FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

Fourth Sunday of Lent PAGE 2 March 11, 2018

PAGE 3 Cuarto Domingo de Cuaresma COMMUNAL RESPONSIBILITY

The people of God forgot the covenant and flouted God’s laws. They did not listen to the prophets among them, who spoke for God in warning them. Prophets are sent from God to remind us why we are here, but they are often, even in our own time, mocked, disregarded, and mistreated rather than thanked and listened to. The book of Chronicles tells the results of these sins: the destruction of the temple and all of Jerusalem, murder, mayhem, and finally exile to a foreign land. Why are these stories in the Bible? Just to inform us of what happened to our ancient forebears? What good would that be unless there were a message and a warning for us as well? Are we people who follow the teachings of God, who obey the words of Christ in the second covenant in his blood? Or do we continue to wreak works of darkness and violence? We are reminded by these readings that we will be judged as a people, not just as individuals.

Question of the Week

First Reading — The wrath and the mercy of the LORD are revealed in the exile and liberation of the Chosen Peo-ple (2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23) or 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a. Psalm — Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you! (Psalm 137) or Psalm 23. Second Reading — God, who is rich in mercy, brought us to life with Christ (Ephesians 2:4-10) or Ephesians 5:8-14. Gospel — The Son of Man must be lifted up, so that eve-ryone who believes in him may have eternal life (John 3:14-21) or John 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38]. Question for Children: Who is one person in your life who supports your faith and helps it to grow? Question for Adults: When is it difficult for you to believe? What particular line in this reading helps your faith?

Monday: Is 65:17-21; Ps 30:2, 4-6, 11-13b; Jn 4:43-54 Tuesday: Ez 47:1-9, 12; Ps 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9; Jn 5:1-16 Wednesday: Is 49:8-15; Ps 145:8-9, 13cd-14, 17-18; Jn 5:17-30 Thursday: Ex 32:7-14; Ps 106:19-23; Jn 5:31-47 Friday: Wis 2:1a, 12-22; Ps 34:17-21, 23; Jn 7:1-2, 10, 25-30 Saturday: Jer 11:18-20; Ps 7:2-3, 9bc-12; Jn 7:40-53 Sunday: Jer 31:31-34; Ps 51:3-4, 12-15; Heb 5:7-9; Jn 12:20-33 Alternate readings (Year A): Ez 37:12-14; Ps 130:1-8; Rom 8:8-11; Jn 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45]

Year B of the Lectionary has the Letter to the Ephesians today. Ephesus, today in Turkey, was in the first century a great Greek city, the center for the worship of Diana, the goddess of the hunt. It was a vast city even by modern standards, having nearly half a million people in the time of Paul. Yet that was a time of economic recession and moral decay. No wonder Saint Paul stayed here the long-est. It gave him an enormous and religiously curious audi-ence. His preaching stirred up the artisans who depended on the pilgrims who came to honor (and buy mementos of) seventeen gods and goddesses enshrined in the city’s temples. You can still see the open-air theater where Paul’s homily triggered a riot. Paul did have success here, and many conversions among Jews and Gentiles. They seem to have struggled with hope, perhaps because of their suffering from economic woes and isolation. Some old traditions say that the Apostle John lived out his days here, and that the Blessed Mother was cared for by him. There’s no biblical basis for this, but it is cer-tain that a small house just outside the city has been treas-ured by Christians and Muslims for centuries as the last dwelling of Mary. Long ago, the harbor silted up and the city was nearly abandoned, becoming a small village. As is so often the case, that accident of history preserved the ancient city, so that archeologists have been very success-ful in revealing ancient Christian sites. One such site is the Church of Mary, probably the first church to be dedi-cated to the Blessed Virgin, and the site of the Council of Ephesus in 431. Today, a visit to Ephesus is one of the most rewarding journeys for any pilgrim. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures from our Tradition

Fourth Sunday of Lent Today is the fourth Sunday of our Lenten preparation. The first reading is a bleak reminder of our sinfulness, our deafness to those who warn us, and the consequences of our continuing arrogance and destructiveness. The psalm tells us what it is like to be separated from the love of God. We weep and we remember. Ephesians offers us hope. God is merciful even though our sins have de-stroyed our lives. God saves us, not because of who we are but because of who God is. God’s love raises us up from our sinful despair. John reminds us that although we deserve condemnation because of our repeated sinfulness, God so loved the world that God did what Abraham was asked to do. God sacrificed Jesus, the beloved Son, that we might be saved.

EARLY AND OFTEN We are not an easy people to love. As Chronicles reminds us, we prefer sinfulness over goodness time and time again. Infidelity, abomination, pollution, mocking proph-ets—we do it all. And still God loves us. The psalm offers a beautiful image of the price we pay for living in the darkness of sin and evil when we know the beauty of liv-ing in the light. Alone, isolated, still we remember the beauty of life with God and we weep. God is rich in mercy. Time and time again God brings us back to life. Jesus’ life was sacrificed to save ours. We are saved not by our works but by the gift of God. What more powerful words are there than those found in John: “For God so loved the world the he gave his only Son, so that every-one who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.”

NOT ENOUGH It is not enough for me to love God, if my neighbor

does not love God. —St. Vincent de Paul

GUIDELINES REGARDING FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are both days of Fast and Abstinence. All Fridays during Lent we abstain from eating meat (meat includes poultry) How do we fast? We are allowed one full meal during the day. Two smaller meals are permitted. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. How do we abstain? We refrain from all meat. Age guidelines for abstinence Abstinence is to be practiced by all who are 14 years of age and older. Age guidelines for fastening Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday and who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday.

Both personally and as a community we deliberately place ourselves in need (hunger being the most basic need) so that we can discover that for which we hunger spiritually in our lives and in our world. We do this to give concrete expression to our trust in God to give us the spiritual sustenance we require. Our joint action is intended to strengthen our deep belief that the God who raised Jesus from the dead also fills our every need.

Safeguard the Children

DID YOU KNOW? Urge kids not to keep secrets from trusted adults Abusers often encourage their victims to keep secrets from their parents or other trusted adults, and reinforce secrecy through bribes, threats or by making it seem fun and exciting to keep a secret. Parents should talk to their kids about secrets, and teach them the differ-ence between fun secrets like a birthday surprise and bad secrets like unsafe touches. Kids should know that adults should never ask them to keep secrets from their parents, and if an adult does ask them to keep secrets, to talk to their parents immediately. To view a kid-friendly video on this topic, visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWqTzelTGLY.

COME TO THE LIGHT

If our works cannot save us, then why are we doing all this hard work and sacrifice during Lent? Traditionally we were asked to give up something during Lent so that we might experience the loss and deprivation that the Old Testament talks about when we are estranged from God. More recently we have been asked to do something af-firmative, to add something good to our lives instead of taking something bad away. Either way works because both are just means of waking us up to the way we live our lives, sometimes thoughtlessly indulgent, sometimes indifferent, but all too often isolated from what is at the center of God’s life, i.e., love and sacrifice. Lent is a chance to live our lives as Jesus lived his. Jesus lived in the light of love, truth, and sacrifice. Lent is a chance to find that light in our own lives.
