Volume XIII Issue XOCTOBER 2008

Well, actually, it was three days of sheer pleasure with thearrival of the Chor-Farmer choir to Featherston on Thursday11th September.

After being welcomed to Featherston by the Mayor MrsAdrienne Staples, the choir were then transported to theMemorial Site Messines Way, by Wairarapa Coachlines. There the Choir paid tribute to those who had lost theirlives during the incident at the POW camp on 23rd Feb1943. This is always a very solemn and moving time for thechoir members with prayers and songs shown with a lot ofemotion. Members of the Choir and the Heritage Museumlaid wreaths at the three memorials. The Choir were invitedto Lunch at the Tin Hut by JNL Masterton, including threemembers from the Japanese Embassy of Wellington, and afew other invited guests.

At 3pm host families, were waiting at the Anzac Hall readyto take their Billets home for a nice cuppa etc. mean whileBrenda, Marion, Jean & Joe were busy in the kitchenpreparing the Concert Supper.

From 7pm onwards, the Anzac Hall started filling withconcert goers awaiting the performances from our ownFeatherston Gentlemen Singers and the Chor-Farmer Choir.John Pearce (Chairman) welcomed everyone, on behalf ofthe Heritage Museum.

And Boy!!!, the audience were not disappointed, with thecalibre of the singing, every song was of world standard, and with Miss Masako Yuyama’s piano recital of “Rhapsodyin Blue” was just fantastic, the audience giving her a standingovation. For the final item Mr Masumoto (Conductor)invited the Gentlemen Singers to join the choir for a renditionof “Now is the Hour”. This was a fitting end to the Concert.

Those who enjoyed the concert included, Mr Minoya, MrYamada, Ms Morimoto from the Japanese Embassy,Wellington. John Hayes MP for Wairarapa, Bob Francis,Masterton, Mrs Bedford from Japan, Mr Ota (Auckland)The Probus Club from Upper Hutt, plus in excess of over250 other concert goers.

What a Night it Was - What a NightErica Tenquist and Don Staples of the Anzac Club made apresentation to the Chor- Farmer and Kuniko Polglase inregard to the purchase of the Piano.

A presentation was made on behalf of the Chor-Farmer tothe Mayor Mrs Adrienne Staples.

Many of the audience stayed and enjoyed a Light Supperand the opportunity to meet with the Choir members.

Friday was A Free day for the Choir members and whilemost preferred to relax and stay “at home” others were takenaround the area seeing many sights of the Wairarapa.

Friday evening saw the Heritage Committee presenting theChoir members with a Cap, embroidered with the words“Heritage Museum, Featherston New Zealand”. This wasvery well received and I know the hats will be worn withpride. Thanks must go to the Trust House Charitable Trustof Masterton for the funding for these. This was followedby; a Mix & Mingle Meal held in the Kiwi Hall where Hosts,Sponsors, helpers and members of the Gentlemen Singersenjoyed a great night of Fun & Frolic, this included an itemby some of the “boys” demonstrating the many ways theNew Caps could be worn. While demonstrating this theyperformed their own version of a “dance routine,” whichwas very funny. We had a great night with singing, music andlaughter provided by the Chor-Farmer Boys plus Val Wilton,Dave Winter, Ian Miles, Barry & Jo Bentley, Bruce Livingstonand the Chor-Farmer Boys plus others from the GentlemenSingers. The “chicken dance” had everyone on the floor. The evening ended with the singing of “Now is the Hour”and “Auld Lang Syne”.

Special thanks to the St Teresa’s School committee whowere the kitchen staff for the evening; this was wonderful forus, as we usually stay in the kitchen and unable to get theopportunity to socialise.

Saturday morning dawned bright and clear and it was nowtime to say “goodbye” to a group of extremely nice, friendlypeople, from across the world. One of our hosts Dave Jonesdid a Haka for the “Boys” who wanted to learn it as well –Dave has promised to teach them next time.

ANZAC HALL KITCHEN TRAYSHave you seen the four large rimu trays that belongin the ANZAC Hall? They are clearly marked on the underside with“ANZAC”If you have them, or know where they are, pleasereturn them to the ANZAC Hall (key at the Library) orto 12 Bethune Street, Featherston.

John TenquistSecretary, Featherston ANZAC Club Soc. Inc.

August started off with a family evening which was attendedby the children and their families. Each family bought theirdinner with them and Zappo arrived after dinner to entertainthe children (and adults). Everyone had a fantastic nightand there was a great deal of laughter and fun. A big thankyou to Zappo for his wonderful ‘Space’ show which thechildren (big and small) enjoyed.

During September children showed interest in areas of art, drama, dancing and music. The teachers would like to extendthese interests and would like members of the public withskills or interest in these areas to contact them if they areinterested in working with the children in any of these areas.

Thank you to Wairarapa DHB for a $1000 Heha grant. This money is going to go towards the development of akitchen garden. The plan is to plant vegetable seeds/seedlings with the children, care for the plants as they growand then to harvest the crops that are produced. Theharvested crops will then be used for morning tea and in thechildren’s process cooking. The aim of this project is topromote healthy eating choices with the children and forthem to work through the gardening process.

We would also like to thank South Wairarapa VeterinaryServices vet Rodger for taking the time to come and visit usand give Rapeti (our rabbit) a health check and for tendingto one of our budgies who had a sore claw. The supportfrom the businesses and members of the wider Featherstoncommunity is very important to us and we really appreciatethe ways in which our kindergarten is supported by them.

We continue to have people in our playground outside ofsession hours and with the term break here this is somethingof concern to the teachers. These people are damaging ourproperty and tormenting our rabbit. We are also liable forany accidents that happen to these people while on ourgrounds. If you see people in the kindergarten groundsoutside of kindergarten hours please ring and speak to oneof our teachers, notify the police or leave a message. Thekindergarten phone number is 308 9162.

At the end of term we said farewell to Rose one of ourteaching team. Rose and her husband have moved to theManawatu. We wish her well and look forward to meetingour new teacher when the new term starts.

We hope that all of our families are enjoying their term break. We look forward to seeing everyone back at kindergartenon Monday, 13th October and hope that the new term willsee the start of some nice, sunny outdoor weather.

Dear Sir,

I agree with issues raised in the last issue of Phoenix regarding“Being a Safer Community”.

There is a need to clamp down on illegal activities in town, along overdue need. At the moment these crooks are left todo whatever they fancy, burglaries, vandalism, illegal driving. They know the sheriff is off duty and the community is largelyapathetic, ignorant and toothless! That situation makes mevery angry!

We pay a potion of our taxes to have Police, so lets have itat a time of need, the night time. Calling for Grannies to drivearound at night with cell-phones at their expense and risk, isnot right. Nor is it right to ask the business community tocontribute more finance to upkeep order, they pay plentyalready. The moneys we all pay should be used wisely, butsome of it seems wasted on lesser important issues.

I have called the Featherston Police on numerous occasionsonly to end up talking to a call-centre operator outside thedistrict who had of course no local knowledge. They weremore interested in recording my details than the details of thereason for calling. If the reason for my call was hooningaround, losing traction in town, their answer was: “go outand get the registration number”!!! Yeah right, at 2.30am Iventure around to record evidence for the police and ifnoticed by the crooks, put my safety at risk, get real! Onenight I rang three times about the same racing activity onlyhaving to go thru the same intro every time and the police didnot come, the high-speed racing did not stop for hoursthereafter. Useless!

I could go on. This calls for a community meeting andsubsequent lobbying of those elected Council officials whoseem to sit on their hands with gorse in the public pockets. We should ask Carterton’s boss for advice with regard tothose issues, he appears to have control.

Thanks for your interest.

Literacy is Choice, Changeand Freedom

There’s a new store in town and already its turning headsand stopping cars. Karm, the brainchild of Featherstonresident Becky Matthews and husband Graham Matthews, showcases contemporary furniture, homeware, art, and livingproducts with an eco twist.

In addition to eyecatching recyclable plastic lounge chairsand coffee tables, Karm boasts a collection of recycledglassware products, organic cotton linen and towels, NewZealand Wool Blankets, and a full range of Ecostorepersonal products.

Although much of the furniture and artwork is currently beingimported from Bali, Becky hopes in the future to displaymostly New Zealand made goods. “My goal over the nextfew months is to increase my stock of New Zealand productsand to raise the profile of these brands. I’m also looking tobuild up my range of $20-$50 gifts items in time forChristmas.”

An artist and supporter of the arts herself (she spearheadedFeatherston’s first annual Art Sale at the Community Centrelast December) Becky is passionate about displayingWairarapa artwork and to that end is keen to hear fromlocal artists.

Karm opened for business on Saturday, September 7th, withover a hundred people dropping by that first weekend. Beckysays that feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, andthat her goal of attracting both locals and Wellingtoniansseems to be working.

“I wouldn’t set up anywhere else but in Featherston,” sheexclaims. “We need more people to take this step. The morebusinesses open and thriving here the better the flow-oneffect for everyone.”

Karm is located between the train tracks and the Rapa Caféin the old Harper’s Bazaar building - not that you’drecognise the place. After eight months of renovation byDale Finlay and his team, the building bears no resemblanceto its former self. The new verandah, huge showcasewindows, globe light fixtures set into the high ceiling, off-street parking and native grass landscaping have all raisedthe bar for what people can expect from Featherston.

Karm is open Friday through Monday, from 10:00am-5:00pm.

Robyn says some older people see no-one from one weekto the next and their world becomes very small.

Voluntary visiting is a wonderful gift, just one hour eachweek can bring comfort and happiness to an older person.

Working Together Council’s decision last week to endorse the Barr-BrownAction Plan is an excellent result as far as FeatherstonWalkways and Reserves Trust is concerned. The Trust’splan, to manage the Reserve so that the 400 year old totarasand other natives can thrive, will now go ahead. The Counciland Community Board have been right behind the projectfrom the start and, while the Trust has to find most of thefunds, they see this endorsement, as Council also does, as awin-win situation.

Mayor Adrienne Staples sees this type of initiative as an idealway for the community to undertake projects which theybelieve to be important. “The Council enjoys this sort ofengagement. Residents are more likely to buy-in to a projectwhich they initiate and they help us meet our goals for thecommunity as well.”

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between theCouncil and the Trust will be developed similar to the onedeveloped with the Mainstreet Beautification Group a few

years ago. Cr Porky Sexton and Featherston CommunityBoard’s Helen Walker are now representing the Counciland the Community Board on the Trust.

Several community organizations have either contributed tothe tasks outlined in the Action Plan, or the walkway brochuresoon to be produced), or to signage for the reserve orwalkway - Featherston Lioness Club, South WairarapaRotary and the Community Board. The Council has suppliedposts for signage, and Featherston Lions are about to erectnew signs at Barr Brown and other walkway sites. Volunteersare also coming forward with ideas and offering to help inkind.

Pest control, mainly rats, will be the first task. This will becarried out by volunteers trained by the Regional Counciland will prevent the loss of seeds which will allow regeneration.Ground-cover weed control will follow. Over 40 species ofweeds are currently present, a huge increase on the numbernoted during an earlier botanic survey in 1977. The biggestand most expensive task will be the removal of the some ofthe macrocarpas, pines, and other exotics overshadowingthe natives. Some of these, however, will be retained forwind protection.

“Even in its present state, the Reserve is a lovely, specialspot, which Featherstonians and visitors can enjoy. It needsTLC as far as weeds, competing exotic trees, and pests areconcerned, for it to continue that way in the future”, Trustspokesperson, Maria Fairburn says. “Access can also beimproved, and we want to work on that as well”.
