Hard fought narrow away wins can be the most entertaining or nerve wracking games ... depend-ing on whether you are a neutral or a supporter. The chances at either end were numerous, you couldn’t really use words like squandered or missed too often because both keepers - our own Joel Harding and the well-known Ian Chatfield in the Merstham goal - both had excellent games ... and they were busy.

After last week’s sleepy start, the good early chances that Merstham created were a worry, and really Hill didn’t have their share of the play in the first 10-15 minutes. That’s partly why this victory was so satisfying as the Hill-ians gradually took over the balance of play. The side was adjusted slightly from last week with Nick Fogden feeling unwell before the game (eye infec-tion), Neil Watts moved to center

mid to partner Danny Gainsford. With so many chances not taken in the first half, which way would the thoughts of the supporter be turn-ing - I would like to have bugged the dressing room!But the chances continued to be created regularly after break and as Manager Gary Croydon said after the game “As long as chances are be-ing created, there should be nothing too much to worry about.”

After an hour of play a lofted ball fell between the collision bound Lloyd Cotton and the Merstham ‘keeper, Cotton reached it just in time and lifted the ball over the goalie and into the net, under.Sam Tucknott played about the last 15 minutes and his quick and energetic performance should give home fans something to look for-ward to seeing when he makes his debut at Leylands Park. Other new

signing, the youngster Tom Bold sat on the bench for this game, along with Youth player Tom Stilwell. Darren Boswell replaced Danny Curd towards the end of the game.Chances continued to flow, and as Merstham put more and more play-ers forward the temptation to be found sitting too deep was coun-tered by the Hill bench vigorously pulling and encouraging the team through the last period of a game that was a good spectacle on what looked a difficult, heavy and tiring surface.

Just to follow up Zamoras comments about being one step above County League.Yes that is the case but since gaining promotion from the County League BHTFC have not progressed quite far enough in my view.We flatter to deceive sometimes, just when you think things are looking up we come back down with a bump.

Having traded blows in the Doc Mar-tin League with the likes of Kings Lynn (gone now), Salisbury, Corby, East-leigh to name but a few. Then into Ry-man playing Kingstonian, Tonbridge, Hastings, Dover and others and giving most of those sides a good game.Getting close to a Wembly appearance in the FA Vase and trouncing Newport County in the FA Cup and only beaten by Hereford in the next round.

The point being I have witnessed some good and even great games but when I witness a load of rubbish I feel bound to comment on them.It’s nice to be positive but sometimes a reality check needs to be addressed.Some of the current players at BHTFC would never have got into those sides of yesteryear.Let’s hope for a mass improvement against Eastbourne Town on Saturday.

My apologies to any player who heard my rantings on Tuesday.It was unnecessary and i guess you must have been as frustrated and dis-appointed as the rest of us.I really should take a deep breath and count to ten at times.

Well done to the youth for their 5-1 prelim round beating of Westfield (Surrey) We now go to Pagham in the next round with the winners of that game away to Woking.From what i’ve heard, Ashley and his team have put together a really good squad who play very good football.

Chatham 0 - 2 Ramsgate

Walton & Hersham 0 - 2 Godalming

Whitehawk 3 - 0 Eastbourne T

Godalming are now top and our next two opponents are both finding some form.Whitehawk were generally unimpres-sive but do knock the ball around quickly on the attack. Brotherton in particular looked speedy and danger-ous. They do look beatable however if the opposing team can control the mid-field.On a filthy night i thought there might be less than thirty at East Brighton Park as just 3 vehicles passed us on the walk up to the ground. However, there were quite a few there on ar-rival and the official attendance of 105 looked about right. Still quite poor but a steady improvement on past numbers.

Well after BIG worthing scraped a point out of lowly Corinthian Casuals Captain Caveman continues his snipe at “lil ole BHTFC”.As England are playing Tuesday night and most supporters are not bothered with this league cup I am afraid the Worthing coffers are not going to be massively filled.

He may like to know The Hillians will be fielding a side that will give some help to restoring their confidence such has been their dismal showing so far this season.

No doubt the poor lad is still smart-ing from being turned over twice last season by The Hillians.Hope he gets his Giro through in time for our league clash, wouldn’t want him to miss another tonking.

Does anyone else know about this???http://www.nonleagueday.co.uk/I stumbled over it last night on the in-terweb. Seems to be supported by the Football Supporters Federation, and BBC Radio London....and Bradford City (?)Great idea by one fan trying to get the numbers up. Pity the FA aren’t so fixated on paying off their large mort-gage for the wok in North London and grab their ankles every time the Premier League shout at them (early morning rant over....)It might get off the ground another

year if there was bit more build up, and supported by the FA, and PUB-LICISED by the leagues themselves, who could pass it on to the clubs, the papers etc.Its a vain hope trying to get top league supporters into non-league games on a regular basis, but a one-off annual shindig might just work.
