Councillors Commentby Cnr Porky Sexton

As I write this report my thoughts go out to Maureen andJack Irons and family with the sad loss of their son Paul.

I make no bones about this senseless bashing in our town. Iendorse Jack’s comments at the service along with friendMark Lovett’s plea for unity in the town of Featherston.

Some people need to know what their children are up to andwho they are mixing with, being out on the streets all nightand up to no good.

In the near future the Mayor, three councilors, communityboard members and the promotional group members will bemeeting to discuss the matter.

It may be time to reinstate the Community patrols in town. Ifyou are interested please leave your name at the FeatherstonPolice Station, ask for Sergeant Kevin Basher.

A meeting was held last month about the FeatherstonInformation Centre. The centre needs more volunteers to helprun it. If you have some time to spare please ring DarkieBarrow on 308 9504. We need more help to be able to keepthe centre open.

The Lake Domain Reserve bridge will be closed from 23rd

October to enable major repairs to be carried out. Thecamping ground will also be closed while the work is inprogress.

Any other issues do not hesitate to contact one of your localcouncilors Solitaire, Dean or Porky.

Success for Olive GroveWe were delighted to be informed that Boar Bush Gully,Featherston extra virgin olive oil – Barnea olives was awardeda Bronze medal at the New Zealand Extra Virgin Olive oilawards held recently in Wellington. This means we can place a bronze sticker as well as a redone for the fact that our oil has passed the criteria for extravirgin olive oil.

Even better our son Paul and his wife Suzy with their oilwere awarded a silver medal for their oil, their olives areLeccino and Frantio. Naturally we are excited for them too. They sell from their estate called Harewood, Masterton.

Not sure if it a first for Featherston, but it is the first for ourlittle olive grove which we set up 15 years ago. This wasreally our second decent picking and we had help from lots ofpeople who will be getting their oil shortly, delay has beengetting new labels printed. We could not have done it withoutyou.

St Teresa’s NewsTerm 4 started back on a very exciting and positive mannerwith the celebration of the school and Parish’s Feast Day –St Teresa of Avila. This was held on Wednesday 15thOctober. On this day children wrote poems, prayers anddrawings to put on the school virtues tree and then participatedin a liturgy in the church. The year 8 students organised atabloid fun sports hour for all the school and in the afternoona talent quest was held. Many talents were presented frommining, joke telling, piano playing, singing and dancing. I ambeing rather biased but the teacher’s item was certainly awinner!!

Athletic training is well under way and we are very appreciativeof Ron Hughes from the athletic club who has put down linesand a track for the children to practice. The FeatherstonAthletics is being held on Wednesday 5th November at theFeatherston Rec. All children in the area from 8 – 13 yearsof age will be participating. If you are able to assist on thisday please contact any one of the three schools. Everyone iswelcome to attend this day which starts at 9.30am.

Each term a group of children are selected as CHAMPS ofSt Teresa’s. The photo shows this group who will spendtime at the pools and a picnic in Masterton with the Principal. The group is Andrian, Crystal, Lisa, Avila (back row) Luke,Piper, Charlotte, Jessie and Karrisa. Well done to thesestudents.

The Christmas Market is well underway - thanking you inanticipation for supporting this venture. See you all onSaturday 29th November.

The Sacrament of Confirmation for 21 candidates is beingheld on Sunday 9th November. Archbishop John Dew willbe saying this Mass. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Please keep in your prayers and thoughts for Father Morrisonwho is recuperating in Wellington from an operation that willsee him not return to the area until Christmas. Any messagesor gifts can be left at the school where they will be sent ontohim. He is a very loved and favourite character in and aroundthe South Wairarapa.

REEL EARTH COMINGIt’s been just over ten years since a group of South Islandfarmers illegally introduced the Calicivirus to New Zealand.Motivated by despair and desperation, and frustrated byperceived bureaucratic delays, the farming communitydecided to take matters into their own hands. It was thecountry’s greatest modern biosecurity breach, and has earnedboth praise and condemnation. Now it has been made intoan award winning documentary - Calici – A RuralConspiracy - and is coming to Featherston this Novemberalong with eight other environmental films.

Reel Earth: The Aotearoa Environmental Film Festival is thebrainchild of Brent Barrett, an agricultural scientist inPalmerston North. In 2005, with the help of a handful offriends, Brent solicited movies from around the country andthe globe to put together an evening of engaging, thoughtprovoking and humorous films about environmental issues.Four years later Reel Earth has become one of the Southernhemisphere’s leading environmental film festivals and last yearboasted 220 entries from 33 countries and screened for overtwo weeks in Palmy cinemas.

This year the Featherston Cinema Bar and Café will be hostingan evening of the best films (seven “shorts” and one featurefilm) from the 2008 festival. Not surprisingly, the feature filmand four of the shorts are New Zealand documentaries. Inaddition to the abovementioned Calici film there’s XtremeWaste, a lighthearted and inspiring look at how the localcommunity at the surfing mecca Raglan have turned theirrubbish into recyclables. Not to be outdone, three SouthIsland teenagers have produced Bright Ideas, a five minutedocumentary about energy saving initiatives at Nelson BoysCollege. The feature film, The Nuclear Comeback, is also ahome grown film, by New Zealander Justin Pemberton.

Reel Earth will be screening at the Featherston Cinema Barand Café on Friday, November 14th, from 7-10pm. Snackswill be served at intermission and drinks are available forpurchase. Tickets are limited, and can be purchased throughthe Cinema or by contacting Sarah Wyn Pettus([email protected] or 308 8367). For moreinformation about the films or Reel Earth, go towww.reelearth.org.nz .

Steve Chapman (Mr. Sold!)MARKET NEWSWith sprimg here and the weather improving (slightly) I have noticed moreWellington buyers coming over the hill to look at Featherston properties.Properties are selling quite well but price is a consideration with buyers atthe moment. If they perceive it to be overpriced they will look at cheaperproperties first. The good news is that inerest rates are falling on home loans and the priceof petrol is also coming down. This means that people will start to feel morepositive about the market and the economy and this will have a good spinoffin the housing market. Also buyers will be happy once the Election is out ofthe way and we know which way the country is heading.Things are not as bad as they may seem so we all need to think positiveand good things will happen! We all live in a good little town with a goodcommunity spirit.

This month we would like to saythank you to the team of workers who came and did awonderful job of topping up our sandpit, tidying up the stonegardens and putting up the brustics on our fence. Cominginto the kindergarten on the first morning of term, it was lovelyto see the great job that they had done.

Letter to the EditorDear Editor,

Featherston is a great place to live

There are so many great things in this town to celebrateabout, however they get very little publicity. It is only whenthe negative and not so ‘nice’ things happen in the town thatwe ‘hit’ the media attention. The only way to combat this isfor ALL to ensure we look after one another by smiling, talking, helping out and getting to know our neighbours.

When we see something we know is not right DO somethingabout it DON’T turn a blind eye and pretend it is nothappening. Don’t say to yourself I won’t get involved incase I am seen as noisy or interfering – or if it is not happeningto me or affecting me I will carry on my own selfish way. . .Let us make this NOT the way of Featherston people.

There are many fantastic things about this town – letscelebrate them by being the very best citizens we can bybecoming connected and involved in whatever way wecan. We do not want to become ANTS (anti negativethoughts) people but people who care about people.

He aha te mea nui o te ao?He tangata! He tangata! He tangata! What is the most important thing in the world? It is people! It is people! It is people

Burglary at Pool2 weeks ago we found that our Featherston Swimming poolclubrooms and the pool custodian office had been brokeninto. Swimming stopwatches, goggles, our BBQ and aportable speaker-sound system were stolen. A mess wasmade but that’s what you expect in a burglary. There is neverany cash left on our premises.

Our swimming club runs on a few hardworking committedcommittee members and coaches who provide at a veryreasonable cost, swimming lessons to the children of theFeatherston district.

Our BBQ was in very good condition, only used at the annualCommunity Swimming relay, our own Club Carnival and forthe Athletic club at their Tri-athalon events. It enabled us tofundraise for our own local swimming club.

Our wonderful sound system we had had only 2 years. Itmeant we could provide a professional edge to our own townevents and the Featherston Swimming club loaned it to theFell Engine Society and other town events, as you do in acommunity to help out.

We are really disappointed in the people that removed ourgear, especially our BBQ and Sound System. You wouldhave needed a ute or van as they wouldn’t have fitted in acar. The Sound System is in a very long large black case, asbig as a small child. Perhaps someone noticed a van or similarvehicle up next to the pool or at the rugby rooms, please tellthe Featherston Police.

We would like this gear back, we need this gear, weuse this gear.

Last swimming season our club worked really hard to provideextra voluntary lessons, funded by our own community Boardfor up to 14 children, that needed swimming skills, whowouldn’t normally have been able to attend swimming. Wehave limited insurance and now the time spent chasinginsurance claims is time taken out of what we do best –providing Featherston children with Learn to swim.

Movies currently showing in November– Edge of Heaven, Grow your own, Apron Strings and Mongol s/t.Rain of Children, The Hollow men, Raise of the foot soldier, Irina Palm, The Counterfeiters, Charlie Bartlett,Jinx Sister,Movies coming - Brides head revisited, Young at heart solder, Up the Yangtze, Rubbings from a live man.Favourite Movies - Edge of Heaven is definitely a European film not to be missed. I enjoyed the lightheartedyoung adult movie Charlie Bartlett. The true story of ‘Raise of the foot soldier’ was sadistic and violence, (Iwatched half of it with my eyes closed) the rest of the story was worth watching. Looking forward to the NZmovies, Jinx sister, Rain of Children and Apron strings. Irina Palm (Maryanne Faithful) tickles my fancy.

The Hollow men will be shown as a fundraiser for Denise Mackenzie – Wairarapa Labour Party Candidate onSunday 2 November at 2pm,

Authorised by Lyn Patterson, 23 Titoki Street, Masterton.” Tickets $25.00. There will also be a public showing at 5.30pm.
