Here we are again, ready to jump back into the full schedule of Fall, and it feels like I have hardly caught my breath from June. What happened to all that organizing and catch- ing up I was going to do? What happened to those day trips to the lake that were going to be sprinkled throughout the summer? What happened to the time I was going to spend reading for fun and formation? Like so much in our lives in the world in which we live—it just slipped away. We turn our heads and the kids have grown and are off to college; we look the other way, and we are retiring (for the first or second time); we look around, and our hair has gotten grayer or there is quite a bit less of it. Time doesn’t stand still for any of us. That is why this Fall, I am committing myself to make better use of my time. I am going to be intentional about my choices on how to spend my day. I am going to make relationships a priority—relationship with others, and especially my rela- tionship with God. I am going to set aside time to study, pray and contemplate each day. Wait a minute—this sounds like an- other list, another chance for the grand skill of our time—multi-tasking. Hold the phone—that isn’t what is needed. Jesus said to Martha—who was so consumed by all the good things she had to do, that she missed the chance to sit at Jesus’ feet— Jesus told hardworking her “that only one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen it.” At CSUMC we are working on our focus; keeping things simple; making sure that everything we do is tied to our faith journey and its purpose: “we Experience God, Grow Together, Serve Others so that we become LOVE (the LOVE of Christ) to share LOVE.” We are intentionally stepping back to basics: worship, study (formation), connection (fellowship) and service. Cool thing is that all of these can be had within any one of them. At worship—we praise God, we learn about God, we connect with each other, we serve by participation and we share our faith. Sounds like multi-tasking, I know, but think about it. Every- thing we do inside the walls of the church is about equipping the church family to be the Church (the hands and feet of Christ) in the world. When we make intentional choices to connect with God and others—through worship, small groups, and ser- vice—we will enjoy fellowship and share our faith. All of us need this. There isn’t a single one of us who couldn’t use some spiritual growth and focus on our faith. So here is the challenge: for the next 1 month, worship 1 time a week, be in a small group 1 time a week, serve others 1 time a week. Try it for a month. I know September is a horrendously busy month—but making time for God in our lives isn’t an option if you call yourself a Christian. This September, LET’S ROLL as we dive deeper in discipleship together! I invite you to let God’s Spirit take root within you—and it will make a difference—in your life and in the lives of your family, friends and co- workers. It will change the way you see yourself and how you see and relate to others. Give it a try. It is simple—but pro- foundly full of possibilities. 1-1-1…for 1 month. Give it a try—and let me know what happens! Blessings! Pastor Denise “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” Joshua 24:15b

CSUMC children’s group, FaithWeaver Friends, will be col-lecting items to put into gallon-sized zip lock “Blessing Bags” through the fall, winter and spring months. The bags will be assembled by the group in May and distributed at a Sunday

service for our Church members to hand out and be a blessing to others in need. We have all found ourselves wanting to help someone but not knowing how. These bags can stay in your car and be a quick and meaningful way to spread the love of Jesus in our community and farther. We invite you to join in our efforts as we collect specific items every month for this amazing mis-sion! All items can be placed in the Blessing Bag bin in the Narthex.

September: Emergency rain poncho October: Wool socks, thick November: Baby wipes (travel size) December: First aid kits (travel size) January: Deodorant

Welcome back!

It’s time for a new year of CSUMC’s children’s group,

FaithWeaver Friends!

Beginning August 31st, we hope your child will join us every Wednesday night 6:00-7:30 PM for a fun, friend-filled night of MUSIC, games, crafts and Bible discussions. Here they will “experience God’s love” and learn to serve others. FWF welcomes children ages 3 through 5th grade.

PASTOR’S WEDNESDAY NIGHT STUDY AUG. 31 – SEPT. 28

GO BEYOND CLICHÉ THEOLOGY

You may notice a change in our worship bulletins beginning Sunday, August 28th

In an effort to Experience God and Grow Together we have made an addition to our bulletin. We will now have a tear-off and take-home portion that includes a reflection on what was discussed in worship and then an action step for you to work on during the week that relates to the reflection. In other words, we will not only talk the talk, we will walk the walk TOGETHER! Some weeks this may be answering questions on your own, journaling, or focused prayer; some weeks may challenge you to do a specific task like write a note, make a visit, or the like. Some weeks you will be asked to let us know how your action step or challenge affected you by bringing

the paper back to church the next week with your experience. All of this is our way to encourage par-ticipation and ACTION: Movement. We are not meant to just be still vessels waiting to be filled but each of us are called

to be vital and active participants in this life of love and growth! You will notice each month will have a different theme! This month’s is: LET’S ROLL!!!!

Pastor’s Book Group (aka “Dish with Denise”)

Monthly book to read on your own, and then get together

Music @ the Cave Presents:

with guest conductor Richard J. Whitley

Sunday, October 23rd, at 4:00 PM in the Cave Spring UMC Sanctuary

Join us for this wonderful concert featuring an excellent concert band of local musicians.

Many of the participants are music teachers in the Roanoke Valley.

(Reception to follow the concert)

Thanks to each of you who had a part in making Sunday such a special occasion in my life and ministry! What a honor to join my college class-mate and friend, Art Wingfield, as Pastor Emeri-tus at Cave Spring. It is amazing how this was

done as a complete surprise to me. I didn't even get my hair cut last week nor wear my favorite suit on Sunday. Pastors Denise and Joanna, Mark Milberger, Ronn Lowe, Julie Hickcox, Bobbie Hanby, and Bobbie Rust all went the second mile in making this a day I shall never forget. It was Cave Spring at its best! It is good to be a part of such a family. Thanks to all, Bob McAden

Please be aware that there have recently been several cases of theft and trespass-ing reported in churches in our area. For security purposes, the church’s only open door on weekdays is upstairs by the handicapped ramp leading to Wesley

Hall and our office area. We suggest that for meetings or events, a person be placed at the door nearest to your meeting room (keeping the door locked at all times) to let attendees in. Please double-check that all doors are locked before leaving the church building. Thank you!
