When 25-stone child-minder,Karsten Kaltoft was dismissedby his employers, the

Municipality of Billund in Denmark, forbeing unable to tie the laces of thechildren he cared for without acolleague’s help, few could havepredicted the likely consequences for UKemployers. Solicitor Abigail Halcarz ofcommercial law firm SGH Martineauexplains: “When his employment wasterminated after 15 years of service, MrKaltoft was considered severely obese, with a BMI of 54 (according to the WorldHealth Organisation, any individual witha BMI in excess of 40 is severely ormorbidly obese). Mr Kaltoft claimed hisdismissal was because he was obese, which meant the Court of Justice of theEuropean Union (ECJ) ultimately had toconsider whether a general prohibitionexists in EU law on all forms ofdiscrimination, including obesity, orwhether obesity should be classified as adisability within the scope of the EqualTreatment Framework Directive.

“The ECJ held that while there isgenerally no law prohibitingdiscrimination on the grounds ofobesity, there are certain circumstanceswhen it could amount to a disability.National courts will now decide

whether an individual’s obesityconstitutes a disability.

“Obesity in itself is insufficient to be adisability, but could potentially satisfy thedefinition of disability under the EqualityAct 2010, if the condition is severeenough. If severely obese employeessuffer problems with mobility, enduranceand mood, it could amount to disabilityand affect how employers manage theirworkforce.

“Circumstances under which anobese employee may be considered asdisabled, include; someone with type 2diabetes who is regularly absent as aresult of the condition; someone whosuffers from depression as a result of theirweight; or someone whose obesitycauses severe mobility issues (e.g. uses awheelchair and finds it difficult to usepublic transport).

“The duties under the Equality Act2010 in respect of people who areclassed as ‘disabled’ will apply not only todisabled employees, but job applicantstoo. As such it is unlawful for anemployer to discriminate against anindividual; treat an individualunfavourably because of somethingarising from disability, without objectivejustification; discriminate indirectly byapplying a provision, criterion or practice

that disadvantages any individual with adisability, without objective justification;fail to comply with its duty to makereasonable adjustments where a disabledindividual is placed at a substantialdisadvantage; subject an individual toharassment related to disability; victimisean individual because they have made orintend to make a disability discriminationcomplaint; or ask job applicants pre-employment health questions other thanfor a prescribed reason. The prescribedreasons are set out in the legislation.

“If nothing else, this casedemonstrates the need for employers toregularly review their equal opportunitiesand sickness absence policies, ensuringthey cover all disability discriminationissues, including obesity. I wouldrecommend employers also reviewtraining for managers dealing withsickness absence and issues that mightarise from obesity, to ensure theyunderstand the current legal position andhow it now applies in the workplace.

“If an employer dismisses anemployee because of any physicalattribute, then the chances are it is unfairand potentially discriminatory, unless itaffects the individual’s ability to do theirjob and no reasonable adjustments canbe made to improve the situation.”

Abigail Halcarz explainsthe consequences of the

EU’s recent ruling onobesity and why all

employers need to takecare when dismissing

those who can no longerperform their jobs

because of it.

Everyone wants to save money, cutcosts, ease the burden on cashflowand use time wisely but not

everyone knows the secret. Not thatit’s really a secret any more - at leastnot to many of the UK’s biggest andbest-known furniture manufacturingcompanies. Shrewd and establishedmanufacturers from the kitchen, officeand upholstery sectors have known fora good many years that by entrustingLeeds-based SPL Components Ltd(formerly known as SycamoreProducts) with the time-consumingbusiness of sourcing everything frombrackets and hinges to screws anddrawer boxes - like the job of ensuringjust the right number of components ispackaged for the end user - they cansave time, save money and make life agood deal easier for themselves. And

because SPL also maintains stocks forthem and supplies on an “as required”basis, their cashflow benefits, too.

“Nowadays, people don’t want to bebuying 20 items from half a dozensuppliers,” explains SPL’s ManagingDirector, Gary Baxter, whose experienceof sourcing and packaging componentsfor manufacturers dates back to theearly nineties. “It takes time to sourceeverything you need from a bracket to apiece of glass. That’s what we do - andwe can supply and package anythingthat goes into a cabinet except thechipboard.”

Fifteen years ago, customer demanddrove the company into sourcing screwsand providing a packaging service. “Wehad 30 out-workers,” recalls Gary. Butwith rising demand it wasn’t long beforethe company acquired its first packaging

Leeds-based SPL Components Ltd has grown outof its single height 9,000 square foot warehouseinto new 22,500 square foot highline premises bygiving larger manufacturers exactly what theyneed when they need it.

machine. “To begin with, we weresupplying the kitchen manufacturingsector. When the recession hit, webegan to approach the office sector andmore recently we’ve started sourcingbespoke products for larger upholsterymanufacturers.”

With rising demand, Gary and histeam decided to invest. First came amove from the company’s original low-build premises of 9,000 square feet to ahigh line warehouse of 12,500 squarefeet. Just six months later, SPL hadoutgrown its new premises and theadjoining 10,000 square foot warehousewas acquired. Most recently, a new andhighly advanced packaging machine(capable of collating and packing up to20 individual, automatically countedcomponents into a sealed plastic bag)has added a further £300,000 ofinvestment to the business - and thenew machine is already busy.

“Business has grown by 45% in thelast year,” says Gary. “We’ve grownthrough diversification and have a newcatalogue coming out shortly whichincludes handles, drawers, aluminiumextrusions - anything that goes into akitchen. It contains about 80% of whatwe do. We also source a lot of bespokeproduct from curved glass to bracketry, casters, specialised feet - basicallyanything our customers need. If one ofour customers needs a special bracket,we’ll have it made by one of oursuppliers, stock it for them and supply itin the boxed quantities they want. It

makes life easier for them - and theybenefit from the economies of scale weare able to offer through our bulkbuying programme.”

Gary admits candidly that SPL is not astrictly a developer of products, thoughit has sourced many exclusive productsmade for customers who have veryspecific requirements. The companyoccupies a very clearly defined position:it’s an importer and a distributor. “Tellus what you want and we’ll provide it,”he says. “We’ll find the products for you,we’ll package them with your companyname or the name of your customer, abarcode, or whatever is required andwe’ll deliver them to your schedule. We’re sourcing continually,” he adds,“Which means what may not have beencompetitive last year could be this.”

Eighty-five per cent of the productssourced by SPL are imported, most invast quantities, so worthwhile cost-savings can be passed to you. SPL hasalready proved to big name kitchenmanufacturers that it offers tangibleadvantages. Now, with warehousespace to spare and the right contacts inplace to expand its horizons evenfurther, the SPL team has set its sightson proving to the larger office andupholstery manufacturers that it candeliver on its promise to them as well.

With tactile qualities so high onthe consumer agenda - andin particular, natural-feeling,

soft-touch surfaces - it will come as nosurprise to learn that the style andtechnical gurus at Bonlex (the décorspecialist from the giant C I KaseiGroup) are right up there at thecutting edge of the trend with a rangethat includes six beautiful new satins. The softly-embossed range of satinunicolours includes White, Cream,Light Grey, Cashmere, Mussel and asophisticated Black Satin - all shown inthe main background image. All sixdécors are either 0.3mm or 0.35mmPVC and all are now available throughPlasfilms from stock.

When producing satin materials,Bonlex uses the same gloss base as withits gloss foils but then adds a satin topcoat. This enhances the colour depth inthe product whilst providing high levelsof scratch and chemical resistance.

Catering for the burgeoning highgloss market, Bonlex recently launchedfour new high gloss neutrals. LikeBonlex satins, the gloss décors start ashigh gloss products. The addition of atop coat increases the depth as well asproviding scratch and chemicalresistancy to very high levels. Colourconsistency is also exceptionally good.Shown top right are Cashmere, Mussel,Dakar and Congo - just part of a muchmore expansive range that nowincludes no fewer than seven Greys, some of which incorporate subtle hintsof blue. Shown bottom right are StoneGrey High Gloss, Light Grey High Glossand Otranto Grey High Gloss. FlintGrey, Dark Grey, Jupiter Grey andLucido Grey are also available. These aresupplemented by two co-ordinatingLarch print designs, Snow Larch andBerlino Larch, also shown right.

With its pioneerspirit and powerful

expression, thefurniture film skai® Nelson

is an expressive interpretation of elm.As decisively as Nelson once circled the globe, theplanked design demonstrates its unique structure:With a white-grey negative pore, its colours rangefrom gold-bronze with hints of brown to white-grey.

The skai® colore magic structurewith Quadro embossing has many

characteristics of coniferous wood andcan therefore be perfectly combined with

skai® Nelson and skai® Ida. The new metallictones are right on the ball. Due to their particularly

deep structure, which is similar to a sandblasted surfacewith sharp edges and grooves, and unique colour, theseplain colours look particularly impressive.

Plain colour furniture films give an impression of finesseand high-quality, especially with the amazingly natural oak

embossing Legno. The pores modulate and move, sometimesappearing deep, sometimes shallow. This new embossing looks

like a solid oak front with multiple layers of varnish and isavailable in seven colours in the skai® colore structure collection.

Not a single tree has to be felled to obtain furniture with an authenticwood appearance,” says Klaus Müller, Schattdecor’s Foil SalesManager, referring to the décor specialist’s new Smartfoil EVO. The

EBC-lacquered décor set new standards for look and feel in the foil sector when itmade its debut at Sicam last October. ”The look is very attractive and hard todistinguish from veneer,” continues Klaus. “We have significantly improvedphysico-chemical surface resistances. Smartfoil EVO offers a marked improvementin mechanical properties as well as optimised fluid resistance.”

Produced on a 2750mm wide line code-named PMD 42 in Schattdecor’sPolish plant in Tarnowo Podgórne, Smartfoil EVO’s unique properties are theresult of printing and applying two coats of lacquer in an inline process whichcreates a texture that synchronises perfectly with the printed pattern. Pore

structures are further enhanced with gloss levels that vary from matt to high gloss. After a phase that favoured rustic textures, trends are moving in the direction

of subtlety, finesse and authenticity. Sonoma Oak embraces robust visual effects, whereas the new Livorno Beech décor that saw its debut at Sicam stands for anew generation of subtle woodgrain décors characterised by understated andnatural details. Columbia Walnut, a dark woodgrain (pictured with Klaus Müller),is the décor Schattdecor has chosen to usher in its Smartfoil EVO product.

Schattdecor is able to produce Smartfoil EVO in gloss levels ranging fromsuper matt to high gloss and is now concentrating its efforts on ultra-matt

and electron beam-cured gloss/matt combinations with “anti-fingerprint”characteristics. To find out more about Smartfoil EVO visit Schattdecor’swebsite at www.schattdecor.de

EVO, first seen at Sicam

mmoovveess

The story of Smartfoil EVO’s development dates back to 2009, whenSchattdecor started aligning its development efforts to marketdemands for foil solutions offering high quality surface finishes.Schattdecor’s technologists wanted to create a texture whichsynchronised with the print pattern and gloss/matt effects. This led to abreak with the past approach and consideration of a combination unit, with electron beam technology ultimately proving to be the route. InJune 2010 an investment decision was made, resulting in theinstallation of the PMD 42 inline printing and topcoating line inPoland. The unit entered operation in stages, starting with the printingelement in 2012. The electron beam (EB) component was installed inmid-2013 and work was stepped up on determining specific lacquerparameters. From the very start the technology was designed with theconception of a foil with the characteristics of the later Smartfoil EVO inmind. The end result may be seen in Columbia Walnut, the first décorto be produced in this new surface effect foil. The PMD 42 has anannual capacity of over 50 million square metres, ensuring plentifulsupply for Schattdecor clients.

The new foil can be processed like any other Schattdecor foil andlends itself to Completeline technology where surfaces and edges areprocessed in a single operation.

Following the successful introductionof Egger’s ST27, the line at theHexham factory has started

production of the latest generationST28 synchronised pore décor.Advanced surface technology whichaligns the print with the texture tocreate a registered finish accentuatesthe knots and planking in designs likeGladstone Oak to impart a natural feelreminiscent of solid wood.

Three finishes are available: H3309ST28 Sand Gladstone Oak, H3326Grey-Beige Gladstone Oak and H3325ST28 Tobacco Gladstone Oak. As wellas being available from stock in 18mmdouble-sided board, all are nowavailable with the ST15 décor on thereverse. ST28 supplements the earlierintroduction of Egger’s ST27 décor, which is available in two woodgrains,H1796 ST27 Natural Tortona andH1793 ST27 Lava Tortona. Thesesynchronised décors are in addition to

ST29, which is currently produced atEgger’s sister plants and stocked in theUK as 18mm double-sided board.

“The trend towards ultra-realisticrustic wood-grains that has been soevident in recent years - particularly inpremium German and Italian kitchens -shows no sign of going away any timesoon,” commented Egger UK’s head ofdécor development, Elliott Fairlie. “Thisauthentic design, with its double paperlayer and highly realistic gloss levels, creates a depth and realism previouslyonly available with a veneer or solidtimber.

“The decision to invest in additionalproduction capability for this range inthe UK, means our customers canexpect shorter lead times, moreflexibility on sizes and smaller minimumorder quantities.”

Now in its 11th year, the SurfaceDesign Show took place in theLondon Business Design Centre

from 10th to 12th February. Over 130exhibitors showcased products.Although essentially a show targettedat architects, designers and specifiers, the Surface Design Show provides aspotlight for new and novel surfacesfrom bold, architectural statements tothe latest sustainable designs. Whilst itis no Interzum - neither in size nor inthe spread of product on show - thereare usually a few surprises to be foundwhich deserve attention from thefurniture manufacturing sector.

The advent of chunky furnituredesigns has seen increased demand forlightweight panels. 3A Composites

showed its latest, an aluminium-faced,polyurethane board that weighs just1.9kg per square metre.

On the decorative side, productsranged from the immensely practicalHi-Macs solid surfacing material on theLatham stand and a range of décorsfrom the Portuguese company Finsa,to solid Spruce that had been printedto look like oak and panels withprinted woodworm from Sun-Wood.Among the more unusual décors wereFrench-made Pure Paper and PureMetal HPLs from Blackheath, a rangeof veneers from Mundy whichincluded a very tactile Silver Birch(above) and a light-transmitting man-made veneer from Anglo Eden Frenchcalled Radiant. More details follow...

Small, compact and

easily covered in half a

day, the Surface Design

Show is no competitor

for the décor halls of

Interzum but there are

usually a few gems to

be found.

Distributed in the UK by Decolan, Sun-Woodproducts are being offered in two formats: as panelproducts, which are produced in three veneer layers

which are subsequently printed to give the appearance ofan old, distressed timber; and as solid wood panels, manufactured by over-printing solid Spruce with adistressed and patinated oak design.

Sun-Wood, which has been working in this field forsome five years, offers a full range of veneers but used theSurface Design Show to highlight its triple-layered printeddécors, one of which was presented as a distressed pineand the other, as a worm-holed and well-worn timberwith a very tactile surface (see background image).

Finsa has had a busy year, firstshowing at the Architect@Workshow in January, then taking stand

space at the Surface Design Show withstands on a theme of Finsa’s Passportto the latest trends in décors.

“We are showing five main productgroups,” commented Eduardo Capelfrom the Surface Design Show stand.“Fibraplast Lucent is our melamine-faced MDF. We call it Lucent becauseof the high gloss coating. Lucent isavailable as a range of 15 décors, including woodgrains, and the qualityof the gloss means it is ideal for topend kitchens and bedrooms.” Thebreakthrough technology claims tohave incorporated into its manufactureprovides a high gloss surface which is

scratch and UV resistant, while thequality of the MDF makes for easymachining.

The second product Finsa showedwas SuperPan, an “industrial strength”décor with an in-register embossedmelamine oak surface called Jazz - thethird product. “We are showing fourshades of oak in Jazz,” commentedEduardo. “Jazz is available only onSuperPan board, not chipboard orMDF, because the properties of Jazzwork best with a really high gradesubstrate.” SuperPan combines thecost benefits of chipboard with thesmoothness of MDF by facing achipboard panel with MDF on bothsides before the decorative film isapplied.

The fourth, and perhaps most unusualproduct, was Finsa’s black-dyed MDF,Fibracolour. Perhaps more squarely aimedat the shopfitting market, Fibracolour, shown left, requires no finishing, though itcan be lacquered and processed like anyother MDF.

With a density of around 1,000kg percubic metre, the fifth product to be shown aspart of the Finsa Forest display wasCompacmel, a high density woodenfibreboard which offers high bendingstrength, high impact resistance andelasticity. “It is perfect for high humidityenvironments,” added Eduardo.

The trend towards chunky design,heavy-looking, solid-lookingfurniture designs has spawned a

whole new generation of lightweightpanels and associated fixings to dealwith internal honeycomb structuresand low-hold foamed panel interiors. With the latest contender from 3AComposites, it’s now possible to buy a15mm panel that can be cut like anyother with a centre of polyurethanethat, according to 3A Composites’sales team leader in the UK, SimonPhilpott, doesn’t demand the use ofspecial fixings.

Based in Germany, 3A CompositesGmbH injects polyurethane betweentwo aluminium skins on a throughfeedline to create a product which is called

Kappatec. Once the polyurethane hashardened, the roll is cut into panels.“Kappatec weighs just 1.9 kilos persquare metre compared with thetypical weight of 7-8 kilos for MDF,”says Simon. “No formaldehyde is usedin the manufacturing process and nopreparation of the product is necessarybefore laminating with a décorproduct because the aluminiumexterior is finished with a stoveenamel, making it ultra smooth.

“We have UK stocks of 1250 x2500mm as well as 1250 x 3050mmand a 1400mm width will be availablefrom March. We can supply either bulkpacked or boxed, as required.”

HI-MACS® made a big impact at this year’s Surface Design Show.

The exclusive UK distributor, James Latham, featured the popular

acrylic solid surface material on their stand.

HI-MACS® featured extensivelyon the stand with a series ofpanels highlighting the

versatility of the product. The materialcan be thermoformed as well asrouted and machined to almost any3D shape, offering virtually unlimitedpossibilities for personalised designs.

Examples included a panel in 6mmthick Alpine White HI-MACS® whichhad been thermoformed over pebblesand two vibrantly coloured panelswhich had been milled on the reverseof the sheet, pre-heated in athermoforming oven to 170 degreesCelsius and then vacuum-formed toproduce a seamless pattern on the faceof the panels.

Certain HI-MACS® colours and

thicknesses exhibit translucency whenexposed to light and various texturesand patterns can be built into thematerial to intensify the translucentappearance. Cut-out effects can addvisual interest with a new sense ofspace. There is a wide choice ofcolours on offer, with almost 100 inthe portfolio, supplied in thicknesses of6, 9 and 12mm.

LG Hausys, the manufacturers of HI-MACS®, have developed BIM Objects, which carry much more informationand are replacing CAD symbols, for itsfull range of HI-MACS® shapes andcolours for the following software:Sketchup, ArchiCAD and Revit.

We all understand the need forit, we all offer it, we all relyon it, some hype it beyond

belief and have no clue how to deliverit but to Oadby-based TM Services, service was where everything started.

Back in 1984 when Tony Morrisfounded his fledgling company, his soleaim was to provide repair, maintenanceand installation facilities to users ofclassical woodworking machinery, edgebanders, rip saws, panel saws andsanders. As the reputation of TMServices grew, Tony’s workloadincreased and so did his workforce ofskilled service engineers. Matt Pearce,Tony’s right-hand man, takes up thestory: “I started when there was justTony and three others,” he says. “That

was 17 years ago. Last year we took onour eleventh engineer and we’vestarted training our own apprentices. Our focus is and always has been onservicing and installing machines.Machinery sales are secondary for us.They grew out of service.

“We were doing all the servicingand installation for Striebig, the Swissvertical panel saw manufacturer. Whenwe were offered the agency in 1997, itseemed a logical development for thebusiness and we decided to take it on.

”We started supplying AL-KO dustextraction with the Striebig saws weinstalled - they are very good quality, quiet, compact and reliable. We havebeen working with AL-KO for 15 yearsnow as their UK agent.

When Tony Morris established

TM Services, service was the

only thing he offered. Machine

sales came later - but the

priority has never changed.

There is no substitute for highly-trained engineers who knowmachines inside out. TM Services has 11 engineers on theroad, five back office support staff and apprentices workingfrom its premises in Oadby.

“Our other area of expertise waswide belt sanders. We started withJohanssen and eventually took onSandingmaster. We were the agents forSandingmaster until they started tofocus primarily on development for themetal grinding and polishing industryand for the far Eastern market, but westill service and maintainSandingmasters for UK customers. Then we were presented with anopportunity to work with Biesse whenthey bought Viet two years ago. Viet isvery focussed, like Striebig, and thequality of the machines is very high.Striebig, Alko and Viet are our offer. That’s not to say we wouldn’t takeother agencies if the machine was ofthe right quality and we had goodaccess to parts but we still see ourselvespredominantly as a service company. It’s what we do best. The service side ofour business has grown consistentlyand organically.”

As the service side continues togrow, TM has been busily upscaling

the support available through its backoffice. Five back office staff (plusapprentices) now support TM’s 11engineers - and with the increase inbusiness has come investment incomprehensive spares back up as wellas IT systems that enable instantaccess to customers’ service records.“The IT system provides instant accessto all the machines our customershave and an instant overview of thestatus of their service programmes, enabling us to provide appropriatepreventative, scheduled maintenanceas well as a complete history of eachmachine.”

Service first may sound like justanother cliché in an industry wheresome see after-sales service more as aselling tool than essential support but atTM it’s not. TM started out with service, has consistently prioritised thedevelopment of its support functionover machinery sales and has grown itscustomer base because of that. SCM’s entry level beam saw nowopens up new prospects for allpotential customers entering the

beam saw market for panel breakdownand sizing of panels.

The independent raising of both themain saw blade and the scoring sawblade is now available on the SCMSigma Prima beam saw range, thusincreasing the potential of using thesaw and making possible moremachining facilities.

The main saw blade and scoring sawblade carriage, with independentraising on linear guides andrecirculating ball screws, is essential forthe execution of post-formed panelsizing (40mm max. height), slots andgrooves with 35mm max. height.

The optimised height adjustment ofthe main blade projection on twolevels, permits the setting of the lower

blade height in order to limit the bladewear and assure a better finishingquality. Time optimisation andreduction of costs for tool maintenanceare additional benefits.

Finishing accuracy is also assuredwhen machining materials other thanwood. Moreover, a device for bladelubrication is now available whichallows the use of the machine for sizingof materials other than wood, byreducing friction during machiningand thus improving cutting andfinishing quality.

SCM’s most advanced saw carriagetechnology is now available with thisnew application, to meet every workingrequirement with a reduced investmentin an SCM Sigma Prima Beam Saw.

inside story

The Vector Revolution 180 turns contouredgebanding on its head. Employing anew concept based on the patented

Vector principle, the Vector Revolution 180operates in much the same way as a typicalthroughfeed edgebander - at peak efficiencybut around almost any contour.

The structure of the machine is extremelystable, providing a full field width of 1830mm(72”) in the Y direction. It fits easily withexisting technologies such as nested-basedmanufacturing, where shaped componentscan be efficiently machined from large sheetsat high speed and subsequently processed onthe Vector. The unique combination of thepatented Vector operating system, flat bedand pendulum loading capability means thatshort runs and fast changeover of productshapes and sizes is simple and quick.

Further simplifying changeover, a newPanel Projection system is now available whichprojects the outline of the workpiece onto thebed of the machine. This is a huge help inshort run production environments with con-stantly changing panel shapes because theshape of the panel is projected onto the bed, making pod alignment simple. It also facili-tates positioning the panel on the pods, guar-anteeing correct overhang of the podswithout the need for the operator to check.

The Vector incorporates several uniquefeatures (detailed right) which furtherenhance its performance. Most notable is theSideWinder trimmer unit. This clever device, which is mounted on the work unit, allowsgluing, edging, trimming and glue jointscraping all to be finish processed in one passaround the panel. Top and bottom tracershoes and a horizontal shoe control the radiuscutter heads, dramatically reducing pro-cessing times. The Vector Revolution 180 isfast, efficient - and fully supported with partsand service in the UK by RW Machines.

VECTOR

Left. Changingfrom one tapesize to anotheris extremelysimple: makea positiveadjustmentto the glue

Left. A surface scraper is incorporated intothe trimmer unit. This unit operates using

the patented SideWinder system and isperformed simultaneously with all otherunits. The unique design of the surfacescraper means it easily handles panelswhich are not sitting perfectly flatdue to bowing or swelling, withoutdamaging the panel edge. It never-theless maintains a perfectly smoothtransition between the panel surfaceand the edge material.

Above. The Vector Revolution 180 uses a cartridgeand nozzle glue extrusion system which is ideally

suited to the contour banding application. The cartridgeglue nozzle is a closed system which only heats theglue as it is used. From the heated face of thecartridge until it is extruded onto the banding, the glue is not exposed to the atmosphere,so there is no burning or discolouration.

The original colour and propertiesof the glue are maintained. A

further benefit of the glue nozzlesystem is its close proximity tothe first pressure roller, whichmeans even when slowing for

corners, the glue remains moltenuntil pressed onto the panel by

the first pressure roller. This is particularly important when

banding tight radiuses because atreduced feed speed the glue does not

have an opportunity to chill beforebeing pressed onto the panel.

Left. The jointof the edge where a com-plete 360 degree edging is required iscontrolled by a sensor arm. The speed of approachis automatically reduced at a precise distance from the joint and a sensor accurately detects the beginning of the edge

which remained untrimmed at the cycle start. The trim cutter thencuts the edge with a bevel, the edge is applied and the top/bottom

trimmed leaving a joint of the highest quality.

Right. Another innovation of the Revolution 180is the edge feed mechanism which is mounted

above the aggregate and coils around asimple winder mechanism. The edge is

continuously fed and remains ready forthe next workpiece as soon as the

end cutter has cut the end of theprevious piece. There is no need

for expensive and complex edgefeeding units to pre-cut lengths

for each workpiece.

Below right. Workpieces are supported by means of vacuumcups sitting on a large flat bed which enable absolute flexi-

bility in positioning pods to ensure the workpiece is heldsecurely. Because there is no routing function on the

Vector Revolution 180 the vacuum pods do not getdamaged, and hence full vacuum is achieved with

a 100m3/hr oil vane quiet operating vacuumpump. Power usage is minimal. Exact work-piece positioning is not critical, as thepatented operating system is unaffected bypanel position. A combination of standard

and lifting pods aresupplied. Extras

structure of the VectorRevolution 180 is fabricated

from heavy plate steel and boxsection. It is extremely rigid andprovides a wide, stable support

Once Dustraction has developed a specification which meets theneeds of the factory and the client is happy, everything is enteredinto a CAD system in preparation for manufacturing on site inOadby, Leicestershire. Manufacturing drawings are downloadedfirst to a CNC plasma cutter (below left) which cuts everycomponent, making holes where necessary for bolts or flanges. The components are then folded or rolled (below right) andassembled (top left). Dustraction manufactures all the supportsteelwork to ensure high quality welds and reliable construction itcan guarantee with confidence. Most is sent out for galvanising.Filter units are painted in the company’s spraybooth (top right).

Dustraction’s fan sets use the reliable construction of paddleblades with a typically British engineering twist to make them runquieter: borrowing technology from the trailing edge of an owl’swing, the impellers (left) are modified to omit troublesomevortices and cut peak frequencies. Ruggedness is retained whilethe painful effect of dominant frequencies is reduced - typicallyfrom 95dB to around 83dB. These are ideal for applications wherewoodwaste is blown directly into the filter.

You might think that sounds a bitclichéd but Dustraction really is acompany with its roots in the foundryindustry - and everyone that worksthere is an engineer to the core. Quiteliterally, everything that leaves thefactory in Leicestershire has beendesigned, cut from sheet metal, shaped, rolled, welded and assembledby the Dustraction team under oneroof. Having absolute control over

quality and production at all timesmeans Dustraction can guarantee boththe bag life and the emissions of all theextraction systems it installs - andwhen the time comes for you toupgrade or move a system, the ruggedengineering that’s built into everycomponent means disassembling andreassembling can be carried out withconfidence.

But perhaps even more British thanthe traditional engineering skills itemploys is Dustraction’s approach toproblem solving: “We like interestingprojects,” says MD, Steve Matuska. “Wesolve problems. We never admitdefeat.” You can almost hear Churchill’sbulldog spirit in his voice as he reels off

Traditional engineering,

chemistry, acoustics,

ornithology - they’ve all

played a part in the

inventions which have

given Dustraction a place

in a uniquely British

engineering heritage.

a string of inventions the team has comeup with to solve knotty issue after knottyissue: the introduction of speciallyformulated sacrificial dust to preventfilters from clogging at a plastics plant;the incorporation of acoustic dampingmaterials and baffles to cut noise levelsat a factory in a residential area; even thedevelopment of specially designed fanblades which prevent the overtonesassociated with a particular material as itstrikes the blades. Chemistry, acoustics, aerodynamics, even ornithology, have allplayed a part in the way Dustraction hassolved specific issues for clients.

Yes, you read correctly: ornithology. The study of birds - or, more correctly

(in the case of Dustraction’s quiet-running paddle blades), the study of owlwings - led to one of Dustraction’s most

significant and beneficial developments:“The feathers at the trailing edge of anowl’s wing are different to those of mostbirds,” says Steve Matuska. “They enablethe owl to fly silently without thevortices disturbing the air as it swoopsclose to the ground.” By using the sameprinciples in the design of its new fanblades, Dustraction was able to takeadvantage of the ruggedness of paddleblade construction, yet provide lowernoise levels from higher pressure fans. The multitude of specially-built cyclofilters that Dustraction has shoe-hornedinto crevices, sited on postage stampsand made its stock in trade seemsalmost mundane in comparison.

Simple, an understated designelement perhaps - but effective -the rings around Dustraction’sducting prevent sagging whenlong runs are necessary.

What begins with consultation and design (above) ends withmanufacture (right), construction (below) and installation.
