So you think all a cup or two of coffee can do
for you is to give you a case of heartburn or
keep you from a good night’s sleep? An article
published May 17 in the New England Journal of
Medicine suggests that older adults who drink
coffee may be less likely than non-drinkers to
die from a number of causes.
The 8-year-old study of over 403,000 men
and women who drink coffee compared to those
who drink little or none were less likely to die
from heart disease, respiratory disease, stroke,
diabetes, injuries, accidents, and infections.
I, for one, can prove I haven’t died yet from too
much or too little coffee but I am willing to
testify that several times I became wide,
bug-eyed awake at 2 in the morning with a sour
stomach, wishing I had not had that last cup.
Just think, if it wasn’t for coffee, Tums would
go out of business, there wouldn’t be any late
night T.V., and fewer with their bedroom reading
lights on.
Remember the old sailor’s warning: “Bright sky
at night, sailors’ delight. Bright sky in the morn-
ing, sailors take warning.” It is obvious that on
special occasions the good Lord includes us
land-lubbers in his celestial messages.
A few mornings ago the entire sky was
painted in bright soft blue with streaks of color,
not just in the east but everywhere. If an artist
included that beautiful sky in his landscape
painting, we would have doubts about its
accuracy. There is only one who can paint the
sky with such beauty.
First thing in the morning I usually search the
skies for a flock or gaggle of geese. I did not
expect this morning to be any different but it
was. The ground at 4:30 was covered with snow
and it was too early for the geese.
Winter has started in our beautiful upstate
country. The leaves are gone, hillsides are barren,
even most of the oak trees have shed their
foliage having settled in for winter. A few times
during the winter months we will see a little
chipmunk or a squirrel out digging through the
snow to recover one of their hidden pantries.
How is it possible they can remember where their
hidden treasures are buried? All winter we will
continue to see deer. They too have to dig down
through the snow to find their food.
Back in the warm house, I tried in my mind to
organize a trip down memory lane, like the little
chippy or squirrel dig up a treasure here or
there.
One of my favorite magazines is Yankee, a New
England magazine. Yankee is now a very
professional appearing, full color, gloss
publication. I started reading Yankee before
glossy paper or colored pictures or ads, while it
is still worth the price and the time to read.
Somehow with its new beauty, something
seems to be missing from the earlier years.
Maybe with its new format utilizing glossy
paper stock and full-colored pictures, a reader
no longer has to paint his own mental pictures
relying on imagination, which was part of the
fun in reading.
Let’s travel together down memory lane for a
few minutes. The first home I can remember was
on a little twenty to thirty acre farm about two
miles from the village.
Dad drove a brown Model A Ford with black
fenders. The road leading to our little farm was
a common dirt path. Two or three times a year,
the Middlefield town roadsmen would level out
the worst of the ruts and rough spots with a
large grader pulled behind a truck. Naturally the
truck had a driver and the grader was operated
by one man — his duty was to adjust the
blades and rake to achieve the best results
possible. They called it grading or honing the
road. Every road in our area was dirt.
I don’t believe we ever thought it should be a
macadam or paved road. Dad’s Model A Ford was
a step up in human comfort. Some of our
neighbors still drove into the village with a horse
and buggy or in the winter with a sleigh. The Model
A produced a sound all of its own and the manifold
heater barely kept the cabin comfortable, so we
covered with blankets and wore heavy warm wool
clothes — including long johns.
Our new home — that is new to us — was in
the village. It provided a more comfortable way
of life. We had electricity and running water at
the kitchen sink. No modern bathroom or toilet,
yet.
Dad hired a local plumber to put in a new
complete bathroom. You know we thought we
were big shots. Several of our farm friends
visited my mother for a cup of hot tea with a
slice of Irish soda bread and naturally to use
the indoor- modern bathroom complete with a
john. Boy, we Lee’s were living high on the hog.
The street out front was still a dirt road. Why
not? Weren’t all village streets dirt?
Remember the famous movie, “On Golden
Pond,” with Henry Fonda and Katherine
Hepburn? That movie made the lonely sounding
loon famous. A loon to us back in the hills was
someone who was a patient at the looney bin
down in Binghamton, or should have been. We
had crows. What can you say about the lowly
crow? But as they flew over our village, their caw
seemed to resonate and fill the air with a
pleasant, “this is home” sound.
This morning I am reminded of the old country
preacher who was accused of standing or
leaning at the pulpit and rambling on until he
finally thought of something to say. One Sunday,
he said three times “in closing.” With that, a
farmer said “That’s enough of those ‘in closings’
Parson. My wife’s dinner is burning up in the oven
and I’ve got to let the cows out. Say ‘Amen.’”
On the way to be with my wife in the hospital
I stopped at a local diner or café for breakfast.
A group of people from a local church were
enjoying breakfast and reading from the Bible
and I assume praying. It blessed me old Irish
heart to see a group of U.S. citizens publicly
worshipping God.
God be with folks, and he will be with our
nation as long as we have believers such as you.
Fred Lee and the Lee Family
Less we forget to chuckle:
Smith climbs to the top of Mt. Sinai to get
close enough to talk to God. Looking up, he asks
the Lord… “God, what does a million years
mean to you?”
The Lord replies, “A
minute.” Smith asks,
“And what does a
million dollars mean
to you?”
The Lord replies, “A
penny.” Smith asks,
“Can I have a penny?”
The Lord replies, “In a
minute.”

by Samantha MazzottaEssential gifts for do-it-
yourselfersIt’s that time of year
again, when you’ve got tothink of gifts for friendsand family that will beappreciated. Luckily, it’seasy to pick out gifts forthe do-it-yourselfers.Most DIYers will outrighttell you what they need,or you can casually sur-vey their workspace tosee what is not there.
If you’re a DIYer who
really wants something, here are a few things youcan drop a hint about:
• Power tools: The keyword with handheld pow-er tools is “rechargeable.”While corded power toolsprovide a consistent flowof electricity and reliablepower, cordless drills areDIYers’ go-to standardbecause they can simplypull them off the chargerand use them anywhere,no need to look for anoutlet or extension cord.
Prices: $40 to $249• Portability: Most DIY-
ers have more than onetoolbox and, as their toolcollection grows, they’realways on the lookout forone that meets their car-ry-around needs. Consid-er tucking a spare toolbelt and some basic sta-ples like a tape measureand screwdriver set into adurable toolbox. Prices:$8 to $90
• Spares: While it’s im-possible to have an extraof everything, extrascrews, nuts, bolts, nailsand other hardware areessential to have around.Look for combination kitslike picture hanger as-sortments, specialty nailand screw sizes, and cab-inet and drawer hardwarelike handles and hingesfor emergency repairs.
• Cleanup: A wet/dryvacuum is an importantand versatile part of anyworkshop. If your DIYerdoesn’t have one of theseyet, there are affordablemodels available. Prices:$49 to $400.
HOME TIP: “I never askmy husband directlywhat tools or items hewants for Christmas. In-stead, I ask him aboutthe project he’s workingon. There’s always sometool or part he’s missing; Ijust note it down and buyit for him.” — Tara L.,Richmond, VA

TreesMany artificial trees are
fire resistant. If you buyone, look for a statementspecifying this protection.
A fresh tree will staygreen longer and be lessof a fire hazard than a drytree. To check for fresh-ness, remember:
- A fresh tree is green.- Fresh needles are
hard to pull from branch-es.
- When bent betweenyour fingers, fresh nee-dles do not break.
- The trunk butt of afresh tree is sticky withresin.
- When the trunk of atree is bounced on theground, a shower offalling needles shows thattree is too dry.
Place tree away fromfireplaces, radiators andother heat sources. Heat-ed rooms dry trees outrapidly, creating fire haz-ards.
Cut off about two inch-es of the trunk to exposefresh wood for better wa-ter absorption. Trim awaybranches as necessary toset tree trunk in the baseof a sturdy, water-hold-ing stand with widespread feet. Keep thestand filled with waterwhile the tree is indoors.
Place the tree out of theway of traffic and do notblock doorways. Use thinguy-wires to secure alarge tree to walls or ceil-ing. These wires are al-most invisible.
LightsIndoors or outside, use
only lights that have beentested for safety. Identifythese by the label from anindependent testing labo-ratory.
Check each set oflights, new or old, for bro-ken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, orloose connections. Dis-
card damaged sets or re-pair them before using.
Fasten outdoor lightssecurely to trees, house, walls or other firm sup-port to protect from winddamage.
Use no more than threestandard-size sets oflights per single exten-sion cord.
Turn off all lights ontrees and other decora-tions when you go to bedor leave the house. Lightscould short and start afire.
Never use electric lightson a metallic tree. Thetree can become chargedwith electricity from
faulty lights, and any per-son touching a branchcould be electrocuted! Toavoid this danger, usecolored spotlights aboveor beside a tree, neverfastened onto it!
Keep “bubbling” lightsaway from children. These lights with theirbright colors and bub-bling movement cantempt curious children tobreak candle-shapedglass, which can cut, andattempt to drink liquid, which contains a haz-ardous chemical.

(MS) — As tempera-tures drop and the annu-al hibernation routine be-gins, we start using heat-ing appliances such asthe furnace, fireplace, and space heaters for thefirst time in months. Toavoid potential hazards, check every autumn that
these are in still in goodcondition and follow pre-cautions for proper use.
CSA Group, a leader inpublic safety and testingand certification, offersthe following safety tipsfor keeping warm on colddays:
Furnace:• Have a qualified heat-
ing contractor perform ayearly maintenancecheck of your furnaceand venting system.
• Clean or replace yourfurnace filter frequentlyduring the heating sea-son.
• Keep the immediatearea free of obstructionsto ensure free air flow.
• Look for a certifica-tion mark such as the
CSA star mark on yourgas-fired furnace to en-sure it has been testedand certified to the appli-cable standard.
• Never use gasoline orother flammable liquidsnear your gas furnace.
• Don’t store com-bustible materials suchas paper, chemicals, paint, rags and cleaningproducts close to yourgas furnace.
Gas fireplace: • Check that the glass
panel is intact. Do notuse your gas fireplace ifthe glass panel is re-moved, cracked or bro-ken. Glass panels andframe assemblies shouldonly be replaced by aqualified service person.
• Check for the mark ofan accredited certifica-tion organization, such asthe star mark from CSAGroup when purchasinga gas fireplace.
Space heaters:• Check for wear on the
electrical cord. If it’s dam-aged, replace the entireunit or have the cord re-
placed by a qualified re-pair person.
• Keep it clean by dust-ing or vacuuming it regu-larly. Always turn theunit off first.
• Keep the heater clearof furniture, rugs anddrapes to allow free airmovement and avoidoverheating.
• Look for certifiedthird-party verificationmarks like CSA Group’scertification mark. Thisshows that the heatercomplies with recognizedsafety standards.
• Turn the heater downor off before going tosleep and keep it out ofpathways and well awayfrom bedding andclothes. Turn it off whenleaving the house.
• Install a smoke alarmin the room with thespace heater.
• Have working smokeand carbon monoxidealarms installed through-out the home.

by Sam MazzottaFind the right gifts for
dogs or catsDear Paw’s Corner: My
daughter and her familyhave two big dogs and acat. I like giving gifts to
the pets as well as mygrandkids. Do you haveany suggestions? — Tam-my, via e-mail
Dear Tammy: Any-thing that looks cozy, funand safe for pets is a good
bet. I’ve always appreciat-ed even small gifts like acute bandanna for mydog or small catnip toysfor my cat. If you’re look-ing for gifts beyond stock-ing stuffers, here are
some that most pet own-ers will appreciate:
• Dog and cat beds:These range in price fromabout $15 on up to a fewhundred dollars. Look fora sturdy fabric covering
that is easy to brush furfrom, and stuffing thatcan’t be easily pulled outand chewed on.
• Cat furniture: From asimple padded windowsillseat to “kitty condo” playcomplexes that cats canwander through, cat own-ers appreciate these com-bination scratching postsand rest areas.
• Travel safety: A num-ber of products havecome on the market tokeep dogs and cats safein the car, from tradition-al travel crates to adaptedseat belts that keep Fidosecurely in his seat.
• Toys: For your daugh-ter’s big dogs, sturdychew toys are probably
welcome. I still really likeKong chew toys, whichare nearly impossible todamage and can be filledwith peanut butter or an-other treat. For cats, something beyond thecatnip mouse could in-clude one of Bergan’s“Turbo Tracks,” in whicha ball inset in a round orfigure-eight track scootsaround with every swipeof the paw.
No matter which giftyou choose, or if you de-cide to just give small, in-expensive gifts to yourdaughter’s pets, I’m surethey’ll be appreciated.

by Katie RannoThis Thanksgiving, the
First Baptist Church ofLittle Falls held their 21stannual Thanksgiving Dayoutreach. According toReverend Chris Winter-mute, lead pastor of FirstBaptist, this community-wide event was started byDawes Dunham, who wasonce a pastor at thechurch. He created theevent with the purpose ofgiving the students in thechurch’s teen ministrythe desire to help othersin the community. PastorWintermute also sees thisas a good opportunity forthe teens in the ministry, saying that this givesthem the chance to serveothers without looking fora return.
Dinners are served in-side the church’s fellow-ship hall and are also de-livered to the houses ofthose in the area who can’tmake it out to the church.About 45 to 50 meals areordered as deliveries everyyear, designating 6 to 9drivers to deliver thesemeals, along with the helpof teens who come alongfor the ride and brightenthe days of those they de-liver to. “They greatly ap-preciate the dinner andthe visit,” said Pastor Win-termute of those whomthey deliver to.
Much fellowship is donein house as well. Teensare asked to help in manyareas of the event, fromgreeting people at thedoor, to helping themdown the stairs, to evensitting down and enjoyinga conversation with themwhile they eat. Some ofthe teens have been help-ing out with this event foryears, like Marleen andCindy Smith and MikaylaWintermute, who say theyget involved because it’snice to help others, andit’s nice to get to knowothers in the communityand serve those in thearea. This year alsobrought in some first timehelpers, like Marcus whosays that he came out be-cause he also feels thatit’s nice to help others.Fellow first timer SethRhyne says he decided tohelp out because it’s, “Thereason for the season.”
Many people from thecommunity come out forthis event, and many ofthese community mem-bers come out every year.Shirley Haponsk has beencoming out to the eventfor the past 10 years, say-
ing that it offers “Goodfood. Fellowship. It’s anhour well fed.”
And indeed it was. All ofthe traditional Thanksgiv-
ing fixings were served.Mashed potatoes andgravy, yams, green beancasserole, dinner rolls, various pies, squash, andeven the ever-so-popular
Thanksgiving turkey wasserved to those who cameor ordered meals to be de-livered by the church. Atotal of around 100 meals
were served by the churchthis year. It was a greattime had by all, andeveryone left with fullstomachs and warmhearts.

(NAPSA) — If you’re like most mo-torists, you’re concerned aboutsafety.
In fact, research shows that vehi-cle safety is a top motivator for mostmotorists when it comes to vehiclemaintenance and the brake systemis at the top of the vehicle safetychecklist.
“Brakes are a normal wear itemfor any car and eventually they’regoing to need to be replaced for bothperformance and safety reasons,”explained Rich White, executive di-rector, Car Care Council. “A proper-ly operating brake system helps en-sure safe vehicle operation and con-trol under a variety of conditions. However, many motorists are un-aware of the signs and symptomsthat their brake system may needmaintenance or repair.”
What to look forIt’s important to be alert and rec-
ognize the warning signs of braketrouble. If your car is pulling to theleft or right, or if you hear odd nois-es when you apply the brakes, youshould inspect your brakes. Otherwarning signs include an illuminat-ed brake warning light, brake grab-
bing, low pedal feel, vibration, hardpedal feel and squealing.
What to doFor routine maintenance, check
your vehicle’s braking system atleast once a year. A thorough in-spection should include brake lin-ing wear, brake fluid level, rotorthickness, condition of hoses andbrake lines, brake and dash warn-ing lights, as well as taking the carfor a test-drive to detect other po-tential brake system problems.
What not to doSeveral factors that affect brake
wear include driving habits, operat-ing conditions, vehicle type and thequality of the brake lining material.
“Never put off routine brake in-spections or any needed repair, such as letting the brakes get to the‘metal-to-metal’ point, which can bepotentially dangerous and lead to amore costly repair bill,” Whiteadded. “If you haven’t checked yourbrakes in the past year, it’s a greattime to ‘give your car a brake’ andmake sure it’s in safe working con-dition.”

Give your car a brake
(NAPSA) — What youpay for your auto insur-ance can vary by hun-dreds of dollars, depend-ing on what type of caryou drive, your accidenthistory and the insurancecompany that providesthe policy. To save moneyon your auto insurancepolicy, keep these seventips in mind:
1. Ask about discounts. You may qualify for one ifyou haven’t had any acci-dents or moving viola-tions for several years. Ifyou drive a lower than av-erage number of miles ayear, you may qualify forlow mileage discounts.Ask your insurance agentabout discounts for:
• Antitheft devices• Defensive driving
courses• Long-time customers• Insuring more than
one car• No accidents in three
years• No moving violations
in three years• Student drivers with
good grades.2. Get multiple quotes.
Rates can vary greatlyand they change often.Review your coverage atleast annually.
3. Reduce coverage onolder cars. Considerdropping collision orcomprehensive coverage
on older cars. If the car isworth less than 10 timesthe annual premium, buying coverage may notbe cost-effective. You canlook up the value of yourcar at Kelley Blue Book,www.kbb.com.
4. Ask for a higher de-ductible. Deducti-bles arewhat you pay out beforeyour insurance kicks in.By getting higher ones, you can lower your costssubstantially. Beforechoosing a higher de-ductible, however, setaside enough money topay for needed repairs.
5. Bundle your insur-ance. You can often get abreak if you buy two ormore types of insurancefrom the same provider, such as auto and home-owners. You may also geta discount if you havemore than one vehicle in-
sured with the same com-pany.
6. Compare costs. Some companies offer adiscount if you drive ahybrid or low-profile car.
Before you buy a newor used car, check intothe insurance costs.
7. Maintain a goodcredit record. Most insur-ers factor credit into pric-ing auto insurance poli-cies.
To protect your creditstanding, pay your billson time, don’t get morecredit than you need andkeep your credit balancesas low as possible.
Check your creditrecord regularly and haveany errors correctedpromptly.
