional training program for student actors and design technicians in the region, offering those interested in pursuing careers in performance and/or design and technical theatre a five- week intensive training program. Each year, students work with qualified and professional teaching staff, choreographers, directors and designers to produce a professional play. The 2016 Youth Rep’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie was a roaring success, with sold out performances and standing ovations. Casey Fetters and Arielle Miagkov are two members of the Colorado Springs community who have grown up taking part in the Youth Rep program. Extraordinary young people like these two are the fabric of the FAC, coming back year after year because of the quality of our programs.

MEET CASEY FETTERS What has Youth Rep taught you?

I’ve been taking classes at the FAC since I was six. Every year it’s different and keeps getting better. I speak for everyone when I say that Nathan Halvorson (program director) is the most important mentor in our lives. His directing and teaching style is all about the students and the actors. He got into directing because he didn’t feel as though he had a voice as an actor, so his priority with us is every day to ask, “what do we think?” A lot of the time, especially in high school, directors can be very specific and prescriptive. Nathan’s not like that — he asks us what we want to do — he gives us a voice. Being forced to be the creative one has helped me immensely.

Art School

The FAC’s Bemis School of Art offers more than 300 classes each year in just about every medium imaginable, for ages two to adult. Offering opportunities to take a wide range of classes including jewelry, ceramics, cartooning, drawing,

painting, encaustic, photography, and more, classes run in three sessions, bringing in around 3,000 students each year.

Here’s a taste of what else you might find at the art school outside of the typical regularly scheduled classes:

Art History & Architecture – A variety of local, regional, and world-wide art and architecture courses.

Wine & Watercolor – A fun and relaxed approach to art, using varied techniques to create multiple works of art inspired by upcoming exhibitions, topical themes, or other works of art.

Military Artistic Healing – Award-winning programs that assist participants in increasing their personal management of life stressors through artistic and written self-expression. Creativity is often overlooked as a tool that promotes healing and trauma resolution. In this program, self-expression ignites self-motivated behavioral changes while simultaneously helping veterans and active military gain the skills necessary for coping with stress and loss.

Art School Coordinated Programs

Art History Excursions – Opportunities to travel with other fine art enthusiasts to local and regional museums. Two trips to the Denver Art Museum were hosted in 2015.

Discovery Guides – Several family-friendly themed booklets to be used throughout the Fine Arts Center to further dimensionalize the experience for our visitors. The guides include fun facts, interactive activities, and games in themes like Sculpture, Architecture, and Tactile Gallery.

Student and Instructor Exhibitions – Throughout the year artworks are exhibited off-site by students and/or instructors. Venues have included Pikes Peak Library District, Bemis School of Art Gallery (FAC), Imagination Celebration, City Hall, and more.

Annual Holiday Sale (Instructors) – A juried arts sale, the Bemis Fine Art Sale offers exhibition and sales opportunities for our teachers and students who are also local artists. Free to the public, the event features a primary focus on visual artists.

Family Adventure Days – A free opportunity for families to get a taste of the art school’s rich, multidimensional learning experience for parents and children alike. Each Family Adventure Day offers a variety of hands-on art projects and artist demonstrations, serving 300-500 people of all ages each time.

Museum Free Day Activities – On the third Friday of each month, the FAC offers free admission to the museum galleries while Bemis instructors offer hands-on activities to visiting patrons.

School Tour Program – Visual Art Tours, art and culture tours, custom designed tours, theatre tours, writing and tactile gallery tours are included in this program. Docents provide guided

tours for groups of all ages while Bemis School of Art instructors provide hands-on art lessons for the Visual Art Tours.

Adult Tour Program – General tours given to groups, custom-designed tours, and architectural and historical tours. Docents have also been trained by MOMA for Bridging Memories, a program designed for participants with dementia, from the Meet Me at MOMA program.

Rocky Mountain Health Care Brain Care – Providing art and drama classes that allow participants to express themselves verbally and with body language, while assisting participants in increasing personal management through artistic and written self-expression.

The Bemis School of Art is instrumental in bringing a fun, safe, and welcoming environment for personal expression of creativity to the

Colorado Springs community. With tours, excursions, exhibitions, and free Family Adventure Days, the FAC is an approachable and inviting space for everyone. Around 5,000 people attend these programs each year. Through 2016, 4,200 people took tours of the FAC.

Some of the ways we are engaging the community:

with a long history offering art and acting instruction set in the lush forest at the 400-acre La Foret Conference and Retreat Center. Alice Bemis Taylor, one of the three benefactresses of the FAC, had her summer home at La Foret, and the Taylor Memorial chapel built in 1929 was designed by FAC architect John Gaw Meem. Students experience a variety of artistic styles as they explore different techniques of visual and performing arts.

La Plata Communities – Art classes were offered at Cordera with support from the YMCA.

Pikes Peak Library District – We worked together to further the mission of both organizations by expanding arts education, demonstrations, and exhibitions at Library 21C.

Pikes Peak Woodturners – One of the oldest woodturning organizations and a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) became housed at the Bemis School of Art. The club offers classes

and demos at the FAC and serves the broader Colorado Springs area with a member base that draws from places within and beyond. Their primary goal is to share woodturning knowledge and experience with members and interested visitors.

Youth Documentary Academy (YDA) – A program that provides intensive media and documentary film training to high school students from underserved communities in southern Colorado. By using documentary film as a vehicle for creative self-expression, students who participate in YDA become more deeply connected to their peers, to the community in which they live, and to their own personal voices. In addition to developing technical proficiency through lectures, exercises, and workshops, students work in groups to produce their own documentaries. The program also introduces students to college preparedness competencies as part of the curriculum’s content. At the conclusion of the programs, students screen their films to the public in the FAC theatre.

Art School Partnerships

UCCS Credit Program – Select courses are available for academic credit through the Extended Studies Program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Emily Griffith Center – This is a collaborative program with The Griffith Centers for Children, a nonprofit organization that helps troubled children to become healthy, participating, productive members of society. The students at The Griffith Centers for Children are at-risk and low-income, up to 90% of whom have mental health issues. 

District #11 Talented in Art – The goal of this program, a collaboration of more than 25 years with District #11, is to challenge and accelerate advanced art students in grades 3-5. Its is intended to develop the students’ academic potential and propel them forward in art with an in-depth comprehensive understanding of visual arts.

La Foret Art and Acting Summer Day Camp – A special partnership

community about the power arts can have in the healing process. For active-duty military veterans and their families we offer award-winning, and often life-changing, courses to provide healing opportunities for those dealing with trauma and post-traumatic stress issues. The arts have been proven to enhance coping skills, manage stress, and strengthen a sense of self.

We are incredibly proud that Kim Le Nguyen, who teaches the Military Artistic Healing classes, won the 2016 Joe Henjum Hero Award, which recognizes a Coloradan who, “supports our military members and their families of all services to include Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, or recently discharged veterans. The recipient is judged by THFC [The Home Front Cares] Board of Directors to have made a most significant contribution to the welfare of the families of those who have deployed in harm’s way.” Nguyen was also named a 2014 Woman of Influence in Colorado Springs by the Colorado Springs Business Journal.

MEET KIM NGUYENWhat did you want to achieve through the classes?

I want to teach expressive techniques to all, whether it is an active, wounded, or retired military personnel, or a family member – how to use different mediums and processes to express and then release any toxicity that keeps them from being balanced and whole.

What have you learned from your students?

I’ve learned that they are truly my heroes. After all they’ve been through, they continue showing up. They show up at an art reception with a large crowd even though they prefer to be by themselves; they share their stories even though they are being triggered to recall all the haunting images in their mind; and most importantly, they rebuild their lives each day because they are resilient and they are American.

MEET TOMMY DARBE Tommy Darbe, who first participated in the Military Artistic Healing program in 2013, has since blossomed into a full-time artist.

Tell me about yourself Tommy.

I am a retired Navy veteran – I was in the navy for 20 years. I came into the Military Artistic Healing program because I was diagnosed with PTSD. It has taken me a long time to be able to talk about this; I collapsed with severe depression to the point where I was ready to commit suicide. This program allowed me to express those feelings in a positive way – to put things on paper that I couldn’t express in any other medium. It gave me a new lease on life – it saved my life. I would not be here today if I hadn’t gotten that help. So many vets commit suicide when they come home because it doesn’t matter where you go, you will see things that give you trauma. For me, it was an accumulation of 20 years of stress and emotion.

Kim, the class instructor, just won an award for her work – how was your experience working with her?

Kim has an amazing capacity to interpret your art. When she first did so, it was pretty scary for me but it’s amazing how your subconscious can pick out colors and shapes that express what’s inside. She’s an amazing woman – she’s very deserving. She has a heart for veterans that never quits. Kim can get through to you without forcing her way in – she gets through in a quiet way.

Youth Documentary Academy

It sounds like in making such a personal documentary, you must have learned a lot about yourself. How did it feel to put such personal things into a film?

Well, it was scary – these thoughts, these things were one of my biggest secrets. So I was worried about what people would think. I got really nervous, but then I also thought that giving people some insight into why I am the way I am would make people more comfortable around me, and have a better idea of how they could help.

Inspiring the community through the arts is at the heart of the Fine Arts

Center’s mission. Members of the community make the FAC what it is, and the young people of Colorado Springs who inject their creativity, passion, and artistic flair into the FAC are what make it such a unique place.

The Youth Documentary Academy provides media and documentary film training to high school students in underserved communities of Colorado Springs. Students ages 14–18 spend seven weeks learning about documentary filmmaking, and produce their own documentaries on issues that are important to them.

And how did they react – what did your family and friends say when they watched it?

So many people said “thank you.” One kid, Gabriel, told me that I owned the night because it was so strong and powerful. All throughout making the film I had the question in my mind, “What would the audience want to see?” So I always put myself in the audience’s position to make sure that they’d always be enjoying what was on screen. My family was so wowed and so grateful.

MEET ANDY KWIATKOWSKIWhat did you decide to make your film about?

My film is about dealing with an autistic disorder throughout my school years, and finding it difficult to make friends at school. I do not have autism, but I am on the autistic spectrum so I have some of the behaviors. It’s hard for me to socialize, and in my high school I sat alone everyday with no one else to talk to. I would have complete body shutdowns in moments of panic and stress when I would be incredibly overwhelmed. That’s actually a problem that I’m trying to overcome at the moment.

The Fine Arts Center’s 22nd Annual Gala – Rio Carnival – was held on August 27, with nearly 400 guests in attendance.

Once again, with the incredible generosity of our sponsors, underwriters and patrons, the Gala set a new record, raising more than $245,000 to further the FAC’s mission of inspiring community vitality through performing arts, visual arts, and arts education. Thank you so much to all of our wonderful donors!

On behalf of Kirkpatrick Bank, FAC Board Vice Chair David Kunstle presented Bart and Cathy Holaday with the Grand Honoree Award as the highlight of the evening. Bart and Cathy are incredibly generous supporters and advocates of culture, innovation, and creativity as driving forces in a thriving, vibrant community. Their passionate philanthropy, focused in exciting ways, represents great potential in bringing enrichment and vitality to our own community. We are so appreciative of their spirit of innovation and entrepreneurialism that will help us realize our vision of opening up the world of art and art history to new generations of museum-goers.

An Historic Alliance with Colorado CollegeIn August 2016, the Fine Arts Center officially announced an historic alliance

with Colorado College that signals the re-envisioning and redefining of both organizations’ contributions to the arts in the region. The partnership supports the missions of both organizations while expanding innovative learning opportunities, arts programming, and cultural resources for the greater Colorado Springs community. The goal of the alliance goes beyond merging two existing organizations: It seeks to create something new, ground-breaking, and forward-looking.

“The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center is a cultural gem, and I’m excited about the immense possibilities this alliance presents for all involved,” CC President Jill Tiefenthaler said. “I look forward to rolling up our sleeves and working to create the most innovative, dynamic, and vibrant organization possible.”

“I’m thrilled to help create a strong and vibrant future for the Fine Arts Center that will enable it to thrive and build upon its legacy for another 100 years,” FAC President and CEO David Dahlin said. “This is truly a win-win-win agreement benefiting the FAC, CC, and the entire community.”

Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers praised the affiliation. “This partnership, which brings together two of our most prominent institutions in arts and higher education, is something we should all look to as an example of innovative, collaborative future-building,” he said. “We all benefit as a community from the expanded and dynamic possibilities this represents in our arts, culture, and education sectors.”
