Anthropology honours graduateThenjiwe Mswane is planning tomaketheworldabetterplaceandhasbeen begging in Hilton and near thePavilion shopping centre to do so.

Mswane (24) graduated fromRhodes University with her honours

in anthropology and a bachelor ofsocial sciences in politics, anthropol-ogy and legal studies and a postgrad-uate LLB from the University ofKwaZulu-Natal.

Mswane said after she hadcompletedher studies at Rhodes, shetravelled to the United Kingdom and

began working for an organisationcalledOneBillionRising. The organi-sation strives to eradicate the abuseof women and Mswane was quicklyappointed the co-ordinator for SouthAfrica.

As Mswane spent time workingwith abused woman and listening to

their stories, she felt she did notunderstand the full extent of abuse.

“I felt like I did not have a globalperspective of woman abuse. I wasconstantly in contact with femalemutilation victims and child marria-ges, and we don’t see this in SA.”

Mswanespoketoherbossandsaid

that if she was going to make a realdifference in the world, she wouldneed a better understanding of thehuman rights issue happeningaround the globe.

“I am hoping to start my mastersin England next year in an MA indiplomacy, international law andhuman rights,” said Mswane.

As this course is not offered inSouthAfrica,Mswanesaidshewouldhavetogooverseasto fulfilherdreamofhelpingwomeninSouthAfricaandall over the globe.

MSUNDUZI Municipality’srecentauditonstreettradingshows that there are 436

illegal street traders trading inPietermaritzburg’s CBD district.

Addressing the Municipal PublicAccounts Committee (Mpac), theprocess manager for local economicdevelopment, Sipho Zimu, said thatthe audit was based on the square ofChurch, Boshoff, Retief and BergStreet.

Zimu said that there are only 600authorised street traders.

“We established that there wereabout436 illegal street traderson thestreets.Wecameupwiththeplanandthe time frames, which we arecurrently undertaking. We are meet-ing regularly with the informalchamber on some of the issues. Wearealsodealingwith therelocationofstreet traders inconsultationwiththeinformal chamber.

“Wedon’thavefundingforthatbutwe felt that there should be a separa-tion between enforcement and streetregulation, because we cannotactually control the enforcement. It

was felt that if we employ individualswho aregoingtomendthestreets,wemay as well do away with theproblem.

“We have about 600 legal tradersand we have actually issued themwith identity cards for ease ofenforcement. In this way, if enforce-

ment is done and a person does notproduce an ID card, itmeans that theindividualistradingillegally,”hesaid.

He said that the local economicdevelopment unit has alreadysubmitted a report to council on theidentification, demarcation andallocation of new street trading sites.

He said that this year, there is abudget of R900 000 to deal with theplans of structuring street trading.This amount does not include theappointment of street marshals.

According to the time frames,functions and duties of variousbusiness units in dealing with street

trading, the human resources unithas until next year June to appointstreet marshals.

“Some of the people have beentrading illegally for quite some time,and so we will try and demarcatesome of the sites to accommodatethose who are trading illegally in thestreets. We cannot accommodate ev-erybody on the streets, otherwisethere will be anarchy. Some of thesepeople evencome fromas farasMooiRiver and Greytown and they are notresidents in our city. We even haveillegal immigrants who are on thestreets.

“We need to beef up our enforce-ment to make sure that they havepermits to be in the country and theymight be trading illegally on ourstreets,” said Zimu.

Mpac member and ward council-lor Siphiwe Ndawonde asked Zimuwhat power the street marshals willpossess.“Will theyhavepowerstoar-rest?” he asked.

Mpac chairperson Mike Tarr saidthat for most of the people who aretradinginthestreets,thelittletheygetis their only source of income.

“Butwe can’t let it get out of hand.It isaproblemanditwillnotgoaway.”

FORMER Howick mayor Keith PatersonHumphries (81) died peacefully lastweek Tuesday.

Humphries was born in 1933 to fourthgeneration residents of Howick. One of thefounders of Wessa Umngeni Valley NatureReserve and a farmer on the family farm inHowick,Humphrieshadaloveforthelandandthe community.

He served on theHowick TownCouncil for16yearsandasHowickmayorforthreeyears.

Hewas the chartermember of the HowickLions club and was active in the group for 40years.

In2014HumphrieswaspresentedwiththeLouis Halse award for his tireless dedicationto the community and the Howick-UmngeniLions Club.

He is survived by hiswife of 59 years, JuneEngelbrecht, his two children and fourgrandchildren.

Humphries’s daughterAlisonEngelbrechtsaid he led a long and happy life and gave hisall to the community.

WATER pipes were stolen from justbehind the Pietermaritzburg Airportin Oribi recently.

The manager for economic devel-opment at Msunduzi Municipality,David Gengan, said that pipes were

stolenduring theprocessof replacingpipes behind the airport.

He said that council is investigat-ing the matter.

“This is [part of] an infrastructureproject thatwas runby thewater andsanitation unit who were replacingstorm water pipes at the back of theairport.

“The officials concerned areaware of the problem and they areaddressing the matter and they saidthey will be removing all of thosepipes that are still located there,”GengantoldtheExecutiveCommittee(Exco).

Thevalueof thepipes isunknown.Meanwhile, the deputy municipal

managerfordevelopmentservicesDrRay Ngcobo said that they arecurrently working on a precinct planfor the airport.

“The current space has gotconflicting landuses,suchasaviationand human settlements. That wholearea needs to be properly planned,”said Ngcobo.

He said that the precinct plan willearmark space for new hangers.

“Whenweplan,therewillbespacethat will be earmarked for hangers.The draft plan for the airport masterplan has been airport master hasbeen formulated,” said Ngcobo.

THE South African National BloodService (SANBS) celebrated their60th birthday as well as themilestonesofseveraldonorsrecently.

Donors, along with family andfriends,gatheredat theGoldenHorseCasino for a night of celebration.

SANBS national chairperson AlexChristianscalledforpeopletokeepondonating.

“We are entering the silly seasonwhere therearea lot of accidents andemergency surgeries, andwe appealfor donors, mainly with O negativebloodas it is auniversalmatch tooth-er blood types.”

According to Christians, thePietermaritzburg branch has a 2,7daystockofblood,andare lookingforvolunteers and donors alike to helpraise the stock to at least five days.

National Health LaboratoryService and SANBS provincial co-or-dinatorNonhleMbamboalso attend-ed the celebration and said the eventwas one of the greatest milestones inSANBS history.

“Without these people, wewouldn’t be saving lives. One unit ofbloodsavesthreelivesandforbabies,it’s more.

“To donate blood is to be a selflessambassador,becauseyoudon’tknowwhen you or your family will needblood,” said Mbambo.

Alsoattendingthecelebrationwas666-time donor Raymond du Toit.The 73-year-old donor said he hadbeen given a special medical clear-ance to donate and had already beenclearedtodonatein2015.DuToitsaidhefirstdonatedbloodat theageof14,whenanill frienddesperatelyneededa blood transfusion.

Named the Hayfields Vampire bythe SANBS community, Du Toit saidhe was at the event to support thecause.

THE KZN Winter Air Tour hasmanaged to generate R32,8million since its inception in

2012.This comes amid the KZNDepart-

ment of Treasury’s announcementthat it would like to host 30 more airshows within the next three years.

Treasury’s generalmanager, CliveCoetzee, told the Msunduzi Munici-pality’s Executive Committee (Exco)that this will happen once all nitty-gritties have been resolved.

“We run our air shows extremelyefficiently and effectively because of

ourplanning.Wespendalotofmoneyon disaster management, planningand security,” said Coetzee.

TheKZNairshows,calledtheKZNWinter Air Tour, have been success-fully held in the province and have

attractedthousandsofspectatorsandinternational media coverage.

Hesaidthattheairshowshadbeenstrategically located at variousregions for more exposure.

Between 2012 and 2014, there

have been 22 air shows which hadbeen staged. Coetzee said that thenumber of spectators per event wasaround 10 000.

From 2012 to 2014, the KZNWinter Air Tour has managed to

generate R32,8 million, the total val-ue of media coverage was R21-mil-lion and the air shows received 16hours of local and national televisioncoverage. The total flying hours fortheairshowsfrom2012to2014havebeen 132.

“Thestatistics speakmoreofwhatwe have achieved over the last threeyears. Our motto has been ‘takingaviation to the people’.

“Durban usually hosts a bulkof events so with the KZN WinterAir Tour, we wanted to host theair shows in different regions.

“Internationally there is abig aviation audience,” saidCoetzee.

THE seriousness of the MsunduziMunicipality’s debt situation cannot beoveremphasised. At end of August, theoutstanding amount owed to Msunduzi

stood at R1,816 billion.Over the period June to August, the debt

increased by an alarming R238,2 million. Atthis rate, the debt will soon be over R2 billion.Msunduzi cannot afford to carry thisincreasing debt.Who owes the money?>> Government: R167 346 843 (9,2%)>> Residential: R1 007 792 246 (55,5%)>> Business: R473 977 841 (26,1%)>> Other: R139 093 562 (7,7%)

It is of concern that of the total, someR1,193 billion stands at 120 days plus. Themajority of this older debt can be viewed asdoubtful debt and will likely have to bewritten off. This is money that should beavailable for infrastructure upgrading,maintenance, housing and other needs.

Msunduzi must show greater determina-tion and urgency in collecting the money

owed. A good starting point will be withgovernment departments whose debt isviewed as “good” debt. Why are they notpaying? Business debt is also at unaccepta-ble levels. We await a list of the 20 business-es that owe the largest amounts. It is alsoincumbent on individual ratepayers to paytheir rates and utility accounts on time.

Specsavers partnered with Netcare St Annes hospitalduring October, which is World Sight Month, to conduct

free vision screenings and counselling for the public andstaff. Health information was also made available about

KZN 2010 Idol SA runner-up Lloyd Cele will beperforming at the Winston Churchill Theatretomorrow, entertaining fans with songs from his new

album ‘Grey Matter’.According to his manager Dominic Neil, part of Cele’s

tour in the province in which he was born is to celebratethe release of his third album. With his third child on theway, this marks an exciting period in his life in which he fur-ther seeks to cement top spot on the charts and unite thepeople of South Africa through music.

“He encourages all people to reach for their dreamsand never give up. All things are truly possible and with GreyMatter, it could very well by three time’s a charm.Lloyd is out to prove that good things happen in threes,”said Neil.

The avid music lover turned Idols runner-up, then SAMAwinner, Walela award, Channel O Award and Metro awardnominee, is looking to build on the success of his first single“Tonight” that features as the theme song for Top Billing.

Grey Matter was released on 22 September.“Lloyd has worked with a number of SA’s top artists,

including Cassper Nyovest, the Soweto Gospel Choir andBrian Temba. He wanted to bring a diverse mix of influencesto his third album, much like he has done on his two previousalbums One and No Limits,” said Neil.

Some of Cele’s well known songs are “NgiyakudingaMtakwethu” (All I Need Is You), a Zulu song featuring BrianTemba, the Afrikaans single “Dans Met My” and Englishsingle “Made for Love”. These songs have all been unleashedonto the airwaves at the same time and have beenplaylisted on the top radio stations for those genres.

A DOCTOR who treated Michael Schumacherfor nearly six months after the Formula 1champion struckhis head in a skiing fall says

the injured ex-driver is no longer in a coma andpredicted a possible recovery within three years.

Jean-Francois Payen, a doctor at the Grenoblehospital that treated Schumacher after his injury inDecember2013,saidhehasvisitedtheSchumacherfamily at home in Switzerland to track his patient’sprogress.

Schumacher was with his 14-year-old son in theFrenchAlpswhenhe fell, hitting the sideof his headon a rock and cracking his helmet.

“Life after a head injury is punctuated by stages.We hope, but we have to give him time,” said Payenlast Thursday.

He predicted a convalescence of one to threeyears.

Earlier French F1 commentator Jean-LouisMoncet repeated a report that Schumacher was“waking up very slowly” from the induced comacontrolling his serious brain injuries.

Moncetsaid:“IsawhissonandhetoldmeSchumiwas waking up very slowly, very slowly.”

Payen commented: “It is to see how heprogresses and then tell his wife and his childrenwhat changes I have observed. He is in veryfavourable conditions.”

In September 2014 Schumacher left arehabilitation clinic in Switzerland and returnedhome to his estate on the edge of Lake Geneva.

Previously, the men ran in red for the

DaREDevil Run, however the More BallsThan Most, brother organization to thePinkDrive, has been given the opportunityto take over this race and paint it blue.

With help from Bidvest, the racehas been renamed to BALLduhDash, a4km run, walk or stroll in support oftesticular and prostate cancer awareness,driving the message that early detectionsaves lives.

“This one is for the boys. We aim to hostdads, sons, uncles, brothers and friends fora fun day with a dash of running”, saidTrisch Rosema, representative at MoreBalls than Most.

The race will take place on 7 Novemberat 4.30pm, with the start and finish linebeing at Maritzburg College.

Entrance fee is R100 and can be madethrough the Community Chest. Theentrance fee includes one pair of blueboxers which can be collected from theChest offices.

All proceeds made from this event willbe handed over by the Community Chestto More Balls Than Most.
