In this day of being politically correct, I wonder
if it is acceptable to have memories of events in
your life when a situation was – by today’s
standards – not politically correct.
When I was a young lad living in our tiny village,
Halloween always brought out the terrible goblins
in all of us.
Farmers hay wagons loaded with whatevers
were drawn into the village and parked up against
Charlie Hearn’s store. Outhouses, including the
boys and girls behind the schoolhouse, were
tipped over and shoved down the bank into the
Cherry Valley Creek.
Windows of cars, homes, and the country
general stores were always soaped – which
brings up the point of this line of chatter. We had
a lady whom I will not name, to be politically
correct, who whole-heartedly joined in the
holidays nonsense and merry making such as
turning cows and horses loose, setting harmless
bonfires in the middle of a street and naturally
soaping the higher windows as she was not only
very large, but also very tall. She could reach
windows that we kids couldn’t.
About 8:30 Halloween night, dressed in a
spooky burlap costume, carrying a straw broom,
she came bursting into the lower grocery store
with large tears streaming down her cheeks,
while half-screaming like an Irish banshee. The
storeowner – my cousin Norm – in as much of a
sympathetic tone as he could muster asked,
“What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” She answered, “I
was over to Barney’s bent over soaping his
windows and he snuck up behind me and kicked
me right in my rear.”
With that, cousin Norm laughed and said, “How
could he miss?”
That was back during the World War II years
when everyone was talking about the terrible
warmongers – the Krauts (Germans) and Japs
(Japanese). Now even mentioning the size of the
lady soaper or the Krauts and Japs would
certainly not be politically correct but I have to
admit, it’s the kind of stuff memories are made
of. As a kid, did you ever take a hunk of Ivory and
soap a few windows?
I would not recommend you do it now-a-days.
Our politically correct society would not find any
humor in your act but would call in the local bulls
(not politically correct) and have you arrested.
Oops, there I go again.
Isn’t it rather strange or do you suppose some
humorist or comedian chose to have Halloween,
the evening of October 31st, followed by All
Saints Day and Election Day at the same time of
year? Do you suppose the good Lord, knowing
there are no real Halloween characters, sees the
humor in piggy-backing election time along with
spooks, ghosts, and goblins?
Where is Dr. Louis Jones of Cooperstown,
author of “Things Go Bump in the Night” when we
need him?
Realizing I’m just a country boy who missed
kindergarten and Harvard, but a lot of my friends
remember me in grade, high school, and even
college – but not kindergarten, our country school
board hadn’t figured that one out yet so our
Mom’s continued to be our unpaid baby-sitters.
Another four years have come and gone and
the citizens of the greatest nation on the face
of this God-created globe have chosen to keep
Barack Obama as President for the next four
years. While some did not vote for him, the
election is over and 100% of all of our citizens
should try to support him. Naturally support can
only come honestly if we believe in what he is
attempting to accomplish. I’m a firm believer in
praying for our leaders, especially our president.
Remember during President Clinton’s second
term, he moved from the far left towards the
center? It is quite possible that during the near
future, we will have to tighten our belts. This
coming week could be the correct time to start
a New Year’s resolution or resolutions.
Just to mention a few: turn your home
thermostat down and wear warmer clothes.
Drive no faster than 55 mph. We do not always
have to step on the gas and pass that slower
driver up ahead. Look for bargains and use
coupons at the grocery store. If your habit has
been to drive twenty to thirty miles to go
shopping, try shopping at a local store. Most
cars will burn a gallon of gas for every twenty
miles traveled. A thirty mile trip is actually sixty
miles and could cost you three gallons of gas at
$4 per gallon. You will save $12.
It’s time to put the preaching soapbox away
and enjoy a chuckle or two.
Little Charlie wanted $100 so badly that he
decided to write a letter to God. The post office
forwarded the letter to the president. The
president, while amused, ordered $5 be sent to
the boy. When the boy opened the letter and
found $5, not $100, he wrote another letter to
God and said, “Thank you, but your letter passed
through Washington and they took 95 percent.”
We have to realize that President Obama is
now faced with a similar problem as the one
George Washington faced. He can no longer
blame everything on the previous president.
God bless you, our friends, President Obama
and Mr. Romney.
If you see something red chugging by, it won’t
be me. It’s too cold. But wave anyway – somehow
I’ll get the message.
A farmer who had driven his mules to town one
morning arrived back home three hours late. His
wife asked why it took so long. He said, “You
won’t believe it but I picked up the president, and
from then on, them mules did not obey or
understand a word that was said.”
We just received a phone call from a friend who
lives down near New York City. Their electricity
was just turned on and now they have a foot of
snow. I know he didn’t blame their troubles on
Bush and certainly can’t blame Romney. If he
wants to remain politically correct – what can he
do? Certainly blaming the good Lord might not be
the smart thing to do, or even politically correct.

Deskins, told theVeterans at this pre-Veter-ans Day “Your service andsacrifice has been instru-mental in getting thiscountry where it is.”
Bradd Vickers, aChenango County VietnamWar Veteran, noted “I haveenjoyed meeting with otherVeterans from Central NewYork and Canada at theseevents each year and lis-tening to them tell of theirservice in the military. It istruly an honor to be invit-ed to such an event.”
Col. Deskins discussedthe role of EADS and theCentral New York militaryresponse to the call shetook on Sept. 11, 2001which turned out to be aterrorist attack on theU.S. in her address.
Since Sept. 11, EADShas grown in operation tomonitor the eastern por-tion of the United Statesfrom the Mississippi Riverto the Atlantic Ocean, cov-ering more than 1 millionsquare miles of air space.The work is done by 178radars throughout theeastern sector.
Deskins said, “As acommander, it’s always anhonor to go out and speakto veterans and let themknow what we’re doingnow in the military. Ithink this is a fantasticevent that the Oneida Na-tion puts together to getall of these people in oneplace and honor them,particularly in November,with it being VeteransDay.”

Millions of peopleacross the United Stateswill sit down Nov. 22 to atraditional Thanksgivingmeal, including turkey,potatoes, squash, cornand cranberries. Thesefoods have become syn-onymous with Thanksgiv-ing, but how did they endup on tables from Maineto California?
According to BruceSmith, senior scientist atthe Smithsonian’s Na-tional Museum of NaturalHistory, much of what iseaten at Thanksgiving to-day came from Mexicoand South America.
“We can trace many ofthese foods up throughthe southwestern UnitedStates into other parts ofthe country,” he said.“Most likely this diffusionhappened as a result oftrading or other contactamong American Indiantribes in this country.”
So, where did theseThanksgiving favoritescome from? Smith sharessome facts about the ori-gins of the food on thisholiday menu:
Turkey• The turkey was do-
mesticated twice, in cen-tral Mexico and in thesouthwestern United
States. This domestica-tion happened at thesame time about 2,000years ago. The south-western domesticate dis-appeared, and theturkeys eaten today arederived from the Mexicandomesticate.
• Wild turkeys were eat-en at the first Thanksgiv-ing. Domesticatedturkeys made quite ajourney to tables in theUnited States. They weremost likely brought fromMexico to Europe, and
then came to the easternUnited States by Euro-peans when they settledthe colonies.
Potatoes• Potatoes were domes-
ticated in South America(likely Peru) about 10,000years ago. The Spanish
probably took the potatofrom South America toEurope, where it slowlybecame a staple crop.
• Like turkeys, potatoesalso had quite a journeyto the dinner table. Euro-peans likely introduced
potatoes to the easternUnited States when theysettled there.Squash and pumpkins• There are many
species of squash andpumpkins grown today inthe United States; themost common species
(Cucurbita pepo) alsowas, like the turkey, do-mesticated twice — inMexico and the easternUnited States. Some com-mon members of thespecies C. pepo includeacorn squash, pattypansquash and spaghettisquash.
• The orange-skinned“pumpkin” lineage of C.pepo (what is carved as ajack-o-lantern) was thefirst plant to be domesti-cated in the Americas,
about 10,000 years agoin Mexico.
• There was a seconddomestication of C. peposquash in the easternUnited States about5,000 years ago. All of theyellow- and green-skinned summer squash-es in the U.S., such aszucchini and acornsquash, were derivedfrom a wild gourd thatcan still be found in theOzarks.
Corn• Corn (maize) was do-
mesticated in Mexicomore than 8,000 yearsago. This important cropplant arrived in thesouthwestern UnitedStates by 4,000 yearsago, and reached easternNorth America at about200 B.C.
• Maize is derived fromteosinte, a large wildgrass that has fivespecies growing in Mexi-co, Guatemala andNicaragua.

years of cooking, I’ve hadmy share of ThanksgivingDay disasters! Here aresome secrets to savingyour sanity and yourThanksgiving dinner:
How to quickly de-frost a turkey: You’llneed at least 24 to 48hours (about 5 hours perpound) to thaw out afrozen turkey in the re-frigerator. If you need todo a quick thaw, placethe wrapped, frozenturkey in your kitchensink or a large containerlike an ice chest. Coverthe turkey with cold wa-ter. Drain and refill the
water every half hour be-cause as the bird thawsout, the water will getwarmer. Using thismethod, the turkey willthaw at the rate of abouta half hour for eachpound.
Preparing the bird:Remove the giblet pack-age (neck, livers, heartand gizzards) from insidethe cavity of the bird ANDcheck the neck cavity.Some manufacturersplace the giblet packagein the neck cavity, andothers place it inside thecavity closest to the legs.
Most turkeys come withthe legs already trussed(crossed and secured
with a metal or plasticbracket). If you’re not go-ing to stuff your bird,there’s no need to trussthe legs. Trussing an un-stuffed bird hinders thehot oven air from circu-lating inside and aroundthe legs. This means thatthe dark meat will takelonger to cook and thebreast meat will cookfaster and probably dryout before the legs everget completely done.
The turkey isn’t done:Don’t rely on the “pop-up” timer in the turkey,as it usually means thatthe breast is overcookedand the dark meat isn’tdone. If the dark meat is-
n’t done, remove thewings and breast meatfrom the rest of theturkey, in one piece, ifpossible. Cover the breastand wing portion with foiland set it aside. Put thedrumsticks and thighportion of the turkeyback into the oven to con-tinue cooking until done.You can re-assemble thewhole turkey and garnishit, or just cut it into serv-ing portions and arrangeit on a platter.
Stuffing savers: If thestuffing/dressing is toowet, spread it out in athin layer on a sheet panso that it will dry quickly.Place it back into the
oven for 5 to 7 minutes.If it’s too dry, add more
pan drippings or chickenbroth to the mixture. Ifyou don’t have any moredrippings or broth, youcan combine a chickenbouillon cube (if you haveone), along with a tea-spoon of poultry season-ing, three tablespoons ofbutter and 1 cup of water.Cook the mixture in themicrowave for 3 to 5 min-utes or until it comes to aboil. Stir to combine andthen add it, a little at atime, to the dressing untilit’s moist.
Soupy mashed pota-toes: You can add unsea-soned dry breadcrumbsto soupy mashed pota-toes to absorb any excessliquid.
Gravy rescue tips: Ifthe gravy is lumpy, pourit through a strainer intoa new pan and bring it toa simmer, stirring gently.If it’s too thin, mix a ta-blespoon of melted butterwith a tablespoon of flour.Bring the gravy up to aboil and whisk in the but-ter mixture to thickenyour gravy. If the gravy istoo thick, add a littlemore chicken broth, pandrippings or a little waterand butter to thin it out.
Burnt offerings: If theturkey begins to burnwhile it’s roasting, flip the
bird over immediatelyand continue to cook it.After the turkey is done,you can remove and dis-card any blackened skinand about half an inch ofthe meat below any burntarea. Slice the remainingbreast meat, arrange it ona platter and ladle gravyover it.
More tips: If your veg-etables or gravy burn onthe bottom, carefully re-move the layer that isn’tburned into another potor serving dish. DON’TSCRAPE THE BOTTOMOF THE PAN.
If the dinner rolls areburned on the bottom,just cut off as much asyou can, butter them,and fold them in half tocover the missing ends.
Whipped cream is theperfect “make-up” fordesserts that aren’t quiteup to par. You can cut thetop layer off a burnt pieand cover it with whippedcream.
Hopefully, these tipswill rescue you from anyThanksgiving Day disas-ters, but remember it’sabout gathering togetherto give thanks with thepeople you love, not theperfect meal! Have ablessed Thanksgiving!

a lot of debris strikes on our house. Thegutter and eaves took a lot of damage,with some of the gutters torn down andthe eaves looking ratty. How expensive isthis to fix? I don’t have a lot of money. —Flores C., Taunton, MA
A: The gutters themselves should not betoo expensive to re-hang, or replace if bad-ly damaged. However, if there is damageto the roof eaves, you need to have a pro-fessional check it out and assess just howseverely those debris strikes affected theroof. You also should contact your insur-ance company to report the damage.

Thismeans that in addition to state funds torepair and clean up storm damage, somefederal funds have likely been allotted.Your state’s emergency managementagency (MEMA, in this case) can provideinformation on how and where to report
damage, how to work with your insurancecompany to get repairs made, and otherimportant advice.
While you’ll need to do your homeworkto find out what funding is available tocover the repairs (if your insuranceprovider doesn’t), there are some generalguidelines to follow no matter what. Havemore than one contractor or roofing com-pany check out the roof, eaves and gut-ters; have each provide you with a writtenestimate of the cost, as well as an estimateof how much time it will take to effect therepair. Do not allow work to start untilyou’ve agreed to the cost and scope of thework and have signed off on the estimate.
If you’re at all uncertain about yourability to negotiate a fair price for the re-pair job, or to fill out requests for repairassistance or reimbursement, ask a trust-ed friend or relative to help you with theprocess.

Check or have a mechanic check the following items on your car:• Antifreeze levels - ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing.• Battery and ignition system - should be in top condition and battery terminals
should be clean.• Brakes - check for wear and fluid levels.• Exhaust system - check for leaks and crimped pipes and repair or replace as
necessary. Carbon monoxide is deadly and usually gives no warning.• Fuel and air filters - replace and keep water out of the system by using addi-
tives and maintaining a full tank of gas. A full tank will keep the fuel line fromfreezing.
• Heater and defroster - ensure they work properly.• Lights and flashing hazard lights - check for serviceability.• Oil - check for level and weight. Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures
and do not lubricate as well.• Thermostat - ensure it works properly.• Windshield wiper equipment - repair any problems and maintain proper wash-
er fluid level.• Install good winter tires - Make sure the tires have adequate tread. All-weath-
er radials are usually adequate for most winter conditions. However, some jurisdic-tions require that to drive on their roads, vehicles must be equipped with chainsor snow tires with studs.
Update the emergency kits in your vehicles with:• a shovel• windshield scraper and small broom• flashlight• battery powered radio• extra batteries• water• snack food• matches• extra hats, socks and mittens• first aid kit with pocket knife• necessary medications• blanket(s)• tow chain or rope• road salt and sand• booster cables• emergency flares• fluorescent distress flagSource: www.ready.gov
