‘We want tospread economicdevelopment’“The aim of the greater project is to industrialise and modernise our economy. Wewant to spread economic developmentoutside the main areas in the province –Durban, Pietermaritzburg and RichardsBay. The aim is also to respond to the challenges facing the global economy and address issues on inequities.

“To do this, we foresee creating clusters of companies that can deliver more together than alone – that can create linkages to bring their costs down,” saidNtsoane.

He said the renewable energy aspectwould also alleviate poverty, attract investment in green industry goods and services and promote a highgrowth industry. It seeks to use sustainable natural resources and promote energy efficiency, amongst others.

Arup Energy Consulting’s Andrew Bow

den presented the research that the company has done into creating renewable energy systems in iLembe.

He said various concepts such as solarenergy, hydropowerandbiomass, withthislast being the most viable due to the sugarcane industry, had been explored,

“There is not enough solar energy potential to support the area on a large scale, but it would work on a small scale,” saidBowden.

He said hydro energy had been lookedinto extensively, with the inland site ofJameson’s Drift inland along the Tugela

River being promising. The site could produce 31MW at a low

cost. The Mvoti River would only provide3.5MW at a high cost.

In terms of biomass, Bowden said theSugar Association SA estimated the industry had the potential to generate712MW, creating 38 000 jobs.

This would involve the burning ofbagasse, a sugarprocessing byproduct.Bowden said CO2 emissions from the process were minimal to none.

He said industry leaders are also looking electricity production, with some al

ready exporting the resource. In 2012/2013TongaatHulett generated 427GWh.

“TongaatHulett is aiming to start exporting electricity from their two Northernplants Felixton and Amatikulu withinnext two years and will be considering theirother mills, including Darnall, thereafter,”said Bowden.

He said having the Darnall and Gledhow mills nearby make the scheme ideal.

iLembe Chamber of Commerce CEO Cobus Oelofse said while the renewable energy project was exciting, potential investors

and government must be realistic.“Intensive research needs to be done

before this can go ahead.“None of our FET colleges offer jobs

that will enable job seekers with the skillsthey need to work in the renewable energyindustry and this needs to be explored.

“There are also a number of businessblocks standing empty at the moment. Weneed to look at making use of these beforebuilding more facilities,” said Oelofse.

Ntsoane said the project is not“just a pipedream, it will happen”.

Move over, Maslow

STEPH MCLENNAN

ABOUTH a million years ago, someguynamedMaslow, whohad way too much time on his

hands, put togethera triangularhier-archy of needs, detailing what hethought were the most essentialthings for people to be in possessionof.

Ever since, high school and uni-versity students around the worldhave been falling asleep in lessons

and lectures while the teacher, asboredashisorhersubjects, dronesonabout this hierarchy.

The soporific effect of Maslowhas even been felt in examinations, where students have failed coursesdue to falling asleep in papers whichincluded questions about Maslowand his blasted hierarchy.

So, to sum up this hierarchy soquicklythatyouwon'thavetimetofallasleep, Maslow states that the firstlevel of needs pertains to physiologi-cal matters. Food. Air. Excretion.Sleep.

Inotherwords, thebasicelementsrequired to not be dead.

His second level ofneeds relates tosecurity needs — a job, health andproperty.

The third deals with love and be-longing.

By rights, Maslow should get amentioninthe credits of every gooeychick-flick ever made.

On level four, getting to the stuff

that Maslow thinks only the elitereach, sits things like self-confidenceand earning the respect of others.

On the fifth level is the lofty notionof self-actualisation, a word not spo-ken outside the halls of academiasince 1850.

This encompasses traits likemorality, creativity, and the abilityto be non-judgmental.

Here are the problems I havewithMaslow — his ideas are poncy andoutdated, and have no resonancewith the 21st century.

Most of all, I take exception toMaslow'sbeliefthatonecannotreachlevel two until you have level onewrapped up, and so on.

To my non-academic brain, thisimplies that no homeless person canbe creative, that no unemployed per-soncanhavemoralscruples,andthatinsomniacs can never fall in love.

Also, as a person who relies uponmy creativity (level five) formy breadand butter (level one), I assure you

that my bodily functions are all inorder.

In 21st-Century South Africa, inwhich each economic recession isworse than the last, each presidentmore corrupt than his predecessorand where everything is uncertain, doesoneeverpermanentlymovepastlevel one.

Or does one cling to the attributesof levels two to five in order to sustainlevel one?

Here's how, inmy opinion, a 21st-Century list of needs looks.

Therearenolevels, becauseallareas imperative to truly living as thenext:

oxygen (aspollution-freeaspossi-ble);

a roof over our head (brick andmortar for the fortunate such as my-self);

friends (to provide a roof whenone'sownis takenawaybythebank);

a passion and a purpose (withoutthis there is little point to getting outofbed),self-confidence(orat least theability to fake it,becausenobody likesor employs a wallflower), and laugh-ter(becausewithoutthis,breathingisfutile).

I SIMPLY could not resist in commenting onSibusiso’s column: “Yes, but no one wasaround during the big bang”. Indeed, yourfriend is right in questioning this theory because it simply is not factual and scienceis based only on facts, period.

The big bang is a theory that sounds impressive on the surface, but simply doesnot hold up to extensive examination. Hereis how the big bang is often presented:somewhere between 18 and 20 billionyears ago, all of the matter in the universewas compressed into a tiny space no largerthan a dot on a page.

This dot spun faster and faster until itexploded, thuscreatingtheuniverse.Thereare many problems with this theory. Andthe theory itself still does not answer manyimportant questions, such as where did all

the matter in the universe come from? Ifall the matter in the universe was compressed into a small dot, what caused thisto happen? Where did gravity come fromthatheldittogether?Ifthisdotspunrapidly until it exploded, then where did the energy come from to start the spinning? Also,in an environment without friction youwould have this spinning dot going so fastit would then explode.

If this happened, then all of the particlesand matter being expelled from this spinning dot would all have to spin in the samedirection as the dot they exploded from.

This is a known law of science, whichthose who believe in evolution cannot doaway with. It is known as the Conservationof Angular Momentum. This matter, whichis said to have created the planets, wouldall need to spin in the same direction as theobject it came from. So therefore, all of the

planets should be spinning in the same direction. However, two of them are not. Venus and Uranus spin backwards. Someplanets even have moons that not onlyspin backwards, but travel backwardsaround their planets. The big bang theoryalso ignores the First law of Thermodynamics, which says: “Matter cannot be created or destroyed.”

Those who believe in the big bang theory are also either unaware of, or ignore the"Second Law of Thermodynamics" whichsays: “Everything tends towards disorder.”

So rather than the chaos (big bang) becoming ordered (our universe), just the opposite would be true. And it is. Our complexuniverse is wearing down and becomingmore chaotic. The big bang theory alsoteaches that in another 80 to 100 billionyears, all of the matter that makes up ourEarth and solar system will become com

pressed again. A big bang is said to occurevery 80 to 100 billion years. As absurd asthe big bang theory is, it is widely acceptedbecause the only other choice is a divinecreator. And some people will believe themost ridiculous theory, rather than evenentertain the possibility that there couldbe a Creator. As I see it, there are only twochoices.

Either someone created the Earth, orthe Earth created itself, (despite all theknown Laws of Science saying it couldn'thave happened this way).

In conclusion: those big bangers, evolutionists, atheist scientists should insteadbe as constructive as other scientists infinding cures for diseases and solutions toother environmental problems rather thanseeking to confuse people with their theories of no use to anyone.

Sue Naidoo

Big bang again

IDOtalksatschools, encouragingteensto make the right choices in life whenit comes to choosing friends, smoking, drugs, alcohol abuse, bullying and pornography.

When it comes to pornography, ourchildren have access to the internet ontheir cellphones, or friend's cellphone,as well as the traditional magazines, strippers and DVDs.

In my talks I stress how easy it is tobecome a porn addict, and how degrading it is to women, to be seen purely as a sexual being. By indulging inporn, one is supporting the industry, and in most cases, making immoralpeople wealthy, at the expense of thedignity and respect of women.

Most men, driven by testosterone, have a weakness for the trap of pornography, and unfortunately, porn ismade light of at times, and not seenfor the dangerous addiction it is.

When our children learn that theirparents indulge in pornography, itmakes the practice almost acceptable,or at least, “not that bad?” “After all,if my parent(s) watch porn, how badcan it really be — just harmless fun, surely.”

I ask the question of the school boysI talk to: “How would you like thatwoman, in the porn scene, to be yourmother or sister? Degrading isn’t it?”

Here is a challenge to all those whomight relate to this letter.

Let's set the example to our children, and make our homes “porn free”,as much as we possibly can. Let usthrow the “trash” into the trash, whereno one else can access it.

And if it's appropriate, do it withyour teenager's company and/or buyin. Let them know that your householddoes not believe in degrading women, but believe that women need to beseen as God's creation, deserving of respect, not just a physical body forman's pleasure.

WEEKLY REPORTER

DARNALL United VolleyballClub stunned tournamentfavourites Sunbrook (2-0) to

clinch the Moon & Sons Agencies-sponsoredKwaDukuzaVolleyballAs-sociation Social League KnockoutCupbeforeahugecrowdattheassoci-ation courts on Tuesday night.

Darnall proved in Tuesday’s finalthat they havemore than one dimen-sion in attacking and have been ac-claimed for embracing a newattack-ing strategy that saw them clinchtheir first major silverware of the2014 season.

Sunbrook hardly fired a shot ontarget in the first couple of minutesand it came as no surprise whenmanagerDevanMoonsamycalled foran early timeoutwithhis side trailingat 2-7.

Darnall virtually gang-tackledtheir rivals, leaving their opponentsbaffled and wondering from wherethe next attack would come.

Sunbrook have been such abreathtaking brutal force in attack

throughout the league competition, leading up to Tuesday night’s final, but after their lack lustre perform-anceatthestart,theirfanswereshak-ing their heads in disbelief.

Midway into the first set Darnallenjoyedacomfortablesix-pointcush-ion (15-9) and it seemed improbable

that they would step off the accelera-tor. But, lapses of concentration andsome shocking unforced errors sawthem squander their lead before thescores were locked at 20-20.

But, it was their unremitting de-fence at the death that saw themclinch the first set (25-21) after ab-sorbing everything threw at them bythe Sunbrook attackers.

Moonsamy did not mince hiswordsduring thebreakandhis char-ges returned to the courts at the startof the second setwith renewed confi-dence. Kally Ganasen, who has beenfiring blanks throughout the first setgot his act together to give Sunbrooka 6-2 lead.

But, Darnall’s attacking trio,Nishendra “Niknaks” Dhaver, PoppyNaidoo and Kevin Moodaly relishedthe brilliant sets of DuranMoodaly toputpointson thescoreboardandcol-lar their rivals at 9-9.

Sugan Munien, who had a shock-ing first set, started to findhis rhythmand combined well with Ganasen torestoreSunbrook’s lead(14-11), forc-ing the“sugar-cane” lads into their1st

timeout. With the scores tied at 20-20, the

facial expression on the faces of theSunbrookbench (compared to that oftheiropponents) revealed theirconfi-dence in their heroes. Fans expectedDarnall to succumb to the late pres-sure, but they silenced their critics, holding onto a thrilling 25-22 win toclinch the Moon & Sons Agencies KOCup.

In an earlier game Cool Leaderstrounced Virgo 15-12; 15-12 to se-cure a podium finish.

President of KwaDukuza Volley-ball association Isaac Abraham ex-pressed his sincere thanks to DevanMoonsamy (CEO of moon & SonsAgencies) for his generous sponsor-ship in promoting volleyball inKwaDukuza.
