• high food prices have forced food out of the reach of many people

• while conflict in Somalia exacerbated the situation

• 12 million people are in dire need of food, clean water, and basic sanitation

• Loss of life on a massive scale is a very real risk, and the crisis is set to worsen over the coming months, particularly for pastoralist communities

Food issue in France• Surging food prices have come back

into the spotlight• after they helped fuel protests that

toppled Tunisia's president in January • have spilled over to Egypt and Jordan• 925 million hungry people in the world

in 2010

Food in Latin America• reduced agricultural production

by 50 percent and caused an explosion in food prices

• incomes collapse for rural communities that have no savings of wealth to convert to cash

• the government has encouraged food producers to shift from the production of dietary staples, such as beans and corn

• commodities in greater international demand,

including animal fodder

• prices of corn, wheat, soybeans, sugar, dairy products, meat and fish have risen by more than 35 percent.
