Wanted: Mentors Mentoring to increase diversity http://www.ohsu.edu/blogs/researchnews/2014/02/10/interested-in-mentoring-to-increase-diversity/

The Oregon Clinical & Translational Research Institute is participating in two collaborative NIH planning grants

to increase diversity in the scientific workforce. They are actively seeking mentors for both proposals. Please

consider participating in one or both

BUILD

In partnership with PSU, we propose an innovative program for undergraduate students to increase the diversity

pipeline into STEM careers in research. We are seeking OHSU faculty mentors willing to work with diversity

students in early scientific inquiry, sponsor short research rotations, or summer mentorship. Mentors need not

have funded research; we encourage mentors who may come from disadvantaged backgrounds. This program

may involve as many as 100 undergraduate students in each year, and include minority or disadvantaged students

from Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii and Pacific Islands. If you are interested, please contact Colleen

Berretta [email protected]. Mentors may be compensated for their time. Questions? Please contact Cindy

Morris [email protected]

National Research Mentoring Network. The NRMN initiative will develop a highly networked set of motivated and skilled mentors from a variety of

biomedical research disciplines linked to mentees from the undergraduate to early career faculty level across the

country. Research mentors must have NIH funding; career mentors must have experience mentoring across

diversity. Mentors may commit to mentoring a trainee nationally using electronic media over a year, or may have

only a one-time encounter. The NRMN will develop best practices for mentoring, provide training opportunities

for mentors, and provide networking and professional opportunities for mentees. If you are interested, please

forward a biosketch to Colleen Berretta [email protected] and indicate if you wish to be considered as a

research or career mentor. Questions? Please contact Cindy Morris [email protected]

Opportunities still available

Summer Equity program

This program provides an opportunity for talented undergraduate students to work in our laboratories and receive

mentorship on research and on applying to graduate programs. This is a major opportunity for our programs to

recruit diverse students into our programs. Equity students are paid a stipend and provided with housing through

the Center for Diversity and Inclusion. This year Graduate Studies is able to help off set travel expenses for

students interested in the PhD programs so that students from outside Portland are encouraged to apply and

participate. We need research mentors who will provide lab materials, and mentorship time, during the weeks of

16 June-8 August. If you are able to accept a student into your lab, please send: your name, department and a

sentence or two describing your research to Leslie Garcia [email protected] and copy Allison Fryer

[email protected]. The admission committee will be run by graduate faculty and will do their best to match

students with lab interests; we will let all mentors know by May '14 whether they have been matched with an

Equity Student.

PSI high school science outreach program http://o2.ohsu.edu/blogs/somresearchvoice/2014/01/24/wanted-mentors-for-psi-high-school-science-outreach-program/

The OHSU Partnership for Scientific Inquiry (PSI) is a successful science outreach program which attracts

bright and talented high school students who have a keen interest in science and medicine. The program needs

research faculty and post-doc mentors. Mentors will attend one class at OHSU to give a brief presentation to the

students and then meet periodically with an assigned student to help them read a peer-reviewed article and

prepare a research proposal. The class meets throughout the second semester and begins Monday, Feb. 3.

Most mentors will also host their student in the summer, involving them in research. However, providing a

summer research experience is optional. To volunteer or for more information, please contact Tammy Martin at

[email protected] or 503 494-3372.

reaches 14,600 SoM alumni and has a small distribution on campus. The spring issue will be mailed out in May.

Do you have anything you’d like included for Graduate Studies/graduate programs or an idea for possible

consideration?

In your opinion, which SoM faculty, students and/or alumni are doing particularly outstanding things?

Someone who is breaking ground, taking an interesting path, making waves?

When you think of major Graduate Studies/graduate program news or achievements at OHSU over the

last six months, what comes to mind?

Are there upcoming changes or future items that we should share?

Additional thoughts, ideas?

Anyone else I should contact? Who else would be a good source of information?

She’s casting a wide net to ensure that a good lineup is developed and if you’re suggestion doesn’t run this issue,

it may be considered for later issues or other SoM channels. Please send any suggestions to [email protected]

WEEKLY FUNDING ALERTS

Week of 02.13.14

Featured Funding Opportunities

Methamphetamine Abuse Research Center (MARC) Pilot Project Research Proposals Description: Each year the MARC provides funding for approximately three one-to-two year projects intended to bring new research directions, approaches, and investigators into the center. Proposals will be evaluated each year on their scientific merit and innovation and on their alignment with the MARCs research themes, which include:

Neuroadaptation to methamphetamine; Neurocircuitry of methamphetamine response; Impulsivity as a predictor of methamphetamine abuse or as a characteristic that may be altered by

methamphetamine; Neuroimmune response (drug-induced or endogenous differences in neuroimmune function that affect the

response to methamphetamine); Translation between preclinical and clinical models of methamphetamine effects/abuse.

Pilots funded in an initial year are eligible for consideration for a second year of funding; however, all investigators who have received an initial year of funding must submit a new proposal describing their progress and proposed work for a second year of funding. Projects are also intended to generate preliminary data for future R-type grant applications. Deadline: April 7, 2014 Amount: Up to $25,000 per year for up to two years. Eligibility: All OHSU and VA faculty interested in methamphetamine research may submit proposals. Postdoctoral trainees are not eligible. OCTRI – Pilot Project Funding for Catalyzing Translational Research Opportunities REVISED Description: The Oregon Clinical & Translational Research Institute (OCTRI) is now accepting letters of intent to apply for Pilot Project Funding for projects designed to enhance translational research at OHSU. This funding mechanism is offered in close collaboration with the SOM Research Roadmap, but is open to all OHSU faculty. OCTRI will award up to 6 awardees ($400,000 total) to facilitate novel, collaborative, multidisciplinary studies that will lead to further research and funding in translational research. This funding is specifically intended to enable the development of compelling new grant applications that will sustain the proposed research activity.
