Festival of the Voice 2014 offers the finest in vocal and musical talents and invites you to Sing, Speak, Listen and Celebrate.

From open rehearsal of Mendelssohn’s ‘Elijah’ with Kingston Orpheus Choir to a rehearsed reading of ‘Bás’, a poignant new play by Henry Collie and Tom Russell-Jones, this festival has something for everyone, and many events are free.

Join Joshua Alamu, an established London-based vocal coach, in a singing workshop to discover your vocal potential, or treat your children to a story-time, inspired by Beatrix Potter. Celebrate the 450th birthday of the great Bard, with local actors and musicians who will share songs, sonnets and scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. Leading Jazz vocalist, Tina May, will explore ‘Voice in Jazz’, while Radio Jackie’s Neil Long will assist you in making voice-over show reels.

Be captivated by the beautiful sounds of Tiffin Boys’ Choir in Evensong services, the first of which is a celebration of the poetry of George Herbert and the second a Lenten evensong, featuring Allegri’s Miserere mei, Deus. Thames Philharmonic Choir will also present an evensong with music by Brahms, George Dyson, Christopher Tye and Benjamin Costello.

Song-writers and poets will entrance you with their original compositions before you journey into the world of electronica, as Kingston Arts takes its first plunge into showcasing an organic blend of electronic music.

Rounding off the Festival will be Kingston Choral Society (KCS) with Monteverdi Vespers of 1610. KCS is joined by six soloists and the outstanding musicians of the English Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble and Purcell Orchestra.

As this year’s Festival Director, I am delighted, on behalf of Kingston Arts, to offer you an exciting and varied programme which promises to encapsulate and celebrate the very best in voice and music.

“It is World War One. A Welsh minister and an Irish guard become trapped in a dug-out aftera German night raid. Amidst their struggles to communicate, they quickly realise the gravity of their plight is greater than they had envisaged. Bás is touring the UK throughout 2014, performed by newcomers ‘Schizothemia’.

The Lovekyn Consort will perform delightful vocal duets from Monteverdi’s Scherzi Musicali collections, along with trios by Salomone Rossi. There will also be sacred music by Bach, trios by Handel and McGibbon and some recent compositions. See www.lokimusic.co.uk for further details.

Leading UK jazz singer, Tina May, illustrates the role of the voice in jazz. Using recorded examples, she will explore its role from the early blues of Bessie Smith, through the close harmonies of the Mills Brothers, Hi-Lo’s and improvised scatting, to interpretations of popular songs by the likes of Billie Holiday and Mel Tormé, and on into more contemporary examples of the art.

Kingston Arts is excited to present its first foray into electronic music. ‘Adventures in Electronica’ will showcase the very best in electronically based music, past and present, instrumental and vocal. From ambient soundscapes to explosive percussion, the adventure shall weave an evocative and evolving mix of genres. This is not a club night.

Attend a service in the newly-renovated Nave of All Saints’ Church, undergoing an extensive restoration project under the aegis of architect Ptolemy Dean. The choral music at evensong is sung by the celebrated All Saints’ Choir conducted by Simon Toyne, accompanied by organist Stephen Westrop, and features well-loved music by Noble (Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B minor) and Wesley (Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace).

Have you ever wanted to find out how to free your voice up to do what you really want it to do? Joshua Alamu, (The Voice UK, vocal coach and vocal producer on multiple recording projects), will be showing you how to tap into your vocal talent and take it to the next level. If you are focused and want to become the greatest vocalist you can possibly be, this is for you!
